Suspend Alex Burrows? Nuts To That, Says NHL

According to Steve Zipay, Alexandre Burrow's Pinata treatment of Marc Staal's groin does not warrant a suspension. I don't think this is going to come as a surprise to anyone, it's not like the Crown Jewels of Crosby got whacked or anything like that.

So instead of a suspension, a 1-0 win and hitting higher notes will have to be the best revenge for Marc Staal. Plus he can take comfort in the fact that he doesn't have to wear a "Free Willy" jersey to work.

Nothing to see here, move along. The NHL has spoken.

ATTENTION COLIN CAMPBELL!

You have dropped the ball. You know that non call is complete crap on what Alex Burrows did to Marc Staal and if that ever happened to your son on the Bruins or Sidney Crosby on the Penguins an automatic suspension would be warrented.

That was a dirty and disgusting play that should be kicked out and deserved a suspension of some sort. Marc Staal is not on his hands and knees for the hell of it trying to intentional slash Alex Burrows unless it was a deliberate stick foul by Alex Burrows.

Burrows is the classic whiner, dirty diver and a piece of crap hockey player that has loads of talent and doesn’t need to pull off these dirty deeds. Sean Avery maybe a pest, but he is not Matt Cooke, Burrows or any other dirty player with the intent to injure players.

Do your job Colin & suspend Alex Burrows.

I swear to god every guy in the audience and watching on tv went ooof as they saw that.

At least they had the decency to call it in the World Juniors when Erik Gundbranson was speared. God it hurts watching this, the NHL fucked up.

its beyond a suspension. if burrows had anything between his thighs he wouldnt be able to do that to another man.

It would have been nice to get a consolation prize for them missing a major penalty, but it seems even that is hoping for too much. Karma should bring us one hell of a long stretch where calls go our way and we get some iffy ones because against the Habs and Canucks the Rangers were getting the short end of the stick.

The Canuck fan on here last night saying its a natural reaction to lift your stick u when its between someone’s leg was completely wrong. Burrows lifts his stick up and into Staal on an angle, anyone who thinks it was not intentional isnt seeing the whole picture. Burrows is a dirty player and seems to always get away w/ it

Not really what I said my friend. I called it dirty, but only for the amount of up oomph put into it. Its not natural, but it does happen. Watching the replay, I don’t think it was intentional. It looked more like he was trying to get his stick ready for a pass from the corner, found his stick there, and lifted up a bit too much. It would have been a penalty if it was seen. I doubt it would have been a suspension even if…sorry guys…

Like I said then, an opponent’s stick is between your legs a fair amount in this game. In the corner, in front of the net, and even on face offs. What happened happens a fair amount, just usually goes unnoticed or ignored.

There is supposed to be a common respect. You are trusting the other guy to not do that on about half the face offs in the game.

He probably did not mean to do it, but it happened. I doubt it will again. The guy came out in the paper the next day and tried to explain it.

Not looking for a debate with you guys. I agree it is dirty. But its something that happens a fair amount. Thats why they wear cups!

So, he was trying to get his stick ready for a pass from the corner and lifted his stick? Unless he was anticipating a midair pass that he was going to bat out of the air and onto goal, lifting his stick would have left him unprepared to receive a pass.

Apparently he thought the puck would be in Staals shorts.
Put this slug in the Cooke- Sabban catagory.

even if it wasn’t intentional it should be reprimanded as is every other rule in the book, also your joking me that you think that it wasn’t intentional, its Alex Burrows known to cross the line from time to time, and always plays on the edge. He clearly hit Staal with force I mean the guy was still in pain after the penalty was over, a play like that is dangerous and inexcusable.

Why is anyone surprised? If it were Cindy’s onions like Jim (hope you’re feeling better BTW) said then it would have been a hefty suspension. Mickey mouse league with head puppetmaster Bettman leading the way. Just a complete joke. Fehr will straighten their asses out.

by Richter1994 on Jan 15, 2011 9:51 AM EST reply actions

There's obviously a difference....

and that is the fact that had it been Cindy, he would not have gotten up off the ice. He would have rolled around as if he’d just been run over by a truck, and they would have carried him off the ice.

That’s Marc Staal’s first “mistake” – and I admire him for not being an actor.

If it was Avery doing that , He’d be banished from the league!!! Total bullshit!!
In all my 50+ years of being a Ranger fan, the only thing that’s consistant is that the Rangers get the short end of the stick in calls probably 75% of the time. It’s just a fact, can’t do anything about it, just have to play through it.

by miatajay on Jan 15, 2011 11:37 AM EST reply actions

Typical response from the NHL. One would assume that the classless act is followed by the classless response from a fourth rate league. True to form and a way to teach sportsmanship to the kids.

by Rick 4 NYR on Jan 15, 2011 12:40 PM EST reply actions

Why are you guys surprised?

Campbell has made it known he is not a fan of the Rangers or for anyone who has ever played for them. It all started when Campbell proved he couldn’t coach NHL’ers and the Rangers fired him. When Cooke laid out Savard last year, Campbell was making comments about how Savard used to complain about non-calls when he was a Ranger, which had nothing to do with the fact that he had just gotten blindsided by a classless clown. Somehow that factored into the decision into not disciplining Cooke, in essence Campbell pretty much said thats how you shut someone up. Yes, if that were Avery he would have been thrown into Rehab again, or if Crosby or Ovie had taken a crotch shot that the player would at least get a 10 game suspension + fine. There are deficiencies in officiating at every level but the NHL is supposedly the model league that everyone is supposed to follow and they can’t even get it right time and time again. Eventually it will get to the point where players take matters into their own hands (not like they don’t already) but next time someone will either get seriously injured and/or killed. Don’t worry after Dubinsky breaks Subbans nose tonight he’ll get suspended for Racism or something crazy, they’ll have to make up something.

Newbury gets out there and makes the most of his opportunity and crushes Subban
