Rangers News: Henrik Lundqvist And Marc Staal Named To All Star Team
Some good news on the Rangers front, Henrik Lundqvist and Marc Staal have been named to the 2011 NHL All Star team.
Rookie Derek Stepan was named to rookie skills competition team.
Brandon Dubinsky is an obvious omission here, and it's unfortunate because he's having a career season. Dubinsky's 36 points (16 goals and 20 assists) are just eight points of his career high 44 points, with just about half the season remaining. He is also only four goals away from tying his career high of 20. Still, no need to focus on this too much, there really wasn't anything Rangers fans could have done.
Still, you have to be happy for Lundqvist and Staal; both who are very deserving. For Lundqvist it's his second All Star Game appearance, and for Staal it's his first. Staal has participated in the "young guns" competition twice however.
Lundqvist is 18-12-3 with a 2.33 GAA and an eye-popping .923 SV%, this season. He's a very deserving choice at keeper for sure.
Staal has six goals and 11 assists for 17 points this season, and has been his normal rock on defense. It's nice to see him get some recognition for being one of the better young defenders in the league.
For Stepan it's a fine reward for a hell of a rookie season (half season?). Stepan has 12 goals (more than Ilya Kovalchuk) and 24 points (also more than Kovalchuk) and has been a fantastic addition to the Rangers this season. His 24 points is good for second on the team, and his 12 goals is also good for third on the team. Although Marian Gaborik has 11 goals, with 14 less games played.
Thoughts guys?

No real surprises here
Dubi’s having a career season, but i mean i dont really have any qualms other than fleury being an all star. that is some serious bull.
It's hard to say
I think Dubinsky is more worthy than Henrik if only because there are probably five more guys in the NHL deserving to start over Henrik, despite his great season. You can, however, say the same thing about Dubinsky. However, if someone like Claude Giroux or Mike Richards (who are both having similar seasons to Dubs) get in, then I’ll cry foul.
Huh
I take that back a little since it looks like Giroux is the ONLY Flyer going. Still, I can’t believe they decided against Pavelec.

If he's THAT good
Does that mean we can get anyone NOT on this all-star team for him?
Bottom line, Girardi should have gotten that spot, if the league insisted on having a Ranger defenseman, but I can’t believe they took anyone from our blueline.

Agreed
They’re usually in for offensive fireworks to try to excite people. It’s odd they would choose any player whose calling card is defense first.
Well
There’s some stronger defensive players who’ve put up better offensive numbers then Staal too. Something tells me there’s an off-season “Life on the Sod Farm” reality show in the works.

Other than the really good young guys like Doughty and Pietrangelo, probably. That’s an argument for age/cap hit more than total skill however.
I also disagree with your bottom line. In November, no question. Staal’s been tremendous for 2 months running now, and all of the underneath “advanced stats” favor Staal now. That’s not a knock on Girardi, who has an excellent season, but Staal’s the better player.

In the land of the blind...
My real bottom line was that we don’t have an All-Star defenseman. I was giving the nod to Girardi over Staal, but that was if I had to pick between the two.
Either way, Staal is on the team.

I mean…obviously I can make arguments for a bunch of players over Staal (again, Doughty is the glaring omission), so if your point is that neither represents one of the 12 best d-men, that’s fine, I won’t go crazy.
I personally am happy they rewarded one of them (i’d have been fine with Girardi), as they’ve represented one of the best shutdown tandems in the NHL over the last couple months.

That was pretty much my point – We don’t have one of the 12 best defensemen in the league any way you look at it. If you want to go by just this season, there’s guys I think deserved it more. If you want to go by a sort of overall value as a player thing, I still don’t think any of our D are in the top 12.
Regarding them as a “shut down pair” Staal and Girardi’s improved play over the past few months has coincided with Hank getting his game back. I still believe that Hank is our most valuable defenseman. With Hank on his game, we’re able to keep pucks out of the net, and our D looks better. The saves Hank makes on second chances are unreal. If our D was shutting down the other team, they wouldn’t be getting those chances to begin. They’d be frustrating offenses, teams would be able to set up or get anything going, and Hank wouldn’t be making those saves.
It’s a chicken and the egg kind of thing, and I’m not expecting to win you over with it, but I just thought I’d let you know what my line of thought was on it all.

I think you should know by now that I’m not measuring the quality of our D by the number of goals allowed, which is obviously linked to the goaltender.
I know it’s an argument that will continue on, but I would like to think that the recognition of Staal here might help open your eyes to the fact he’s an excellent defenseman, and the league recognizes him as such.

Buck—considering that you thought Del Zotto had a better year than Staal and would be the better player this season too, I guess that it’s not surprising that you still cannot admit you are completely wrong about Staal’s game.

I said MDZ had a better upside then Staal and brought something more important to the team
I still stand by that. I’ve also been pretty clear that I don’t think Torts is the guy who’s going to help MDZ fufill his potential. Maybe the “grounding” works, but having a guy who can show MDZ how to use the crazy talent he has seems like it would be a much bigger help then Torts telling him to dumb it down so he doesn’t get caught.

No Dubinsky is hard to understand
Leading his team in goals and assists, two way forward, has some grit in his game, has been the MVP of his team this season, and a leader on and off the ice.
I knew Stepan would make the rookie squad. He should be fun to watch in the skills competition.
Hank deserves the nod, he was snubbed way too many times early in his career in the All-Star game. Glad he is getting recognition as one of the top three goalies in the Eastern Conference. I’m off to see the rest of the list!

I agree
If they’re picking guys who are “fun to watch” he’d be a great pick. He plays hard, but has the element of skill he breaks out when he can, and I think that would make him a great fit, from that perspective. He also has the numbers to make the cut so far this season.

But it sucks if it was at the expense of a guy like Pavelec, who’s been really breaking out this season.
That having been said, I think Hank’s proved in the last few weeks he still is our top defenseman. The statline shows our defense keeping some big players off the board recently, but the highlights show what Hank had to do to win those games for us.

7th in the league in points. Henrik Zetterberg snubbed. Worst forward snub in my opinion. Why Ales Hemsky over Zetterberg? Edmonton already has the two rookies playing in the rookie skills competition. I’d be miffed if I was a Red Wings fan, I am a little grumpy as a hockey fan.

How Hemsky and Elias are in and Zetterberg is out is mind-bottling as Chazz Michael Michaels would say.
I understand Elias being there because there has to be a Devil- and none of their rookies deserve it more than any of the 12 rookies selected, but snubbing Zetterberg is just awful. If Hemsky is there then Hossa should be there and Zetterberg sure as hell should be there. [end rant]

It all comes down to the tried and true problem of getting someone in the All Star game from each team. To get Zetterberg on the team, what forward would you remove?

by Lunkwill Fook on Jan 11, 2011 12:53 PM EST up reply actions
Not every team has to be represented in the actual game. Several teams are only represented in the ‘rookies’ section (Florida, Islanders, and the Coyotes). Off the top of my head Kane has been injured most of the year, so has Hemsky. Zetterberg deserves it more than either of them. The Oilers already have Hall and Eberle going, they don’t need Hemsky going too.

Not that I would argue
Elias though has 30 points on a team that has only scored 74 goals all season (points on 40.5% of their goals). It’s a fairly impressive total for a terrible team.

i dont agree with that whole there has to be one player from every team represented. The all star game is about showcasing the best players in the league and does Patrick Elias fall into that? Not in my mind, now Zetterberg was a big snub but having a player representing a team that is the worst in the league over a player who is in the top ten in points is inexcusable to me…I think the fans take part of the blame but maybe the ballots should not be made up at the beginning of the season and should be made up in november/december where we have a better look at who the best teams are

Just saw something interesting
Ryan Whitney of the Oilers is +15. If someone should be an All Star for Edmonton, it’s the guy that logs 25 minutes of ice team and is +15 for that stinker of a team.
Whitney is amazing on the powerplay, he picks up a ton of assists on a team that has a rather modest offense. You are right he should have gotten the nod… but who would you take out? I don’t think Marc Staal’s game will be ‘exciting’ for an All-Star game, but that is just my opinion. Karlsson deserves it (second on Ottawa in points, sophomore year). Does anyone know of Wolski’s status for tonight? Playing Not Playing? Whats the deal?
Also, tonight is the expected Rangers debut of Wojtek Wolski. Even though Sean Avery has played well the past three games on Marian Gaborik’s left wing, I suspect Wolski will get a chance to skate with Gaborik and Artem Anisimov with Avery skating with Drury and, most likely, Kris Newbury. But we’ll see about the line combinations later on.
