Torts Bad decisions = 3 losses

I know the season just started, but I have some serious problems with torts thus far. First off, Erik Christensen? are you serious? look i know Avery had a lot of haters and got a lot of negative attention but all Torts has done for that past year is talk about this teams identity. The identity is to be a hard working team that forechecks and creates opportunites from hard work. 2 players who made the team this year that don't do that are Christensen and Zuc. Look both of those guys just don't fit into our system. Christensen is worthless 8 out of 10 games and zuc just gets pushed around and is just as inconsistent as christensen. Maybe they were good on the shootout last year but is Torts really expecting to be in that many shootouts this year? I hope not.  Maybe Avery had a bad season last year statistically but considering I watched every game i realized that he was able to get the puck in deep, keep the puck and he also provided an emotional edge that neither of the  2 players i named have. Christensen is probably the biggest joke of a player on the team I think that if my 5 year old little brother dropp

ed the gloves with him hed knock him out. Im just so frustrated watching the team thus far and seeing them suck. When Staal and Saur comeback we will be better but lets face it- If we didnt have Hank in net we would have been blown out of the water every single game this season. Im not saying that is how it is going to be, in fact I think the rangers are going to have a successful year but I already see the negative side effectof having a guy like EC on the squad

Join me After the jump

Star-divide

Okay, so I dont want you people to think im a bad ranger fan. I know its only been 3 games. My opinion is that Torts is one of the best coaches in the league, but he made a couple questionable decision this pre-season.

I think Hank is the best goalie in the league and also our team is full of young talent that will lead the rangers to future success. But what is going to happen when we show up at MSG with a loosing record. ( we all know how the rangers always play bad at home). I just get so frustrated wathcing the team so far this year, it just reminds me of the same old rangers who seem like they are afraid to dominate.

Once again, I am a fan of 23 years and Love the rangers more than anything but these same eerie feelings are creeping back and the buzz from the preseason has worn off - until they string together some wins that is.

Discipline

Bad discipline is coaching. The fact that we have spent almost a period per game a man down is pathetic. That needs to be tightened up asap and it is on torts and the leaders of the team to do so. But so far it has been the leaders (gaborik, callahan, dubi, girardi etc) taking all the terribly timed penalties. Obviously, no penalty is a good one but the fact that gaborik lazily hooked a guy down because he wasn’t moving his legs with 4 minutes to go is a fucking joke and reflects badly on the demeanor of this team.

Well here things you could take away so far as positives:

Richards is no Drury/Gomez/Holik/Rucinsky or anyone you could think of.
Richards and Gaborik look solid.
Girardi is a tank.
Hank is playing outta his mind.

Now the bad:

We have no defense.
Our 4th line is awful.
I’m questioning whether or not there’s a player named Erik Christensen. Call me a conspiracy theorist if you want.
Rupp is awful.

We just sent down MZA to CT and called up Kris Newbury. Soon we will call up Hagelin for EC. Or at least I pray we do.

We are going to go to Philadelphia... and we are going to win.- Glen Sather

Well, i disagree with your assessment of MZA. I just believe he isn’t being given a fair chance.

I don’t love Wolski, BUT he’s a skilled player and he worked well last year with MZA and Stepan. I’d like to keep those three together.

Keep the pack line and Boyle’s line together as well. Lastly, you can put whomever you’d like with Richie and Gabby and they’ll play good.

The positives here are the future. We can keep three of the lines we had together tonight, and the last one can be made up of some combination of MZA/Borque/Hagelin/Thomas/Kreider.

That would be something I’d love to see.

Play the top two line 20 minutes each, and play the bottom two the rest depending on the game situations.

Agreed, MZA barely had a chance to prove himself in the regular season. How is he suppose to impress when he plays the fourth line with Rupp and Christensen?

by Zuppa Di Pesce on Oct 16, 2011 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Everyone keeps complaining about defense, we only gave up 4 ES goals in three games. How is that bad? We had (8) penalties tonight. I think 18 over the last three games. Bad odds to overcome. Well, if Newbury does not add in the point column, he is good for some penalties.( I do like his chippy play though.)

Damn, good find.

4 in 3 games is actually a strength, not a weakness.

And yeah I think its 19 over the last 3 games.

It’s no surprise we’ve been losing. You can’t win hockey games spending 15+ minutes in the box every night, especially not without two top 4 defensemen.

Well..

In Torts defense we’re without our all-star d-man, so that has to be taken into consideration. But aside from Staal, I’ve been screaming torts is just not a very good coach for some time now. Sather has actually assembled a better team of players than last year that now appears to look worse out of the gate than last year.

I also believe Torts is terrible at nurturing and recognizing talent. I really good coach should be able to bring out the best in players. I have not seen this once since he came on board, actually it is been quit the opposite. What I fear now is that he will run the performing players into the ground, again, as he benches and punishes everyone else for not performing. Then by mid season all those performing players will be out of gas like last year. Hope this dont happen but I’m worried…….. :( Hope he can prove me wrong.

Here is a common statement by fans: It’s the 13th forward spot, why are we even talking about it? Injuries, that’s why. Sending Weise to the Whale and exposing him to waivers when you have all-time stiff EC on the roster was idiotic. For some reason the Canucks have a spot for him and we don’t. Potvin, you are absolutely correct. EC has no business on this team as the only time he’ll hit someone is if he accidentally bumps into someone waiting for his coffee at Starbucks. Letting Weise go was a subtle mistake that matters because you have injuries and you need depth. The other mistake is MDZ. Watching last night’s Isles’ game and still seeing those failed home run passes, still after all this time, is just mind boggling. Not to mention that when he is a defensive situation he is totally lost. I mean what was that when the Isles came on the rush and he totally took himself out of the play to give the shooter a clear lane towards the King? he looked like a fish out of water flopping around. Then Reasoner made him look stupid in the 3rd when Reasoner went around him like he wasn’t there. MDZ CAN’T SKATE. That’s a problem playing with the big boys. MDZ should be at the Whale. Erixon hasn’t been perfect but he’s not outclassed at all.

by Richter1994 on Oct 16, 2011 6:38 AM EDT reply actions

I agree. I much rather have kept Weise over EC. Weise is a great fit for this team, and he has been ready for a few years now. But instead we sign a guy like Rupp for 1.5 million, who is bringing absolutely nothing to this team. Nothing. He’s not skilled enough to play with the skilled guys, and not good enough defensively to play with the defensive guys.

I also agree about MDZ. It’s sad, and I don’t know what else we can do with him, but in all honesty, he’s not an NHL player. Erixon looks better than him, and Eminger and Woywitka are cheaper.

Perhaps next season when Wolski and EC are gone we are able to bring up guys like MZA/Borque/Hagelin/Thomas/Kreider to make up a line, while keeping Step with Richie and Gabby, the Pack line, and Feds-Boyle-Prust together.

Also, on the defensive side (since we’ll have some money), maybe we can bring in another solid defensemen. Nothing great, but a guy that can eat up 15 minutes a night with Erixon and not look foolish. Than Torts would be able to trust his entire defense AND roll four lines.

I have to admit I have been wrong about Rupp so far. I kept raving about that signing and thought he was perfect for 4th line minutes. he really has done nothing so far. I would love for Torts to roll 4 lines. I don’t get why it’s necessary to play forwards over 20 minutes in Oct and D close to 30. I would have liked MZA with Boyle and Prust on the 3rd line. Nailing him to the 4th line with E-Stiff is a death sentence and he got it.

by Richter1994 on Oct 16, 2011 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Only reason Girardi and MCD are playing 30 minutes is because of injuries. Most any team would have trouble absorbing those types of injuries. We are actually absorbing them ok, because those two are playing almost 30 mins. Furthermore, we have a system, and the system is greater than the sum of its’ parts. After all this is working out, I don’t think the Rupp signing was good,(Although only 3 games) especially when we could have brought up a youngster or two.

+1

On MDZ and Weise and, well, EC.

Avery should still be wearing a Ranger uniform. He wasn’t going to stay long term, but we’ve lost something of our identity on a number of fronts.

I’m also beginning to suspect that Cally is a bit young to lead the club.

We’ll be okay. No jumping off the cliff yet. We still have a solid core.

And no, this isn’t Torts’ fault.

We need to get healthy.

It may have been a cap issue with Avery, as we have been told. Maybe it wasn’t. Maybe it was a business “suggestion” from the NHL due to 24/7, who knows?
If you see Cally was way different against the Isles, than he was the first two games. I think he was told to calm down a little, he was hitting everything in site. He was leading by example. Maybe he is a bit to young, very possible.

I think the 24/7 cameras had a lot to do with the Avery decision. The NHL may have put the idea in Glen Sather’s ear that having Avery on 24/7 isn’t a good idea. However, this was not the sole reason Avery is gone. Avery is gone because he and torts don’t get along, the 24/7 issue, and the fact that he was making way too much money for a player that had 3 goals and a lot of penalty minutes.

On a more positive note

Anyone notice our passing? I think it has improved quite a bit, or at least on the top 2 lines. Seeing the exchanges between step, maggy, richards, callahan, dubs, and anisimov has been beautiful. Once we get our D back we can be quite the strong team

I think MZA was playing better than EC, I would have expected EC to be sent down unless MZA was to clear cap for a move? I agree that both these guys are soft. I just dropped EC from NHL 2012 and the Isles claimed him off waivers.
Our defense is banged up Staal and Sauer out is huge….considering we have 4 even strength goals against in 3 games despite that is pretty amazing. The amount fo penalties being called this season is stoopit, its not just against us. i watched a bunch of games recently and was just scratching my head. at all the dumb calls.

Ya I don’t know what they see in EC. He has skill but no drive, which amounts to very little. And in his shootout chance he completely failed to prove why he has a spot on the first team. Whatever, maybe we’ll be pleasantly surprised later on.

Rangers need Avery

I think its plain to see that Avery’s presence cannot just be measured on the scoreboard. Three games in heres how I see it:

Someone tell Brandon Dubinsky the season has started -
MDZ looks like weak in front of his own net – (Hey Sather seriously my 6’5" 235 lb. 16 year old son is a better fit now than MDZ – physically he is one of the strongest DMEN playing in North America at any level and he is still growing – any interest?)
MZA – the experiment is over, time to play hockey at the proper level – AHL or KHL not NHL
Mike Rupp – looks like a waste of money
Callahan – stop trying to do too much too early to – you are trying to overcompensate for the lack of effort by some of your teamates – We love you as captain and want to see you healthy for the entire season
Brad Richards – as advertised so far – cant do it by himself
Gaborik – playing better already
Wolski – contributes best when he is not in the lineup
Lundquist – well he is playing like Lundquist
Tim Erixon – not bad at all
Ryan McDonaugh – another good player feeling the pressure with injuries and trying to do too much at times and getting into trouble
Brian Boyle – looks like the clock has struck midnight on last seasons fast start and the goal scoring player has turned back into a pumpkin
Woywitka – its only one game hard to say but looks slow to react – in all fairness need to see more
Derek Stepan – playing well

Power Play and more

We certainly have enough talent to put together a power play yet have not for the second year? When do you blame coaching?

Discipline. Discipline issues after three games, injury problems, and a tough preseason playing on over-sized ice can be explained. I’m not worried about that. I am however worried about how we play once we stop taking penalties. The coaching staff has to find the balance. Last year we took to many periods off. This is on the coach as well.

Developing young talent. This is what we need most from our coaching staff. I’m not going to blame MDZ’s development on Torts. I watched enough of him in Hartford last year to see him play just as bad on the Whale Pack.

I think MZA is serviceable and a step up from Christiansen but assume he is down for cap space. Newbury and Bell both looked great for the Whale Saturday night. Rupp has to go. I think he is here because of Sathers influence.

I think Torts is a good coach but not without problems. He needs to step it up this year.

I’d rather have Weiss sitting in our press box then on another team. He fit in our system just fine and while likeley will never be an impact player you can be certain Christianson never will be.

by CTrangerfan on Oct 17, 2011 10:03 AM EDT reply actions

I always admired how Tom Renney had faith in all of his players. I do not see that from Torts and I think it has an impact on the team. Let the guys play for a while. We are all talking about how its so early in the season…there is no cohesion yet and Torts is directly responsible for it. There seems to be some sort of tension that exists that causes players to be “playing on eggshells,” for lack of a better phrase.

As for Rupp, he was a first round pick (then a third rounder?!) so he has some playing ability. He would be successful with players who shoot the puck often so he can stand in front. He never was much for fighting…I always had thought prior teams had forced him into it. He looks better than in the past but that Parros fight was a mess.

And, man, is Lundqvist awesome. I could not blame a goal on him this year if I tried. He has so much pride that I actually feel bad for him when the Rangers lose.
