New York Rangers Analysis: Michael Del Zotto and Mats Zuccarello Making Their Cases

Both Michael Del Zotto and Mats Zuccarello walked into training camp this year with their eyes set on a starting role with the New York Rangers in 2011. Well if these past two games in Europe have been any indication, both will get their wish.

Let's start with Del Zotto, who recorded an assist in the win over HC Sparta Thursday and then exploded for a goal and an assist in Friday's victory over Frolunda. Del Zotto not only put up points, but took good shots, created chances and was solid in his own zone.

Does he have more work to do? Of course he does. But the Del Zotto we have seen the past two games is not the same defenseman who got sent down to the AHL last year, or the defenseman who's first few days in camp were less than memorable. This Del Zotto is playing with confidence, controlling the power play and becoming a difference maker. All attributes he brought to the table his rookie year with the Rangers.

Join me after the jump for more.

Star-divide

While Del Zotto did make a few mistakes in the offense zone, don't forget that he's playing on the bigger ice surfaces for one of the first times in his career. For a defenseman, this transition is incredibly difficult. Remember that Del Zotto's transition is different than Tim Erixon's; who is making the transition from a bigger rink to the smaller one. So to see a few mistakes defensively from Del Zotto is expected.

Del Zotto isn't the only player fighting for a spot who has impressed though.

Zuccarello is also impressing, putting in a two assist performance Friday against Frolunda. Zuccarello was probably the best Ranger on the ice Friday, making something happen almost every time he touched the ice. Zuccarello's primary assist on the Del Zotto goal was a thing of beauty, and his ability to create space was top-flight.

Granted, Zucarello has played a significant amount of time with the bigger ice surface, so you would expect him to be comfortable out there. But, unlike Del Zotto, he hasn't just been doing well in Europe. Zuccarello has ben impressing since the first day of camp, and he's truly seeming like a lock to make this team out of camp.

I know Erik Christensen scored a goal yesterday (really the first time he's made a difference this camp), but Zuccarello is simply a better option than either him or Sean Avery

Tim Erixon has also made strides, playing an astounding amount of ice time in the win over Frolunda Friday. Erixon has been on and off since Traverse City, but I still think he's going to make this team this year, especially since Marc Staal will need some time to adjust.

Anyway, thoughts on all this guys?

Good for these guys.

Since Tort’s made the statement that he wanted to infuse more youth into the lineup, I don’t think many of us expected EC or Avery to have much of a shot. This LW spot was the obvious position up for grabs. The question has been, and still is, who gets the position, who gets to sit in the press box and who gets to ride the bus in CT. I would think it’s unanimous that MZA won the spot for opening night, I think Avery has shown way more than EC and was effective as a fill-in last season, and I think EC has been his played his usual disappearing act. In addition, with 5 natural centers in the starting line-up I see no need to carry a 6th in the press box.

The blueline is not as cut and dry.

Predictions for opening day roster?

What do you guys think? Who’s it going to be?

by SeanI on Oct 1, 2011 6:59 AM EDT reply actions

The way to view MDZ, is to not look at his past two seasons. This is a new season. He is improving little by little every game. This is exactly what we want.
I was not as high on MDZ and MZA as some of you, but the way MZA has been playing, I have changed my opinion.
I think MDZ, given some room to make errors, will do well on the Blue line this season. MZA > Avery and E (Tuck back) C.

Erixon played close to 30 minutes last night

I still can’t see him not on the roster for opening night.

Unfortunately he didnt play well.

The more he plays the leds read he looks. He needs 20-30 games in CT.

Less ready he looks.

Erixon could play

but I think bickel would be better at this point. Why play Erixon who would be a serviceable third pair D man when they can put in a more seasoned and experienced guy (at least at the beggining of the season)

Erixon is better served getting first pair and first pp minutes on the whale this season to mature like Sauer did.

If Erixon is serviceable right now he should be ahead of Bickel

who is only a serviceable NHL third pair D man in his dreams. But if they just think Erixon needs a couple of months in Hartford to adjust to the American game, then so be it.

D without Staal

Sauer / Girardi
MDZ / McD
Bell / Eminger

Bickel healthy scratch.

He won’t be. But my visions are sometimes clouded. Have faith my son, your devoted following of my teachings will be rewarded soon.

How much...

I haven’t had a chance to watch the games, but how much difference is the ice making for MDZ concerning turnovers? It would seem that being on bigger surface would bode well for his passes not getting picked off. Hopefully the kid is getting some confidence so when he gets onto the smaller surfaces, he doesn’t start trying to force passes again.

Yesterdays game...

He had some bad ones early in the game. Got better as it moved along. Great movement and finish on power play.

I resigned myself to accepting that he’s going to be in the line up until he forces Torts to send him down.

If he could just be an even player at ES his PP production would shut down all the haters
(Which includes me).

Should they try out MZA on the left side of Gaborik and Richards? I know he’s a RW but worth a shot right?

he can play both wings

He said in an interview last season he can play either and doesnt have preference.

But I still think they need a size guy whi retrieves puck on the top line.

by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Oct 1, 2011 10:06 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Well. We might need Erixon back soon. Like 15 games into the season soon.

No surprises. The more Erixon played the more he looked like he needed some time. He’ll be back by Christmas.

I foresee all three playing in the NHL by seasons end.

im a big supporter of MDZ and i think people overreact by labeling him a bust...

But please, way to opttimistic of a post. Just last week after the games vs the devs and flyers everyone was saying how MDZ is not ready blah blah blah

Suddenly he has 2 good games against european teams captained by players who can’t make the NHL and just like MDZ is destined for greatness again.

He’s 20/21 years old he’s got a whole future ahead of him but let’s not be so shortsighted with the good and the bad

by polishBLUE on Oct 1, 2011 5:10 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Agreed.

1-2 decent preseason games mean nothing.

"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

LET'S GO RANGERS!!!

Bell

i think with his camp he has earned to play if Staal is out for any period of time, Bickel is a great surprise as was Parlett. But they both should spend the year with the Whale and make things more interesting next year when we have more players competing for spots that might not even be there
