Would You Want Nabokov?

This is the current waiver order in the NHL, as of yesterday:

New Jersey
Edmonton
NY Islanders
Ottawa
Toronto
Calgary
Buffalo
Florida
Columbus
Los Angeles
San Jose
Carolina
Atlanta
St. Louis
Minnesota
Anaheim
Chicago
Phoenix
Colorado
NY Rangers
Montreal
Nashville
Washington
Tampa Bay
Boston
Pittsburgh
Dallas
Detroit
Philadelphia
Vancouver

(Left Wing Lock)

Nabokov, as you know, signed with Detroit for one year at $250,000.  That, for a goalie of his caliber is unbelievable.  However, Nabokov must pass through waivers.  I don't see a team passing up on him, especially at this price.

Now let me ask, if you had a chance as GM of the Rangers, knowing that we have Lundqvist and Biron, would you take Nabokov at this price?  It's a weird situation.  A star player for barely anything.  Imagine for a moment if this was Jagr, or another star player at this price.  Would you pick him up given the chance?

I see Nabokov getting picked up to one of the first teams who get the chance.  New Jersey to get a Brodeur replacement?  Edmonton to go over Khabby?  The Islanders?  Regardless, I don't see Nabokov as a Red Wing, but things can happen.

not really. Nabby would want to play everyday (rightfully)

and already we have a top-flight goalie. we need scorers, not another good goalie.

I wouldnt

I noe its a cheap flyer but I’ve never been a huge Nabby guy…always seems to come up small in april and may (three playoff failures with SJ in the last few seasons)…and I think that he’s past his prime as a goalie, there’s gotta be a reason (besides salary demands) that no one signed him in the offseason

Did..you even ask that question?

Ottawa would be my first bet. Their goaltending always sucks. Lot of other teams have established #1 guys. Chicago and maybe Washington would probably make a stab at him in hopes he could lead them on a long playoff run.

Tampa needs him the most.

by Caerid112 on Jan 21, 2011 2:09 PM EST reply actions

Tampa has Roli, I think its good enough for them now, the Isles might take a stab depending how long DP is out. Wash, Phi, or Chi might as well. I don’t see him getting to Detriot either.

by CrazyRangerFan on Jan 21, 2011 2:13 PM EST up reply actions

Roloson isn’t exactly a spring-chicken or a real answer. It was more of a desperation move because their goaltending is just THAT bad. Naby could be a good short-term answer and possibly longer term for them.

I don’t see why the Isles would bother since they’re already in firesale mode. Maybe Garth Snow wants to be a real douche?

I didn’t understand the Detroit thing….since it seems Howard is their guy, probably easier to just trade for a back-up since, with their record and that small contract, Holland has to know there is almost no chance of Naby getting to them. Color me surprised if he does.

Hell, if I was a team with a good goalie already, I’d try to claim him, then flip him for a draft pick.

Nobokov isn't that springy, or chicken-y for that matter

Disregard the Snow comment, I actually think that’d be a good idea; claim Naby, flip him for a pick. Unless there’s a rule against that?

by Caerid112 on Jan 21, 2011 2:33 PM EST up reply actions

Idk Nabby although he was really good with SJ, has never played great playoff hockey, and is getting older and its going to take a while for him to get up to steam so I don’t know how much value he is worth in a trade, but my guess is not much.

Teams that seriously will consider Nabby IMO

Ottawa, Columbus, Chicago, Washington, Tampa Bay.

Not unless he's incredibly short sighted

Neuvirth and Varly can both be very good #1s. Taking away even more time from them and sticking in Nabokov, who will only last a year or two anyway, would delay their growth even more. Either they sign Nabokov and a get a good goalie for 2 years, or they keep playing their young guys and get two great, valuable, and tradable goalies for the future.

I understand that they’re under pressure, but they should wait it out just a lil longer. And who’s to say that their current goalies couldn’t take them to a cup? Niemi and Leighton both made it to the finals last year.

Goaltending in the playoffs is all about who gets hot. Neuvirth has gotten hot every playoffs he’s been in since juniors, and Varly has too since his KHL/RSL days (save last year, which was good not great). Is Nabokov more likely to get hot? Push, if not lower. The advantage to Nabokov is that he doesn’t get hurt too often.

Just FYI, Caps have been using up lots of cap space because of IR. They’re pushing it tighter and tighter to say, get Brad Richards.

they already have a VERY solid top line center in Backstrom...

at least in my opinion…who is better than Richards….then again if they could convince Richards to accept the second line duties…then they’d be in good shape.

Yeah, I know. It’s all looking for a 2C. But given recent history, it seems like your 2C needs to be 1C-good.

Why would detroit bother? there has to be something in that contract that makes it unappealling for another team to claim him. otherwise I don’t really understand the point.

by jigblahdah on Jan 21, 2011 3:47 PM EST reply actions

I guess they're really just hoping?

Howard has been injured, Osgood is out for a while, MacDonald the former fishstick has been playing for them lately, and their AHL backup is hurt too.

To me, it’s like a too good an opportunity. Do you get him just because? Or, in this case, get him just so another team doesn’t? I mean, what if any team had the opportunity to get Jagr, like the example I posted, or Kovalchuk at that price, or a goalie, like Miller or Luongo at that price?

If Nabokov wouldn’t mind playing backup, why not?

Detroit wants Nabby because Howard injured his knee

Howard is hurt that is why Detroit is trying to grab Nabby for the time being. Id grab Nabby if we are given the chance to try and sell him off at the deadline for picks or players if not well a goalie of his caliber is never a bad thing to have around going into a playoff push especially if someone gets hurt. We have that money of course we should grab him and see what can be made out of it, its not like its a long term contract it disappears after the season.

by Pballer505 on Jan 22, 2011 12:41 AM EST reply actions

I think Nabokov is going for a one year deal worth 570k (huge bargain on a former Vezina winner). I think the other big issue is Osgood being injured all season long and them wanting a veteran available in their playoff push. It makes sense the more you look into it for Detroit, at first I just didn’t get it but now I kinda do. There are much, much worse ways to spend 570k of your salary cap. If Nabokov lands in Detroit it will make them a better team.

I’m waiting for a response from Nabokov or his agent to confirm that (I’m pretty sure his agent didn’t say that, it was just a report). Garth Snow said he didn’t hear that.

Yeah, it came up last night. My fault. But, wow, Nabokov is selfish. He’s getting a chance to prove himself to all NHL teams, and when he becomes a free agent next year, he’ll get what he wants.

it’s not like he’s never played in the nhl before. he has his whole career to “prove” himself. last offseason he didn’t get any offers to his liking, and he went to russia. playing for the isles proves nothing. he wanted a fat deal, didn’t get it, and left. only reason he signed with detroit is it’s a chance to win now.

he’s not being selfish, he’s being sensible. if he’s going to play for dirt cheap, might as well be for a contender. no reason for him to play on the island.

I think it might be a tactical move on his part. No reason to play for a franchise that may see his stats inflate in the negative sense, especially if he is trying to land a deal next year. It would only de-value him.

this whole saga pisses me off

I understand that Nabokov doesn’t have anything to prove (except maybe that he can lead a team to the CUP) but the waiver rule is in place for a good reason. It’s there to make sure teams don’t sign ringers in the middle/end of a season.

The Isles have every right to claim him and I really hope they suspend him for not reporting to the team. He insulted them tremendously. Nabokov is lucky to even have a second chance of competing in the NHL and right now he has no job.

Nabokov is a decent goalie but one who never led his team anywhere. He is NOT Hasek who carried a team and is a HOFamer and doesn’t deserve as much respect.

And what is up with Osgood’s response: “I haven’t put much thought into it, but the Islanders are terrible so I’m not sure why they did that.” as taken from ESPN.com at: http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/nhl/news/story?id=6048076

I know he played for the Isles but why is he even commenting on the situation. First, it’s in poor taste and the Isles may be terrible but they play hard. Second, Nabokov would take Osgood’s job. He should keep his mouth shut.

by truebluesince75 on Jan 24, 2011 4:43 PM EST up reply actions

osgood was misquoted lighthouse hockey (our fishstick brethren on SBN) had a great recap of the whole circus and it showed that the original quote was attributed to osgood when in fact it was just a random red wing that apparently yelled it out in the locker room

"Don't look now, but there's one too many people in this room and I think it's you." Groucho Marx
