Rangers News: Rangers Make First Cuts

NEW YORK - SEPTEMBER 23: Marian Staal #10 of the New York Rangers celebrates his overtime winning goal with teamates against the New Jersey Devils during their preseason game on September 23 2010 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. (Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images)

As per Andrew Gross, the Rangers have made their first cuts of this fresh pre-season. From Andrew's full story:

Today's cuts:

To Hartford
G: Jordan Parise, Cameron Talbot
D: Lee Baldwin, Sam Klassen, Tomas Kundratek, Jyri Niemi, Blake Parlett, Nigel Williams
F: Chris Chappell, Devin DiDiomete, Brodie Dupont, Ryan Garlock, Chris McKelvie, Justin Soryal, Kelsey Tessier

To Juniors
G: Scott Stajcer (Owen Sound, OHL)
D: Daniel Maggio (Sudbury, OHL), Dylan McIlrath (Moose Jaw, WHL)
F: Ryan Bourque (Quebec, QMJHL), Roman Horak (Chilliwack, WHL), Randy McNaught (Saskatoon, WHL), Christian Thomas (Oshawa, OHL), Ethan Werek (Kingston, OHL), Jason Wilson (Owen Sound, OHL), Andrew Yogan (Erie, OHL)

No real surprises here. It was widely considered that Bourque, Horak, Werek and McIlrath (the more popular cut players) needed more time to develop in their respective systems.

Also from Gross is a list of who is left:

emaining in camp (38 players)
G: Martin Biron, Chad Johnson, Henrik Lundqvist
D: Michael Del Zotto, Steve Eminger, Garnet Exelby, Matt Gilroy, Dan Girardi, Brandon Manning, Ryan McDonagh, Wade Redden, Michal Rozsival, Michael Sauer, Alexei Semenov, Marc Staal, Pavel Valentenko
F: Artem Anisimov, Sean Avery, Derek Boogaard, Brian Boyle, Dane Byers, Ryan Callahan, Erik Christensen, Chris Drury, Brandon Dubinsky, Ruslan Fedotenko, Alex Frolov, Marian Gaborik, Evgeny Grachev, Tim Kennedy, Kris Newbury, Vinny Prospal, Brandon Prust, Derek Stepan, Dale Weise, Todd White, Jeremy Williams, Mats Zuccarello

OK guys, thoughts?

Brandon Manning, Jeremy Williams, and Newbury are the interesting ones to me, they’re long shots for the roster, I’m curious why they’re getting a slightly longer look. Especially Manning.

Actually Dupont was also kind of surprising

but I honestly didn’t think that any of them were going to crack the lineup.

I guess…but other than the two above, is Dupont really better than anyone that stayed behind? I don’t think so. (Well, he’s better than Booger, but that’s besides the point)

No he isn't

neither are the three stated above though.

And thus..I'm surprised those 3 stayed.

We agree here, either all 4 should’ve stayed, or all 4 should’ve went, whichever.

exactly

So I’m not too sure what the plan is. Maybe they know something that we don’t know?

Probably not…
Don’t have time to search for it, but didn’t Torts say something the other day, about getting to know guys, even if they’ll be sent down. Like he wants to get familiar with what’s in the system. Pretty sure everyone involved knows those guys won’t crack the lineup. But giving them extra time will give Torts a chance to see more of them, just in case, for the future. Maybe? I don’t know.

Just a thought ...

Doesn’t Manning have a year of Jr. elligibility left? Could be a case of the team wanting to get a better look at him, to see where they want him to play. Send him back to Jrs or to AHL/ECHL – or maybe even not sign him to a contract at all.

Regarding Williams and Newbury, both have been around for a while. Do they help us meet veteran player requirements in games where we want don’t want to dress too many roster players? Are they bodies that fill out lines, and help run drills, without being a threat to young players trying out. Finally, it could be a courtesy – they are vets, they get every chance to play at the NHL level, show Slats, and other GM’s what they can do, and try to land an NHL job. If they’re gonna be in Hartford with our prospects, we want them happy.

by BuckarooClub on Sep 24, 2010 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions

well they wouldnt send him to the echl it would be juniors or AHL, but it is like with pither last year, they can send him back without a contract and someone else could sign him, send him back with one or send him to the ahl. also have to remember the rangers arent that far from the 50 contract limit so it could be about seeing what if any of the tryout earn a contract as well.

by Michael Gleich on Sep 24, 2010 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't disagree

I was just suggesting that, while he might not be seen as an NHL prospect, they might have kept Manning around to let him work infront of Slats, Clarke, etc. so they can figure out what to do with him next.

by BuckarooClub on Sep 24, 2010 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions

well maybe we play like an elimination type game tomorrow where all the longshots play and winners last a few more days.

by Michael Gleich on Sep 24, 2010 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Good point, George. I find it kind of odd that those three were not cut as well. Maybe Torzts wants to see them in preseason action. If that is the case, then Bourque and Werek should have been kept up as well.

Kind of surprising seeing Dupont being sent down so soon, then again there is a ton of competition on offense.

by John Merrigan on Sep 24, 2010 3:05 PM EDT reply actions

Haven't hear much about DuPont in camp

Perhaps they were a bit disapointed with him, and are looking to light a fire under him?

he’s a career ahl guy so no reason to keep him up

nah

if that was the case Torts woulda had a chat with him, and left him for one more round.

Does Sather have something coming?

It seems like we have too many forwards as well as blue-liners that could make the team as a role player. Does anyone see Sather packaging a few players up and trading them away? If so, who does he trade and for what?

by one-bar on Sep 24, 2010 3:08 PM EDT reply actions

I know the numbers suggest

That there’s surplus talent on the roster, but I don’t think the excess 3rd and 4th line players, especially veteran players on 1 way deals could fetch anything attractive now without combining them with a high upside prospect or draft pick.

by MyFavBaseballSquadron on Sep 24, 2010 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think "attractive" is what they want or need...

But we might be able to package some role players up for future picks or even a decent prospect.

by one-bar on Sep 24, 2010 5:18 PM EDT up reply actions

i look at that list and i see a lot of guys battling for 4th line and 5-7 on the D chart, but not a lot of top 9 competitions.

by Michael Gleich on Sep 24, 2010 3:31 PM EDT reply actions

it seems like a defense trade will be necessary, not necessarily one of any significance but seeing as how they optioned 6 to hartford already and one would assume at least redden at least 3 others of Sauer, Valentenko, Manning, Eminger, Gilroy, McD (i expect Gilroy, McD to make the club) would have to go down, that is a glut unless they will send some of the ones from Hartford to Greenville.

by Michael Gleich on Sep 24, 2010 3:41 PM EDT reply actions

ugh

another year of redden and rozsival, the turnover twins. i’m already depressed.

by dsteak on Sep 24, 2010 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I have a funny feeling that if Christiansen doesn’t have a strong camp, then he is done and Dubi goes back to Center. Not that I want to Erik Christiansen get cut, but right now Stepan (And yes I know it’s only one game) Has outshined him so far.

by NYR #35 Richter on Sep 24, 2010 5:28 PM EDT reply actions

he’s not going to get cut but he might not see ice time and he will be spending time in the press box.

by CrazyRangerFan on Sep 24, 2010 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Tiring quickly of the "Christiansen" criticism

I guess the first comment is his last name is spelled Christensen. Christ…ensen. And he is going to play a prominent role with this club for the next two years, so I think fans and bloggers ought to get used to it. I don’t have a man crush on this hockey player but it is clear he has skills and thus far is underrated by the fan base. He has great hands and quick feet. Love him…..just not that way…

by av8trranger on Sep 24, 2010 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

They wouldn’t have brought him back if they were convinced last year was a fluke. He certainly hasn’t played himself off the team, even if they don’t keep him with Gabby.

by BuckarooClub on Sep 24, 2010 6:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree with you and Buck

But I think it is not impossible for him to get bumped down from the first line and end up playing 3rd line minutes. He is one of those guys who was invisible some games last year but was a huge pick-up in terms of what he contributed to the team. Is he a #1 center in the NHL? Not by any stretch of the imagination. But he skates well, can do things offensively, and had a spark with Gaborik that few others seemed to have.

They cut it down to 21 or 23 for the opening of the season?

This should be the team:

G: Martin Biron, Henrik Lundqvist

D: Michael Del Zotto, Garnet Exelby(unless Semenov has an insane camp), Matt Gilroy, Dan Girardi, Ryan McDonagh, Michal Rozsival, Marc Staal

F: Artem Anisimov, Sean Avery, Derek Boogaard, Ryan Callahan, Erik Christensen, Chris Drury, Brandon Dubinsky, Alex Frolov, Marian Gaborik, Vinny Prospal, Brandon Prust, Derek Stepan, Mats Zuccarello(Drury is out MZA starts in the extra spot assuming its a 21 man roster) on the bubble Fedotenko, something is telling me he will make this team.

by earthworm on Sep 24, 2010 9:22 PM EDT reply actions

dont see exelby making it, probably semenov or eminger.
I think boyle and maybe even kennedy make the club, dont see MZA starting the year up.

I have to agree

I think that Exelby was brought here as more of a “scare tactic” than anything else.

i think on d..

staal girardi mdz rozi and gilroy are all but locks.. and the other 2 spots are between mcd/eminger/semenov and long shots for sauer/exelby.

and with the forwards..

fedotenko wont make it.. and i dont think mza or stepan will either will either.. i assume kennedy boyle and white will make it..

gaborik, frolov, prospal dubinsky, callahan, anisimov, drury, avery, christensen prust, boogey are all locks..

assuming they have a full roster of 23.. with 2 extra forwards (especially cause drury starts out injured) .. that leaves 3 more spots to fill..

my best guess would be.. white kennedy boyle

  • on a side note i think it would be awesome to let grachev-stepan-mza play together in the minors for 20+ mins a night :)

The thing that worries me about Ex, is that at one time sather wanted to get him at the deadline…now that he is a freebie……i hope that if he does not deserve to be here, he is cut. On principal alone you don’t take Semenov because of what happened last season.

which is what, do what his family wanted? we should stone him and his wife for it.

seriously, it’s not like he came in here made the squad and then took another offer for money in the nhl. if he earns the job we shall see. i think he screwed himself cause if he had been here last year he would look a lot better in the numbers game because we were a lot thinner in terms of nhl ready guys a year ago.

This is what I think the rosters will be

Exelby and fedotenko will not make the team. There is too much youth that the team wants to work with. I expect a packaged deal to be made to cut down the siZe but I also see some players going to the echl.

On the rangers:
Forwards: anisimov, Avery, boogaard, Boyle, christensen, Callahan, drury, Dubinsky, frolov, gaborik, prospal, prust, stepan, white
- white and prospal will be alternating the scratch role a majority of the time while drury is recovering.
-Stepan and Christensen will be battling for top center spot with frolov and gabby on first line.
Defense: del zotto, gilroy, girardi, rozsival, staal, eminger, semenov
-expect rosy or eminger to be some part of a trade just A hunch.
Goalies: lundqvist, biron

On Hartford:
Forwards: chappel, didiomette, dupont, garlock, mckelvie, soryal, Byers, grachev, Kennedy, newbury, weise, Williams, zuccarello
- grachev will get a chance to play on NHL level this year
-zuccarello is good but needs some work give him one more year
Defenseman: klassen, kundratek, redden, niemi, mcdonagh, sauer, valentenko
- if the rangers can get rid of rosy and maybe eminger this year as part of a trade I can see mcdonagh, sauer, and valentenko battling for open slots
Goalies; Johnson, parise

Echl
Forwards- tessier
Defensemen- Williams, dowzAk, manning, parlett
Goalies- talbot

by danmarley21 on Sep 25, 2010 4:45 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Exelby and Fedetenko don’t even have contracts, they don’t have to package anything to get rid of them.

There’s no way on earth Prospal gets scratched.

McDonagh will make the team before Semenov, who also needs a contract.

Talbot’s ahead of Parise on the depth chart, and you’re missing Stacjer.

Nigel Williams isn’t going to the ECHL after playing 126 games in the AHL the last two seasons.

I’m sure there’s more, those are the obvious.

Todd White

Didn’t look that great last night, Fedotenko and Tim Kennedy have looked much better (other guys vying for the same roster spot). Think the Rangers might go over the amount of veterans allowed in Hartford if they demote him though, especially if Redden accepts being demoted and plays with the Wolfpack/Whale this year. I think Todd White deserves another chance in the preseason… if he is healthy. He had offseason shoulder surgery and I heard he may have aggravated that injury by rushing himself onto the ice.

HIS SKILL IS SUPERB THOUGH BUT HE NEEDS MAJOR HELP ON DEFENSE… HE NEEDS HELP……… I THINK MCDONOUGH LOOKS BETTER AS FAR AS A SOLID DMAN. BACK THERE.. BUT HE PLAYS WELL BUT DOESNT PLAY PHYSICAL AROUND THE NET WHERE HE SHOULD BE BUT HAS GOOD OPEN ICE HITS?? I DONT UNDERSTAND.. HOPEFULLY HE WILL IMPROVE HIS GAME THIS YEAR LIKE MARC STALLL DID. AND WILL GET BETTER ON THE BACK END BC HES YOUNG I GIVE HIM A BREAK.. BUT STEP IT UP. ALMOST COST US A MENTAL GAME…….
