Rangers Analysis: The Competition on Defense
Assuming Marc Staal, Dan Girardi, Michael Del Zotto, and Michal Rozsival all have spots on the team, there are three slots currently open on the Rangers' blue-line if head coach John Tortorella chooses to carry along a seventh defenseman. Three slots open, but five players still remaining in camp after Monday's cuts that are contending for them. That puts the Blueshirts in a bit of a tough situation, and means Torts has some decisions to make over the next week. But who will fill those slots? What will the Rangers defensive corps comprise of this season? Let's take a look.
The five players that are fighting for the three spots are Matt Gilroy, Ryan McDonagh, Steve Eminger, Pavel Valentenko and Mike Sauer. Obviously the average age among these individuals is relatively young, with the oldest player being Eminger at age 26. That alone makes the competition even more closer than it already is, and below I shared my thoughts on each one of these guys and how I think they would contribute to the team if they made it.
I will start with Matt Gilroy because I am almost completely positive that he has won over the coaching staff throughout training camp and the preseason. He is playing with the battle level that was absent from his game last season, which ultimately led to him spending a portion of the year in the AHL. Coach Tortorella has praised the former Hobey Baker Award Winner over and over again over the course of the past month and to me that is a hint that Matt will be in the opening night roster in Buffalo.
Gilroy, for just a sophomore, shows a lot of patience with the puck and while playing defense in general as well. And once he has the puck, the kid can do wonders with it such as leading the rush and what not. All he needs is confidence right now, and I think that is slowly but surely building back up in him. He has talent, and I am not just saying that as a general statement. He has all-star caliber talent, we just have not seen it enough yet.
Ryan McDonagh has gotten stronger as training camp has progressed. His 6-1, 212 pound frame enables him to be a physical force out there, which is something the Rangers have not had in quite some time. They need somebody to clear the crease. They need somebody to intimidate the oppositio
n's forwards so they fear to even go near the net. Ryan has that ability in addition to his fantastic all-around play and speed. He is the full package, basically, although he is not known for his offense. But again, if he can play physical, that will end up being more important than offense considering the circumstances in which this team is in defensively.
McDonagh needs to come out and really show off in the next preseason game or two. He needs to do something that will drop Tortorella's jaw to the ground and give him a reason why he would be so valuable to the club. That should be his objective because although he has played well, he is not locked in for a spot just yet.
McDonagh's main competition, surprisingly, will be in the form of Pavel Valentenko. Valentenko, age 22, has clearly impressed the coaching staff being that he survived the first two cuts. I think what may be attractive to them is his explosive shot from the point. We saw it on Sunday night in Detroit when he blasted one off the post. In addition to that, much like McDonagh, he is a physical defenseman. So physical that, in a way, he was the Sean Avery of the AHL in that he knew how to get under the skin of the opponent.
And not only will he run his mouth, he is more than willing to back it up. That also may be grabbing the attention of the coaches.
Steve Eminger, acquired via trade from the Anaheim Ducks back in July, is the prime candidate for the seventh defenseman position at the moment. I think Tortorella likes the fact that he is a veteran presence on the blue-line and will guide the numerous youngsters throughout the year. Eminger cannot add a whole lot besides physicality to the team in my opinion. But as a seventh, he is just what the doctor ordered.
Mike Sauer does not have a place on this team. Maybe two years ago, but I do not really understand why he is still around. Alexei Semenov, who was cut yesterday, was performing better than Sauer in the preseason. He's shown Torts something, but he will not be kept around much longer if you ask me.
It all comes down to these next two preseason contests for all of these players. They may all be wearing the same jersey, but in reality they are enemies right now. They are fighting for a job on an NHL team. You better believe they will try to convert on every opportunity they have to one-up each other.

Good article Joe.
My thoughts for the last 3 spots:
I do think Gilroy will make it for the reasons you mentioned above and this is the last year of his contract so I m sure the team wants to see what he can do this season.
I think McDonagh is pretty much a lock to make the team at this point. I m confused about his weight. So far I read that he weights 228, 222 and now 217. What is it?!?!
Valentenko- I love the way he plays and his attitude, but he has has only played a handful of games the last two years and I have a feeling he will be sent to Hartford to mature, develop his game, get back up to speed and WILL be on the Rangers next year.
Sauer-I think overall he is a decent 5th or 6th dman, but we have guys better then him and there is no room for him. I feel bad for Sauer, because he is definitely good enough to play on an NHL team and he battled really hard to come back from all his injuries, At this point the best thing would be to trade him so he can start his NHL career elsewhere and get something decent in return.
Eminger-I believe he will make it as the 7th dman. There is no point in Valentenko, McDonagh or Sauer playing that role because they need to play more to develop, grow as players and get experience. Eminger already has already done all of that and is just the right veteran presence we need as a 7th d. I also think Sather would prefer to play him considering he was acquired by trade.
Valentenko
Had to come in and make the roster decisions harder.
/sarcasm
I think this competition is great. I think the org is higher on McD than Tenk, but it’s hard to ignore the surface level qualities that Tenk brings like his shot and his physical game. McD seems like his effectiveness will be measured by how much you won’t notice he’s on the ice, meaning that he’ll quietly diffuse the opposition and mix in an occasional big hit.
Either way the “loser” of this decision needs to log heavy amounts of ice time in HFD rather than languish as a 7th D in the NHL.

3rd d-man
I love the fact that we have this competition at defense this season. I believe that Pavel Valentenko should go to Hartford, and develop some more. Next year, I believe Rosie’s contract expires, and Pavel can be slotted right in his place. I like the looks of the defense for the foreseeable future with all the kids.
Lets give Sather some credit here, that is hard to do, but he got two great young kids for Gomez, both McD, and Valentenko, on the cheap, and cut his expenses. Now if he could do something about Rosie next!!!!!!!
Rozsival's deal
Expires after the 11-12 season, along with Drury’s.

I don’t think Valatenko has any shot to make the team. I just think the coaching staff is unfamiliar with him and want a longer look to evaluate him.

I’m inclined to agree with you, but the longer he gets a chance, the more opportunity he has to outplay people.

i also believe even if they really liked him which they seem to he hasnt played nearly enough at any level the last few years to be ready for consistent time at this level. on a different note if McD and Gilroy are going to be 5-6 there is no reason to waste a development year for a 22 year old as the 7th man. eminger is a piece unimportant to our future so he can be used and tossed as a 7th while valentenko getting experience playing 1st pair D in hartford would only help him and us down the line.

“The guy is just intriguing to me, and I’m getting to know him because I hadn’t seen him,” Tortorella said. “He stood in there, and we let a couple of tryouts (Garnet Exelby and Alexei Semenov) go before him, so we’ll see where it all goes.” – Tortorella, NY Daily News, 9/28
Think you hit the nail on the head. Valentenko is probably getting a real long look because he is already under contract and the coaching staff probably knows very little about his game and his style of play.

Any chance
They’re showcasing either Sauer or Valentenko as part of a trade to clear some excess players?

Volchenkov with a little more offense, I think. Similar styles at least.

I don't claim to be an expert on defensive ability,
but from what I have seen, Valentenko looks really good. His skating is above average, he has a great shot, and he’s nasty. He also has some professional experience. I like the guy and think he should stay. Yet the more I think about it, it is really difficult to find a spot for all the youth. Where would you pair them and how do you keep a young developing kid as a seventh? For all “Intents and purposes” what do you think the opening night six are going to be?
Staal-Girardi
MDZ-Rozsival
McDonagh-Gilroy
7th: Eminger
Not saying that those will be the defensive partners, but each pair listed above has one right-handed and one left-handed defenseman.
I have loved what I have seen from Pavel Valentenko, but his game is still a little raw, I like the nasty in his game but if the 22 year old plays another year in the AHL (he played 8 games last year with Dynamo Moscow, and only 61 games the previous two years for the Hamilton Bulldogs) in a more featured role he might very well benefit from it.
Mike Sauer a tricky decision, someone brought up the point that he would make a great 7th defenseman because of his injury problems and he hasn’t looked too out of place in his preseason games. While this is true, it would leave Eminger without a seat and give us very few options with him. I think Mike Sauer may find that when the music stops on the defenseman race he and Valentenko are going to be without chairs and he might be a good candidate to be moved elsewhere.
Matt Gilroy is going to make this team, he was a great pick up (perhaps overpaid but the Rangers clearly wanted him badly) and has looked pretty damn good this preseason. I have never really understood the flack he catches here on BSB, perhaps if his numbers were more like Del Zotto’s, or if he was bigger and took the body more he wouldn’t be questioned quite as much. The Matt Gilroy from last year was promising but not great, and maybe a questionable choice for our top six (though we didn’t have much depth behind him did we?). But he has worked hard to get bigger, stronger, and faster this offseason and has taken steps to avoid hitting that wall in the third quarter of the season. I think Matt Gilroy is a keeper, as Nick says he has great talent… he had a few plays last year that only a few defensemen around the league can try. He is a great skater and wasn’t shy about shooting the puck, something the blueline needs desperately.
In Hank we trust.
not totally sold on Gilroy
Gilroy has looked better in the preseason to be sure, but let’s see this improvement carry over to the regular season. He was very soft on the puck last year, and though he’s a great skater he often skated himself into bad areas on the ice when he had the puck in his own zone. He was tentative in his decision-making as well and really finished the season poorly last year.
I’m not trying to be negative here with him, but he’s an old second-year player at age 26 who needs to step up his game this year.
Prole art threat.

No doubt that he has to play better than his rookie year
Conditioning and strength is a big part of that, another big factor is confidence which I think Gilroy has a little bit more of now that he has that rookie year behind him. There aren’t many defensemen who can can lead the rush on our blueline (Del Zotto and Staal every once in a blue moon) it is very valuable to have another guy who can skate the puck into the zone and give the offense another angle of attack. At times Gilroy looks like a forward playing defense, that is how talented and comfortable he appears to be with the puck, especially cruising around the boards and around the opposition’s net. Did he get out of position plenty last year? Yes he did. Del Zotto ran into the same problem but Gilroy’s defensive play this preseason has shown some improvement in that area of his game. I’m excited to see his sophomore campaign.
In Hank we trust.
Again think about the D corps from the first couple of post-lockout seasons
Teams that fielded a blueline consisting of Malik, Strudwick, Rachunek. Tyutin was the only player with considerable upside.
I think some people are down on Gilroy because he’s very much a project on defense not just as a young player but he was a converted D in college. His natural skills allowed him to excel at the NCAA level but at this level there’s still a high amount of doubt as to whether he can control NHL level forwards.

he played 8 for moscow two years ago while playing 4 for hamilton, 7 for moscow last year before a shoulder injury. so 19 last two years, 57 the year before for hamilton.

I feel like..
If we get rid of Gilroy too early, it’s going to be like getting rid of Zubov all over again..
Zubov was light years better than Gilroy. Zubov by 26 was already an elite defenseman.
Gilroy’s unlikely to be re-signed, given the competition in camp and pressure from some younger kids. He’d have to improve by leaps and bounds to come back.

I'd be interested in Valentenko's play
This season in Hartford as the guy to come up and take Gilroy’s roster spot next year. I have a feeling he (Matt Gilroy) won’t be re-signed.
In Hank we trust.
Gilroy a right D(right shot), Valentenko is a left Dman, they really aren’t vying for the same spot. Can’t see Valentenko beating out Staal, MZD or McD on the left side ever, I like his physical play but he is slow.
Gilroys competition really is Eminger and Sauer for the 6th spot, with Girardi, Rosi holding the other RD spots and he looks like a lock unless he is traded. The question is who do they keep as the 7th guy. I would guess Eminger based on experience, rather see Sauer, outside of a couple mistakes vs Det I like his play.
Now the question is what are the pairings?
Girardi and Staal? Neither is really good at moving the puck, don’t like them together.
Rosi and MDZ makes sense and would be first unit pp.
Gilroy and McD cant see them pairing a 2nd year guy and a rookie.
Unless you put Gilroy-Staal together, you can’t avoid having him paired with youth. It’s either Gilroy-MDZ (please no) or Gilroy-McD.
Or, they don’t worry about the LD/RD stuff, which is also possible.

i bet at some point by midseason McD has moved up the chart and Rozi-Gilroy will be a pair.
by Michael Gleich on Sep 29, 2010 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions
that would be pretty rare have 2 righties paired. Rosi and MDZ worked well last year. I would like to see Gilroy and Staal in a preseason game, Gilroy has speed and can pinch and get back.
McD took the puck deep a couple of times last game and showed he could get back, makes nice crisp passes out of the zone. Would be a good match with Girardi.
that would depend on if mdz shows he can play with staal.
by Michael Gleich on Sep 29, 2010 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions
it does becomes a little awkward because we have 3 of each which naturally you pair, but only staal, girardi and rozi have really been locked into sides. mcD played some on both sides in college, gilroy is a floater and mdz at least on the points has played both sides. we could have a problem where the best 4 cant play as the top 4.
by Michael Gleich on Sep 29, 2010 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions
If there's anything we've learned this preseason
It’s that no matter who they choose, some fans will be unhappy. The opinions on each of the remaining 5 differ greatly from one person to the next.
I happen to think Gilroy, just by virtue of being on the roster for 69 games (plus however many he was scratched) last year, has the inside track for one spot. Whether that makes someone happy or not isn’t really the concern of the organization.
Also, don’t forget that waiver eligibility will be part of the decision process here. Because Gilroy signed his first contract at 25, I believe he’s waiver-eligible this year. While I’m not positive that is true, if it is, I can almost guarantee someone will claim him you send him down. So that will also play into the decision, if he’s cut, he’s gone. Similar will be true for Sauer or Eminger, so while some may want McD or Tank here, they may lose out simply for that reason.

Lets not get too rowdy on Gilroy yet
He came right out of college last season, impressed people for what, 20-30 games, then took a big dive during the middle of the season, got sent down, and came back and played somwhat up and down for the remainder of the year. But he’s never played 70 games before. How many games is a college season, 35-40 tops?
I won’t be surprised if he hits a wall around game 40 or 50.
BUT the good thing about this team this year is that we will have a reliable 7th defensman to give a rest to whoever needs one. We haven’t had that in a LONG time.
fact is...
He was playing with more heart and consistency than the R sisters all last season and was the defensive scapegoat for Torts. I think you will all be surprised at Gilroy’s improved game this season, and he will be signed by the Rangers in the off season.
not true. Rozi was one of our best D last year, especially the last 20 games of the year. we can blanket statement him and redden together but doesnt make it factual.

I want Gilroy on this team. I’m of the opinion that if they go with Staal, Girardi, Rozsival, Del Zotto, McDonagh, Gilroy and Valentenko, with Sauer first man up from the Whalepack, I will live with the young player mistakes.
As long as Valentenko is being rotated into the lineup enough so that he doesn’t stagnate. Mickey D, Gilroy, and Del Zotto will all at some point need games in the skybox, so I see no reason why the Rangers can’t play matchups with these guys and get everyone playing time.
I’m saying no to Eminger, let’s live and die with the whippersnappers.

I agree with your D choices…that what I want to see, too.
But I m pretty sure Valentenko will be sent down and Eminger will stay. Glen and Torts will go with someone with experience on D no matter how he performed in the pre-season. They will be scared to have two rookie Dman. Sather also traded for Eminger which makes me think it will give him an inside track (that doesnt make sense to me but that Glen)
Well, keep in mind he was traded for Aaron Voros, so its not exactly like Glen was out to get Eminger at all costs.
Can anybody think of another 1st round pick who played on 6 teams his first 8 years in the league?
Eminger is the very definition of a “journeyman”…..the Gaylord Perry of hockey.

Del Zotto from a defensive standpoint. I know he’s a lock, and I don’t want to divert this thread away from its focus, but is it possible that Ranger fans overrate him?
I like him, and I see a ton of potential, but I see some poor decision making in his own end and his +/- last year was atrocious.

I understand the focus on MDZ's +/-
It is hard to overlook, but even Tyler Myers had rookie mistakes (he led the league in giveaways last year). And while that is more of an offensive shortcoming than a defensive one (as plus/minus suggests) MDZ has nowhere to go but up from -20. I am looking forward to a better year from Del Zotto, especially his powerplay production and his defensive positioning.
In Hank we trust.
Yeah, I can't imagine it getting worse
I mean hey, even Leetch had a pretty big minus year his 3rd year in the league. DZ won’t be Leetch at either end, but it seems like he’s got enough smarts to realize that he’s got to take care of his own end.

I didn’t mean to say I’m not sold on him, because I think he can be a top 4 defenseman. I’m just saying give it time, let him get accustomed to a full season, the travel, 3 games in 4 nights, that sort of thing. Its just nice to know that there is going to be a 7th defenseman that we can rely on if we need to.
Not worried either, just saying he has to start whittling away at that 20 +/ rating.
(I think he will.)
Monster Shot
Not sure how true this is, but word from Canada says Valentenko’s shot was clocked at 110 mph! I haven’t really had a chance to concentrate on his play (on catching bits and pieces of the last two games), so I did not get a chance to see this “heavy shot” people have been mentioning.
If there is any validity to the 110 mph shot, then thats absurd considering some of the hardest shots officially clocked recently have been Chara’s (104-105 at a couple years back All-Star weekend) and Souray’s (I believe clocked at 106 up in Edmonton during their own skills challenge).
Tank does have a cannon, yes. He’s only put 2 on net so far in 2 games however.

Was watching Rangers in 60 last night
And it was game 6 against the Debs. The thing I loved about that team (among everything else I loved about them) was how interchangable the roles were. If you remember, Beukeboom was suspended for that awesome hit on Richer, so Alex Karpovtsev dressed and shared time with Doug Lidster alongside Leetch. They had the same thing going on with the forwards, mostly 4th liners like Kocur, Eddie O, Greg Gilbert, Kypreos, et al. But they had so much depth that it didn’t matter who dressed, they all played at some point during that Cup run, and played in meaningful games.
What I’m getting at here is that we are starting to see some real depth that we haven’t had since maybe 1994. Maybe not so much with the forwards, but like the article says, there are 5 candidates for 3 positions, and any one of them would be dressing every night if they all weren’t qualified to do it. This is a really good problem to have.
Everyone on that team had a role, and played it. It was a true testament to that team’s character as to how many guys sat for long periods of time (The Black Aces) and performed when they were called upon.

The Black Aces were all veteran guys though, not everyone can just suit up after 25-30 games off and perform at a high level. I think this is why Eminger is a lock for 7th D-man. The young guys and rookies can all be shuffled back and forth from Hartford, so just call them up when necessary. The Rangers have cleared enough cap space where the transaction fees and partial salaries of the call-ups are no longer a problem.
if i had to pick 7 from what is left i the obvious 4 (staal, girardi, mdz, rozi) with gilroy, mcD and sauer as the 7.
to me losing eminger is no loss, valentenko needs a year of just playing games not sitting in the press box and sauer has enough time down there, but with him the question was this system and injuries. Being a 7 will hopefully limit the injuries and he has shown to this point in camp he can be solid in the system. He gets a big chance tonight playing with Staal. Another reason for me is I dont see how Sauer gets through waivers, so either he is on the club or i think we have to move him rather than losing him for nothing.
Although
I said Eminger was more likely than Sauer I would much rather keep Sauer up with the club as the 7th defenseman as I think he will be put on waivers and might not clear them should he be sent down. Losing Eminger is much easier to deal with than losing Sauer to me, and really I wasn’t expecting we would trade Voros and get anything of worth from him. Eminger’s groin injury may make the situation tricky as he might not get ice and make the decision even more difficult on the coaching staff. The seven you picked are very young but I don’t think that will be the undoing of the blueline, it is about time the Rangers went with some youth.
In Hank we trust.
im with you until the very end. the rangers have never shied away from youth, on the blueline. had this conversation to an extent the other night on twitter, but the argument that really can be made with the rangers and youth is that when there has been a choice they used go old, but on D there hasnt been much or mdz isnt here at 19, McD might not be here at 21. last year we started 2 rookies in our top 6 and this year we could be looking at 4 of the 7 being basically nhl rookies or 2nd year guys. they probably go with eminger cause of his experience, but that would defy the talk of the leadup being about how it would be about performance not salaries and names.
by Michael Gleich on Sep 29, 2010 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions
Sometimes the decision has to be about business. Maybe sauer and eminger stay for fear of losing them on waivers. A year in hartford will not hurt valentenko or mcd and eoither can be called up when needed diue to injury. Also, sather had said they tried to sign eminger last year, so there is something there they like.
So going with 2 guys who may not be better than the others may be a better business decision than going with the pure youth. Itis a long season and you can’t afford to lose your depth on day 1 through waivers. Ther is no rush to have every spot filled with rookies. The better long term plan is for them to play a year in hartford, else we see a repeat of gilroy’s fall off.

Sauer looked good tonight
Still wanna see more of Mickey D tho. Its between him and Eminger for the 7th spot IMO
GILROY SHOULD PLAY
i go to BU and i watched Gilroy play here all throughout my freshman year
i was ecstatic when i found out that we had signed him
he played forward his whole life, but then attempted to walk on to the BU team
at the time, the team was stacked with forwards, and Gilroy was forced to play defense to have a chance to make the team, which he obviously did
this probably explains his stellar offensive upside, as well as why he had problems adjusting to defense in the NHL (BU usually doesn’t play the most physical style of defense anyway. And he played with Redden most of the time last year, as I recall)
the guy is a gamer, and will clearly do anything to play and/or improve, as demonstrated by his switch to defenseman in college, and his willingness to be demoted to the AHL for a few games last season to work on his D.
he has great puck handling skills, works the point effectively on the PP, and can score.
If any of you recall when we won the national championship in 2009, you know that we scored 2 goals in the final minute with the goalie pulled to tie. Gilroy was instrumental in setting up the game tying goal, getting the puck near the top of the slot, making the defense think he was going to shoot, and then sliding a beautiful one time pass to his right that was hammered home to tie it. Fantastic clutch play.
it would be a mistake to omit him from this team, i think he’s going to have a great year and dramatically improve from last year
i think he does nothing but improve the already excellent youthful defensive corps we have in place, with staal, girardi, and MDZ leading the way
