Rangers Analysis: Derek Stepan Looks To Impress Tonight

DETROIT - APRIL 08: Ryan McDonagh #17 of the Wisconsin Badgers celebrates the goal with the bench in the first period against the RIT Tigers on April 8, 2010 during the semifinals of the 2010 NCAA Frozen Four at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan. (Photo by Elsa/Getty Images)

Hockey is back. Wow, it feels good saying that.

The pre-season is a very interesting time in the NHL, especially for teams that have a particularly good crop of young talent. The New York Rangers, thankfully, are a team with a bunch of young budding talent just waiting to find their way to the NHL. Obviously some have better chances than others, and every year there usually seems to be a "darling" of the prospects, who rockets his way to becoming a fan favorite before stepping foot on the ice. For the Rangers this year, that player is Derek Stepan

Stepan, who the Rangers signed to a professional contract this year, is widely considered one of the prospects who has the best chance to make the team; aside from Ryan McDonagh. And why not? Stepan lead all scorers in this year's World Junior Championship with four goals and 10 assists for 14 points. That was enough to beat out Jordan Eberle (22nd overall pick in 2008 NHL Draft), Taylor Hall (1st overall pick in 2010 NHL Draft), Nino Niederreiter (5th overall pick in 2010 NHL Draft), Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson (10th overall pick in 2009 NHL Draft) and many other top prospects around the league.

His play in the NCAA with his Wisconsin Badgers also inspired hope among Rangers fans. This year in 41 games he notched 12 goals and added 42 assists for 54 points, a blistering pace of 1.32 points per game. He's a leader, a fantastic presence in the locker room and inspired juniors and seniors while he, himself, was just a sophomore.

Join me after the jump for more.

Star-divide

So obviously the 20-year-old center has some very high expectations surrounding his future, but should he really be expected to make this team out of camp? For those of you who feel as though he would be rushed, just look at what the coaching staff was able to do with Michael Del Zotto last year, a 19-year-old defenseman who jumped to the NHL straight from the OHL. Del Zotto ended up playing 19 minutes a night, quarterbacking the power play from night one and ended up scoring nine goals and adding 28 assists for 37 points. He became a staple on the power play, and was one of the few bright spots on a relatively bleak season.

Am I saying that Stepan can have the same impact right away? Well, I don't know, at least not yet. That's exactly why these pre-season games are so important, starting with tonight's bout against the New Jersey Devils. A game which will feature Martin Brodeur, who got the nod from the Devils to start.

Tonight should be a pretty good litmus test for what kind of expectations we should have for Stepan this year. Especially since he will be playing on the first line between Alexander Frolov and Marian Gaborik. Now, before this goes any farther, understand that Stepan's point total is not what you should be looking at when this game is over. There is very little time for Frolov, Gaborik and Stepan to play with each other on the ice, so their chemistry might not be there yet. So while this game is important, remember that there are a few more that he will be able to play in to continue to showcase his skills.

What you should look for from him tonight is his composure. One of the biggest things that scouts rave about is Stepan's decision making on the ice. His ability to always accurately choose wether or not he is in a passing situation or a scoring situation; and of course executing once he figures it out. For those of you who didn't get an opportunity to watch the World Junior Championship, it was a beautiful thing to see. Stepan was the man with the puck on multiple odd-man rushes, and he always made the proper decision between taking it himself and shooting, or passing off to his line-mates.

I will also be curious to see how he does on  face-offs, with that being one of the weaker parts of this game that still needs some polishing. It will also be nice to see him take shots against Brodeur, and play against some talent on the Devils with Zach Parise, Ilya Kovalchuk and Travis Zajac getting the nod to play as well.

There should also be little panic if Stepan doesn't impress tonight. This will be his first true game as a professional, and there might be some growing pains as Stepan, Gaborik and Frolov try to find some chemistry on the ice. John Tortorella really likes what he has seen out of Stepan thus far, and it will be interesting to see how much, or how little, he heaps onto Stepan's plate tonight.

Anyway, enough talk, let's start the season already! By the way, there was no picture of Stepan in the database, so enjoy this one of McDonagh and some of the Badgers.

stepan gives me hope that we do have a top line center coming

….something this franchise has gone a loooooooong time without

i’m wondering if he can make a jump similar to what paul stastny did coming out of college or if he really will need ahl seasoning, the adjustment to the pro schedule is probably the biggest hurdle him and mcdonagh will be dealing with

on the flip side of rookies in camp looking to do well, saw tweets from deb kaufman regarding kiril kabanov last night:

First Line Center

Stepan is someone to get excited about. I find myself measuring the pros and cons of him making the team vs. him staying in Hartford for a year of development. I think there is no doubt that Stepan is an exceptional player, he has played with excellence on the biggest stages and in the biggest games that have been thrown his way and has always emerged as a star player and even a leader. Undoubtedly there is much to be gained from a year of development in Hartford, I am sure his conditioning and two-way game will improve and he might build chemistry with Grachev and potentially MZA.

But the big question to me is this: What does Stepan have to do to make the team this year? I don’t want to think about who he’d replace or wrestle a roster spot away from. I just want to know what he has to do in order to break into the lineup and hold a spot. If he shows tonight that he can center Gaborik and Frolov and make plays with them I think he might very well make an immensely strong case for himself. In a lot of ways I hope he does just that but really I just want him to play a good game.

If Stepan is the Rangers 1st line center this year, then this team is in trouble. I’m really excited about Stepan’s future, but let’s get serious. He needs a year of development at the professional level, playing a full season against men. The Rangers should do exactly was the Devils did with Parise. Let Stepan play an entire year in the AHL, then bring him up next year.

by NTB on Sep 23, 2010 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that the point is that

if Stepan makes this team, he needs to play on the top 2 lines. Burying him on the third line isn’t going to do anything.

Except of course, 3rd line is where he belongs at this stage in his career. Or at least 3rd line opponents. Is 12 min a night on the 3rd NHL line really that much worse than 20 on the 1st AHL line?

Legit question, I’m not sure.

Very Good question.

by NTB on Sep 23, 2010 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions

that sort of depends on who he is playing with, doesnt it?

it’s not like AA last year who already had 2 years of pro experience and nothing to really gain being in hartford again, so if stepan isnt going to play with high skill guys in a skill role, let him get his experience playing that way in hartford. for some reason i am thinking about a joba chamberlain comparison obviously different sports but if we bring him up to be up but change his role does it hurt him long term?

by Michael Gleich on Sep 23, 2010 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Christensen being the first line center

Doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. The same can be said of Prospal, Drury, and even Anisimov. I understand the point you are trying to make but I think one has to weigh the fact that Stepan is an elite prospect and is a pretty special hockey player.

Joe makes a good point, unless Stepan is playing top six forward minutes his year is best spent in Hartford developing, otherwise he will be squandered like Anisimov was for long stretches of last year.

if people are expecting more than at best a 6 seed, more likely 8-10 then they are not being all that realistic about where this team is. i would rather Stepan get the year to develop in Hartford but if he is going to play big minutes up here it is ok, just dont leave him here to play lower than as joe says top 6

We had a first line center in Scott Gomez. The problem was, when we had him, we didn’t have talent around him for him to shine. He’s performing pretty well up in Montreal with Camalleri and Gionta around him.

I love Stepan on the first line, I do worry about him facing guys like Parise night in and night out though. If Stepan does play 1st line and sticks there, I’d really like to see Tortorella put the 2nd or 3rd line out against the toughs. More specifically, whatever line Dubinsky is on.

me too. Gives our first line a chance against their second lines, if Gaborik can put up over a point per game playing against other teams’ top lines, I expect close to a 100-point season if he’s facing other teams’ second lines.

Duby and Cally can hold their own against first line comp, especially if a veteran like Drury or Prospal is centering them. I’m not too confident in Christensen’s backcheck, but that would be one hell of an aggressive line.

Hockey tonight! Great write-up Joe

The four Ranger prospects with the best shot to break into the line-up this year: Ryan McDonagh, Derek Stepan, MZA, and Evgeny Grachev.

I am a bit nervous about seeing Stepan play against the Devils big line (outstanding line, interesting that they moved Kovalchuk to RW) and hope to see him do well on the faceoff dot but what I am really going to watch for is his decision-making with the puck and where he goes when he doesn’t have the puck. He seems like a cerebral player, a smart guy on the ice, and I hope that aspect of his game helps him in terms of his chances of making a smooth transition from college hockey to the NHL.

Getting to see MZA, McDonagh, and Stepan tonight is pretty exciting… a lot of great Ranger prospects who can all make a push to make the roster this year. Not to mention getting to see Frolov in a Ranger sweater. So many things to look forward to tonight and to watch for… all I have to say is, ’Let’s go Rangers!’

“He’s very good at closed ice areas, how he can cut and get out of trouble and escape out of trouble. He made some great passes today. I’m not sure if he scored in the scrimmages today but he’s another guy we’re going to look at. He can play either side, and we’ll probably look at him on both sides. From Ranger Rants (Andrew Gross)
Zuccarello is attempting to adapt his game from the bigger European rinks to the smaller North American sheets. He did fairly well in Vancouver during the Olympics for Norway but has said during training camp it’s a big adjustment because of how much quicker the play happens on the smaller rinks, giving players much less time to react.

"I’m playing my game," Zuccarello said in a brief interview before rushing into a team meeting. "It’s going to be a good experience playing a game and seeing how it is. It’ll be a tough game, exciting and I’ll probably be a little nervous, too."

Zuccarello added that during the Winter Olympics, his game on the smaller rink, "Just kind of came."

Ranger Analysis comments

I’m not being sarcastic , but how can anyone consider MZA as anything but a shoo-in to be a regular D-man this year?
Yeah, his +/- is pretty bad, but that can be improved by coaching. That’s the only area this kid needs to improve. EVERYTHING else he does is NHL caliber. He’s potentially the best Ranger D-man since Leetch! Who else on the roster is as good or better than him on offense? He played more minutes and in more situations than a LOT of experienced d-men in the league, and he was only a teenage rookie! Give the guy a break!!
I’d sooner have him give up a goal once in a while while trying to set up a goal, than do NOTHING, like some of the lame-brains on the team.

MZA = Mats Zuccarello Aasen – the Norwegian RW that is not a shoo-in for the roster.

MDZ = Michael Del Zotto – the defenseman you’re talking about, who obviously is on the roster.

Barely noticed. Though I don’t see the dashboard link on the front page any more. I could just be blind.

Is it bad that I’m not seeing the changes? Or were the changes very subtle?

by NTB on Sep 23, 2010 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Very subtle

look at the top of the page, you will see that the “tweet”, “like” and other buttons of that sort are near the top of the posts now instead of the bottom. So are how many people who “tweeted” and “liked” the story.

is it just me

or out of the four professional sports leagues…the NHL’s preseason has the biggest impact on the regular season in terms of intensity and really getting prepped for the regular season

Former Ranger prospect

Chad Wiseman scores against the Ranger rookies.

McNaught got in another fight. Think that guy is trying to show the coaches he knows his role?

McIlrath (NYR) bests Berube (NJ) in a fight at 6:00. That’s the fifth fight of the game.

Good to see the bad blood starting early in their careers. Also didn’t take long for MacTruck to get in a fight against another team.

i like that he can fight but i hope he cuts down on the fighting because as a 1st pair D he needs to be on the ice. he is only helping the other team sitting in the box for 5.

Certainly. I’m sure though as he matures and is coached by professional staffs, that fact will start to sink in.

Think you and I have exchanged thoughts on this before

I couldn’t agree more, I like that McIlrath has that ability in his arsenal but I’d like to see it groomed out of his hockey so he can log big minutes and get used to the workload of a top pair defenseman (which I know he already is).

Dreger debunks rumors of Oil-NYR trade.

- Unless trade discussions between the Oil and NYR took place in the last hour, I’m told there’s nothin

- Last tweet was cryptic. I’m responding to a rumour I heard about the possibility of Oil-NYR trade. Debunking rumours is becoming taxing :)
