New York Rangers Recap: Rangers Down HC Slovan 4-1 In Slovakia
The New York Rangers remain undefeated during their European exhibition stint. The Rangers face off against HC Slovan today, and came away with a well deserved 4-1 win. The Rangers got into some penalty trouble early in the game, and gave up a goal on the penalty kill.
Both teams went into the locker rooms with HC Slovan up 1-0 after the first period of play. The second period was definitely much better for the Rangers, and the converted on their chances. The Rangers were given an early 5-on-3, and put on it's first unit of Zuccarello, Callahan, Dubinsky, Gaborik and Richards.
Great puck movement lead to the eventual goal by Mats Zuccarello, and a spectacular feed from Brad Richards. The vision of Richards on the powerplay, was in full effect. Just about a minute later, the Rangers converted on the powerplay once again, coming from Brian Boyle. Another series of nice passing, capping off with a Girardi pass to Boyle, put the Rangers up 2-1 in the second period.
Follow after the jump for more.
Artem Anisimov had himself a game to remember today, and it finally paid off with a shorthanded goal. Brandon Prust was hard on the forecheck, and forced the Slovan goalie to misplay the puck. He dug it out of the corner, and pass it to a WIDE open Anisimov in front of the net.The Rangers didn't finish there, and added another goal coming from Ryan McDonagh. Ryan Callahan made a great play to gain the zone, and again Slovan left McDonagh WIDE open in the high slot.
Artem Anisimov and Mats Zuccarello both had great games today, and each scored a goal to top it off. Michael Del Zotto also played a very physical game, and made some key defensive plays. The Rangers didn't start the game off well, but gained full control the final two periods, and came away with the win.
Henrik Lundqvist also had another solid performance between the pipes, after coming off a win over his former Frolunda team. Brian Boyle was on the left wing of the Gaborik, and Richards line today, and held his own out there. Seems like Tortorella is testing out what will work better up front.
Also to note, Wojtek Wolski was no in the line-up today because of an apparent groin injury once again. We will follow up on that when we hear more.
The Rangers close out their pre-season and exhibition series tomorrow against EV Zug in Switzerland at 2:00 PM. We will have an open game thread starting at 1:30 PM, hope to see everyone there!

This article confuses me. You accredited MZA with the first goal and than

You correctly accredited McDonagh with the 4th goal, but didn’t Anisimov score the third goal, and not Boyle?

I fixed it
Anisimov scored the third goal, Boyle scored the second

First of all, props to the MSG crew for capturing really nice shots of the Slovakian cheerleaders not once, not twice, but on four separate occasions. This, along with the win, started my Sunday off right.
Del Zotto has had two games in a row now where he was solid, which is great.
Anybody else feel that both Dubinsky and Fedotenko have been quiet this preseason?

Does it matter?
pre-season Hockey is meaningless to players that have the team made and you can glean nothing about their play.
Except that Avery is ready to unload a 50 point season!

Best part is if you are lucky enough to marry one of these 18 year olds, they don’t speak a word of english, and have no ambition to learn.

Rangers looked skittish in the first period
espicially in the first period, but took over the next two periods. Very strong games for Richards, Boyle, Zuke and Prust. I said it in the gamethread and the Rangers are gonna be in trouble if Bickel, Bell and Eminger all play in the first two games the Rangers will be in trouble. None of those guys are mobile and they’ll get caught out there against The Perry and Selanne lines as well as the Kopitar and Richards lines and it won’t be pretty.
you are correct
They cant hide all three. Sauer needs to play. I can live with the pairings below until Sather makes a move or Staal comes back.
McD / Girardi
Sauer / MDZ
Eminger / Bell

I just hope
That the offense with a mix of lines that play puck possession and cycling will be able to carry the team while Staal is out. LA will be a tough matchup, they’ve got good defensive players in their top 6 forwards and top 4 D. Against the Ducks it might turn into a bit of a shootout.

Between improved offense and Hank
They should stay near. 500 until Slats makes move for D or Staal gets back.

I was feeling the same way. I’m hoping that when the real games role around he becomes more physical. I’m using the logic that not everyone is taking the body as hard in exhibition and pre season games.

I don’t see why a kid like Weise couldn’t have played over him, and 1.5 a year for 3 years is waaay to much.

Yeah, I don’t really see what he brings other than size. I know size is good but we have a very chippy team already, I would have rather seen Weise or even Avery play over Rupp. but it is what it is.

smaller ice needed
I was always impressed with rupp’s play when he was a devil and penguin. His forechecking and physical play are top notch. I am going to hold off judgement on individual’s play, until we get on a smaller ice surface. I am not surprised that rupp is sort of a non factor on a large rink. Unless he is phoning it in like EC has been all preseason, let’s see what he can do when his size becomes an asset.

This is fair. I just don’t think that he’s worth that amount.

The rink size marginalizes guys like Rupp and Prust
Not so much because they don’t have speed but because there’s less board work in the offensive zone and its a different type.
Nothing wrong with Rupp in my book. I think he’ll surprise us.

Way to add to the conversation.
Manning lobs it, Burress alone, touchdown New York!
For the empty net, Mark Messier... do you believe it?! Do you believe it?! He said we will win game 6 - he has just picked up the hat trick!
Well, he’s allowed to make a point.
It truly isn’t very difficult to proof read.
