Rangers News: Wade Redden To Report To Hartford
In a surprising move, recently waived Wade Redden will report to Hartford instead of playing in Europe. Here is the tweet from Larry Brooks:
NYP_Brooksie NEWS: Agent Don Meehan texts that Redden will report to AHL Hartford on Wednesday.
There were conflicting reports that lead to the belief that Redden was not going to report to the AHL. Glen Sather was quoted as saying that he would allow Don Meehan and Redden to talk to other teams. Obviously nothing came from those talks.
This isn't the greatest news for the Rangers. had Redden refused to report to Hartford then his contract would have been nullified and the Rangers wouldn't have to pay him the remainder of his salary. It also would have minimized the number of veterans in the AHL, since the Rangers are dangerously close to the limit of NHL veterans permitted to play in the AHL.
Anyway, thoughts on this guys?

he only counts against the vet limit if they play him. it would probably be a bad PR move to pay him all that and not play him, but could be a way to force a euro move.
Lol
He’ll play there. No way he doesn’t.

Family comes first
I doubt Wade wanted to pick up and move his family 6-10 time zones away when they just had a kid. Hartford’s not ideal, but depending on where Wade settled for his time in NY, he might not even have to move.
As for hurting the team….he hurt the team the second he signed the contract. It allows less flexibility with moves and bodies, but there had to be some collateral damage.

well maybe we knew this and that is why we made the decision we did with the eminger/semenov situation?

I’m sure they at least talked to Wade before waiving him, so yeah, I think they at least had an inkling.

Surprising? Not at all to me. The guy’s family is just getting started and moving across the pond would not have been a good move. And Im just throwin this out there off the top of my head but what if Roszival sustains a serious injury? There’s some newfound caproom (if the money comes off the cap during the injury, I dont know the specifics) and it’s possible that they’d bring Wade back to fill in until Roszival returns.

Tough game, they’ll be fine though. I don’t buy Chicago, who lost to the Lions as far as I’m concerned, and beat a schizo Cowboys team.

I don't think so
There’s the risk of someone else picking him up at half price if they put him on re-entry waivers. I know it seems like a stretch, but we wouldn’t be harping on him as bad at $3.25 mil. Plus, if it was a divisional rival (I could see it being the Isles with our luck) no only would they be getting him at a cut rate, he’d be fired up to show us up (if he’s ever gonna be re-born THAT would do it), and we’d be stuck with a $3.25 mil penalty off the cap for the legenth of the contract.
Granted, there alot that has to fall in place in that monster scenerio i came up with, but the threat of another team in need, during the season, thinking he can help them for $3.25 and then they’ll bury him in the minors, while he still eats our cap, is too serious for Slats to risk calling him up.

my thought on this since it was announced
is by reporting to hartford he essentially ends his nhl career
he’s 37-38 at the end of the deal and will likely have spent the previous four years in the minors when the contract is up
he may get an invite to a team’s camp but the odds of hooking on at that point are slim to none
guess the guaranteed salary to stay in the minors was better than opting out and trying to get 1 or two mil to stay in the nhl with a team that has cap room and a need for d (see columbus, islanders)

Being sent to hartford could be reddens rebirth. Think about it with the lack of high competition maybe he can start QBing the powerplay down there regain confidence and come back in camp next year and be the pre-lockout redden that sather wanted when he signed him. This might be the part that really pushes redden to wake up the threats in the off season didnt do it maybe the actuality will.
Now in all seriousness Redden gets to play easier competition with less risk of hurting himself and probably more time with his family while still making the same amount of money how is that not a nice little retirement package right there.
this guy was a disaster the second he signed the contract. writers have mentioned how ‘classy’ redden is, but if he actually were he could’ve done the team a favor by refusing to go to the whale, thereby killing the contract. i know we’d all wish he’d pull a naslund and retire to kill the contract that way but hey i guess he’s reallllly got to feed his family….

final cuts
1st off, I would just like to say this blog rules.
2ndly, Ding-dong, REDDEN’s GONE!!!
Finally, will we keep a 7th D-man or is 15 Forwards a real possibility? I’d really like to see us break camp with McD and Stepan, but i think realistically McD’s only coming if we go with 7 D-men.

"Sorry bro, he Jason Bourned me"- Drama
Wade is a professional
And he is doing the move that makes sure he gets paid and has job security (even if that job is playing in the AHL). With his first child being brought into the world he was walking on sunshine even with all the rumors and impending doom around him. There might be some good to come of this, he may serve as a good veteran presence and pass on some lessons to young Ranger prospects (hopefully he’ll pass on few tips regarding contract negotiations). As I said before (though it wasn’t a very popular thing to say) I wish Wade well in Hartford. And I am very, very glad that the cap is in order ($3,260,833 in cap space). And even more happy that the Redden Saga is over, I feel like I will tell the story to my grandchildren one day, about the overpaid man who couldn’t do a damn thing he was advertised as being capable of doing. And the grandchildren will laugh and say, “Oh grandpa!” and roll their eyes and I will take a swig from a bottle of whiskey and bellow, “YOU DON’T KNOW HOW BAD WE FUCKING HAD IT.” And throw pennies at them, as hard as my old arms can manage.
Anyway… interesting read regarding the repercussions of the Rangers’ actions.

and then
there’s the CBC counter-point
wyshynski made the point that teams should be punished beyond having to simply pay the player; i think the team suffers enough for however long it takes to figure out a way to clear the space simply because they become handcuffed by having a chunk of their cap-space eaten up by said bad contract, and the fans in turn suffer as well for having to watch this ineptitude unfold
in the rangers’ (and sather’s) case, it’s amplified, primarily because they signed re-signed roszival twenty-four hours before signing redden….beyond the stupidity of the length/money offered to redden, why make that offer if you’ve just signed a player who does almost the same thing?
"You can be a lion maybe once in your life. If you don't make this deal, you're a

I recall a Hockey Night Live! where Butch Goring said that the Rangers were cheating the system by burying Redden in Hartford and Maloney retorted that they were not, that it was not illegal and didn’t break any rules. Goring and Maloney went back and forth politely for a little while until Maloney said something that made me fall in love with him (platonic love… of course). He said something along the lines of, “Let’s see what the Islanders do with DiPietro if he can’t shake the injury bug, I am sure you’ll be saying something different if Rick has to finish his contract in the AHL.” Would I blame the Islanders for putting DiPietro in the AHL if he can’t shake the injury bug but still wants to play hockey and get paid? No, I may laugh about it… but I think it is safe to assume that the Rangers have been being laughed at about the contracts we give out for years if not decades.
There are circumstances like the Redden contract that have no ‘happy’ or ‘fair’ solution, Wade is going to be 37 when his contract expires… at that age the chances of him making an NHL team aren’t very good (to say the least). So who is to blame? The contract? The team? The player? All parties involved? I think everyone is at blame here, and everyone is paying for it in their own way for things not working out. Even for an organization as big and wealthy as the Rangers $6.5 million lost every year to Redden with no return for it is a big bite. Anyway, I am rambling on… I anticipate Wade trying hockey at the AHL level for at least a year and then looking at his family situation and considering the cost of moving overseas.
In Hank we trust.
or maybe just not reporting to the ahl next year during training camp after wisely investing what he makes this year
the islanders aren’t exactly the poster children for wise spending (they’ll be paying alexei yashin until well after the apocalypse)
and yeah, you’re right dig, the rangers and massive contracts goes back long enough that it’s just status quo, the only difference now is this new concept of dumping them into the ether
another interesting comment i read: scott howson, the columbus gm, apparently had a similar offer on the table to redden before he accepted sather’s….we can only imagine what life would be like if wade had decided to take his declining skills to ohio….

In Hank we trust.
the ordeal still isn’t “over” next sumer his 6.5 is on our cap again, so that 3.26mil space we have with this years summer overage as a number *i think it was 5.8mil?) we’d have 9mil space next summer for the summer cap, reddens 6.5 brings that back down to 2 mil in cap space.
Of course thats better then living against the wall, but at the most, as is, we could go grab another 3rd liner…. woo.
Reddon is in it for the money……..and I would so the same thing.
When I was playing ice hockey in Brooklyn grwoing up, we had to play at 2 AM, on horrible ice and play thru the nose for the ice time…….we did it because we loved the game,
Reddon is doing this to get his huge pay check that Sather screwed up……
Reddon is not a hero for playing in thr minors……it is a smart business move…..Reddon is laughing his ass of…at 6.5 MILLION a year.
It might not count against the cap, but as fans, we are still paying for it.
Sather must go….NOW
you remember that show sliders?
about parallel worlds evolving from different decisions made in history?
sometimes i like to think there’s one such world where wade redden never became a ranger
then i think there must be another world where glen sather never accepted an offer to become gm of the rangers
that leads me through a string of ideas about other bad decisions, until eventually i get the idea of a parallel world in which gordie howe and maurice richard became rangers and led the franchise into an unprecedented golden age, winning almost every stanley cup championship between 1946 and 1970 (i figure on a two year drought at some point in the 1950s while richard, howe and andy bathgate argue over the idea of rotating the #9 which briefly interrupted their stanley cup aspirations), and built a legacy which in turn begat smart managerial decisions that led to smarter drafting in the late 1970s (i.e. not passing on mike bossy twice), which begat another mini-dynasty through the 1980s, leading to 35 championships in franchise history and a rafter so full of banners the knicks have to keep theirs in storage….also in this world the blueshirt banter site is a place where we gather every day to pay homage to the greatness of ranger teams in history, and to watch jim and joe engage in contests of who can fart more rainbows in a five minute span of time while we eagerly await the next championship, which we all know will happen next season
that leads me to believe that i’m completely bat-shit crazy, and i wonder if there’s a parallel world where i’m actually sane
"You can be a lion maybe once in your life. If you don't make this deal, you're a
mouse forever….Wouldn't you rather be a lion for one day than a mouse for life?"
oh, and dig, i'm sure there's a parallel world where every breath causes an orgasm, but on this world nobody works because they're all otherwise occupied
"You can be a lion maybe once in your life. If you don't make this deal, you're a
mouse forever….Wouldn't you rather be a lion for one day than a mouse for life?"
And in another slider dimension
Joe Sakic signed with the Rangers instead of Colorado matching his three-year $21 million deal in 1997.
And in yet another slider dimension, Mike Richter was held onto by the Predators who picked him up in the expansion draft, though he became an expensive UFA days later and the Rangers scooped him back up.
All this slider dimension talk scares me. Someone hold me.
In Hank we trust.
Lottery ticket
Why wouldn’t he report to Hartford? He’s continuing to cash in on the lottery ticket that Sather gave him when he signed that contract. And now that he’s out of the NYC spotlight, he can just play hockey without hearing all the negatives from the media and fans. Can’t blame the guy – any one of us would jump at the chance to make 5 times what we’re worth for 6 years guaranteed.
Why wouldn't he?
Pride really, but family and the money is going to see him playing in Hartford- at least for now. Redden used to be one of the better defensemen in the league… but those days are clearly in the past. If he wanted to prove something to the NHL and his doubters and naysayers he might have walked away from his contract and signed up for play in Europe or tried to get on another team… but pride is an easy thing to swallow when he has that ‘lottery ticket’ for another four years. I am not surprised he is going to report to Hartford,
In Hank we trust.
+1
i was wondering both here and on twitter with jesse spector (who’s LIGHT YEARS better than michael obernauer btw) which would prove more important to wade, being in the nhl or collecting a fat paycheck, and it looks like the paycheck won
then again, he can always invest his salary in apple this year and then refuse to report next september hoping for an nhl deal with some defensively strapped team
"You can be a lion maybe once in your life. If you don't make this deal, you're a
mouse forever….Wouldn't you rather be a lion for one day than a mouse for life?"
Let’s not forget something here……
Reddon was a decent sixth defenseman, who, like Drury was grossly overpaid.
This was Sather’s fault, not Reddon’s or Drury or the other over paid idiots Sather signed during the off season.
Sather nust go…..Ten years and nothing but failures is enough for me.

Can we call the marching band
The Flaming Trombones
I want to fill the tubas and horns with gasoline so that they become flamethrowers… until the pain becomes intense enough to render the band incapable of playing. When they hit that wall we will start hurling rocks, bottles, bricks, and doorknobs at them. I think doorknobs are a great weapon, though not often used as a projectile (which I see as a mistake). Grab a Philips head, right tighty lefty loosey, get that thing loose and chuck it.
