Numerous reports on Twitter that Alex Frolov is done for the year after suffering a torn ACL last night against the St. Louis Blues.
As you saw in our previous story, Kris Newbury has already been recalled from Connecticut.

Neither was Frolov. I’ll take a rookie with enthusiasm over a whiny slacker.

Newbury’s not exactly a rookie, he’s an AHL lifer who has done nothing in his limited NHL action. He might play with energy, but he’s very likely a zero offensively.

I wouldn’t call Frolov a whiney slacker either. He played hard and didn’t complain as far as i know. He will be missed because we really don’t have anyone to take his place right now.

Not sure its a bad thing
if Frolov and Cally are close as it seems, we’ll have them back by next week. We got 3 games I’d think to cover.
I mean its not like Frolov has been an extremely important player anyway. Maybe its addition by subtraction and he can’t do stupid things with the puck anymore
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
you mean prospal and cally i assume?
and yes i agree….we’ll have newbury up for a few games…but this almost makes it easier for us when we have to send some people down when they get healthy again.

well i feel like an idiot
this story didnt come up for me when the page loaded, so I posted the fanpost….my apologies
lol is this real?
Froloaf is a piece of garbage hockey player anyway
goodbye Froloaf, I will miss your wraparounds
cant we go out and get a better winger than Newbury?
Ok, I’m no Frolov fan either, but lets not kick the dog while he’s down. Wish him the best, and we move on.

Ahhhh...
I would bet you are a young man Chia. Karma is a mother-fucker. Watch out. Just make sure you live your life to the best of your abilities and in the meantime, there is no need to run around damning, cursing and hating people you don’t know. Its a quick rush with a loooong shelf-life.
I wish Frolov the best in his recovery.
calm down
Chia obviously doesn’t like him as a hockey player. No ill words towards health or recovery. Maybe you should check the definition of karma, if bad things happen to everyone who has a few choice words about their hockey skills and wraparounds, the whole world would be in trouble. I feel the same way as chia, frolov complained and didn’t produce not much more to say. I do hope he recovers fast and well so he can play for another team next year.

This could screw up his career too. Knee injuries kill. Oh well, we are still a deep team without him and he wasn’t playing that well to begin with. I hope he recovers.

torn ACL = 3=4 months
surgery’s come a long way for repairs, they’ll probably need to wait a week or so for swelling to go down before operating
i mean, theoretically, he COULD be back for a late playoff run, maybe to score on a fraparound in overtime

whoa i take it back
ACL MCL meniscus…..yeah he’s not coming back ’til the fall, and most likely in the KHL

yikes that might be his career, if not definitely his NHL career. I feel bad for him although his game fell off of the earth this season, he seemed like a nice guy. No matter how good or bad someone is at the sport it still sucks not being able to play it anymore, even if you a 45 year old beer league player. So this really sucks for him, I wish him the best of luck.

Easier Decision
I feel bad for the guy, and it’s certainly a blow. But in the long run, it makes the decision-making process that much easier when everyone is healthy. Weise will be sent back as soon as someone is healthy. But after that, I would have hated to see Zuccarello sent back down after the next healthy return. Weise & Newbury leave when Callahan and Christensen are ready. I still have little faith in Prospal’s healing ability, but I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

How does this affect the cap? Does the remainder of his salary come off if they put him on LTIR? could be useful if they want to acquire somebody at the deadline
not so sure. i still think he stays on the cap, just that now we can go over the cap by 3m. And yes, there is a difference between the two, because now we arent accumuluting extra cap space by the day for that 3m that would eventually allow us to add prob an extra 1.5m in salary at the deadline. But i may be wrong. Correct me if i am.
by Ahmad Bradshaw on Jan 9, 2011 8:29 PM EST up reply actions
We can’t go over by $3m, we can go over by the prorated portion of Frolov’s cap hit, based on how many days are left in the season.

that sux
too bad for him but he didnt fit well and wasnt producing.. hes too slow. it reallly sucks bc now we cant trade him hes worthless. whos gonna want him.. no improvement..
we need scoring hello??? why newbury and weise????
I WANNA SEE WILLIAMS AND KOLARIK.. ?? ITS LIKE PARENTEU.. NEVER SEE GOOD YOUNG PLAYERS………. THEN WHEN THEY PLAY WELL FOR US WE TRADE THEM????
DONT AGREE WE SHOULD OF HAVE NEWBURY WHEN.. BOOGY WENT DOWN.. I WANNA SEE SOME TALENT WITH DRURY .. POOR HIM HES LEFT IN TORTS DOGHOUSE.!@!! BRING IN KOLARIK AND WILLIAMS WITH DRURY THEN WE CAN ADD SOME SCORING. PLUS THERE PLUS – IS POSITIVE AND NEWBURY AND WEISE ARENT!! GO FIGURE THESE MOVES..
easy on the high octane buddy
There’s always more than one reason behind these moves. U can’t rush a couple of kids if they aren’t ready. They called up newbury to fill the line up out till we get callahan back. Would it be nice to have more scoring? Yes, but the ahl is running thin and most of our talent is not ready for that promotion

you know id say this is a big blow
We bring him in to keep some of the attention of gabby. Even though he wasn’t producing like he should, lately, the last month or so id say fro has been skating and not hurting the team one bit.
Even though he hasn’t been the player we expected, you can be sure that having a veteran presence like him helped the kids out and was still a threat for the opponents who scout the rangers come gametime.
From a non hockey standpoint, its a horrible injry and one that can take up to a year to recover from. I partially tore my acl january2010 and it sucks a lot. No surgery for me cuz its 50/50. Either stregthen your leg muscles and deal with the sharp pain or get acl surgery and rehab for up to a year. Good luck fro, maybe a miracle happens and you come back game 1 of the conference finals and score in OT!
by polishBLUE on Jan 10, 2011 1:35 AM EST via mobile reply actions
I wish him good luck on his soon to be surgery, but I have to say he really didn’t fit here at all. It’s a shame really. He had some pretty good seasons in LA. But we move on and hope Newbury does a good job.

Matt Moulsen is rumoured to be on the block on LI as I believe Snow is clearing out all restricted and pending free agents and collecting draft picks/prospects
He would be an interesting fit
Meh
I think Moulson is an overrated guy who’s benefited immensely by the lack of talent on the Islanders. On most clubs, he doesn’t receive anywhere near top line minutes like he has for Garth Snow’s rookie symposium. I had the pleasure of watching him in college and he was good in the ECAC, not great. He should be an alright back end guy, but he’s already overpaid.
On the bright side
He sure did have a mean raparound

wow. is it me, or the Rangers getting really banged up?
….maybe its just my imagination… I am glad everyone is stepping up since our players are dropping like flies, but just wow. another guy hurt. I doubt the Isles will trade us Moulsen.

What Happens to Frolov's Remaining Cap Space
With a $3 million a year contract, do the Rangers get $1.5 million of cap relief (1/2 a season) for the remainder of this year to go and sign another player?
They’re allowed to go over the cap by the amount of his prorated deal. Per capgeek, at the deadline they can add a player with a $8.8m cap hit at the deadline. Whether they should or not is another debate. (I vote no unless it’s an expiring deal)

As much as we deride the play of Frolov
He still went out there, put some offensive pressure on (even if he couldn’t finish) and kept the other side from scoring. That in and of itself is valuable and we’re not going to easily replace that with an AHL lifer. At this point, Frolov was an NHL-caliber depth player, something we’re starting to run out of.
Just wishful thinking
I’d love to see him.

i don't think he can be recalled at this point
he can go to hartford after his juniors year ends but that’s it

Right, I don’t think he’s signed a pro contract yet. But after seeing his smarts and hustle in the WJC, I’ll go out on a limb and say he’s ready for prime time.

This seriously hurts the rangers depth. While
frolov wasn’t producing at the level we would have hoped, he is a competent NHL caliber player who can log top 6 minutes without being a detriment. Gotta commend Torts for keeping this team afloat with all the injuries so far.
I was hoping we couldve dished Frolov for a pick at the deadline but looks like that’s not happening. I suspect he is KHL bound come next season given that this contract seemed like a last chance for him.

Alex Frolov is done for the year =...
WHO CARES… Fill his spot with anybody in Hartford and it will suffice. As already pointed out, this is a prime opportunity for a few youngsters. Hopefully one of them shines otherwise we’ll muddle through until the injury bug heals.
I care...
I think you are letting emotionalism get the better of you here. As many have noted already, he might not have been living up to expectations, but he was a huge part of the overall balance of the club. There is no way that anyone left in Hartford is ready to fill his shoes. No way.
Exactly
Frolov is a NHL caliber player and no one from the Whale can fill those shoes.
Bringing up Newbury makes sense. Better have a 28 years old AHL veteran to play 5 mins a game than a young guy who will play 20 down in Connecticut. The other option besides Newbury would have been White but I guess the Rangers have closed that chapter.
Plus White would be exposed to reentry waivers and someone might take a shot at him regaining his previous scoring touch while we pay half his salary.

Oh boy
I was worried with how he fell and how his leg got trapped under the opposing player. I was very impressed to see him go back onto the ice and try to get a shift in to see what he could do. But when he looked to the bench and gingerly skated back I knew it was bad news.
This will almost certainly be the end of Frolov as a Ranger, I for one am sad about how he is going out. We all expected more offense out of him, and a little more heart, but he did try to get his game going. He had a few GWG for the club. He’ll hopefully be able to play hockey next season, though it will probably be in the KHL. Hope he has a fast recovery and can still play the game.

I’m not that worried…
I think that calling up Newbury sends the following message – we’re not looking for more skill on the front end from a call up – just solid 4th line play.
This leaves us with
Dubi – Step – Zuccs
Aves – AA – Gabby
Feds – Boyle – Prust
Newbury – Dru – Weise
Essentially, they have faith that those 3 lines have enough skill to keep us afloat until Cally comes back, and the 4th line should get some grinding minutes, with Drury possibly seeing time cycled on another line – PP and PK.
If anyone else goes down, then I start worrying – I’m comfortable with the lines above for now.
We don’t want to go desparately seeking another top 6 guy, because we’ll get taken advantage of in a trade for our desparation.
I don't know if the Rangers should go out for a top 6 guy
just someone to hold the fort until Cally returns.
"Fantasy, reality, science Fiction. Which is which? Who can tell?"
I wish Fro well, we all had bad things to say about his game but no ill will should be wished, he did not live up to the expectations put on him, and many have not in NY. Any cheap veterans available? I can see Sather lighting up a cigar now as he gets on the phone.
For years, I’ve had this daydream of Sather dropping a lit cigar in his lap and burning Little Slats. A guy can let his mind wander, can’t he?
