Wow...

Love the deal. Wolski has been streaky, but has a huge upside & is only 25! Hopefully, he can find his scoring touch. Looking forward to seeing Valentenko up soon.

by nyrangerfan521 on Jan 10, 2011 5:14 PM EST reply actions

A bit mixed on this one...

Rozisval was playing some solid hockey, provided a nice veteran presence on a team currently riddled with injury. A lot of cap hit from Wolski as well…a guy who appears inconsistent since arriving in Phoenix.

On paper…a good patch for the absence of offense, make the roster younger.

I suppose this means Del Zotto is getting ready to return…?

Although Wolski didn’t get along with Tippett (I think) he could click really well with Gaborik. So I guess Del Zotto comes up and McDonaugh stays?

Lately not so much, only bad move of the offseason was Boogaard, you could debate Frolov but now that he is injured you never know what he could have done in the second half of the season.

by Dig Deep on Jan 10, 2011 5:38 PM EST up reply actions

Boogy has been great when he plays

You’ve got to give him that. Can’t fault him for being injured. And the fact that’s he’s LTIR means if his haters should be loving him for giving us space.

by BuckarooClub on Jan 10, 2011 6:39 PM EST up reply actions

Bust, bust and bust...

Frolov sucked dog turds, Boogy got injured by getting his ass kicked(which is what he was brought in to do), Todd White hasn’t played… and Biron has been pretty good. I would grade his job this year in FA as a D at best.

This trade a B- for now. We’ll see in the coming weeks if that can be improved.

by NYdemo on Jan 10, 2011 6:54 PM EST up reply actions

Look, Frolov did not suck, neither has Boogy nor White. None of them are stars, for sure, but they don’t suck. The Rangers are playing well yet you act like they are licking the basement. We are playing well because all of the elements are, more or less, fitting into place.

if they aren’t on the first or second line we must hate them.

by voice22 on Jan 11, 2011 12:48 AM EST up reply actions

Forgot White came to us in a trade, not FA. For White to sit on the shelf while Brashear is someone else’s problem is fine with me, I rescind my criticism of that deal.

I’m certainly not unhappy about the way the team is playing and don’t recall commenting on that recently. Frolov has been as big a bust as Higgins was and it’s hard to argue that. Frolov was not brought here to be a 4th liner. He was brought here to score 30+ goals and be a force but he turned out to be just another under-performer. I don’t hate the guy, wish him ill will as some others did, I just think the signing was another bust. What we’re happy most about with Frolov is that he’s on LTIR and a 1 year deal. That says enough.

Sather has done well dishing his bad contracts, but it doesn’t change the fact that he still inked the bad(overpaid for too long) deals.

Yeah, 24 and it seems like each season his put up less numbers (except for last year) it should be the other way around and should be getting more ice time.

Now I haven’t seen him play one bit so im just going of papers, but I imagine GM and scouts have and might know a bit more then us.

Im sure if he could have got more, he would have got more. This does have more upside for us so its a good risk v. reward trade. For them, they were never going to qualify him. Not many team would qualify a 15g scores at 4mil.

Rozsival is a good solid D-man, and although his cap hit is 5 million dollars, his actual salary is only 3 million. Thus is makes him more affordable.

Not true...

He was the Avs leading scorer when he was traded to the Yotes last year. I don’t remember the numbers but he was having a career year. He is such an insanely good player who just doesn’t seem to give two s*its about PLAYING the game it will drive Ranger’s fans nuts. In one game he’ll score 3-4 points and then he won’t have another point for 3-4 games. He was our 1st line LW, our 1st line C, our 2nd line LW, our 3rd line LW, and a benched player in his time with the Avs. You will love and hate him.

Hard to believe, but i’m actually applauding Sather on this. Getting rid of Rosival is just pure win. Yes, he played “better” this year. But you simply don’t want to be spending $5M of cap space on a 3/4 defenseman. I dont care if Wolski never lives up to his potential – worse comes to worse you ship him our for a pack of pucks to a team that needs to add to its cap (if those still exist). Sather’s dumping of all these old horrible contracts is really giving me a lot less to complain about.

I liked Gomez

Boogaard, and Rozsival was good for most of his contract. Drury wasn’t a bad pickup just too much money, same with Redden. Regardless, Sather took care of most of those problems.

Joe as just players I would agree with you. Not every player is a good player and you sometime get good players at a not good price.

But I cant help look at the whole picture which include contract as well. How many opportunities were lost by having our hands tied by those contract?

i am no talking about the players themselves but the deals and saying too much money=bad deal

I think that had Gomez been paired with Gaborik

he would have been much more worth his contract than he was. Drury’s contract was a bad move, as was Redden’s. But Sather did the right thing with Redden, did an amazing thing with Gomez, and Brashear and Kotalik and Higgins.

Big picture, he’s been great. I think it’s when you look at the details where it looks worse.

Ehhh

Sather eventually did the write thing with Redden, but the deal still stands and Redden played horribly while we continued to shell him out big money for years. Sure Sather eventually made smart moves with Brashear, Kotalik and Higgins, but let’s not forget who signed them to horrible contracts the first place. Boogard seems to be the same case. Think of all that cap hits with those signings, and think of who is producing on our roster now (young guys coming up through the system). Spending that money more wisely on the open market really could have put this team over the top. And I think it’s hard to argue Drury’s contract was smart. I love Drury and what he does for the Rangers, but not for how much he’s being played to fill the “utility player” role. I’d love to keep him on next year, just for significantly less money.

But as for this move, it was great move. I don’t know how Maloney was convinced to make it; there were rumors Wolski might have had some problems with Tippet. Whatever it was, hopefully we get a defenseman that can run the point on the power play with the cap space, and make a nice run.

Why I like Wolski

1- Fantastic name… I mean c’mon.

2- Age and potential: 24 years old, has a lot of offense he can bring if he gets his confidence back. 1st round pick in 2004.

3- He has played both center and left wing, seems to have played a lot of LW with the ’Yotes.

4- He is capable of 50 points or more.

5- Did I mention his name?

6- Cap hit compared to Rozi… I for one will miss Rozi, I never got furious or impatient with him… he was paid too much for what he was but he was reliable. He is an RFA after next year, a 3.8 million cap hit… the Rangers really could have done worse.

Like most of Sather’s trades, he keeps it quiet, off the rumor mill, and BAM! – there it is out of the blue….

While there are almost certainly more trades in the discussion stages, or possible even more advanced, this one raises some interesting possibilities…..

1 – The Torts ‘rhetoric’ about building with youth may be more fact than fiction – not smoke and mirrors. They’ve traded the ‘old man’ of the blue-line for a left-wing (where they’re really quite weak). If no further trades are forthcoming, they’re comfortable enough with McDonagh, Sauer and Eminger that they felt they could take the risk, esp with DelZotto and Valentenko and Kundratek available in CT (Torts said: ‘he (McDonagh) can definitely skate in the NHL’ – and that was after a so-so outing against Dallas. He was better vs. St. Louis).

2 – Prospal may or may not come back. Remember – he played left wing or center. Perhaps they felt a need to get someone (with Frolov both MIA and now down for the count) who had the skills to be able to play with Gaborik. WW meets those same needs, probably has higher upside and is almost 10 years younger. If he meshes with the team and possibly Gaborik – you’ve added a decent amount of talent that could become part of that “young core”.

For the life of me I can’t fathom why PHX made this deal. Perhaps they needed to reduce payroll (as others have said, Rozi’s salary is much less than his cap hit) and this does that, while helping keep them above the cap minimum. As far as talent goes…..I just don’t see Rozi being a d-man that will help them through the long haul of the playoffs – if they get that far. In short, I guess I don’t get it – if I were on the other side I doubt that I would have made this trade based on talent and need – but as said above there may be factors that none of us are aware of……

Definitely helps with the scoring potential for the NYR, though – and that’s not a bad thing.

No Risk No Reward Deal IMO

Really we traded a solid but overpriced D man for a Frolov-esque player. I may be one of the few people sad to see him go, because his play as of late was phenomenal, but if Wojtek gets his game back its a high reward win for us. Froloaf was a bust, and hes a temporary replacement IMO. I’m pumped because my first game at the garden this year is gonna be seeing this guy in action.

by The Shiv on Jan 10, 2011 6:33 PM EST reply actions

Sorry to put a damper on all the enthusiasm...

I know most of you are rejoicing over the unloading of slow, plodding, aging Roszival, he of the bloated contract and all, but this deal is by no means a “slam dunk.”
I really don’t think Wolski is the type of player that will flourish in Tortorella’s system… obviously hope I’m wrong. I just cannot see how this guy can stay motivated. He’ll show flashes of brilliance one shift, then disappoint the next. He also has a tendency to hold onto the puck too long in an attempt to make the perfect play and think that’s eventually going to drive Torts berserk. He is pretty damned good in the shootout, though, I’ll give him that. He does have skills.
He played fairly well after his acquisition from Colorado and helped add a dimension to Phoenix’s offense that was previously lacking, but his star quickly faded. He just looked lost out there this year. Not quite sure what happened.
Having said all that, I hope the “change of scenery” gives him a kick in the ass and he can at least contribute offensively for the balance of this year, but I definitely can’t envision Wolski sticking around for the long-term.

by AZRangerFan on Jan 10, 2011 6:33 PM EST reply actions

yeah its not as cut and dry thats for sure but they will save 1.2 million next year off the cap and I hope WW can get motivated playing in front of big crowds every night.

agree – hope its a turnaround. The other thing is, Torts has gotten some maturity out of players – he did it with Dubinsky. Maybe this’ll work out, maybe it won’t.

by j-red on Jan 10, 2011 6:39 PM EST up reply actions

whew...

Finally somebody said it. Thanks AZ. Once again, I’m the odd man out on this board. Truth is, I did not hate Roszival as much as everyone else and will be sorry to see him go given our current line-up on the blue line. He’s played solid hockey for us this season and has been a consistent presence while we integrate our youth. For the life of me I can’t see why, other than the 1.2 mil on the cap (relatively small considering that we’re already under) this is a move that Sather made.

I’ll need to wait and see how things pan out but given the reports on Wolski, I’m not impressed and he better f**k’n work his **s off when he gets to New York or he will be in the coach’s and fan’s doghouse big time. These types of player’s don’t tend to last long around here…if he can’t stand the heat in Arizona what makes people think he’ll be able to last here?

Hopefully this is a temporary move…my bet is that the cap space is being cleared for an A+ d-man.

Gomez gets a raw deal

He was a point behind Jagr for the team scoring lead his first year (70 points) and tied for the team lead the second (58 points). Those numbers aren’t setting the league on fire, but in Tom Renney’s “Offense is Death” system, and without a winger to feed, those are decent numbers.

First and foremost great trade

Secondly i’d like to give myself a kick in the nuts for making that write up two months ago about possibly getting McCabe because i think our young D is perfect right now. (so please slats dont do that). I think adding MDZ and carrying 7 defensemen is the way to go right now. Platooning Eminger, McD, Mdz, and Gilroy would be fine IMO.
If Wolski can play with AA and Gabby then we could be in for a treat. I know he has skill but in my heart this feels like Enver lisin part two. With Prospal coming back (who knows when) this move is a warranted gamble because we are in a position to get some more scoring despite having 5 players in double digit goals. dubi – stepan – gaborik

wolski – aa – cally

feds – boyle – prust

avery – drury – mza

Then again, Torts doesn’t really use set lines. He uses players by situation. It all depends who we’re skating against and what the flow of the game is.

I worry about Wolski’s poor work ethic next to AA. We may need to play him with Boyle and Prust and let feds or Avery play with AA/Cally.

We should definitely keep him away from Gaborik or he will spoil Gabby’s game by trying to play like him.

Wolski

I’m a fan of the trade is nothing more than the irrational reason that I always loved that guy because Wolski is a badass lastname.

Very Pleased

My dad calls me on the phone and tells me the Rangers made a huge trade. He says in a depressed voice, “are you sitting down?” I’m thinking, “Shit! Sather’s finally cracked and gotten rid of some good youth.” Dad says, “. . .Rosival for Wolski. . .” I reply (on the outside): “No way! Not Rosival!” On the inside I’m like, “FINALLY!!!! YES!!!!”

Something is missing.

But which one of the young ranger defensemen can step in and fill Rosival’s main role of deflecting into his own net?

by smitty046 on Jan 10, 2011 9:07 PM EST reply actions

Staal can revert to doing that with his skate like he was so prone to do last season…

by Kritikal on Jan 10, 2011 10:29 PM EST up reply actions

this is exciting indeed, though rosi wasn’t having too terrible of a year

a young offensive talent, hopefully he can fit in with the young talent we already have

and did anyone see the espn power rankings???
they finally gave us some respect, bounced us up to the 7 spot, and put dubi as one of the players on the front page!!!

I listen to Enter Sandman before taking exams. I wear the exact same jersey every Giants game. The Rangers goal song goes off in my head when I achieve small successes in life.

love the trade. Hopefully McD can step up and stay with the big club for the rest of the year

by SaveByRicther on Jan 10, 2011 9:42 PM EST reply actions

I think this is more of an in-season tryout

If Wolski hits the ground running (hits the ice skating?) and scores somewhere like 6-10 goals and 10-15 assists before the dealine, Sather would be stupid not to keep him. If he doesn’t impress, I see no good reason why he wouldn’t be included in a deal for someone else.

by DJ Wuss on Jan 10, 2011 9:45 PM EST reply actions

the question is, if he flames out in new york how far does his value drop trying to trade him at the deadline?

personally i’m a fan of this kid, i’m excited to see him play tomorrow night

by joereiter on Jan 10, 2011 9:49 PM EST up reply actions

Thats one thing I would worry about also. But I think there would be plenty of teams who see a huge upside in him. He’d be a decent pickup for teams looking to unload a big contract. Those two reasons are most likely why he’s here now.

by DJ Wuss on Jan 10, 2011 9:54 PM EST up reply actions

Honestly I think this is a good move. I wont rag on Rozi cause I felt he was having his best season here (not point wise mind you) but solid on D. He made a mistake or two but nothing worth screaming at the TV for. But it’s nice to see his salary off our cap an on our other farm team the Coyotes. If Wolski doesn’t work out then so be it. He’s a less cap hit, and he’ll be cheaper to buy out. But Torts, IMO, has really reformed this team and some of the players. I think the Redden demotion was a wake up call for some guys and I think Torts can whip some sense into him and put him in his proper scoring place. I can’t wait to see him play tomorrow night, and neither can the front office/Torts/Rangers/fans.

by AveryGod on Jan 10, 2011 10:38 PM EST reply actions

Thought I would also add, in NHL 11, in the GM mode i dumped Redden off in Phx and got tons of prospects for him. Still have Rozi, traded Prospal back to TB and dumped White and Drury for Svatos. Thought that was interesting. But I had to create Stepan and for some reason Sanguinetti was on the Charlotte farm team for Carolina.

by AveryGod on Jan 10, 2011 11:59 PM EST up reply actions

Sather has alot of nerve....

….making this trade when I’m away from anything technological.

This gives us a very young D now, with old man Eminger leading the way. I agree with the speculation that the space is being cleared for a d-man, the question is what the cost will be for said D-man, beyond the cap hit.

I don’t see the downside though, if Wolski doesn’t fit, you Frolov his ass down to the 4th line when Callahan/EC comes back, or you flip him again at the deadline. If he does fit, you have yourselves a superb talent that solidifies your top 6.

I don’t hate Rozsival, but I have faith Sauer can step into his spot quite well. They are 8-3 w/o Rozsival in the lineup this year, and while I don’t normally put much faith in said stats, it is somewhat indicative of that fact they won’t miss him as much as you’d maybe thing, despite his better play.

Exactly

"I think a lot of people say you can't do it in New York, but I think New York will accept a hard-working team that's going through the process to become the best they can be, and be good for a while. That's my goal. To be good for a while. Not to sneak in, maybe win a round, and then you're done. That's not what it's all about."-John Tortorella

jackpot

For starters, his name is correctly pronounced:

“voytek volskeeee”

I’ve been following this dude since he got drafted. One of my fave players in the league who I think will thrive in NY. I mean come on now…he’s fkn polish!

Seriously though, since like nhl07 I’ve always traded wolski to the rangers. So much potential and upside. Finally a polak to follow on the rangers after all these years.

Btw, i feel like he might be able to work with AA and Gaby at some point (maybe together if they’re put on a line together).

Rozi was killer back in the Jagr days and his high point was def his game 3 OT winner that kept the Rangers alive. After the surgery he underwent 2 summers ago he hasn’t been the same. Sure he’s been fine this year, but nothing special.

Trading Rozi just shows you the depth we have on D. Who would have thought? Wolski was a guy that I felt would have to pryed away with draft picks…the fact that we got him for a 32yr old-pasthisprime-softie is an immediate W for slats.

Good luck to Rozi and WITAJ W NOWYM JORKU WOJTEK!!…OR welcome to new york vojtek hehe

i was waiting for you to pinch in. :) i once had a roomate named wojtek so i picked wolsky off waivers around mid-february because his name just popped. probably my best mid season pickup that year.

hopefully its that form he will return to under torts.
excited about this trade.

by #17ToTheRafters on Jan 11, 2011 3:15 AM EST up reply actions

C'mon this trade is great.

Yeah WW’s been inconsistent but he’s been good more recently than Frolov has and he’s younger and IMO has more upside. Good shootout specialist. Real good in the playoffs last year. I think Torts will be able to get his work ethic happening if that is an issue. We need guys like this, with this type of skill with the puck.

My question – how does this affect our D right now? Don’t we need a 7th D-man with the club in case one of our current 6 gets injured? Do we see MDZ this week back up? (I was sort of hoping he would stay down for awhile, he’s been fairly awful).

by Joe1969 on Jan 10, 2011 11:38 PM EST reply actions

MDZ is free to move back and forth, so they don’t have to bring him back to cover injuries, and if Sather is in fact banking cap space for a bigger move, it’s smarter to leave him down and carry as few as possible, unless he’s needed.

Shootout

Looking at these shootout goals by Wolski (even if some are from 2-3 years ago on colorado), they are really nice goals and its nice to have someone like that for the shootout, we haven’t been scoring that much in the last few games so hopefully another weapon on O will help, Rosi had been fine this year, Gilroy has been playing well imo

back to the 4th line for aves

by td- on Jan 11, 2011 1:04 AM EST reply actions

WW wont be used to our system I would be surprised if he stays on the top lines for most of the game I will think he will be put on 4th line minutes by the end of the night.

It seems Sather always goes for gambles. He will always go for the guy who isnt living up to potential in hopes that the guy will snap out of his rut. Normally doesnt work out but since this kid is young, has a smaller cap hit then what was traded, and can be flipped faster then rozy could this isnt a bad deal.

Besides if Wolsky just has to fill Frolov’s fourth line minutes there is not really much to worry about.

Maybe Drury is going to be our 7th Dman he doesnt play in the offensive zone anyway lets give him less ice to have to skate back from. (I am sort of kidding about this)

by Pballer505 on Jan 11, 2011 1:39 AM EST reply actions

These are the only guys you can receive when only giving away scraps, are guys aren’t living up to potential and only have upside.

by CrazyRangerFan on Jan 11, 2011 2:22 AM EST up reply actions

Is this thread larger than when Redden was sent down??? If so Id be very surprised

by CrazyRangerFan on Jan 11, 2011 2:22 AM EST reply actions

the redden move wasnt a huge surprise, this came out of left field

by nyrangerfan521 on Jan 11, 2011 2:25 AM EST up reply actions

This is true that giving scraps wont get stars but if WW is a complete bust we might have got a 3rd round pick for rozy that would be a chance to bring a kid into the system in order to develop within our system and concepts. Its a gamble lets see I dont mind rolling the dice with small pieces like this when it was rolling the dice with Redden and a huge contract that makes me uneasy. Frolovs 1 year and this really are just low risk gambles if we can look at them that way.

by Pballer505 on Jan 11, 2011 2:30 AM EST up reply actions

the risk will be well worth it if he sees how hard dubi, cally, boyle and prust work and he follows their lead. Z was the last guy that really hasnt put forth the effort. Frolov put forth the effort, he just isnt as talented as he once was

by nyrangerfan521 on Jan 11, 2011 2:34 AM EST up reply actions

Imagine if Wolski immediately clicks with Gabby, and he returns to his 60pt self from last season and Gabby starts scoring at a pace like the first half of last year? How beast would our team be lol

by CrazyRangerFan on Jan 11, 2011 2:41 AM EST up reply actions

the dude definitely has the talent to do that. i just watched a 5 min youtube video on his shootout goals. the guy just makes goalies look stupid. I know Dubi is now a LW but hed be the perfect guy to center Wolski and Gabby. He can do the dirty work in the corners and get those guys the puck with open space where they can do their magic

i heard a rumor that wolsky can win faceoffs. has anyone witnessed this?

by #17ToTheRafters on Jan 11, 2011 3:17 AM EST reply actions

I’m very excited about Wolksi. He gives the Rangers the size of a Jeff Carter, and unquestioned top-6 skill, both of which is what the Rangers sorely need. Whether Tortorella can get him to play hard is another question. If he can, then I believe the Rangers have a great shot at contesting the Flyers (who can roll out the Briere-Leino, Carter-Giroux, and Richards-van Riemsdyk lines) with a potential

Wolski- Stepan- Gaborik
Dubinsky- Anisimov- Callahan
Fedetenko- Boyle- Prust
Avery- Drury- Zuccarello

or some combination thereof when Callahan returns.

If Wolski doesn’t work out and performs to the tune of Higgins or Frolov, then he’s only on the hook for one more year. This at the very least gives the organization some breathing room as it decides on what to do with the LWs-in the wings: Grachev may or may not pan out; Kreider may or may not decide to sign; and Hagelin may or may not even be offered a contract.

In the end, I think this was a good move. Tortorella constantly says that he wants more skill (accomplished) and youth (accomplished) on the team. I’ve been an advocate of signing Tanguay, but Wolksi is younger, bigger, and could be a big piece of the Rangers core going on the next 3-4 years.

Rosival leaving allows the defensive core to grow together, again putting the Rangers in potential contention for the top of the Eastern Conference in the years to come.

It’s a great time to be a Rangers fan.
