Around SBN: Stan Van Gundy Fired As Head Coach Of The Magic

Brandon Dubinsky out 3-4 weeks

In a news event completely out of left field, the New York Rangers have suffered a tremendous blow to their roster, losing leading scorer Brandon Dubinsky.  Per Kevin Allen's tweet:

Kevin Allen
Rangers leading scorer Brandon Dubinsky has a stress fracture in the fibula in his left leg. He'll be out three to four weeks.

No word yet on how it happened or who (if anyone) will be called up to replace him.

Updating...here's some various quotes around the twitterverse and Jesse Spector's blog update, that Dig Deep was nice enough to compile:

On how the injury happened:

"No one specific thing. He’s been complaining a little bit about soreness. We gave him a day off here and there. But there was no one specific thing. They looked at it yesterday and looked at it again today more closely, and it’s a stress fracture. … He’s been struggling through it for the past couple of weeks here."

On the mention of calling up someone like Chad Kolarik or Evgeny Grachev:

Tortorella: "This is our team. At this point, this is our team."

On the updated lines for tonight:

Reconfigured lines: Fedotenko-Boyle-Prust, Avery-Anisimov-Gaborik, Wolski-Stepan-Zuccarello, Drury-Newbury-Weise

As was pointed out, the timing is a bit fortuitous, at least as much as it can be losing your most versatile forward.  The all-star break is approaching, so if Dubinsky is back in 3 weeks, he'll miss a total of 9 games, with a possible return of Feb. 11th vs Atlanta.  If you tack on another week, it is only 11 games, with Feb 17th vs the Kings a possible return date.

The team will be getting Ryan Callahan back in approximately two weeks, and Christensen should not be far behind.  The team will likely stay the course right now, so don't expect a reactionary trade or any moves between now the all-star break.

Was just about to post this, my heart fell into my gut when I was putting it together. Thanks for be brave enough to deliver the bad news George. Huge loss, happened at a good time in retrospect with the All-Star break coming up, Dubi might not miss a lot of games. It would be nice if Dubinsky didn’t get injured at all but he will be out of the lineup for roughly 3-4 less games than he would be if there was no All-Star break. Tough, tough break for the Rangers.

Another winger injured.

OK

Now the Gaborik slump will officially become a critical problem.

If Gaborik starts scoring again, then hopefully he replaces Dubinksy’s production. Since Dubinsky was doing everything while Gaborik wasn’t, it might even out if Gaborik scores while Dubinsky CAN’T do anything.

Thankfully the All-Star break hits during his time, to lessen the “game injury time”

Wolski-Stepan-Zuccarello
Boyle-Anisimov-Gaborik
Avery-Drury-Prust

Pure speculation though.

When it rains, it pours. The only thing with timing, Dig Deep, is that we have 5 games in 7 nights against teams below us. We really need to take 4 out of 5 in these games, so I think even with the week off it is a bad time for an injury. he played 2 games after the slew-foot and didnt look any slower. i dont think that slew-foot would lead to a fracture, more of like an injured muscle or hyperextension if anything

Crosby had that high-ankle sprain/fracture from a slew-foot IIRC? It can happen if the skate gets caught in the ice and bends the wrong way, something will eventually give. Just speculating, unless something happened in practice?

Enough is enough...bring in Kolarik

Kolarik has 23 pts in 26 games since joining the Whale. I’m not gonna look it up, because, well, it’s the minors, but I’d bet that’s at least top two on Hartford over that span. Ahead of MZA and Weise and he’s a more balanced scorer than pass-first Newbury. Listed at center, but can play any forward position and is Mr. Hustle compared to Grachev. His +7 speaks to his maturity too when you’re talking about the AHL. Most importantly, get better Dubi.

Gilroy played wing in highschool and he is hardly a ‘young guy’ in terms of his actual age. He is a guy that has to do what the team asks of him to stay in the lineup. I don’t see the harm in giving it a try one game. I’d like to see Grachev get a look. Kolarik might deserve a look too. Its a tough situation for the club.

He’d been playing with it for awhile, playing through the pain, he had an MRI today (I think) and it revealed the stress fracture. He’s been playing in pain for some time. Tough guy.

Indeed
Torts explains that “there was no one specific thing” that led to injury & that Dubi has been complaining of pain for “a while”

You should lift some of these quotes for the story George.

On how the injury happened: "No one specific thing. He’s been complaining a little bit about soreness. We gave him a day off here and there. But there was no one specific thing. They looked at it yesterday and looked at it again today more closely, and it’s a stress fracture. … He’s been struggling through it for the past couple of weeks here."

Couple weeks? Tough, tough, tough kid.

good grief!

is it me or this happening frequently because our goon went down with the concussion? I hate to say it, but the Rangers, if they were going to make the playoffs need a goon/type player…:(

No need to start cliff-diving or playing with homemade fireworks.

It is going to be tough without him, no doubt, but this team has A LOT of character and we are getting some guys back soon. Will be a tough week or so before we get Callahan, luckily the All-Star Break is coming up to speed up the process on our injured bodies.

Of course not. they will realize the need to up their game and play accordingly (I hope)

Yo, what the F@#%!?

Seriously, what in the hell is going on? Gaborik, Callahan, Boogaard, Prospal, Frolov, Christensen… and now Dubinksy.

We must have set some sort of NHL record.

by King Cannon Fodder on Jan 19, 2011 5:40 PM EST reply actions

NO PANIC MOVES, PLEASE!!

Even with the bad news about Dubinsky and what with all of the other injuries, I’d hate to see a panic move by Sather to bring in an over the hill/over paid player to fill a void.

The bottom line is that even if the Rangers were completely healthy the roster is not nearly as deep as the best teams in the conference. If making a trade now means moving a draft pick or three or a solid future prospect it damages their future.

I’m a fan who wants to compete for the Cup. Getting beaten by a much deeper Philly, Pittsburgh or Washington team does nothing for me.

I say, let the chips fall and bring in some more of their home grown talent and see what you’ve got for the time being. Plus, now Drury needs to play like the guy who signed that huge contract a few years ago.

by FINEMESSNYR on Jan 19, 2011 5:57 PM EST reply actions

I think the Rosi trade was a panic move. They were being depleted on O and needed scoring help. Now, that trade looks genius, Wolski has scored a few, and what do you know, another F down. Imagine where they would be without him?

by GAThingy on Jan 19, 2011 6:40 PM EST up reply actions

If Gabby does not step up and start scoring golas…….trade his lazy butt before the trade deadline.
Seems like there are more Whale players on this team than ever before……and some part of me likes it…..let the kids play, time to see what they have to offer

by NYR94 on Jan 19, 2011 6:12 PM EST reply actions

Unfortunately there are no more prospects that can score on the Whale (save maybe Kolarik) They all reside on the Rangers active roster.

by GAThingy on Jan 19, 2011 6:41 PM EST up reply actions

Kolarik is now on the Rangers active roster. Grachev can still score for CT, and has been doing some scoring lately, and was actually hoping he would have gotten the call up. But they may have no choice anyway if FedEx’s injury is serious.

by LJR on Jan 19, 2011 9:10 PM EST up reply actions

Gabby's LOazy Butt

Gabby scored 4 goals tonight against Toronto and the Rangers won 7-0. So much for his lazy butt. For all you naysayers who want to trade Gabby, he found his scoring touch, as I knew he would. It’s too bad about Dubi, but the Rangers will pull together and overcome this injury just as they have all season. This team has heart and they will scrap until the last game of the season and hopefully deep into the playoffs. You read it here.

by snark38 on Jan 19, 2011 9:55 PM EST up reply actions

Time for a trade...how about Mike Fisher?

Solid center, can score, nice veteran presence. Ottowa is well out of the playoff hunt, and is an old team that would love to get younger. Maybe one young defenseman (Valentenko or McDonaugh?) and a young forward (Grachev?) would be enough to pry him loose. We’re stacked with youth, with a ton of players who will be ready in 1-3 years, so we can afford it.

Fedotenko. Ugh. The guy has played his heart out this year. Chad K: make us proud.

I do think this team needs to get more veteran depth up front

as much as I hate to lose a prospect or two in the process…

by feslenraster on Jan 20, 2011 10:10 AM EST reply actions

Their veteran depth is all coming back (except Prospal)…bringing in more players creates a serious log jam. They need to tread water for 5 games with the AHL kids on the 4th line, and then they’ll start to get players back to fill out the roster again.
