Rangers Recap: Rangers Manage to Grab a Point, Lose to Bolts in OT
I guess we should be satisfied with the one point the Rangers picked up in tonight's 2-1 overtime loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, because they were outplayed two out of the three periods and probably did not even deserve it. A very strong third period saved them from being shutout by rookie Cedrick Desjardins and star Marian Gaborik was invisible until he scored the tying goal. It wasn't the Rangers' night and that is the bottom line, but still they came away with a point and will be right back at it Sunday against the Panthers.
Much like in New Jersey on Wednesday night, the Rangers were atrocious in the first period. They were turning the puck over in the offensive and neutral zones, which led to at least six or seven odd-man rushes for the Lightning in the period. At 13:03 Dana Tyrell capitalized on an odd-man rush when his fanned-on pass slid under Henrik Lundqvist to give Tampa a 1-0 lead. Other than that, Lundqvist was spectacular in the opening stanza, making nine saves and a few of them on Steven Stamkos. This was only the beginning of Henrik's eventful night, though.
The Bolts really brought it in the second period when they outshot the Rangers 15-13, which brought out the best in both goaltenders. Desjardins was great; I will give the kid credit. However, the Rangers were repeatedly shooting right at his pads. It seemed as if he was dropping on almost every shot, so all the Blueshirts needed to do was lift the puck. They were unable to do that and I think helped Desjardins out a bit because of it.
But Lundqvist was the story of the second, making saves on each of the 15 shots he faced. The defense left him alone often tonight, so he had to be very aware of his surroundings. I think he did a great job of that, especially in the second, when the Rangers were on the penalty-kill.
As they have for most of the season, the Rangers came out flying in the third period. They knew it was desperation time and that a goal was needed. It took until there was just 45 seconds left in regulation for Dan Girardi to find Marian Gaborik open in the slot for the tying goal, but they got it and forced overtime, as well as picked up a key point in the standings.
That pleasure did not last very long, because former Islander Nate Thompson buried the game-winner just 19 seconds into overtime, shocking the Rangers and snagging the win for the Bolts. I don't think the defense expected it, nor did Lundqvist, so basically the entire team was caught off guard on the final play of the game.
As I said, the Rangers owe Henrik Lundqvist big time because he is the only reason this game was even in reach of them tying it. The Lightning showed their offensive skill in this game, but Hank had answers for most of the shots the Bolts put on net. I think he will be getting the night off tomorrow, though, since it is a 5:30 puck drop and Martin Biron is about due for a start.
Gaborik may have scored a big goal, but he was nowhere to be found prior to that moment. Head coach John Tortorella put it perfectly when saying that Marian is struggling with confidence, because that seems to be exactly the problem. Gabby just doesn't look like himself out there and he isn't giving the team what they need. Something needs to spark him.
The Rangers were solid on the penalty-kill considering they were able to contain the league's third best powerplay unit in the Bolts. Again, Brian Boyle and Brandon Prust were a big part of this and sacrificed the body often. Those two are invaluable to this team because of the effort they bring to the ice night in and night out. You gotta love ‘em.
I also thought Dan Girardi and Marc Staal had strong games on defense. They kept St. Louis, Stamkos and Lecavalier off the scoresheet, so that is something to be proud of.
Luckily, the Rangers resume action tomorrow night (Sunday) against the Panthers in Sunrise, Florida. If they can grab two points in that game, a total of 3 out of 4 on this Floridian road trip is not bad at all.
Also, in other news, the Islanders have traded goaltender Dwayne Roloson to the Tampa Bay Lightning for a defensive prospect. I guess Desjardins, despite his great performance, will be returned to the AHL then.

Dwayne Roloson winning the lottery. Good recap of the game, gor a point when they likely shouldn’t have and whats is going on with Gabby?
Like Torts said, I think a lot of it is in his head. He is having a down season, which happens to the best of us. Hopefully he can recover and pick it up in the second half of the season. He just needs something to happen to spark him.

Last year he found a comfort zone to start off the year with Prospal. This year he got injured early on and has been playing with a lot of different linemates, although he’s been getting more consistently paired with at least Stepan. It’s disappointing that he’s not lighting the lamp as much as last year but overall the team is doing better so if he does find his game then they’ll be even better.

Great game by Hank. Looks like he is and is staying in the zone Not that he played last game against TB bad, he was good in that game but this game he was just fantastic. Glove hand was sharp he was just great. Tough break for Gilroy in OT he has been real good but not sure what he was doing on that OT winner. Both teams could of had 4 or 5 goals good game by Desjardins.
In an Ideal world I would have all ten fingers on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
Frolov
Great game, I have never seen him try and hustle so hard (for a full game) like he did tonight.

Its been like that for a few games now. He’s throwing the body a bit and working harder to forecheck. If he’s not going to score 20 goals, at least he should put in the effort in the corners and make it look like he’s an NHL caliber player. Hope he can keep it up.

I thought the Frolov-AA-MZA line had a good game. Created chances, good forecheck. I hope Torts keeps them together for a bit (although that’s prob way to much to ask from our mad scientist of a coach).
They'll be split up as soon as they have a single bad shift

It’s pretty encouraging that we’re good enough as a unit to play like shit and still get a point from one of the top teams in the East.

That "top team in the East"...
was only 3 points ahead of NY going into this game. There’s no reason why we shouldn’t be getting a win or 2 instead of 3 losses. Hot goaltenders were the story last night.
Moore
Real glad to see that NO one let Dominic Moore near the net after his penalty. Even rozi & eminger not taking that shit is a good sign this team is on the same page.

Eminger absolutely destroyed Moore on a play stoppage late in the third period when Moore was hovering around Hank after a save again. Even though Eminger got burned on the play to begin with, it was awesome to see Moore hitting the ice. Good job by the whole D after too many hits on Hank in the 1st period.

I think every D-man except Gilroy had a turn abusing Moore. Boyle and Dubinsky each took a turn too. Nice to see. Very nice.

hank was superb tonight
i thought MZA had another strong game, nearly scored but was robbed on a very nice pad save from desjardins
i also thought gilroy skated well again, except for screwing up on the game-winner. he created several good opportunities
prust and boyle played their usual solid game, especially on the PK
I listen to Enter Sandman before taking exams. I wear the exact same jersey every Giants game. The Rangers goal song goes off in my head when I achieve small successes in life.

Always happy to get the road point in a game they were outplayed in, as Nick said.
One thing concerns me. We’ve been saying “well they won despite being outplayed” or “well at least they got a point, because they got outplayed” a little too much lately for my comfort. Eventually those things have a way of turning around. They will need to raise the level of their game.

Well...
I thought we threw some good rubber at the net but Desjardins was superb. I don’t think we played as bad as everyone seems to think we did. Too many odd rushes, that’s for sure. We just couldn’t sustain pressure…but, then again, neither could they. It was a good hockey game played by two good teams or a bad hockey game played by two good teams….depending on ones point of view. What this game tells me is that Tampa Bay and the Rangers are pretty much neck and neck in terms of team quality.
They did impress me with their ability to tangle up our game along the boards. I think they prepared for it. That’s been our strength. We win the battles along the boards and in the corners. From what I saw they didn’t get suckered into a fight. They sent one guy in against our two guys and cordoned off the perimeter. That way we couldn’t break out because they were there to pounce when the puck broke free. I’d need to see a replay of the game but that’s how it looked. It was a new defensive system and it worked against us like a charm because we can beat em two on two.
Anyway, I’ll take the point. I think we worked hard but still have a lot to smooth out. Stepan looked lost a lot of the game. Rozi hasn’t looked right the past few nights. Gabby was nowhere to be seen while Stamkos and St. Louis were everywhere.
The power play is really awful – they just look tentative and lost, bad puck movement and turnovers galore. I don’t know if this is a coaching thing or what, but I don’t understand it.
Well, fuck it, take the point and turn the page – we’re undefeated in 2nd games of back-to-backs and they should come out and play nasty tomorrow after this disappointment.
Their centers are 20, 22 and 24, and 33 years old. Young centers typically struggle to win faceoffs, and we have a bunch of youth. Stepan couldn’t do it consistently in college, so it stood to reason he’d only get worse in the NHL. Boyle’s much improved this year, but is still below 50%.
It’s one of those things…they’ll get better (hopefully) with experience, but it’s something that is going to be a problem all season.

I thought if Gilroy gets down quick enough, puck smothered, no play in front. Overall though, a good game. Kept Stamkos, Vinny L, and St. Louis off the board. I’ll take that as a win of sorts. About Moore…I was enjoying watching him get wrecked after each whistle.
Rangers FTW!
by BleedsRangerBlue on Jan 2, 2011 1:59 AM EST reply actions
Gilroy broke the golden rule of all d-men. Take the body not the puck. He MUST take the man out of that play. These are the kinds of errors that they sent him down to the AHL to polish up PRECISELY because we did not want to lose games like this. He’s been playing well, but this is very disappointing because it shows that he just might not “get it.”
Not that MDZ wouldn’t have done something similar.
d
WE NEED A PP QB!! Can’t say it enough times. We need to score regularly on the PP because Gaby is playing like a stiff right now and can no longer be relied on to be our go to “sniper.” Dubi played well in spite of his other linemates. Team scoring is what this team does and having an even decent PP will help tremendously. I don’t think teams are afraid to take penalties against us which means they take liberties. Getting points in games you don’t play well in is fine as they would have come up with nothing last year. Actually they played very well in the 3rd as they started to turn it around during the 2nd so it’s not like the whole game they were playing bad.
We are close - Some thoughts on the future
Rangers need help scoring. Frolov is a major bust. Fedotenko is also a dissapointment. Thats why teams can key so easily on Gabby and shut him down. Some moves I would love to see:
Brad Richards to NY – even if it means parting with either MDZ or Gilroy in a package – Rangers play of late suggests that they need one or the other but not both.
Matt Moulson – Free agent at end of year and most definitely fits the style that Torts likes to play … probably could be had for a second or third round pick judging by the way Snow is managing over there.
Release Frolov – this guy was a third liner at the end of last season in LA … its quite apparent why now.
Zuccarello is too small for the NHL – I know it would be fantastic if he was another St. Louis – but he is not … lets be real here. There are concerns about his skating. If you are small you MUST BE a great skater to have any chance in the NHL. The kid is probably another Ken Gernander – career AHL player at best.
Boogey Man – Buy him out – I think he may be done anyway – Concussions and fighting don’t go together.
+1
Yea, I still feel that way about Zuccarello. I’m going along with the ride and he has impressed me but only based upon what my expectations are. He still hasn’t proven he can make it in the league let alone the Rangers.
I’d keep Gilroy over MDZ
Boogey….is gone.
I understand not believing in MZA, but for the record, St. Louis wasn’t even in the league at age 23, and wasn’t the player he is now until he turned 27. So MZA is ahead of his curve a little bit, at least in terms of making it to the big show.
Not everyone walks into the league and becomes a point-per-game player.

Yea...
I did notice that too. He spent about a quarter of the season in the AHL when he was 25 years old. This goes to my argument that we need to let our talent season more and bring them up in stints. Unfortunately a lot of people around here seem to think that getting sent down is an assault on a player’s egos that jeopardizes their entire careers.
It is also worthy of note that St. Louis DOMINATED when he was in the AHL which is why he kept getting shots at playing in the NHL. Far from ruining his game, it allowed him time to perfect it.
d
Certainly true on St. Louis’s AHL time, but if you take out the NA adjustment period, MZA was point per game type in the AHL as well over the last 20 or so, and again, at a younger age.
If we were a team with the kind of talent up front as SJ, Van, Det, or Phi, I’d say let him go back and continue to progress. We’re a team full of grinders without a lot of pure offensive skill though, and while it hasn’t translated on the scoreboard yet, MZA been generating chances for himself and others with decent frequency, it’s worth it to keep him in an offensive role, at least until the other proven top 6 guys (Callahan, Prospal) are fully healthy. Then you reevaluate.
As for top 6 minutes, he’s not going to play on our 3rd line as long as Prust is on the roster, and he’s a waste on the 4th, so I have no issue with him playing top 6 time. I think Dubi-AA-MZA is the real way to go. While Fro-AA-MZA looked good last night, Frolov these days doesn’t know what to do with the kind of setups MZA could get him.

I’m wondering what you think after this debacle in Florida. On the one hand, it does look like he’ll be able to capitalize sooner or later. I mean, he is creating some opportunities and getting shots but not closing. My problem is that the overall dynamic of the club is shifting. Our bread and butter is hit and grind, hit and grind. I know its tempting to want to add some flash into the mix, but now with Cally and Feds out, and with MDZ back in the lineup….I don’t know man, I think MZA is not what the club needs right now…it may be what Gabby needs, but not the club.
2 cents
If you want my honest opinion, we’re seeing the tide turn on what has been a team that cannot control puck possession, due to their terrible faceoffs and lack of skill players.
Your point is well worth noting, but Dubi-Stepan-MZA was by far and away the best line against FLA, so I have a hard time indicting him after it.

Richards is NOT LEAVING DALLAS
They’re in first place right now in their division & a big reason is b/c Richards is having a great season. Keep dreamin.
I think that Josh Bailey is more our style than Matt Moulson, but either or is a good pickup.
Frolov just needs to figure out what the coach wants. It’s apparent he’s becoming more of a Torts-style player as the season progresses.
Fedotenko is also a dissapointment.
Fedotenko has been exactly what he is. He’s a 2-way forward that puts up 35 pts a season, give or take a couple. I know people got excited when he set the world on fire in the preseason, but if you were expecting a 25-25-50 season from him was going to be disappointed. I think he’s had a fine season for what he is.

one interesting observation
If there is one thing the rangers have suceeded in this year is shutting down a team’s best player for the most part…stamkos was kept off the score sheet in the two games the rangers have seen them. Ovi doesn’t have a point in the two games we’ve seen him. The rangers have taken care of kovi these last couple of games and while he may have had an assist in their last meeting the rangers held Sidney crosby to no shots on goal wen we saw him last in Pittsburgh

The coaches have definitely given Gilroy the green light, otherwise he would have been benched after his pinch halfway up the left side boards inadvertently led to the first TB goal when Gabby finally decided to check someone instead of get back on D. (Did anyone see him destroy a guy on that check in the third?)
MZA is lighting fast. He cancelled a late odd man rush by flat out running down the entire group heading up ice. I killed the DVR recording or I’d find the play.
Faceoffs are killing us. With the pathetic passing lately, it’s too hard for NY to maintain possession so losing in the circle becomes critical. Dubinsky moved up to Gabby’s line is good, but I’d guess the primary reason is Stepan’s poor FO results.
Let me know how that works out for you . . .
"Calm down Francis."
This team doesn’t quit. That’s the good news.
I also don’t thinks it’s a good idea to get trade/free agent happy. [Been there, done that!] I don’t want Richards. I’m happy to play these.
A team is a team. Frolov and Fedetenko have not been “busts.” Maybe they don’t get resigned next year but they do contribute. Arguably, the most consistent line has been Feds-Boyle-Prust. There’s still time in the season for Frolov. He’s a big body and with a couple of breaks, well, ……. We’ve seen busts.
The only real problem is that the salary cap makes it important that your highest paid player not be a fourth line center who gets no ice during crunch time when you’re behind.
All in all. I’ll stand pat, play these, and see what develops. No need to panic.
by It may HAVE to Last a Lifetime on Jan 2, 2011 11:23 AM EST reply actions
I can’t imagine why anybody would think Fedetenko is a bust … he was a last minute one mill signing. He’s noticeable every game and puts up secondary points pretty often. What more could you want for that price tag? Frolov, different story.

Time to look at Shea Weber since he’s an RFA after this year because Nashville might not be able to afford him. Weber is not having a great year but you know he will demand “Doughty money.” Also look at someone like Phillips from Ottawa that is a physical, lefty D. I keep hearing Gilroy is going to Tampa or Florida. We’ll see.
Most disturbing stats for TB game
Rangers 44% (30 of 68) on faceoffs
4th Line Ice Time

Drury 7:10
Weise 6:36

Gilroy
Is the reason they lost the game. He played that last rush as if it were an odd-man 2-on-1 or something. There were NO open guys, but he left his man to slide like a fool, which is why Thompson was wide open for the tap in. No idea what Gilroy was thinking there. Just stay on your guy and nothing happens. Torts didn’t want to mention him in the post-game directly, but he did say, “I was disappointed with the ending. We over reacted. It was really a nothing play.” He was spot on. No reason to take yourself out of the play with a slide when you could just cover your man and let the other D-man do his job.

we can put that loss on Gilroy, but I want to put some blame on Frolov
for a guy that was labeled a scorer, how in the hell do you not score on a deke where you have the goalie flat on his face?
I screamed last night how the f do you not finish on that?
we were going to score on that goalie, Gaborik and what a great pass by Girardi, but that would of been the game winner
im not gonna bug out, but thats the 3rd loss to Tampa this season

we should win our next 3 games

I wouldn’t trade Hank for any other goalie, but that first goal was a joke. Literally, a dead person would have stopped it. He makes the most incredible saves, then let’s in joke goals. That is what is frustrating.
On another note, rghis team is missing its second leading scorer from last year, gabby is not producing at a normal level, everyone bitches about needing secondary scoring, yet they are 7th or 8th in the league in goals per game. That shows me they are prducing plenty of secondary scoring and if gabby plays better, look out.

Thinking back to Pittsburgh
The Bolts have pulled down a #1 in Stamkos and a #1 in Hedman – and now seem like they’re headed in the right direction.
Can you imagine how hard they’d have to work at NOT succeeding to duplicate the Pen’s draft history?
2011 #1
2012 #2
2013 #5
It puts into perspective how sleazy Pittsburgh’s actions were. What’s even more amazing is how Pen fans can’t understand the animosity the rest of the league has for their team.
