What The Rozsival Trade Means For The Cap
When the Rangers traded Michal Rozsival for Wojtek Wolski, they took on a contract identical in length (one remaining year after this season), but at a $1.2 million discount. Using CapGeek’s daily tracker, the Rangers bank an extra $6,000 per day towards this year’s trade deadline (using the formula of salary / 186 day regular season). That is roughly an extra $288,000 the Rangers can use at the deadline on a pro-rated contract if they want to make a splash at the deadline (for more on banking space, refer to my post yesterday.
For the first time in a long time, the Rangers have the cap space to make a deal without having to send salary the other way. As of now, the Rangers can take on$10.3 million in full season cap space at the trade deadline. Sure, many are going to cringe at "what Glen Sather can do", but let’s actually think about this rationally for a second. Sather has been masterful with his trades, this one included, so what exactly are you fearing? Slats isn’t going to sacrifice the youth movement for someone who fills a hole. Slats will move spare parts or expendable prospects for someone that will fill that hole, perhaps that hole is a puck moving defenseman. Last I checked, the Panthers will be sellers. Last I checked, Bryan McCabe has an expiring contract too. I’m not saying anything here, I’m just speculating that he might be a good fit.
As for next year, it gives the Rangers an extra $1.2 million to work with under the summer cap (10% increase over the salary cap). This extra space is critical, because Wade Redden ($6.5 million) comes back for the summer cap. With Alex Frolov ($3 million), Vinny Prospal ($1.08 + bonuses), Ruslan Fedotenko ($1 million), and Steve Eminger ($1.125) set to become free agents, it leaves open roster spots for a big time center. Naturally, all rumors will point to Brad Richards here, and for good reason. He would be a good summer acquisition (he’s not coming at the deadline folks). Other big names this offseason will include Alex Semin and Andrei Markov (Markov would look great in blue). Extra cap space goes a long way in today’s game, and the Rangers actually have some room to spare.

Markov
Don’t want anything to do with him after all his injuries. But Tomas Kaberle would be nice and a similar player, as long as the rangers don’t overpay (never a safe bet with them)

Don't forget
Yao Ming and Bob Sanders. Ming has played only 5 games in the past 3 seasons. Sanders has missed more games than he’s played since he was drafted.

AGREED! We do not want Markov.
Not a big fan of Kaberle either. He’s an expensive tub of vanilla ice cream. If he can be had on the cheap (not any of our top prsopects) than ok, but to sedn away any of our top young guys for Kaberle would be Neil Smith-like. Stupid.
I don’t think a last minute addition or ‘rental’ veteran is out of the question for the Rangers this year. The Rozsival cap space and the money freed up with Frolov’s injury make that a real possibility.
I am not sure I want any part of Markov (his injuries make me nervous), and I think that Semin might not have much success outside of D.C. A lot of options have been opened up by this deal, we can expect Wolski to be here next year unless he is a profound bust (I don’t see that happening). He has a significant but reasonable cap hit.

I think McCabe makes sense. They need a PP desperately and are not getting it from their current players any time soon. They have team scoring here not individual (oy, Gaby). A consistent Pp will do wonders for them. July, 2011: Dubi ($4M?), Cally ($4M?), AA, Boyle, etc. Core players we need to re-sign automatically without the holdout dramas. Drury and Wolski (if he doesn’t work out) buyouts for Richards? Could be.
I gotta say, the idea of taking the ‘PP QB’ of one of the worst PPs ever (FLA’s at 8.8% right now) doesn’t exactly get me excited.

it’s not because of McCabe though. Put him on the Rangers and I think he helps tremendously. The Rangers are totally disorganized on the PP. Was at the game last night and it was worse live than on TV, lol. They always have more chances when they are shorthanded, lol.
You’re a #s guy: 5G, 15A, +8, 6 PP Pts, 80 SOG. We couldn’t use this when he’s doing it on a bad offensive team?
Not saying McCabe’s a bad player, but I would not expect him to come in and magically turn the PP into a juggernaut.
I believe the concept of PP QB is overrated though, so I’m not the best person to ask.

The Rangers won’t have a juggernaut PP this year no matter what they do, lol. But if they can get “something” out of their PP then they might make some noise this year. The concept of PP QB is overrated when you have someone that can somewhat do the task. The Rangers have no one. It’s awful. McCabe is a pro. May not do anything but for a 3rd rounder (?) might be worth the risk. I think they can make noise this year (win a round or 2).
The ‘PP QB’ has two functions…be a threat to shoot (to pull the defenders away from the net) and be able to pass to the guys in the dangerous areas for them to shoot. I don’t honestly believe we have no one that can fulfill those two functions.
I’m ok with being proven wrong on that statement if someone like McCabe comes in and we’re more effective. I’m also fine with McCabe coming in as a tutor for the younger kids, and hoping for the best.
However, I think the chances we could increase our production are just as easily tied to Gaborik having more than 24 PP shots as they are getting a defenseman with a more substantial PP record.

The Rangers point players on the PP are almost spastic in the way they direct the PP. Rozi was the perfect guy but he never shot. Why? Who knows why. He’s got a great shot (it was a mental thing I guess). How many times do the Rangers lose the puck in the offensive zone on the PP? A lot. How many times do they go 2 minutes without even producing a scoring chance? A lot. How many times do they take a penalty when they are on the PP? Too often. They need someone who has extensive experience doing this until the MDZs of the team mature and can do it them selves. They have Stepan on the PP point for God’s sakes. If that doesn’t tell you there’s no one on the team to do this then I don’t know what does.
How many times do they go 2 minutes without even producing a scoring chance?
Don’t have my script here…I can answer that though. It happens, but I don’t really think it’s significantly more than other teams.

I admit I don’t have those #s but watching the games, especially at home where I see about 25 of them, it seems like a lot of PP opportunities. you’re probably going to prove me wrong, lol.
I’m sure it’s a lot, like I said though, I’m not sure that all PPs don’t have a lot of such cases…league total is 18.2% right now, we’re at 16.1%.
If we had 3 more PP goals, we’re at average. I’d be just as likely to attribute the lack of those 3 goals to bad bounces as any other effect, incl. personnel failing.
Again, I’m fine with being in the minority (and probably wrong) on that, you’re obv not the only one clamoring for a PP QB. I think generating scoring chances from the forwards (who i’m certain are below average) is much more important than having a defenseman with experience.

to be honest I think that is there #1 need right now. I think the young D on the defensive side can hold their own as long as the forwards keep their end of the bargain and clog the neutral zone (the one thing that determines whether this team wins or not). When they let opponents run rampant in the neutral zone that’s when they get blown out as they can’t keep up (ah duh, lol). So I do not think that stay at home vet D is needed more than the PP QB, IMO. Although I keep hearing Phillips in Ottawa as a potential target.
I would agree that if they’re getting a vet D, an offensive one is more important.

how good has Eminger and Sauer been? and of course Staal and Girardi. and even Gilroy and McD have been fine. Pouliot’s goal was on Dubi if I recall. Dubi didn’t pick him up I think but I was sitting at the other end of the ice so I couldn’t see the whole play.
That goal is on wolski he glided to the bench for a change preventing dubi from hopping on and getting involved, torts sat him for a shift because of it.

George I agree 100%
The PP QB thing is overrated. Obviously having someone that is threatening with a slap shot back/defense there is good, so why not Gilroy, Marc Staal or Girardi. We don’t have a Chara or Pronger type of guy but IMO the aforementioned defense we do have can get the job done. That brings up my next question, have they been given a real chance?
depends if after they resign dubi sauer aa cali boyle ect if they feel they need an extra 3-4ish (whatever the savings is from drurys would be 7 mil cap hit) it would make sense then. the following year the number is manageable enough it becomes a realistic option imo.
In an Ideal world I would have all ten fingers on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
Its a nice change to have cap space
McCabe is a guy that came to my mind too. As with anything though, it all depends on the cost. I wouldn’t offer anything more than a 3rd round pick and EC which is probably not going to get the job done.
As for Markov, as good of a player he is, the guy cant stay healthy. The Rangers already have one guy made of glass im not sure they can afford to throw a big contract towards another guy of the same ilk.

No to Markov
He’s been very injury prone lately and he’s on the wrong side of 30. I wouldn’t wanna use the cap space just yet, we still have to re-sign Dubinsky, Callahan, Anisimov, Boyle, Gilroy and Sauer this offseason. All are due for a raise except for GIlroy I think, but if the Rangers want him back that’s also more room we need to save. I think we need all the cap space we can get, because this summer will be a busy one and you know how Sather likes to play hardball with the RFAs.

No to Semin this summer as well.
He’s a Kovalchuk disaster waiting to happen, disappears in big games, lazy back-checker, ‘enigmatic’…all that good stuff.
But...
he’s got a mean open palm slap!

hello !! were not getting mcabe.. hes to old 35 we need younger....
we have del zotto and gilroy, girardi and stall.. we dont need much.. except maybe someone with a big shot and presence on the powerplay…… like a pronger etc..
we dont need old.. but young no older than 31 years old guys come on….
In order to make a trade deadline deal, one would have to know what your weaknesses are at the deadline. That date is weeks away and there are many games to be played. It also does not make sense to make a move for a rental player if their is no belief that you can actually make it deep into the playoffs.
The Rosi deal sends a clear message that management is satisfied with the D they have on hand, and are more concerned with improving scoring than D. The Rangers currently sit at #6 in the NHL in GA/G. Talking about trading away the youth for D is obviously a foolish idea.
As of today, the areas of concern are scoring and PP. Not a single post truly tries to address this issue by looking at the forward position. On offense they sit at 12th in G/G and they were at 7 a week or 2 ago. That is the concern. Scoring. Period.
I hope eveyone keeps posting their trade ideas, because they NEVER come true. NOONE saw WW coming here from PHO. (everyone saw Rosi as tradeable)
Noreason to trade unless you have to. Injuroes forced Sather’s hand in making the recent trade. They may force his hand again. If they get healthy, there is no reason to deal.
Before yesterdays game, is there 1 person here who thought the Rangers would be 4 points out of the best record in the East? I think not, yet there are people looking to change the chemistry this young team has.
I say do nothing unless injuries dictate it.
i disagree, i think this team can make a deep playoff run if they acquire 1 or 2 key pieces. before the season i was opposed to trading for Richards but now i think he is just what the doctor ordered for this team. obviously it depends on what you have to give up to get him but if the Rangers can manage to acquire him with AA being the only NHL player thats shipped to dallas i think they should make it happen. Also, if they can get a veteran rental dman to QB the PP (Mccabe) on the cheap they should pull the trigger

I dont think we should give up any NHL players to make that happen, If AA or Stepan need to be included, just say NO. But if a package such as Gilroy, Grachev, other prospect, and a 1st I would do that, but AA and Stepan need to stay.

Rangers Fans Never Seem to Learn
Haven’t we learned anything from the past 20 years of terrible trades? When the best trade you have made is getting rid of Gomez, that is not something to hang your hat on. For once we should just stick with what we have since I highly doubt we shall win the cup this year. Unless we can rid ourselves of more cap space of course.
Actually the problem is signing FAs not the trades. Making a low-risk trade to get a rental like McCabe to increase the probability of making the playoffs and winning a round or 2 is not a bad thing. You’re talking about giving up draft picks other than a first rounder with such a deal which is fine.
how is the gomez trade something that we dont “hang our hat on”…for sather to move gomez and his contract and get back one of montreal’s top defensive prospects as well as making room to sign gaborik…that makes it one of the best trades this team has put together in a long time…I’m still surprised how Glen pulled that one off

It took them 30 years to implement the forward pass and 70 to mandate helmets thus making all hockey players who wear helmets and visors as well as goalies who wear masks and pads all wimpy cry babies
In Prust We Trust
What do you think about the Rangers acquiring McCabe plus Michael Frolik for Boyle, Christensen and a pick. We could put Prospal at a center position, replacing Boyle and have Callahan + Frolik replacing Weise and Zucc on the wings. McCabe could replace McDonagh on defense.
Dubinsky – Anisimov – Gaborik
Wolski – Stepan – Callahan
Fedotenko – Prospal – Frolik
Prust – Drury – Avery
Girardi – Staal
McCabe – Del Zotto
Eminger- Sauer
