Late Game Heroics Help Rangers to 2-1 Shootout Win Over Capitals
Ranger fans, it is really time to start believing in this team, because at this point, it appears there is nothing they can't overcome.
The Rangers got a tying goal from Marian Gaborik late in the game, and Artem Anisimov put the Capitals to bed with a 2-1 shootout win at the Verizon Center in Washington tonight.
A very physical start to the game very few shots on goal in the early going. Overall a boring first period, only twelve shots combined, with the Rangers getting seven of them. The teams traded lousy power plays, or if you are "half full", great penalty kills.
Matt Hendricks got the Caps on the board early in the first, a nice tip in goal that got past Martin Biron. Rangers did a remarkable job in this game defensively, giving the Caps very few good opportunities, and cutting off shooting lanes. Rangers were very responsible defensively tonight, holding the Caps to just seventeen shots on goal in regulation.
Gaborik tied the game for the Rangers with a goal that deflected in off his hand. The play was reviewed, the goal was upheld, and this gritty team that refuses to get down on itself earned its way into overtime.
After a scoreless overtime, the game went to a shootout. After Biron stoned Alex Ovechkin, Wojtek Wolski got the Rangers on top with a beautiful move to beat Holtby, Hendricks then beat Biron to tie it, Mats Zuccarello stayed perfect to put the Rangers back ahead, but Nicklas Backstrom tied it again. After Brian Boyle had his attempt poke-checked away by Holtby, Biron stopped Marcus Johansson, which left it up to Artem Anisimov, who beat Holtby to give the Rangers another unbelievable win.
Final Thoughts:
- I can't say enough about the defense on this team, they were absolutely stifling tonight.
- Love seeing the Rangers win in Washington, which for my money is the most annoying arena in hockey.
- Had a short conversation on Twitter last night with mleetch and gmanuelian about Mike Sauer. Sauer won't get any Calder buzz, but I would hate to think where the Rangers would be without him.
- Martin Biron has quietly become one of the best free agent signings of the Sather era. For the most part, he has been steady as a rock. The Rangers are getting starting goaltending quality for backup goaltending money.
- Rangers are 17-9-1 on the road, don't overlook the importance of that for a team that if they make the playoffs probably does it without home ice advantage.

Put this together for the game thread but I slept through the game. Glad to hear we didn’t get any more banged up tonight.
About time we got an ugly, lucky goal.

Wish we had a real good close-up of Gaborik’s goal. Still wondering how that actually managed to go in. Avery and Boyle out there with him helped set it up too. I hope something like this gets Gaborik going. If he starts going to the front of the net, and attacking the tough areas on the ice, he’ll score more.
As you said, loved the D tonight. Staal, 29 minutes of kicking Ovechkin’s ass. Sauer had a few miscues (penalty, coughed up the puck once or twice) but was solid. McDonagh played a great game too, made some good plays defensively, what a terrific skater he is. MDZ didn’t shit the bed, so it’s a win-win for him.
Stepan/Zuke/Wolski continue to be a productive line. No goals, but they’re still creating chances and working on the fore-check. Zuke again with the shootout special. AA with a terrific move as well, he played a good game, nice to see him affecting the outcome.
Solid effort. Washington isn’t a very deep team, so we were able to handle them. Biron was just solid. Not flashy, didn’t have to make any huge saves, just steady, read the play well, terrific positioning (though he did make everyone piss their pants on that glove-save flop that trickled wide).
It’s games like this where you have to think Torts has gotten himself into the top 3 in contention for the Jack Adams.
totally agree with you on McD
the kid’s got an amazing amount of poise and vision having only played in a dozen or so games with the club. he really looks like he has a bright future ahead of him. the team itself is just remarkable. never say never with them. and the shootout moves had me chucklin with how pretty they were. helluva game, now lets win one more before the break tomorow night!

chris drury was the one player tonight, i felt, that looked completely out of sync and out of place with the team. and i know this has been going on for a while now but tonight to me was the worst i’ve seen him. i am by no means a dru basher, i love the guy, but it was very disheartening to me watchin him out there tonight. feel free to tell me i’m wrong if you see fit, i just calls em as i sees em

I think he looked better tonight then the last 2 games
He seemed to have a jump to his step tonight didnt lead to anything but the last two games he looked like a train wreck.
Tonight was the night
This will make my second post here, but I felt strongly enough about this to say the exact same thing. I have been a fan of him his whole career being from the same Conn. area myself, and was thrilled when the Rangers got him. For me, tonight is the night where the scales have been tipped to the other direction. He was awful. He did absolutely nothing. I kept thinking, "isn’t this a ‘Chris Drury’ moment, wouldn’t that be something." But no, the only impact he has on this franchise right now is in the salary cap. He is done; this team has passed him by, literally. “Promote” him to management, and get his numbers off the books.
why do i have this dreadful feeling that we’re the only team whose captain is finding himself on the fourth line? lol

Your right and that doesn’t even include the fact that he got passed over by everyone in ice time tonight, save Grachev and Kolarik. This is getting embarrassing having a captain who cant score and has a “different role”.

yea
To be honest I kinda feel bad for the guy. He as many said looks outta sync with the team night in and out. Tonight though he had a little fire early on the rushes and was skating but when he would carry the puck in hed lose it, even his soft dumps into the zone to gain it, it was quickly turned over. Idk but I think his awful play and the success of the team and him basically being an afterthought is getting in his head.

great victory
defense was indeed excellent tonight, staal has really developed nicely
and girardi wasnt in the lineup
yet another example of this team banding together to overcome the loss of a key player
think about it, we just beat the caps without lundqvist, girardi, dubinsky, and callahan
not to mention prospal, fedex, frolov, and the rest of our ridiculous injured list
amazing in the shootout yet again, the hobbit wields an amazing power in the shootout, wolski’s move was SICK, and anisimov’s goal was beautiful as well
one last point: biron was fantastic tonight, stopped some real good chances, especially from ovechkin (including the shootout)

If EC ever gets back in the lineup we will have three official shootout specialists. Not a bad thing to have, but not something I would have gone out of my way to get as a GM. Can’t deny that the extra points we are getting in shootouts this year have tasted great after what happened last year.

Let’s just keep in mind that the shootout scorers weren’t exactly up against an all-world keeper.
Holtby looked like he was shell-shocked – given the way he’d played in the actual game I expected him to be better in the shootout. It took till round 3 (Boyle) before he figured out that he was holding a stick.
Not taking away anything from Wolski (Goal-ski – lol!!) and Frodo – those moves probably would have beaten anyone.
Didn't show up on the stat sheet, but Gilroy was spectacular. Best player on the ice for the Rangers tonight, IMHO

I was pretty impressed with Grachev. He was ‘engaged’ – active on the forecheck and taking the body. He looked to be several steps quicker than he was in pre-season – maybe it’s his decision making that’s speeded up ?
Overall he was better (MUCH better) than I expected. If he continues to develop and show what he did last night, the “he’s a bust”ers will be eating their words.

Maybe Gaby finally gets it. He played a different game for him last night. He played a RANGERS’ game last night and the result was an “ugly” goal that is the epitome of this team and how they do whatever it takes to win. It cannot be understated: THESE LAST TWO WINS WERE HUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. Given the circumstances they were put in (injuries, call-ups, etc). Some of you fans are not that old and I know you appreciate this team but being a fan as long as I have this team ranks only behind the 1994 team as far as being a proud fan (and that’s over 44 years, lol). Just can’t say enough about them. Thank you God for giving us this team, lol. And this is only the beginning as the next few years will be even better. Going tonight and I can’t wait.

Rangers
This team works so hard. That what makes a win like that so rewarding. Interesting seeing Boyle with Gabby ? I hope they have enough left to beat Florida tonight. We need to be more consistent at home.
A fantastic win! The whole 3rd period i was saying come on just get one and maybe we can at least get a point out of this game. Than ot came and i said come on lets get to the shootout and steal 2 and thats what we did. This team just plays hard nose hockey and grinds it out. A working mans team! Hopefully we wont have a let down tonight as i will be attending the game.
A few quick thoughts
1. The defense was lights out last night. 17 shots against in regulation? Unbelievable.
2. It seems like this team likes being down 1 in the third so they have to push for the tying goal rather than sit back on a lead.
3. Zucs seems to use the same move but no goalie can stop it.
4. Drury is just awful, but if we lose him who will be our whipping boy?
5. Torts for the Jack Adams.
Manning lobs it, Burress alone, touchdown New York!
For the empty net, Mark Messier... do you believe it?! Do you believe it?! He said we will win game 6 - he has just picked up the hat trick!
4. Drury is just awful, but if we lose him who will be our whipping boy?
Well, there was Redden, then he went away
Then MDZ was feeling the wrath, and he went away.
During both, Rozsival got his fair share.
Now Drury.
I can say pretty confidently there will be someone. Eminger? Christensen? Somebody we trade for at the deadline? The possibilities are only bound by the NHL roster restrictions.

I’m not a huge Avery fan, but he’s gotten in the face of some of the Rangers most hated rivals. He used to score some big goals too. That’s very endearing to a live crowd.
by MyFavBaseballSquadron on Jan 25, 2011 1:10 PM EST up reply actions
Im not a big fan either. I respect what he does and when he is on his game he is extremelly effective. But we have not seen that much this year. He is cycling the puck good as of late. It just always amazed me how in the past he could have a game where he took two stupid penalties that would result in a power play goal or two against and then he would get a secondary assist on a meaningless goal and the place would erupt when his name was announced
by YouMe&Dupuis on Jan 25, 2011 1:17 PM EST up reply actions
Eh, I chalk that up to it’s one thing to go back and review the game on TV and in a blog and figure out what he did wrong versus living in the moment at the game while it’s being played.

most overlooked statistic:
Sean Avery is currently 3rd on the NYR in Assists, with 18.
3 behind Dubinsky, and 2 behind Girardi.
He’s been more consistent than people realize – but the contributions have been in A, not “G”.
I’m you or George has a place to find it, but how many of those have been Gaborik goal assists? Just curious, because it seems Avery’s has either been with Gaborik or on the 4th line. I know he got 3 with Gabby in the Islander game, 3? in Toronto…just wondering.
5 total vs. Toronto, 3 against Islanders, 2 in the 1st game against Buffalo. Bunch of singles for the rest. Interesting.
Avery's assists
Gaborik 6
Stepan 4
Boyle 3
Rozsival 2
Sauer 1
EC 1
Anisimov 1

The other side to that however is that he has a number of 4 or 5 game streaks where he doesn’t crack the scoresheet. And his outbursts seems to correlate with Gaborik’s big games.
I still think Avery can serve a purpose on the team. When everyone’s fully healthy though he’s probably best suited to a 4th line energy role that can play up on the top 3 lines when they need jolt. But his days as being the sparkplug on a rather moribund team full of past their prime vets are probably over. The younger shade the team has taken has ensured they play hard virtually every night.

The brilliance of Zuke’s move is that as a goalie, you’re pretty much taught on a breakaway to come out at the shooter, and try to back in at their speed. What Zuke does is back the goalie up, and then he slows down to almost a stop. When the goalie tries to stop and adjust, Zuke makes that quick move. In essence, it makes the goaltender make the first move, and that extra movement gives Zuke enough time to get it around him.
But what about the length of his stick? So much has been made about how he’s had to shorten his stick down. Does being shorter help with his SO prowess?
/ad nauseum observations and questions from commentators and interviewers.
by MyFavBaseballSquadron on Jan 25, 2011 11:12 AM EST up reply actions
I don’t know. Only observation I have is that when I played, I couldn’t handle the puck for shit, but I was more like Sauer and I played D, so I just went with the longest stick possible to increase my reach. I remember people saying a shorter stick makes it easier to handle the puck in smaller spaces. The surfaces in the European leagues are Olympic-sized, so you have a lot more room (and the games are less physical/grinding), so maybe the longer stick he had made more sense?
That’s all I have. And it does make sense that using a smaller stick (this post is just ripe pickings for bad sex jokes) gives you more maneuverability in tight spaces; less arm movement, and you can control the puck closer to your body.
Size of the stick don’t matter if you can scoregoals buddy:-)

I “accidentially” slipped and said “crosby, I mean OV, is really crying to the ref about that call” – then I almost got jumped by the drunks behind me. Seriously though, the Rangers bought into the defensive system tonight. No odd man rushes for the Caps, always three guys back and keep the forcheck cycle going. It was boring for the fans, but effective hockey given our injuries. They kept the game simple and didn’t let the caps have speed through the neutral zone. I love how the jumbotron kept pumping out the “unleash the fury” video during every TV timeout in the 3rd period, but the Rangers kept smothering them on D. Another great game for Stall, by the way …

Chris Drury is trying wayyy too hard
I don’t think he’s used to the 4th line role that he’s earned. He’s still used to being 1st PK/1st PP plus 2nd line minutes. He’s shooting & passing everything as hard as he can b/c I think he’s trying to make the most out of his situation. He does play hard, but it seems that he’s not taking his time when necessary. Being on the bench gets you only more amped up when you actually get onto the ice. He’ll come around b/c he’s a great hockey player.
All I can say about this team...
Is that I’m currently in the Middle East and I wake up at 3am to watch every game online…I don’t care if I get sleep or not, I want to watch these guys play!! LOVE the work ethic, ugly wins, lucky bounces, blocked shots…all of it! To paraphrase Herb Brooks, “We dont have enough talent to win on talent alone” but I’ll take every hard working bad bounce goal we can get to see Zucc and the boys pull it out in the shootouts!

what he said about what they said
"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
When healthy

Feds-Boyle-Prust
Its like we’d have line 1a, 1b, 1c and a 3rd line. Could Torts actually just roll four lines consistently? Possibly upgrades to play with Gabby would be great but I’d love to see this line up. Bye bye (or buy out) Mr. Drury.
Manning lobs it, Burress alone, touchdown New York!
For the empty net, Mark Messier... do you believe it?! Do you believe it?! He said we will win game 6 - he has just picked up the hat trick!
Damnnnnnn
If Prospal comes back in game shape, sub him in for EC… The depth we have now is unbelievable (if everyone gets healthy), only team I can think of that competes depth-wise is Philly.
Boyle looked good on Gaborik’s line last night, I think I want to see it again against Florida, but with Torts, you never know. I think he borrowed Colin Campbell’s Wheel of Justice and replaced the entries with player’s name to determine who goes out on the ice for each shift lol
love it. i hope torts can roll all 4 consistently.

Love it on VS
Let’s me see the game in HD.
So cheap that Dolan, because he owns the Rangers, can hoard the HD broadcasts for his own company for competitive advantage over other cable companies. Guess that’s all he’s got left – Cablevision sucks ass.
Let me know how that works out for you . . .
any chance zukes' move runs its course after a while?
teams are gonna start to pick up on this sooner or later
Ron Dugay for President
i think
its gonna be a chess match…once goalies catch up to zuke slowing down on the approach and they are set for that, he’s gonna start speeding up and then goalies will adjust to that and on and on

Yeah, I agree, goalies will catch on to what he does and adjust for it. If you watch Lundqvist, he doesn’t really challenge much, so I don’t see a move like Zuke’s being that succesful because Lundqvist will-not-move. Goalies might not come out as much
I think you’ll finally see a goalie stop it once, maybe twice, then Zuke will change things up. Not tremendously, because you want to make goalies think you’re doing the same move, but maybe he’ll try to roof a backhander instead of cutting around the goalie. Or he could just slow up and then rip a shot off hoping the goalie expects a deke.
Chess match is a good analogy though.
Spin-o-Rama??
Too bush league?

its the shootout
i dont think there should be anything short of attacking the goalie that should be considered bush league

Remember
If they don’t cover the backhand move, he can shoot instead of bringing it back to the forehand.
The goalie ended up on his knees outside the blue paint. THAT is a powerful move.

and one more thing about dru...
if theres anything to look at as “admirable” or whatever word you wanna use about his demotion is the fact that he has not come out and complained about where he is situated now. i remember last year when wade redden, half of my Rest and Relaxation duo, whined to msg about being scratched. drury hasnt done that yet soo its nice to see that
Ron Dugay for President
still, i dont think any captain would take lightly to getting 4th line minutes while the young guns who havent been up for too long are getting more ice time than him

The Caps were able to relegate Chris Clark down to the lower lines and eventually out the door.

Marc Staal had an incredible game last night; the highlight of the game for me happened in the third period with Ovechkin rushing down the wing on Staal. Staal swept the puck away from OV into the corner and then flattened him with a vicious left shoulder hit. One of my favorite plays of the season so far from Mr. Staal. There’s maybe 10 guys on the planet who could’ve done what he did to Ovechkin; glad he’s on our team.
He played over 29 minutes last night too….that’s a pretty good first-rounder right there.
Prole art threat.
oooooh yeah :)
