New York Rangers Recap: Henrik Lundqvist STEALS The Show In Vancouver

Calling all cars, calling all cars, we have a robbery in progress, and his name is Henrik Lundqvist. There's nothing more to say, other than how INSANE Henrik Lundqvist played in this game. He stole this game for the Rangers, and walked away with a forty, count em', FORTY save shutout. The Rangers finally broke their drought, and brought home their first win of the season.

The Rangers got themselves into penalty trouble once again, but were able to kill off every single one of them, mainly because of Henrik Lundqvist. Not to mention, there were four offensive zone penalties, out of the eight that were taken throughout the game. Anyways, enough of the negatives, and onto the positives.

Mike Rupp finally put the Rangers on the board, at the 2:22 mark of the third period. From there on out, the flood gates opened for the Rangers. Ryan McDonagh gave the Rangers a solid 2-0 lead, off a great pass coming from Brandon Dubinsky. Great play by McDonagh to read the play and pinch in to create the scoring chance, and wound up working in their favor.

Follow after the jump for more.

Star-divide

Ryan McDonagh played like a man possessed in the third period, notching the Rangers second goal, and another spectacular pass on the Marian Gaborik goal. Ruslan Fedotenko made an incredible pass to Brian Boyle, and he notched his first of the season as well. You want to talk about a pass? Watch the replay, and watch how Feds threaded the needle, and Boyle tapped the puck in past Luongo.

Marian Gaborik capped off the game with a slam dunk pass coming from Ryan McDonagh. The vision of McDonagh on the original pass was outstanding; he is really emerging as another top defensemen for the Rangers. He finally has that offensive touch that he has been striving for. Henrik gave the Rangers the opportunity to take this game, and they answered back with just that.

This is a huge win to start off the four game road trip, and hopefully it carries over through the next three games. From the moment the Rangers scored their first goal, the energy was on the ups. Besides all the chances the Rangers gave the Canucks, Henrik Lundqvist stood on his head and stole this one for the Rangers.

The Rangers will have a day off tomorrow, before departing for Calgary tomorrow night. The Rangers will face the Flames on Thursday, starting at 9:30 PM. I'm going to end this recap with a little humor: "What time is it? Four past Luongo."

:-) I’m having a hard time believing we won. It was looking really bad back there for awhile. This team really knows how to keep us glued to the tv

They have a lot to work on, but you could see some incremental improvement tonight in the battle level and in some of the work in the offensive zone. Passing was better.

So, still a work in progress, but hopefully we get Staal back soon and they’ll tighten up in front of Hank, who is an absolute magician.

In addition to his goal, Rupp had a couple of nice plays defensively.

The 4th line Newbury-Rupp-EC actually looked decent tonight.

Well other than EC that is.

by EricBrat20 on Oct 19, 2011 2:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah. Whoever called him a ghost seemed correct in this game. Newbury and Rupp usually made something of their ice time, but…it was sort of a surprise to read the box score, then remember that EC was technically “playing” in that game.

Holy shit, thank you hank. and what a beautiful buildup to the 4th goal in the offensive zone. Great job McD

What a steal

Hank stole this damn game we did not deserve to win this. If Luongo was half the goalie he is payed to be we would have lost this in overtime going in 0-0.

Hank is the shit

Rupp played better and got lucky but he is still shit.

Stepan looked good didnt produce but looked solid and faster then last year.

Cally, Duby, and AA need to get up and press in some hard forechecking to get this team going when the other team is not giving richards, gabby, stepan any room.

We started to pressure in the neutral zone again that is really one of the only pluses from the team.

I like what Torts was doing with the lines, he was running the 4th liners but throwing in a good player with them to keep the other team from taking advantage of players like EC and Rupp.

I liked that torts doghoused prust but a whole period without him is a bad idea maybe a few shifts we need prust playing if he isnt hurt. He did take two terrible penalties though, the second one was a bit weird though I doubt he wanted to throw the guy but didnt realize that he was off balance.

by Pballer505 on Oct 19, 2011 2:25 AM EDT reply actions

Not sure how Rupp got lucky

not like he had a goal that went off his foot. He drilled one home.

by graves9 on Oct 19, 2011 2:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Lucky in the sense that it bounced right to him with space to bury it.

by EricBrat20 on Oct 19, 2011 2:29 AM EDT up reply actions

I could think of a few players, perhaps one sent down to Hartford, who would have shot that wide!

by BigB22 on Oct 19, 2011 7:46 AM EDT up reply actions

like graves said though, he did bury it

Always a good thing when the 4th line can capitalize on chances.

"Lopez wants it away, and it's hit deep to left center, Andruw Jones on the run, this one has a chance... home run!, Mike Piazza!, and the Mets lead 3 to 2!"

by metsman07 on Oct 19, 2011 8:46 AM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn't say Torts was intentionally mixing the lines ...

When you have that many penalties, it’s tough to get the lines back together. Between 2 on the ice and the guy in the box, strange combinations are often the result after the 2 mins.
Hank stole the game, Luongo played like shit. That’s all. Remember we we didn’t touch the puck for almost the entire second period. Lots of work to do.

Incredible game by Hank

one of the best ever by him which says a lot. He made so many ridiculous saves and really kept the team in the game. for the first two periods. Hank made all the big saves and Luongo who went unchallenged in the first two periods did not make one tough save.

Ryan McDonagh had a rough first period as Torts stated in the post game and then rebounded and had a monster third period. He probably showed more offensive upside today than he did in his 40+ games last year. That rush on Gaborik’s goal was Leetch like. I’m not suggesting he’ll ever come close to the offensive player Leetch was but that gave me visions of Leetch.

The Woywitka-Eminger pair was terrible for the most part. I hope one of those guys takes a seat soon enough.

Prust had a weird game in that he took bad penalties, but made two good passes leading to goals. The penalties need to be cut down and the offensive zone penalties need to stop altogether.

The Rangers got more from the bottom two lines tonight than they got in the previous two games with two goals.

Ruslan Fedentenko is so underrated.

Dan Girardi is a beast.

I’d like to see the AA line give the Rangers more than they have the first four games. They had a good shift in the third leading to a oal, but the Rangers need more consistency from them. Dubi needs to stick to fighting Mike Richards and not a guy like Bieska.

Gotta give the much maligned Rupp credit, he scored a big goal and played well.

All in all, nice to get a win and hope the team improves and gives you a complete 60 minute game next time out.

by graves9 on Oct 19, 2011 2:26 AM EDT reply actions

Once again thanks to the Habs for MCD

He could be a 30-35 point guy this year and improve on that as the years go by. I’d give him some pp time. Again Rangers need to be more disciplined or they’ll pay for it.

Didn’t see the game but obviously this was the King. McD is a stud and will only get better when his offensive game improves. What’s with Dubi and Cally? I read that other than a few spurts they were invisible. They need that line to produce if this team is going to succeed. I did watch the highlights and MDZ was taken to school again about 15 feet in front of the King. This is why +/- is not always an indicator. I hope the rest of his game was better. I also read that Eminger was much better which is good news.

by Richter1994 on Oct 19, 2011 6:59 AM EDT reply actions

That was in my opinion the only bad play MDZ made. Other than that he played very well in my opinion. Eminger didn’t seem that good to me every time he and Woywitka were on ice, the Canucks had quality chances.

by EricBrat20 on Oct 19, 2011 8:20 AM EDT up reply actions

ok thanks for the update. when I saw that play on the highlights I thought “oy.” but if that was the only miscue then that’s a good sign. thank God for the King to help his teammates’ +/-, lol.

No, Dubi/AA/Cally line did some great work – it’s just not showing up on the scoreboard. With the first line catching top D pair they really need to put points on the board.

Happy, but pissed

I stayed up the watch the first 2 periods and went to bed because I was exhausted and they were playing like dog shit. It was definitely bittersweet to wake up and see a 4-0 final score.

Artie

Does anybody recall in the third last night when Anisimov was breaking down the right side and right in fron t of Luongo he tried to make a pass to…Dubie? He had a clear shot on net and judging by Luongo’s play last night, AA needs to take that shot instead of trying to force a pass. That is all.

by Jawns on Oct 19, 2011 8:26 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah he tried to center it for Dubinsky, not sure why he wasn’t thinking of shooting. While he hasn’t bagged one yet, Artie looks stronger on his skates and is starting to be able to lean into a defender and protect the puck effectively. Once he masters that sort of protection plus his wing span he’s going to be a very tough player to defend against.

by MyFavBaseballSquadron on Oct 19, 2011 9:17 AM EDT up reply actions

A la Jaromir Jagr. He is one player who certainly knew how to use his size to his advantage.

by EricBrat20 on Oct 19, 2011 6:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Indeed.
Shades of days gone by when the chant was “SHOOT THE PUCK BARRY!!”

Last night I jumped out of my chair and screamed “SHOOT THE PUCK ARTIE!!!”

The simple play is to put a low, hard shot on net – if Luongo blocks it then Dubi is there for a scoring chance on the rebound. Not unlike Del Zotto’s low, hard shot that came right to the tape of Rupp – who knew exactly what to do with it.

by dbmaven on Oct 19, 2011 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions

artie

needs to start stepping up and making things happen—his passive (see what i did there?) play is getting frustrating—he has the size/speed/talent to be a major problem for other teams.

by Town on Oct 19, 2011 11:07 AM EDT up reply actions

a gem from the King

This game was won by Henrik Lundqvist. The Rangers were collectively atrocious for the first two periods last night, I can only hope that someone like Cally pointed out how well Hank was playing and how awful the rest of the team looked.

McDonagh was magnificent last night, he displayed all facets of his game….love his tenacity as much as any of his athletic skills. Erixon played well last night, as did Eminger. When Staal and Sauer come back the Rangers will have the outstanding defensive group we’ve all been waiting for.

Rupp scored a big goal last night, in typical Rupp fashion—he was in the right place at the right time, and he didn’t miss his chance. He’s looked like crap at times so far this year but last night he did what he was paid to do, against a pretty good team.

The only complaints I had from last night were that Christensen is doing nothing at all for this team; Jeff Woywitka is a lumbering beast who is showing why he’s struggled to stay at the NHL level; still too many stupid penalties; and the Rangers need some production from Dubinsky and Anisimov soon.

Prole art threat.

by greifi griffie on Oct 19, 2011 8:37 AM EDT reply actions

The Rangers need some production from Dubinsky and Anisimov soon.

I just want to point out that Callahan should not be ignored here. It’s early so it doesn’t mean much, but Dubi and Artie do have 2 points to Callahan’s 1. The 3 SOG that D & A have though is not acceptable.

Cally is not excused from this, but his play has been somewhat more dynamic compared to Dubinsky. Loved Cally tossing Burrows to the ice after Burrows was jabbing at Hank with the stick after a 2nd-period whistle.

Maybe Dubi’s ill-considered scrap with Bieksa will get him moving in the right direction.

Forgot to mention this—Lundqvist is the best goalie in the world. Luongo is not, not by a damn sight…..

That whole line needs to amp it up. In their defense, they are our top PK unit, and when you spend almost 1/3 of the game on the PK, it’s really going to detract from your EVS energy and time vs. the other 3 lines.

But that whole line needs to dominate on the forecheck. No excuses.

if they don’t score then this team is not going anywhere. they don’t have to score like a #1 line but they are needed to contribute big-time. Cally’s and Dubi’s play is not good right now except for PKing. AA has been good.

I think if Torts can properly address the penalty-taking situation and the Boyle line can accept more defensive responsibility, that line will start to take over again.

great point

but do you trust our third and fourth line to score after the gabby/richards line? The pack line needs to produce offensively—which unveils a major problem this team has—the lack of depth.

if any of the pack line or top line or top pair goes down or hank, we are screwed.

by Town on Oct 19, 2011 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Which again addresses the point that they could really use another offensive line on this team. I dunno, like something centered around Stepan-Zuccarello.

Our forwards have plenty of depth, it’s just a matter of properly allocating those resources over the course of a game/season. Our 3rd line (Boyle/Feds/Prust) should be our top defensive unit, or at least close to being on-par with the Pack line. If this team can spend less time on the PK, the Pack line should score more, and there’s no reason the Boyle unit can’t chip in 35-40 goals minimum.

Granted, I’d much rather see them have Boyle’s line as our 4th/defensive unit, and find a way to create a decent offensive 3rd line (MZA/Wolski/Stepan etc. or even let Newbury center MZA/Wolski). I think Newbury will make a fine penalty-kill guy. Boyle/Prust and Newbs/Feds should be able to handle most things, and save Dubi/Cally for the top PP units (Washington/Boston etc.).

Honestly, I only watched through part of the 2nd period

But it seemed overall like the Rangers ended up making their own luck. Everyone was skating and digging in the corners and just generally playing like they wanted to win last night.

That said, the offensive zone penalties have to stop. It’s getting ridiculous.

Better than a player moping about getting benched.

The 2nd penalty of Prust was borderline. It looked like the Nucks player was already losing his edge before contact and Prust did a decent attempt to hold up. But when it happens in real time it’s easy to make that call.

This was like rope a dope

Rangers just kept taking punches and letting Hank bail them out when needed. I had a feeling that if they kept it even through 2, they’d make the bounce to get the W. That happened when the puck bounced to MDZ in the slot. Vancouver had to be thinking ‘what the hell else can we do’ at that point.

He had 1 great opportunity before his goal IIRC, partial breakaway, shot almost beat Luongo. He did out-muscle Hamhuis in front of the net for his tap-in goal, but a dyslexic nimrod with glaucoma could have banged McDonagh’s effort home.

Most noticeable thing about Gaborik this season compared to last is that he’s attacking more; meaning he’s using his speed to cut to the middle of the ice around the faceoff circles and trying to shoot. Last year he skates wide and gets taken out along the wall. We’ll see if it continues. In his first season, he was in the middle of the ice and around the net all year (and actually scored a lot of “garbage clean-up goals”), whereas last year he was primarily a perimeter guy (injuries were the big key here, especially his shoulder, which kept him away from fighting for the puck).

I have to admit
a dyslexic nimrod with glaucoma

definitely brought a smile to my face.

If you watch the side angle (behind Gabby) replay carefully – you’ll see that a nimrod might have scored, but a dyslexic would not. Just in the nick of time, Gaborik lifts Hamhuis’ stick – otherwise it was 50-50 as to whether it would be a goal. (A dyslexic would have gotten his stick jammed in Hamhuis’ skates. :-D )

by dbmaven on Oct 19, 2011 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, but if he was dyslexic, would Hamhuis really have tried to defend him, or thinking he was not a properly functioning humanoid unit, would he have skated out to try and make a play on McDonagh before he passed/shot the puck, and therefore making something a moot point.

Now, what about a one-legged man with an eye-patch? We need to do more testing.

One thing I've noticed more of

Gaborik skating inside of the face off circles, like you said. Last year it was frustrating watching him skate along the boards and instead of cutting in he would drift around the boards and not get a good shot on the goalie

I really think those 2 things are what make Gaborik either a top-10 player in the league, or Rico Fata v2.0. Gain some speed, then pick a spot and cut at a guy. Screened-shots, draw penalties, draw other defenders to him (he’s an exceptional, yet underrated passer) to dish off to teammates. It’s night and day.

And Gaborik being more involved, especially going into the slot areas, means B-Rich will find him for some quick-strike opportunities.

Couple of things that impressed me last night

First off, the King. Pimp Henrik. Seriously, when he decides he is God, there is no scoring on him. Best examples were his Richter-esque flurry of rapid fire saves. Any one of those shots could’ve gone in, but not that night. Another time was in the 3rd, his lunging right shoulder save, on a roofed shot. You could just see the compete level to go get that shot. Just simply outstanding.

secondly, how the team sticks up for Hank. 1 tap by an opposing player on the King, and they are on their ass, no questions asked. That is the way to be to protect your keeper. You don’t think he appreciates it? you bet your ass he does.

thirdly, Brad Richards. He is dynamic, and well worth his price tag. Focus on him to shut him down, he’ll draw defenders, and dish the puck to an open linemate, like Gabby.

Nice to see Cally put Burrows on his ass in front of Hank in the second period.
