Rangers Vs. Flames: Keys To The Game
The New York Rangers took care of one glaring issue their last game, they got a win. Tonight the Rangers will try to take care of another: Scoring a power play goal. With that said, let's look at the keys to tonight's matchup with the Calgary Flames.
Convert On The Power Play: Teams that don't score on the power play have a much more difficult time winning games. Not just because they're missing out on prime opportunities to score goals, but it allows other teams to take liberties against them without the fear of paying for it. The Rangers have shown a few flashes of brilliance on the power play, but there haven't been any goals. That needs to change tonight.
The Tim Erixon Factor: The Calgary Flames have done a good job blasting Erixon as he walked out the door. Today, they've decided to take the high road and not make any comments about their once top-prospect. But what was said after the trade doesn't just disappear because the organization doesn't feel like talking now. I'm expecting big things from Erixon tonight. he's grown as a player from game one, now it's time for him to pot his first points of his budding NHL career.
Join me after the jump for more.
Limit the Penalties: How many times have we focused on this before a game? The Rangers have to stop taking bad penalties. New York took three in the offensive zone against Vancouver, something that earned Brandon Prust a seat on the bench for a period of time, and gave the Canucks chance after chance to get on the board. That has to end tonight. The Flames might not be as dangerous offensively as the Canucks were, but they have players who can put the puck into the back of the net too. Make sure guys like Jerome Iginla don't get more chances then they are already going to be able to create.
60 Minutes Means 60 Minutes: The Rangers finally put it all together Tuesday. The only problem, was it took them 40 minutes to do it. New York showed how dangerous of a team it can be in the big win over Vancouver, now it's just a matter of playing that kind of hockey for a full 60 minutes tonight.
The official New York Rangers pre-game notes are below.

The last Ranger to register at least 11 shots in a game was Brendan Shanahan on Apr. 4, 2008 vs. the Islanders (12 shots).

Two burning questions tonight...
Can Rupp take a run at that POS Glencross and bury him?
Can the Rangers stop Roman Horak from going John Tavares on their asses tonight?

hit and forecheck, takes care of everything else. I know this is taboo here but Eklund said Rene Bourque for McD and EC. Sorry, but this made me really laugh. At this point Weber has a better chance of being traded than McD does. Now if you substitute MDZ for McD…
i dont think eklund actually said that, just that many teams are interested in bourque and glencross and that the flames are interested in McD and Christensen (shame on me for actually reading that clown, boredom got the best of me). Its just more of him pulling names out of his ass to get hits to his site. for some reason eklund thinks christensen is way better than he is and thinks he actually has trade value

McD isnt going anywhere except the All Star game next year as a Ranger
Wolski/Zucc/EC/Kundratek and a 2nd rounder for Glencross and Bourque.
Tell Eklund that came directly from my ass..just like his stories from his.

NYR521, actually that’s true but I took that to mean that was his rumor. He could have said Calgary (and the rest of the free hockey world, and the not so free ones also) was interested in McD and that the Rangers would never trade him. I could have lived with that. Plus WHY would the Rangers trade a shut down D with injuries to a defense corps for another winger? I find him entertaining. I can use a good laugh during the long working day. Gaby, I’m good with that trade (I don’t think Calgary would though, lol).
At this point I would willing trade EC to Calgary for a pile of dog sh*t. If they were willing to give up some of value for him all the better.
He’s got be worth at least a black lab or maybe a doberman to keep around the locker room

Hope This Big Karlsson Dude . . .
. . . doesn’t stone the Rangers the way so many back-ups have done.
He’s 6’5". Think five-hole, boys! And get him to go post-to-post.

Anybody know what Calgary said of Erixon after the trade? I mean I could understand a little frustration from CGY just based on the fact that Erixon refused to sign there, but did they go over the line?
I don’t think they did. They didn’t come out too bad, Horak played the first 4 games as 3rd line center and looked pretty good. They got Markus Granlund with 1 of there picks and a physical D Worthorspoon with the other.
after all is said and done, considering that Erixon had a gun to the Flames’ heads, Horak and 2 2nd rounders is a pretty damn good haul. this was a no-brainer for the Rangers but I think Horak will be a good player even forgetting the draft picks for a moment.
Rangers excel at drafting and developing bottom six talent
1st line and blue line (until recently) not so much..
by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Oct 20, 2011 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions
Agreed it seems like we have infinite bottom 6 talent. Now if we could supplement them with a couple stars we should be good (which is why we went out and got Gabby and Richards).
The strategy appears to be using FAs to fill that..
Two models for success, trade your vets and suck for four years and load up on picks (islanders/penguins) or stay competitive and rely on draf to fill 80% of roster and use free agency to land top line forwards (current ranger model).

you’re right. just once I would like to see an elite home grown talent play here. last one was Leetch (not counting Richter as a goalie). King is elite but again we’re talking forward or D. Maybe Kreider breaks the streak. Maybe Thomas. I do like what I hear about Fasth and Miller too.
1-79-2. the more I read about this kid the more I might want to throw this season. well, maybe not, but one day we’ll get a kid like this. I did want Armia over Miller in this year’s draft. I thought the Rangers should have taken a chance on Armia and I got all excited when he fell to the 15th pick. then they took Miller and Buff took Armia. I hope it’s not a Sangs/Giroux (scored again tonight) type of thing.

Rangers beat these guys 2-1 last year at MSG in the game Staal delivered that monster hit. i forget who it was on but staal isnt playing tonight so not sure if they can retaliate
Matt Stajan. He friggin murdered him on that hit too. I had never seen Staal step up like that before so it was an awesome hit.
Don't forget Glencross cheapshot on Drury

Prolly the hit that ended Drury's career
Yeah I know he had that knee injury, but he was never the same after that hit.
So I'm an anti-tabloid fan, so...
Can someone fill me in on what the Flames were saying about Erixon? Fitting of Feaster, whatever it was, I’m sure.

I hate the upstate crap with MSG
Sabres game was listed in the ‘guide’ but it was blacked out and they had MSG filler program, Lundqvist and Fran.
At 9pm when I figured pregame would come on, they flipped to the Sabres game with 2 minutes left in the third. It’s unlikely to be over when the Rangers game starts and of I will be amazed if they broadcast it at all. Fuck you MSG and whoever decided Albany was Western NY, and whoever decided ANYTHING should pre-empt the RANGERS on MSG.
