Rangers Recap: Rangers Find a Way in Shootout Win over Thrashers

The Rangers got off to a quick start offensively in the first period. For a good two minutes, they forechecked very well and pinned the Thrashers in their own zone. Their best chance came off the rush when Chad Kolarik made a nice drop pass to Brian Boyle, which Ondrej Pavelec made a quick pad save on. That was the last of the Rangers' chances coming from the slot in that period, because Atlanta, from that point on, tightened up and kept the Blueshirts to the outside.

Nik Antropov put the Thrashers up 1-0 at 6:47 of the first by deflecting a Tobias Enstrom wrist shot through the legs of Henrik Lundqvist. The massive forward simply out-battled Steve Eminger in front to gain position, and then his great hands were put to use on the nifty deflection. Atlanta was able to maintain that lead going into the intermission.

New York gained some momentum early in the second by killing off the remainder of a Marc Staal delay of game penalty. They used that momentum to their advantage by finding the tying goal at 2:43 of the second. The play started with a smart pinch along the boards by defenseman Dan Girardi. That enabled Derek Stepan to gain possession down low, where he made a brilliant feed to Wojtek Wolski in the slot, which Wolski redirected up and over the shoulder of Pavelec.

Girardi was in the middle of a lot of the action in the second, as in addition to recording the assist, he also dropped the gloves with Andrew Ladd following a big hit on Marc Staal in the corner.  I love the fact that Dan wasted no time coming to the defense of his D partner there, and I also give credit to Ladd for agreeing to fight since he technically did not have to.

With only two minutes left in the second, Anthony Stewart regained the lead for the Thrashers. When crashing the net, Stewart was stuck by Bryan Little's wrister, but luckily for him the puck fell in a perfect position for him to quickly sweep the shot past Lundqvist.  This was just an unlucky play for Ryan McDonagh, because he followed the play well, but with the puck dying upon hitting Stewart, he was left in an awkward position to defend.

The Blueshirts were presented with a prime opportunity to tie the game midway through the third when they went on a 5 on 3 powerplay. However, they dropped the ball on that one, standing still and barely creating any scoring chances. At that point, I figured the game was over because there was no emotion shown on that powerplay at all. But Brian "Warrior" Boyle once again came through with a clutch goal late in the third to tie the game at two and send the two teams to overtime.

The extra period had a fast pace to it (there's your Sam Rosen reference) and saw chances on both ends of the rink. The goalies were great, though, and stopped all shots that were thrown their way. So, to a shootout we went.

Mats Zuccarello worked his magic again, slowing down right in front of the goaltender and then making a series of quick moves to put the puck to the back of the net. Lundqvist, meanwhile, made stops on Little, Antropov and Bergfors to secure the 3-2 victory.

Star-divide

I don't know how this team does it sometimes. They lost two more key players after the second period in Dan Girardi and Brandon Prust, but were still able to overcome adversity and find a way to win this game. To be honest, I think they took Atlanta by surprise late in that third period. They appeared depleted after the failed powerplay chance, but then all of a sudden turned it on and found that tying goal. It truly was a character win in Atlanta tonight, and two huge points were gained in the standings as a result.

Getting back to the injuries, Prust is undoubtedly dealing with an ankle problem right now as he was shaken up after blocking a Dustin Byfuglien blast in the first period. He played through it for a while, but obviously it got the best of him by the time the third period rolled around. And don't forget, he is also fighting through a shoulder injury as well, because I did notice some sort of shoulder brace on him in his postgame interview on Wednesday.

And then Dan Girardi was caught in the nose with a heavy fist by Andrew Ladd in their second stanza scrap. He went to the locker room to put bleeding in his nose to rest, but then returned and played a shift. He looked just fine to me, but then he never came out for the third, so there must've been an issue there that didn't affect him originally.

Losing either of these players would hurt the Rangers tremendously, especially with the list of guys already out of the lineup. The good thing is that they all have an All-Star break approaching, so hopefully they will use that time to heal up and be ready to go come February.

Update: Prust's x-rays came back negative while Girardi is day-to-day with a rib injury.

Focusing back on tonight's win, there were a couple standout performances that I think had a major impact on the tilt. First and foremost, Brian Boyle carried the club this evening. He was moving his legs and getting chances all night long, and then scored that magnificent tying goal. Boyle is now tied for the team lead in goals with 17.

Sean Avery was also very active offensively and was even leading all forwards in ice time following the second period. Avery always steps his game up a notch when playing with Marian Gaborik. It is an odd combination that you wouldn't necessarily expect to form chemistry, but hey, if it works.

Whale representatives Chad Kolarik, Brodie Dupont and Kris Newbury all played a solid game. Kolarik was all over the place and through two games has been very impressive Newbury picked up an assist on the Boyle goal and was distributing the puck well throughout the game. And Dupont was noticeable in his NHL debut, getting a couple shots on goal and battling hard along the boards and in the corners.

This team is relentless and that showed tonight. Like I said, I thought the game was over early in the third, but they took me by surprise yet again. The Rangers are now tied in points with the Canadiens, but the Habs have played one less game so they get sixth and the Rangers get seventh for the time being. The Blueshirts' next game will be on Monday against the Capitals in Washington.

dont like either move personally.

Grachev finally gets going…leave him there to play with confidence instead of throwing him in up here.

MDZ has not been fixed in eight games. he comes up and either sits if Girardi can go or goes right back down when Girardi can get back so you mess with his head again

by Michael Gleich on Jan 22, 2011 10:38 PM EST up reply actions

Agree…giving Grachev the “AHL treatment” that Weise, Dupont, and others have gotten is a mistake. He’s got a chance to be the man down there, and he might be figuring out how to do so.

That said…if they go with Kolarik-Boyle-Grachev, and leave Newbury-Drury-Dupont on the 4th, then EG will get enough minutes to make it worth it.

They prematurely called both up though, IMO

Not sure what choice they had…at least MDZ comes in with some experience at this level which is vital. EG I’m not impressed with but lets just hold down the defense and hope that we can produce some grinding goals.

This isn’t the Rangers anymore…its a test of our system and so far I’ve been impressed. Lets just hold on and claw into the playoffs. Everyone should be coming around by then.

They could’ve waited until Sunday or Monday to get a better idea of Prust/Girardi’s injuries, though I guess with CT not having a game until Tuesday it doesn’t really matter.

Wait a sec

Don’t they know more than we do about the injuries than we do? The call ups are an indication that both Prust and Girardi are going to sit out a game or two. Time to hunker down and grind out a couple of goals.

With no Whale game til Tuesday I think it makes sense to make the Call-Ups now, and let guys settle in with club. After all the talk of guys needing to “know the system” before the ’Canes game, it makes sense.

I agree, especially about Grachev. Why bring him up now? Let him develop and play with some fire and compete. If he comes up to play with the big club he better get at least 3rd line minutes. Playing him on the fourth line will be awful for him.

I got pretty upset when people were saying he was a bust and that he is done. The kid is 20 years old and we rushed him. I think we retarded his growth and are now bitching about why he seems scatterbrained and in flux.

let him develop the right way and play important minutes in Hartford. Who knows, maybe he will perform well on Monday but I am nervous about it, seems like we avoided doing it and went with Dupont instead and now we go Grachev because he pots the hat trick and because Prust might not be good to go.

Why would 1 or 2 games on the 4th line “be awful for him?” In Connecticut, he wouldn’t even be playing Monday or Tuesday. And he played 6 games on the 4th line earlier in the season, and has been more productive at CT since then than he was before the callup.

by LJR on Jan 23, 2011 11:49 AM EST up reply actions

Exactly.

Who is more important, Rangers or whalepack?

They have been calling up players as NECESSARY. Not to see how they would do.

Who exactly plays if prust and girardi can’t go? Its about the Rangers, not a single players deelopment. Besides if a call up destroys his psyche he is unsuited to be a professional player.

What could be better for a players confidence than the big club saying we are giving you a shot?

by GAThingy on Jan 23, 2011 3:21 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Exactly.

Kolarik saw fourth line time for a game or two, and he was quite noticable out there, so Torts moved him up with the Boyle/Prust line as reward for his good play.

Disagree

I don’t see how playing a couple of the games with the Rangers as an injury fill in will hurt his confidence, no matter how well or poorly he plays in those games. If anything, it reminds him of the potential rewards of keeping his head on straight. And the Ranger coaches might be able to provide some valuable coaching during practice. And it is a couple extra games of pro experience for him, given that CT doesn’t have another game for a few days anyway.

he was the same way in 1992, 1993, and 1994

let’s not forget (those of us who remember that far back, at least) that keenan loved his ‘potential’ but couldn’t stand him, and made quite a few threats to have him traded during the year

and there was also the seven minute shift game, where he left him on the ice as punishment but kovalev thought it was a reward for playing so well, and kept making the same mistakes that caused keenan to leave him on the ice in the first place

the infamous “shift heard round the world.” Kovalev was a great talent but utterly a stupid player. If he had any kind of hockey smarts he would have been a HOF. He had that much talent. His “take” on that shift tells you all you needed to know about his hockey smarts. Great point Joe.

by Richter1994 on Jan 23, 2011 11:38 AM EST up reply actions

I’ll never forget that game. Funny thing, he controlled the puck for all seven minutes but never took a shot or made a pass, just did a figure eight around the neutral zone playing keep away.

Kovalev had the best one timer a player never used. I could not for the life of me figure out why he just used wrist shots, wrist shots, wrist shots…always pausing two seconds before releasing to give an NHL goaltender the chance to set up. Guess he just wanted to play fair…

Its just weird (and at the same time, very satisfying) how they keep winning while losing players left and right…its like Jonestown in that locker room. But maybe after not getting hit by the injury bug the last few years and underperforming, things just seem different in that they get hammered by injuries and prove a lot of people wrong. That being said, I just hope they can hang on till the cavalry comes back…

by NastyNate82 on Jan 23, 2011 12:52 AM EST reply actions

Look at this way, we got two more games (imo, both winnable, especially the Florida game), and then Callahan comes back. And it sounds like after the initial 3-4 weeks diagnosis on Dubinsky that they hedged a bit, so I don’t think it’s out of the question that he’s back very soon after the break. Just grab a couple more points this week and limp into the break knowing that help is on the way.

Great effort by this gutsy club.

Grachev had his 1st pro hat-trick tonight so his confidence has to be as high as ever right now.

Best Case Scenerio: he gets solid minutes and plays very well, gets some points, and is returned to Hartford with even more confidence where he will dominate for the rest of the season. (He cant stay up for the rest of the season because hed have to play 4th line mins when the injured guys come back)

Worst Case Scenerio: he gets solid minutes but is invisible the whole time and is confidence is shatters as he returns to Hartford and is mediocre for the rest of the season

Don’t see how his confidence would be shattered by playing 1 or 2 game with the Rangers. If anything, his confidence would be more harmed if, despite how well he his playing, yet another teammate got an injury call up instead of him.

Just want to piggy-back on what’s been said which can’t be said enough times: Love this team and love the resiliency they bring to each and every game. Thank you “Big Deep” for mentioning the comment I love as well from Boyle after the game about Prust (“it’s an honor to play with Prust.”). Being a fan for 44 years there have not been too many Ranger teams to be really proud of over that span of years. Quite the opposite. Ranger teams were usually the butt end of jokes and jabs of how they never worked hard or never paid a price. “Fatcats” were a common term. Of course the Messier teams changed that temporarily. But having this young team that is developing together not only in terms of hockey skills but in the “team” concept is really a thrill for me and I love it. To take some of Boyle’s thunder who was a monster himself last night: “It’s a honor to be a Ranger fan.” I am really excited for this year and years to come.

Big Boop Bleep Doog Dig Durp.

No worries. ;)

What a great quote, huh? Shows how much our guys respect and care about each other. I couldn’t be more proud of the guys on this team and the way they play through adversity. Almost everyone that is under 26 years old is playing above their expected levels and progressing in terms of reaching their potential this year. It is wonderful to see.

This Ranger team is a fun bunch to watch. what an effort. That is big 2 points. Boyle was outstanding.

Bingo!

I like that line-up a lot. Drury will fill-in if we need someone to slow down the game.

by UnaC on Jan 23, 2011 9:41 AM EST up reply actions

Torts could roll 4 lines with that line up.

I seriously don’t see a spot for Drury, unless Torts wants to double shift centers to play with Gaborik (unlikely), to keep Drury for PK and occassional shift (Scratching Christensen). That would be a tough call, EC is enigmatic but he has talent an ability to randomly do something spectular such as in the Pittsburgh game, I don’t think we are good enough to sit a guy like that.

by Sather Sux Dolan SwallXws on Jan 23, 2011 10:22 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

I've tried and tried....

to constantly root for Drury but man does he make it tough!! Ever since we got him, I’ve told myself he’s not a huge goal scorer, but he’s clutch…but being clutch means doing SOMETHING…ANYTHING, to help the team win. I realize he’s a good PK guy and decent on faceoffs (let’s face it, the boys set that bar kind of low), but will he EVER score a goal?!?! At least Christensen brings something to the offense by helping get points in shootouts…Drury just seems to be taking up space…and I HATE to say that because I’ve always been a fan of his…but c’mon Dru…hit the net!

To think we got him in trade for Byers, who was pegged at being nothing more than an energy player/grinder, shows that Sather really can pull rabbits out of hats.

totally agree. I wanted Byers over BooBoo for the 4th line since the beginning of the year. $500K vs $1.6M AND Byers can score periodically. DUMB. DUMB. DUMB.

by Richter1994 on Jan 23, 2011 5:42 PM EST up reply actions

I was thinking the same thing up until the Byers trade. Why not have a kid in there, a tough kid like Byers (who can occasionally put a puck in the net) instead of Boogaard? Unfortunately, that ship had sailed.

total waste of cap space having a pure enforcer on the team. no reason for it. team toughness is more the need. what good is having an enforcer when they are nailed to the bench while the crap is going on the ice? the FA signings just don’t work for Sather. that’s why Richards scares me.

by Richter1994 on Jan 23, 2011 7:45 PM EST up reply actions

Boogaard is turning out to be the same story as Brashear. For Boogaard’s sake I hope he gets off the injury list and gets to play hockey again sometime soon, because he is getting brushed under the rug by nearly everyone.

Looking forward to the following pick-ups at the trade deadline

Dubinsky, Callahan, Prospal, Christensen maybe Boogaard.

These additions shouldn’t hurt the team chemistry and will give the team depth for the playoff run.

by SimpleManiac on Jan 23, 2011 10:57 PM EST up reply actions

great game

again I watched in disgust the first 2 periods
but we found a way to win
again a goalie was red hot against us, and we Pavilec has some great saves
I thought Kolarik looked pretty good, idk he just looks like he can play at the NHL level
Avery is playing his ass off
Boyle is a warrior, he should use a warrior stick, dude is a warrior
Girardi got his ass whooped, now I know why he didnt want to fight Carcilo
but I loved that he finally stood up
MZA is exactly what I hyped him up to be, the legend of the hobbit grows daily
Wolski has been exactly what I predicted, a scoring winger with great hands and a good feel for the game, always seems to be in the right place and has great hands

idk we just keep winning games, yeah we lose a couple in a row, but with all the injuries and shuffling of lines, now featuring a AHL 4th line, we continue to dig deep
the only loss where I was pissed of was Carolina, the Philly and Habs game we fought and did everything we could

but our PP sucks, why arent we moving? lets stay in the SAME spot, dont move around, lets just pass it back and forth in the same positions
5-3? more like 5-5
they need to sit down and take a look at how real teams get it done
watch some PP tape on other teams, see how they cycle and move around, and use sharp passing to create scoring chances? we do not do that, and if we want to succeed this season, we need to get more creative

but overall I like the general theory of putting more pucks on the net, nothing bad can happen when your peppering the goalie with shots, goalies give up goals, and cheap goals dont exist, a goal is a goal

right off the bat...

you couldnt have said it better….i was throughly disgusted with 2/3 of that game…and really not having a good time in the slightest in fact was quite miserable…

sure turned out to be a better night after that nice comeback and just absolute ownage of Frodo.

most games I am pissed off a good part usually the 1st 2 periods
at least we have heart and play hard in the 3rd tho

not sure i like grachev coming up especially after a big hat trick last night

but if torts puts him with boyle and whoever else we got that isnt drury or the 4th line…then maybe we could see more of him and maybe he could make more of an impact…but that is one too many maybes for my liking

I feel ya bro

Grachev is 20 years old, and people say he is a bust
guys the dude is 20 years old, he is a kid you gotta understand that at 20 years old he is still developing his game
I think Grachev is going to be very good down the road

I have a gut feeling Grachev plays well and makes a impact this time, especially if he is on the 3rd line
he has to be put with Boyle imo
I want to see a big line, but highly talented
Grachev Boyle Prust could become a future line that is a staple
Boyle is a big guy thats starting to become a great player, so you gotta give young players time
im not sure to what Grachev’s problems are, but Boyle had problems with skating right? so we developed that skill, we gave him help, a figure skater, and now Boyle is a smooth power skater
it takes time sometimes

Did anyone else notice that MSG screwed the pooch with the stars of the game?

They butchered Ondrej Pavelec’s name several times, spelling it “Andrei and Andrej Pavalec”. They really need to do their homework over there :P

They also showed Brian Boucher’s picture instead of Pavelec’s after the game, lol. Quality work from the MSG crew last night. They couldn’t hold the camera steady and didn’t know who the hell Pavelec was.

I noticed that too

WHAT was with the camera last night? The guy was consistently 20 feet behind the puck.

by SimpleManiac on Jan 23, 2011 11:01 PM EST up reply actions

The cameraman was probably drunk, that would account for the “lag” when following the puck :P

Sound was strange too

The ice-level mics were very loud. Every check into the boards sounded like someone banging on the door in my den and I distinctly heard a dropped stick hit the ice. Very awkward broadcast.

agreed...

i made a comment during the game that the goal horns sounded excessively loud…

naturally i just assumed it was to wake up the sleeping/non-existient atlanta fanbase…
