Wade Redden To Be Placed On Waivers
As per Larry Brooks, defenseman Wade Redden will be placed on waivers today at noon. It looks like the Rangers have found his replacement in either Ryan McDonagh, Michael Sauer, Garnet Exelby, or Alexei Semenov. Redden was given an ultimatum at the end of last season, saying show up ready to play, or be sent to the AHL. It looks like he either wasn’t ready to play, or the defenseman has just seen the new NHL pass him by. So long Wade.

Redden
Congratulations on the new addition to your family, wish you the best.
Shame it didn’t work out with you in New York, it’s a big relief that it looks like the Redden saga is over for the Rangers (at least for this year). Hopefully someone might give him a look when he is on the waiver wire, if not I hope the club can find a way to loan him to Europe. Who knows he might even be a great influence for youngsters in Hartford? I am sad to see it end this way… but really there was nothing left to do with Redden was there? I won’t say you’ll be missed Redden, but I recognize that you were a good guy off the ice.

Yeah I agree
just a guy with a big contract is all. I feel bad for him, I really do. Than again, he’s making $6.5 million a year. So who’s the real loser here?

He had so much potential to make a big splash in NY
When the Rangers picked him up I was so excited, I thought we were going to get an offensive defenseman that would be similar (not anywhere near… don’t start on me) to Leetch. I am sure paying him off the books will be headache for the organization for a nice long time… for the organization’s sake I hope they find a way to loan him away to Europe somehow. He has a beautiful wife, a new child, and still makes more than any of us can ever dream to make… what a disaster the Redden experiment was. I don’t harbor hate for him though, just disappointment… a lot of it.

Very, very well said.
Wade seems like a nice guy and a really good human being. At the end of the day, this just comes down to a business decision. If he were making 2.5 or even 3 he’d be snagged by half the league in a heart-beat.
d
hey Dig Deep, I agree when you say the Redden experiment was a disaster
but it def was not a surprise. I have a tuff time believing you were “so excited” when we signed him. He was in an undenieble decline his last cpl years in Ottawa and was signed to a ridiculous contract. most people knew it then and everyone obviously knows it now. I was cautioulsy optimistic at best……..and thats being generous. And that was of the fact that we as Ranger fans were starved for a puck moving offensive d-man n power play qb. We never got that……………….good riddance Wade.

I was excited
I liked Redden’s brand of hockey when he played in Ottawa, he was one of my favorite defensemen that wasn’t wearing a Rangers jersey. I didn’t expect him to make a huge splash, but I expected him to be a mainstay on the powerplay and bring somewhere in the neighborhood of ten goals a year (maybe less than that, but plenty of assists). He was a big failure of an experiment, I am glad it is over.
In Hank we trust.
At first I thought this was a joke, but it’s finally happened!! So with redden gone, McDonagh probably makes it and most likely a vet d-man (Eminger/Semenov) to be the seventh…what a great way to start the morning!

Any time a veteran is told he is not good enough it’s sad, especially after just welcoming a child to the world. Redden was a professional on and off the ice. His contract was just ridiculous and his play didn’t suit the post lockout NHL well and he got older. Good luck Wade. Hopefully this is a start of smart cap management and the youth getting an honest chance to take over.

That dude Ryan Lambert can eat shit!
Some further quotes from AGross were helpful:
#NYRangers GM says there was no sense waiting to waive D Wade Redden, wants to give younger players more of a chance.
#NYRangers GM Glen Sather told Wade Redden after last season unless he came back “and really got off to a great start” this would happen.
Wade Redden told #NYRangers GM Glen Sather he’ll take a few days to consider options. Sather said he would be allowed to play at Hartford.#NYRangers GM Glen Sather: “It’s always difficult changing somebody’s life but you have to do what’s right for the team.”
Wonder what options Wade considers… Retirement? Europe? He probably doesn’t want to play in Hartford.

If he gets “reassigned” to Europe he’ll still get paid, I think (probably the European team will pay part of his salary if not all). This would be similar to the Nylander situation, I believe.
As for the family, good point. Nylander had left his family in Sweden.
by red army line on Sep 25, 2010 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions
Is it conceivable that Redden could retire rather than play in Hartford? Correct me if I’m wrong, but if he retires I thought he still receives his full salary. If that’s the case, it’s not like Redden will need to go to Hartford or Europe for the money.
It’s both a happy and sad day though. I’m happy the Rangers will clear that ridiculous cap hit, but you never want to see a player forced out for such circumstances—you know no team will even think about picking him up through waivers either.
Redden could end up in purgatory for the next 4 years…
No
if you retire you don’t get your salary. If you sign a contract when you’re over 35-years-old and you retire, you still don’t get paid, but the team is on the hook for the cap hit.
If Redden retires, he has to stay out of the NHL for one year, and then he can come back as a UFA

I’m sure he’ll just go to Hartford. Moving to CT is a lot easier than moving to Russia or Germany or where ever….especially with a new born. Who knows, maybe he gets picked up by another team. They’d be on the hook for what $3.25 million….that’s not terrible, especially for a team hovering near the cap floor

No
if he gets pick up on waivers to the AHL, they assume the full contract. You’re thinking of re-entry waivers.

A team would be on the hook for his full salary ($6.5 million). Re-entry waivers is when it’s half salary. In my opinion, there’s no way Redden will ever be recalled, because if he was picked up the Rangers would be on the hook for half his salary as well.

Of the 18 skaters (not counting two goaltenders) that teams may dress for a regular-season game, at least 13 must be qualified as “development players.” Of those 13, 12 must have played in 260 or fewer professional games (including AHL, NHL, IHL and European elite leagues), and one must have played in 320 or fewer professional games.

I don’t want to be perceived as kicking a dog while he is down, but Wade Redden is not the first guy to lose his job after having a baby, and he is one of the few in the history of the world to do it and still retain a $6M yearly salary. Don’t cry for me Argentina, Wade Redden will go on.
He underachieved, miserably, and from everything we heard was a pain in the ass in the locker room. The Rangers have a viable solution that works for the team, the player, and the fans.

yea, of course there’s all that. the thing i don’t understand is that he had chances to step up like some of our kids are…if he had only showed some passion and commitment, the way that someone over paid like Drury does, we might have grit our teeth and took it.
but regardless of the salary i still wish him the best in life.

WOW, I thought this day would never come!! I wish the guy the best but was he ever a cream puff defensemen or what !!! Most of the blame should go to Sather for getting in a bidding war with nobody for this guy..that contract was rediculous…I’m just glad to see it’s finally over..I still think they need to move Rosival somehow someway..he is another cream puff..Prospal is another guy that is weak but Torts likes him,Drury another but he blocks shots so keep him.

rozi was actually a solid dman towards the end of last year and is looking good in camp..
how can u say prospal is weak? hes one of the most emotional players on the team and is a good leader.. and lets not forget how many points he put up last year..

IMHO I feel McDonagh makes the tema (seems to be a given) I’m not sold on Eminger and I’m pulling for Sauer to be the 7th D man but the Rangers most likely will keep Seminov to add another vet on the D line.
I do not feel sorry because it is a buiness and I feel sorry for all the people that suffer from illness that cannot enjoy life like we do. I do wish Redden the best and he has a reputation for being a great guy off the ice executing charity work etc..

Addition by Subtraction
Just simply no Redden makes the d stronger…he was a liability out there…Hanks probably feeling a little better today…they just need dmen that will take the body night in and night out..put people on their ass…McDonough fits that m.o..Exelby sure does…Semenov sure has the size..like to see Gilroy make it and maybe even Valentenko, anyone that is willing to pound people, and Rozsival doesn’t fit in that category so he needs to go,lots of interesting decisions to make on d as well as the fowards..Stepan is a lock at this point..like to see Zucc make it just for the speed factor he adds.
stepan is not even close to a lock…
gaborik frolov prospal anisimov dubi cally drury avery christensen boogey prust are locks..
considering we carry two extra forwards that leaves 3 spots open..
my best guess is white kennedy and boyle..
mza and stepan have a chance but honestly i rather them play on the same line with grachev next year in hartford for 20+ mins a night..
as for the defense id assume gilroy is set to make it.. that leaves two spots open..
not sure who will get them as its a pretty close competition but my best guess is mcdonagh and eminger/semenov as the 7th
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
we shall see
well maybe I am wrong for calling Stepan a lock but from what I am hearing and the way things are going in camp, like the Rangers have finally found their Center…I know he is just a kid but to already be putting him at center of your number one line…I don’t think it is an experiment, more like can he handle this, yes he can and now we got us a center for Gabby and Frolov and away we go…of course just my opinion.
I think Stepan needs to play at the NHL level now, he’s shown he’s ready. The only concern might be the wall that college players hit around 40-45 games. Thats why I would be favored to keep Stepan up the whole year but give him breaks here and there.

wondering, though
if something might be worked out between redden’s agent and another team under the table so that redden doesn’t report to hartford, has his contract invalidated, becomes a ufa and signs with said team for 2 or 3 mil to stay in the nhl
guess it depends what’s more important to him, getting 6.5 to play in the minors or half that to stay in the big league

Gorgeous wife, college is expensive… but in all seriousness he is a professional athlete and has probably taken a serious blow to his pride.
‘If Redden clears waivers, he can be sent to the Rangers’ AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack. The Rangers’ website reported that Redden said he will take a few days to think his situation over before deciding whether to accept the potential assignment to Hartford or try to find a job elsewhere.’ -NHL.com
He is going to think it over, I was talking to my brother about the likelihood of him going to another team. The one that stood out in my mind was Columbus because they were in the rumor mill to deal Commodore for Souray because they want some offense on their blueline. It is just a wacky thought of mine, but maybe he could fit there. It is hard to think that his NHL career is over, as overpaid as he was he is still talented. Who knows? I think a team that gets him for 2-3 mill might get off like a bandit, but Wade would be leaving A LOT of money on the table to do that. Very tough call.
In Hank we trust.
true
that’s why it really boils down to which is more important, the guaranteed 6.5 mil or being able to stay in the league at half that (or less)
reporting to hartford essentially means his nhl career is over, because he’s what, 37-38 by the end of his current deal? nobody’s going to sign him to a pro deal at that point after four years in the ahl
he can be serviceable in the nhl still, maybe it’s in his best interest to invalidate his deal and work something out elsewhere with a team with a need for a defenseman and some cap room
speaking of, saw streit hurt his shoulder today, maybe the islanders want to take a chance on redden?

Each year, he comes back on the cap in the summer. If he were to spend the year in HFD, he’d go right back on the roster, back through the waiver process, etc….
Does it help his stock? Not really, but he will have more chances.

right
….but there’s simply no way he’s coming back to the big club once he accepts that assignment to hartford
short of a series of catastrophic injuries and some space magically appearing against the cap, and based on his current deal nobody would pick him up off waivers during camp between now and the end of the contract
don’t know how likely it is, but the more i think about it, i wouldn’t be completely shocked if he negates the deal by not reporting and signing a deal elsewhere

for whatever that’s worth
"You can be a lion maybe once in your life. If you don't make this deal, you're a
mouse forever….Wouldn't you rather be a lion for one day than a mouse for life?"
No
I was referring to Wiz taking Streit’s job as a powerplay quarterback. Wisniewski is a physical defenseman with not a whole lot of offensive upside to his game.
In Hank we trust.
wisniewski had 30 points last year
he’s obviously not ideal but i don’t think they have anybody else that can step into that role, unless they’re planning on de haan making the team and hoping he has an mdz-type impact
"You can be a lion maybe once in your life. If you don't make this deal, you're a

After Streit
Powerplay points for defensemen on the Island:
Mark Streit 22 PPP
Jack Hillen 5 PPP
Bruno Gervais 2 PPP
(Wisniewsky had 9 PPP in Anaheim, 2 PPG)
Streit injury cripples their powerplay and a lot of their offense.
In Hank we trust.
Funny thing is…the PP is going to produce no matter who is back there. Since the lockout, the worst PP produced at 11.8%. Give that PP 300 opportunties, you still get 35-36 goals.
The primary PP defensemen gets points for at least 50% of the points on the ice, at least last year.
So no matter who is back there…you can expect 17-18 PP points from the lead guy. That Streit is gone will hurt, but it’s not like the PP will suddenly never score any more. What guys did in the non-primary role won’t matter much.

Rangers reactions to Redden news
Ranger Rants’ Andrew Gross’ write-up
"He tried," Tortorella added. "This has nothing to do with effort, as far as this decision today, it has nothing to do with his preparation. He’s a good man. Just couple with we feel we have some tryouts that we want to continue to look at, we have some kids coming and based on we’re going to evaluate right from Day 1, not just exhibition games but through scrimmages and camp, we just felt we needed to move in another direction here and with five games left, we’re looking at some other people at this position. It has nothing to do with effort or anything like that. We just feel we have some other people ready to move in in that spot."
Del Zotto recalled how Redden was the first player to stand up and address the team – telling them not to forget the feeling – after the Rangers’ shootout loss to the Flyers in the season finale knocked them out of a playoff berth.
"It’s shocking, I don’t really know what to say, obviously it’s sad," Del Zotto said. "Wade’s been around so long, he helped me last year. It’s a decision by Slats (GM Glen Sather) and you’ve got to live with it. Especially a guy like me in my first season, he helped me out along the way. He told me simple is better. If there’s one thing I learned from him is that I’m not going to make that long pass on every shift. You learn to fight another day. When we were around Wade, he was a happy guy, very positive. He never dwells on the negative."
"I really like Reds," Lundqvist added. "Whatever happens, I hope it turns out good for him, here or someplace else."

speaking of ex-rangers, aaron voros is looking good

SEPT 25>Happy RISTH Day everyone!!
We all new this was the right move long ago, but I’m guessing the way McDonugh has looked finally made it a nobrainer. I’m so freakin happy!! Everything in Rangerland is moving faster than I imagined just 6 months ago.
Major props to Sather/Dolan for admitting a mistake and moving on. As a devoted Ranger fan, I thank you.
As for Wade, 6.5 buys a lot of baby wipes> enjoy!
so if mcdonagh is indeed the guy who takes redden's spot
his presence makes this the reeeeally young d we’ve been looking for, and there are gonna be some growing pains this year
and if mcdonagh’s the #5 or 6 this year, you have to think he’d be paired with a vet like eminger, exelby or semenov rather than pairing with a second year guy like gilroy
so if you have staal-girardi as the top pair, and say mdz-roszival as the second pairing, the numbers game looks like gilroy is hartford-bound….unless somehow the plan is for him to stay with the team and be a 7th defenseman, which doesn’t help him in any way

Happy Antiredden Day
Today is a holiday; I feel like a giant monkey crushing my salary cap has been lifted…..

How crappy would you feel if Steve Jobs decides to give you $6 million to be his secretary and you end up doing a bad job and failing to meet expectations, but he can’t fire you so he sends you to be the secretary of someone else?

I’m glad that Redden is gone, only because of the insane amount of money he was getting paid. He never truely deserved that type of money to begin with. Other than that, I believe he was a decent guy. Good luck to him and his wife for the new addition to the family.
