Rangers News: Rangers, Staal "closer" to a deal

Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants is reporting that an nhl source has told him the Rangers and Marc Staal are "getting closer" to a new deal.

From Andrew Gross: (click link for full story)

When I asked the source whether the issue was more length of contract, as I’ve been speculating, or the money aspect, the source replied, "It’s always about the money." However, it still seems like length of contract was a negotiating point as that ties into the money aspect. As stated before, Staal likely wants a shorter-term deal so he can get to unrestricted free agency quicker while the Rangers likely would like to lock their No. 1 defenseman up for a longer period.

As you may have noticed in the Fan Posts, sportsnet.ca is also reporting the story.

Hopefully this will get done in the coming days.

Lest hope the deal is done before training camp, so Marc is not behind once the season starts.

Just sign him

Torts supposedly said he doesn’t want Staalsy at Training Camp unless he is under contract, I just hope he can get inked and locked up before things move along too much. I hope it is not a repeat of Dubinsky last year with Sather fumbling the deal until the last possible moment. I could live with anything in the $4.5-5.5 million range.

When I had Andrew Gross on Rink Side Radio two Monday's ago

he made it clear that Tortorella was going to handle this year’s holdout with Staal (if there is one) much different than how he handled Dubinsky’s last year. You won’t hear Torts calling this holdout “stupid” or demanding that they get done so that Staal shows up at camp.

Torts will handle this the same way that it’s being handled with the press right now, by keeping quiet and letting the dust settle.

That is what is best for the team, the less drama and scrutiny around Staal being an RFA this long the better for the team and the locker room. I was not very fond of how Torts handled the Dubinsky situation last year, I think it hurt Dubinsky’s confidence (though he put together his best year statistically… which a lot of people seem to forget).

That is good news and I agree that no good came from Torts comments last year!

by CTrangerfan on Sep 8, 2010 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree that Torts should keep his mouth shut on negotiations…
But I’m not convinced it hurt Dubi’s confidence.

yeah that really pissed me off what Torts did there

good to hear we want Marc for a long time

this was one of the rare times i'm sitting in front of twitter and get a jump on something of interest

like i said in the fanpost

we’ve got so many thing to kill sather over, but if he really did learn a lesson from the dubinsky holdout last year and gets staal signed for training camp then kudos to him

i need a shower after writing that

about time. If Sather didn't give a handout of huge contract to Wade Redden...

this Staal/Dubin drama might not have taken place!! Ah, well…20/20 hindsight, right, Right?

or overpay Gomez, Drury, Rosi and Girardi. He shouldn’t have even negotiated with Girardi until Staal was locked up.

by Kmp on Sep 8, 2010 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think that would of happened because of Staal's side

If I am Marc and company I am waiting for Girardi to get signed to build off that contract. I agree this should of been done the next day though.

I think it would still play out the same….
It’s not those other contracts that are inhibiting negotiations, it’s Sather’s uncompromising belief that its acceptable not only to overpay free agents (because they have all the leverage), but also to be a complete dick to RFA’s (because they have no leverage).

i would love for somebody to interview sather

and actually put that question to him until he breaks down and gives an answer that isn’t crap

“So Glen, why do you make such a splash on the UFA market but refuse to open the purse strings for the organization’s home grown youth movement?”

“Well, you know, you can be a lion maybe once in your life. If you don’t make this deal, you’re a mouse forever….Wouldn’t you rather be a lion for one day than a mouse for life?”

“Ummm…..okay, but why nickel and dime Dubinsky and Staal when you overpaid for Gomez and Redden (among others)?”

“Did you know I won five Stanley Cups as a GM in Edmonton, and I traded for Wayne Gretzky?”

“Yeah, but—”

“I also was the GM when we drafted Messier, Kurri, Coffey, Fuhr, Lowe……”

I am personally placing a hundred-dollar bounty on the head of Tim McCracken. He's the head coach and chief punk on that Syracuse team.

You're comparing apples to oranges

Staal, like Dubi before him, was asking for crazy amounts of money. Dubi was asking for 4 mil per, if Staal wanted anything close to what Reddon’s getting, he is just as nuts. They both have no leverage, Reddon had all the leverage. I’m not saying that Reddon is worth even a fraction of his $6.5 per, but RFA’s aren’t going to see UFA money until arbitration. Union rules.

by BuckarooClub on Sep 9, 2010 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd love to see him locked up for 5 to 6 years

I know smarter GMs will look past his paltry point totals and realize his value lies in his ability to keep the shots and scoring chances against down vs top competition, but if guys like Keith and Green are making out at a little above $5mn/yr then a contract that will expire right around by the time he’s 30 while still paying him $4mn or so a year is a damn good deal.

Unless the money is good, can’t see him doing more than 4 years

I just want to know why is he trying to be a ufa faster

I don’t understand that. Let’s say he gets 5 mil two years. Is that his ideal situation? Cause really in two years he’s not going to evolve into a 7 mil a year star defenseman. There isn’t two many in the league if any worthy of that. Don’t get me wrong I love staal I’m not trying to undervalue him but I just don’t understand. I know overall when you hit unrestricted free agency you get paid more but I don’t think he will get much of a raise if he gets 4.5 to 5 mil per. I just have an odd feeling staal wants out of this org.

No, but if he continues to increase his offense, or especially if he puts up, say, 10-15 PP points this year, he’s going to get up to the $5-6m range, which is more than he would command right now. Any player should want to get to UFA as fast as possible…open market creates more leverage, thus they can command more money.

Maybe he doesn’t think the Rangers are contenders…

by drhgzang on Sep 9, 2010 1:38 AM EDT up reply actions

There is no need to "lock him up"

A two year deal worth 2.75 per is best for both sides. Staal gets a raise and gets to arbitration ASAP. In two years, we’ve got ALOT of cap, and can match a big offer, if he’s become a premiere player.

by BuckarooClub on Sep 9, 2010 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions

If the deal is not long tern I hope Glen is smart enough to leave himself a chance

to work a new deal before he is a free agent.

Completly understand ufa equals more money..

But in his case I don’t know if it means much more. Like I said if he gets 5 mil 2 years now I can’t seem him commanding much more at all really. No offense You say if he improves 10 to 15 points like it’s easy to do, he’s going to be in a strictly defensive role for this team for at least this year and probably next with us having little to no solid defenders. Remember what happened when torts said he wanted to push staal to be a better two player he fell off a little defnesivly. Although he did make some strides offensivly i think he will be primarily a one way guy which his Improvements being limited because he’s already a top notch defender now. So I can’t see his agent not telling him like hey if you want to be here for sure take the 5 year 25 mil deal because two year you hit ufa you get a raise of what 500k. I don’t know I’m probably just really worried he’s walking when alls said and done.

by klh2009 on Sep 9, 2010 4:35 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

History has shown that RFA’s take roughly a 40% discount, based on their expected win production and such. If you’re saying $2.5m a year, Staal would command almost double that on the open market. Look at the defenseman that just signed..Volchenkov, Michalek, Hamhuis…Staal’s as good as any of them and they commanded $4-4.5m in a d-heavy market. If you’re saying $5m a year…well giving him $5m is the equivalent of saying he’s an $8m defenseman on the open market, so he’s not getting that much. If he did get the Sather bump, then yes, he’s not getting more on the UFA market.

I didn’t say 10-15 points like it’s easy, I said 10-15 PP points specifically. His ES production (which was top 10 in the NHL last year, despite the early hiccups) will increase some, but probably not that much as he hits his prime. It’s giving him 200 minutes on the PP that would be a problem. He would have to work along side MDZ, since MDZ will be on the PP1 unit for as long as he’s here. Possible, but perhaps not likely.

Is it fair to hope that staal signs immediately so that we can officially declare the end of wade redden? If staal signs a contract in the neighborhood of 4 mil per, Redden is done, and lets face it staal while having no negotiation rights, is worth 4 mil per… I think whats taking so long is that sather for once is trying to do the right thing, and lock him up long-term rather than short term causing him yet again to overpay a UFA who’s price will hopefully be driven up by consistently good play… Kudos for sather trying to get a long term deal, i forsee a 3 year deal coming… i’d love to see a nice 7 or 8 year deal, but thats not going to happen…
