Rangers Recap: Rangers Blank Canucks 1-0

When you play the best team in NHL, one that hasn't lost since the first week of December, you need to play almost perfect hockey.  Mission accomplished.

John Tortorella said before the game he told his team they couldn't win a 1-0 game against the Vancouver Canucks, and they went out and proved him wrong.

The Rangers played tremendous defense all night long, Henrik Lundqvist made thirty saves and picked up his sixth shutout of the season as the Rangers stifled the Canucks 1-0 tonight at Madison Square Garden.

The Rangers killed off an early penalty by Derek Stepan in the first period, and while they got the majority of the scoring chances, they were outshot 11-7. Rangers picked up the hitting in the latter half of the first, and drew a penalty late in the period.

The combination of Matt Gilroy on the point and newly acquired Wojtek Wolski really made an impact on the Rangers struggling power play tonight, the Blueshirts looked better on the man advantage than they have in weeks, and Wolski scored his first goal as a Ranger seven minutes into the second period to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead.

The Rangers had to kill off a 5 on 3 later in the period. With Marc Staal in the box, Chris Drury was called for an absurd delay of game penalty for trying to play the puck and having it deflect off his stick over the glass. It should be mentioned that Staal was in the box because he retaliated on Alexandre Burrows, who had speared him in the groins. Of course the sight-impaired officials missed the spearing and caught the retaliation. But the Rangers sucked it up, did what a mentally tough team does, and killed off the penalty.

At the other end of the ice, Cory Schneider was excellent for the Canucks, making thirty four saves, and kept Vancouver in the game until the very end.

Final Thoughts:

  • The Brian Boyle-Brandon Prust-Ruslan Fedotenko line was terrific all night long.
  • Marian Gaborik's bad luck continues, he missed on a breakaway in the third period. He just can't buy a goal right now, but it's not from lack of trying.
  • Henrik Lundqvist's 30th career shutout and sixth of the season.
  • I don't care how many times I have said this already this year, I hope I am still saying it in late spring......another big win in what is becoming a season full of them.
  • The Rangers have given up a total of six goals in their last five games.
  • Don't look now, but the Rangers are just 3 points out of second place, and 4 points out of first in the Atlantic Division, although somehow Philadelphia has three games at hand.
  • Welcome to New York Wojtek Wolski.

Too many good things to say about this game. Boyle was a man-possessed and Hank was lights-out. The Canucks haven’t lost in regulation since December 5th. Huge win, huge two points.

Gaborik and Wolski looked good together again, that is something to keep an eye on and watch how it develops. The Rangers were physical and the forecheck was working.

I think

it started with sending Redden down. That really sent a lesson to everyone that nobody gets a free ride here. A lot of you were calling for that last year and Torts didn’t hold the veterans responsible. This year, if you don’t play the system you are gone. period, no negotiation. gone.

I love it.

If the link doesn’t work, it’s on NHL.com, at the bottom of the page, Blackberry all-access pre-game show videos. BTW – We all had VERY low expectations going into this season, and understood it for what it was – a rebuilding year. Please don’t go NY on this team and create false and unreachable expectations after last nights win. Just enjoy the ride … and stay the course.

Stay the Course....

Amen. Say it again. Scream it from the rooftops and the subways.

If the power play continues to show incremental improvements over last nights effort (which was lightyears better than it’s been in weeks) there’s no real reason to muck with this team.
Especially when you’re getting Cally back in a few weeks…..

by GAThingy on Jan 13, 2011 10:04 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Vancouver played well, and this proves the Rangers can compete with anyone with the roster they have now, especially the D.

To all those who want to trade by the deadline for a vet D, I ask, why?

This season was supposed to be about improving through development of youth, not trade away pieces tp make a run.

Barring other injuries, I am quite happy to leave the team be and make no moves. They have a chance to win every night against anybody. And even through this stretch where the O has all but disappeared, they are still winning games.

Yeah!

by GAThingy on Jan 13, 2011 10:03 PM EST via mobile reply actions

totally agree

no reason for any type of trade or signing by the rangers. This team is legit. I know people are down on gabby now, but you just gotta believe if he keeps playing like he has lately he’ll come out of it. He is way too skilled to be down for this long. Wolski seems to add some creativity to that line which is what prospal brought last year.

Actually a trade i might do is getting rid of some of these depth forwards like a christensen, white, and boogard,. Maybe we can get some picks or something. I dunno who would want them but it doesn’t hurt to try.

by nutz_35 on Jan 13, 2011 10:11 PM EST up reply actions

Nobody wanted White for free when he was waived. he is in the AHL and gone at years end. no worry. With all the guys being called up, they actually need him to play there and take those spots on the roster.

Booger, LTIR. No one will trade for him, and frankley, i think management is content to keep him. LTIR opens up space for youth and playmakers.

EC will be needed. We have already seen the decimation due to injury. it is always better safe than sorry, especially making a playoff run, to have depth. It could be a deciding factor at times.

Just think, the team is playing well, winning, and not a single game with a full roster as intended at season’s start.

If Gabby can find his scoring touch playing with Voltron, (WW), oh baby!

For the Record

To all the fair-weather fans who continue to waiver and question, this team can win a cup THIS YEAR. If tonight doesn’t prove it, wake up and smell the zamboni! Any team that plays the way the Rangers did tonight are capable of beating ANYONE in a seven game series. I don’t care how good you are; when you play like the Rangers did in their own end tonight you will win games. Done and done.

Yes...

This is true. We’ve been constructing the precise type of team for this kind of win. And its playoff hockey all the way. I can’t STAND how people keep repeating over and over again how we can’t win the cup. Of course we can.

by voice22 on Jan 13, 2011 11:21 PM EST up reply actions

I really like this team, and my hatred of Tortorella from last year has dissipated with the job he’s done… but I don’t think the Rangers can beat a Philly or Vancouver 4 times in a 7 game series. Not until the power play and scoring become more consistent…

by Hoggo on Jan 14, 2011 12:30 AM EST up reply actions

and then again you remind yourself of how hank almost beat the caps in 7, withouth half the offensive support he would currently get in such a series…but i do agree that philly has a better chance of winning a 7 game series against the rangers. tampa, as well. its a matchup thing. couldn’t say the same about the pens, we own them.

by #17ToTheRafters on Jan 14, 2011 2:08 AM EST up reply actions

I don't think they can beat the Pens in 7 this year either.

I give this team 2 years. 2 years for everyone on the defense to become monsters. You see it took about 3 years for Staal and Girardi to become a shutdown pair. This year they’ve both been trying to augment their offensive prowess as well, and that should come to them in 2 years. If the Rangers keep Sauer, Gilroy (doubtful…) and Del Zotto, then their development on defense might progress as Staal/ Girardi have.

And 2 years for Anisimov and Stepan.

by Hoggo on Jan 14, 2011 3:19 AM EST up reply actions

i didn’t say they were favorites…

by voice22 on Jan 14, 2011 2:08 AM EST up reply actions

A huge component of winning a 7 game series is having home ice and the last change. The last two seasons home record against the Pens is a prime example. We might be able to beat Philly in 7, but not as the visitors.

I am just happy they play hard and look like a good team just about every night. Hank had a great comment after the game (not exact words but pretty close)
.
“I don’t feel the top teams are much better than any other teams they are just much more consistent” “we had a lot of tough games lately doesn’t matter who you play just when you play a team like this (Van) you know they are going to show up every night and play hard thats why they are up there (in the standings)” “but its not going to be any easier to play Montreal in Montreal in two days every nights its a big battle and its fun”

ive only missed like 3 games this year
that was the best game for me all season
we beat a good hockey team that was on a roll and the best in the NHL currently
we played hard we outworked them we played great defense our forecheck was great and even our powerplay looked better
welcome to NYC Volfman, I think this guy is going to be good for us, he can really pass and is a big body

but now I am getting f’n pissed off about the no calls
seriously its gone too far
first Avery gets dropped after he released the puck skates into their zone and gets dropped, last time I checked thats interference

then Ginger Staal gets f’n speared but the REF SEE"S THE RETALUATION? WTF
seriously this is wrong

Drury gets a ticky tacky call, I mean I get it he hit it over the boards in his zone but he just put his stick up and deflected it, he never controlled the puck

its time for the Rangers to call the NHL about this shit

Oh...

and it is clear the Marc Staal is coming into his own as one of the premier blue liners in the league. He has matured a LOT this year. His game has been physical, but in a focused very responsible way that demonstrates a level head. I used to question his decision about poke checking all the time…not so much any more. Now, its like he has a double whammy. Its a great balance. He knows when to use his stick, when to block the lane, when to use the body, when to press on the forecheck and when to stay at home. Every now and then he’ll just show up on a rush…coming in out of the blue to pitch in and its been a pretty rare occasion of late when it leads to a nasty counter attack by the opposition.

I also don’t see him getting beat on the outside as much…

Anybody else notice this? I hope he got a star tonight.

Dude…never ever quote a Puck Daddy commenter, bad juju there. We’re better than that on SBN! ;-)

Strictly speaking , the Burr thing is not a spear. happens in hockey, but its always bad form. Shoot, when you face off, the other guy has his stick between the legs.

Its not even the stick being there I had a problem with, and Burr is a fave player…

But it was the defined definite lifting of the stick while it was there. I know you are all jacked up and fighting for space. But come on buddy. Sorry about that fellows. He usually plays on the edge but not over too much. Sure the guys in the dressing room will give him a quiet WTF about it.

Well done on the game by the Rangers, though they are going to need to start scoring more sometimes. King Hank kept you guys going, and the shot blocking was great…well done by one and all.

You could tell the way Hank was jumping around at the end they were excited to beat a team that is currently #1. Canucks did not live up to that at times, but that was due to the hard work and buying in by one and all. You guys blocked 24 shots to our 12, and a lot of forwards in there.

Great win. I just doubt they can play like that and not be all in the training room when Torts asked who can play…fighting over the ice machine.

You don’t watch much, but 24 blocked shots for this team is a fairly common occurrence for this team. Of course, its also a big reason we’ve lost something like 140+ man games to injury, so maybe you’re right.

Sauer - quietly effective, ditto McDonagh.

I was fortunate enough to be at this game, and it was the best I’ve ever been to. The crowd was awesome all the way through.

I know everyone talks about about Stepan contending for the Calder trophy, but how about Sauer? I mean, he’ll never get it – something about the style of play he brings to the table doesn’t really stand out – but he’s so unbelievably effective and reliable.

And McDonagh made some brilliant, savvy plays as well.

These 6 defensemen are really bringing it and so many of forwards are brilliant on that side of the puck as well – and Hank is in the zone.

Average age on D is what 24 or 25 with no one over 27. They just shut out the best team in the league. Think what they’ll be like in another 2-3 years.

McD did get turned around and inside out a couple of times but he also made a few great stand up plays on guys and swat the puck away, very Staal-esque. He doesn’t really look that out of place and has been getting more involved in the play and transition game each time he plays. Thank you Gainey!

That was freakin great…I think the fans were pumped for this one because we were facing the best in the NHL and the streak and all that, but also, I think the fans wanted to show Wolski that he “wasn’t in Kansas anymore…” that this is the Garden, so no lazy primadona bullshit and enjoy the hell out of it. It seems like he did, and this is just the beginning…

yes jim, the season is full of them, and it feels so great to see that

this team goes hard every single game, and it shows

I listen to Enter Sandman before taking exams. I wear the exact same jersey every Giants game. The Rangers goal song goes off in my head when I achieve small successes in life.

Where’s Boyles star tonight this guy blocked more shots than Lundquist lol?

Another impressive stat!

Wojtek’s GWG puts us way over everyone else, with the 16th different player to record a game winning goal. If Eminger, McD, Drury and Feds could maybe net one, we’d have a legitimate shot at 20 players. Has anyone heard of such a rIdiculous stat? Now that’s team scoring, with everyone chipping in!

17th player with a GWG.

How about this one?

Every team member except Avery credited with a shot on goal. I’ve NEVER seen a box score like that.

Let me know how that works out for you . . .

I haven’t been that excited for a win since the Capitals series two years ago……..

Solid Effort

Man I got hammered at the bar watching the game tonight and what a great
performance. Came home and watched all my old highlight dvds for like 3 hours. I stood by this team since I was 7 and there finally starting to bleed that blue for the first time in a while. Make me believe!

I cried man tears tonight: Brian Boyle, you complete me.

Haven’t seen grit like that since the days of Graves roaming the wings.

Was it me or did the forecheck have a new wrinkle?

Seems like when the D were waiting behind the net to break out and the winger would swing back our forechecker would then attach the D behind the net at th same time the winger was there, entering from the side of the net the winger was exiting.

Looked VERY effective. They prevent the hand off to the winger who would have speed, even take the body on some occasion slowing them down then chasing the d out, forcing a bad pass as the other forechecker dropped down to take the pass away to the other D.

It’s a good, aggressive way of doing it. If the forward comes in to one side, it forces them to come out in that direction, and the guys in the neutral zone can swing over. George made a great comment on it last night to the effect of “the Rangers are trapping”.

Wasn’t me…that was either Jim or mleetch that picked up on it.

haha...

we do what we gotta go to win…so “trap” it is….
and we’ll get our scoring back….i mean we still have like 2 more goals than the Caps so far this season…it cant be too much longer before we break out the goal scoring again.

have to be careful

If the winger doesn’t take the puck, but the forchecker puts a body on him, then it’s interferance. (even if the zebras don’t call it). What they are doing is “hearding” the breakout to one side of the ice. I wish I was at the game to see it, but it depends on how the other team is breaking out of their zone, as well as how the other 4 rangers are positioned. It looked like (as best I can tell from the limited TV line of sight), that NY was overloading one side of the forcheck, then relying on the first man in to heard them to that strong side. Only works if the spacing between your D and forwards can remain tight. This tells me torts has faith in his D’s ability to skate well as slower D-men will have trouble adjusting and can get caught flat footed in the neutral zone.

by bleed'n blue on Jan 14, 2011 11:55 AM EST up reply actions

True, but it seemed more like taking space away…3 people behind the net is about 2 too many..so wasn’t really interference just not allowing space to gain speed.

Great adjustment from Torts and the guys.

But really the big story is this our defense; Sure they make mistakes but the upside and potential is ginormus. With MDZ, McIlrath, McD and Valtank in the mix and if they wind up where projected and I think we should have a very good blueline for a long time.

by Blueshirt in Paris on Jan 14, 2011 1:06 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, was this the first game they were doing it, or just the first time we noticed? It seemed very effective, and caught the nucks off guard a few times.

Boyle

looked slow to get up at the end of the game. Like to think it was from exhaustion, and not an injury. Was pretty hectic down that end for the last few minutes

Rangers FTW!

He had a long shift and was working his ass off. I think it was exhaustion, he was literally on his hands and knees trying to kill time and prevent the Canucks from playing the puck.
