A Quick LTIR Explanation

Photo

With the news that Alex Frolov is done for the year, he will likely be placed on long term injured reserve (LTIR) for the remainder of the season. When a player is placed on LTIR, it gives the team more breathing room in regards to cap space. To be brief, the team can "recover" the pro-rated cap hit from a player on LTIR and use it to go over the cap. However, that overage is only needed if a team is going over the $59.4 million cap ceiling. The Rangers are not going over that threshold, so they don’t "gain" the extra cap space, at least not right away.

The way the Rangers can use LTIR when not going over the cap ceiling is at the deadline. Right now, the Rangers have been "banking" cap space to use at the deadline (that’s where pro-rated cap hits come into effect). For each day that the Rangers have had Frolov, Chris Drury, Vinny Prospal, Ryan Callahan, and Erik Christensen on LTIR, they have been banking more "cap space", which is really flexibility. While LTIR allows teams to go over the cap for a period of time, it also allows teams like the Rangers (who are not going over the cap) to take on additional cap space at the deadline, and then using that LTIR overage they accumulated throughout the season.

To quickly summarize, when the Rangers officially place Alex Frolov on LTIR, they bank an extra $16,129 per day ($3 million divided by the 186 day season) that they can use at the deadline if they want to make a big splash. LTIR provides the Rangers flexibility to make that splash. Of course, whether they decide to make that move, or if that move is necessary at this point in time, is a whole other story.

Thanks

Great breakdown. I knew about the pro-rated LTIR formula but not about banking.

Anyone got a link that explains the entire NHL cap structure?

Let me know how that works out for you . . .

NHLSCAP.com or Capgeek are your best bets.

But a quick overview, teams “bank” spare cap space to use at the deadline (salary / 186). When the Rangers sent down Todd White, they gained $12k per day to use at the deadline. Salaries are pro-rated based on (salary / 186) * days remaining in season. Capgeek’s daily tracker is your best bet to really figure out the numbers.

I feel really bad for Frolov

Would have liked to seen him play with Vinny Prospal.

Don’t be too sarcastic. for a 2nd or 3rd round draft pick or a 2nd line AHLer, I think Iginla would be a great pickup for the remainder of the season, but only if we give up scraps not premier AHL talent. Clagary is falling fast and that might give him up cheap and start rebuilding this year.

I am an Iginla fan. His passion for the game and his scoring ability have long made him a premier winger in the West. He could easily be the experience we need to get these rookies over the hump. He’s much more vocal than Drury and plays a Callahan style game. If he can score again he would be a steal for the playoffs.

I wouldn’t expect to get him for so little. And besides, he’s got two more years after this at 7 mil cap. Do we really want that?

by j-red on Jan 10, 2011 1:17 PM EST up reply actions

I’d pass on Iginla…in my opinion he’s past is prime and is a shadow of the player he used to be…three or four years ago definitely but not now

There are better ways to spend the money we would

use on Iginla. And we wouldn’t have to give up any prospects.

I think Step could make the move to wing more easily than AA can and I wouldn’t mind having richards here…just dont think we need him

Other than Semin though, there isn’t much out there worth the money in FA this year. I still would like to see them take a flier on Tanguay in case Kreider can’t step in, but the roster seems pretty set next year:

Dubi-Stepan-Callahan-MZA-Anisimov-Gaborik-Avery-Boyle-Prust-Drury-Boogaard-Christensen are all under contract or likely to be re-signed. That leaves guys like Weise, Kreider (presuming he signs), Grachev, fighting for a forward spot that gets vacated when Booger isn’t needed. That doesn’t leave a lot of room for free agents.

Obviously Richards rumors will never ever go away until he signs next season, and the extra depth is never a bad thing, but I would not expect much to happen next season other than to ride out the contracts of Drury, Avery, and Christensen. After 2011-12, that’s when I’d expect a splash, with Dustin Penner looming as an absolute perfect fit for this team.

And I'm still not

convinced that Semin can thrive without AO, Mike Green, and Backstrom.

Never know though, still evaluating.

Plus of course, now add Wolski to the list, which means another forward spot not available to slot in a $7m center.

$7M really? I guess the only way this would be doable would be getting rid of Drury or Rozy. I’d still want him but that right price just got harder to swallow.

C’mon Glen work that magic.

This is exactly why sather who had assembled some depth at the start of the season traded noone. There were several posters at seasons start clamoring for sather to trafe playe x or y because we had too many players. The injuries the Rangers have experienced have shown you keep as much talent as you are able.

Unfortunately, I think frolov’s KHL career has officially begun as he hasn’t shown in the first half of a season a good reason for another club to throw some money at him. Too bad as he has played well lasy few games and if he could’vs started to score, the 3angers could get dangerous.

Good job sather keeping depth! You have given the team a chance to fight through the injuries while winning!

I think maybe jeremy williams gets a call up for 4th line duty. He plays tough and can score on the AHL level like Weiss.
