Rangers Win 3-2 In Overtime: Ryan McDonagh Ends Game With 1.8 Seconds Left
The Rangers come out of Calgary with another two points, and improve to 2-1-2 on the season. Henrik Lundqvist and Ryan McDonagh both had great games once again, and the Rangers brought home two points.
The Rangers finally notched their first powerplay goal of the season, coming from none other than Marian Gaborik. Gaborik has been finding the open ice, and tallied his fourth (leading the rangers) goal of the season. Not to mention, the execution of the play was nothing short of pretty.
Just about a minute later, Jarome Iginla capitalized off a turnover in the Rangers defensive end. The pairing of Dan Girardi and Ryan McDonagh was solid again tonight, and wound up getting the job done in overtime. Brandon Prust was able to get the job done shorthanded, and scored his second of the year.
Follow after the jump for more.
The Flames defensemen drifted to the corner, which left Prust wide open, and I mean wide open in front. Boyle got the puck to the slot, and Prust buried it. Just so everyone knows, this all took place in the first period.Kris Newbury made his presence known tonight, and dropped the mitts with Cory Sarich. Sarich hit McDonagh from behind, and Newbury came to his aid, and stepped in. Shortly after, Mike Giordano tied the game up once again for the Flames, and both teams went into the locker room, knotted at 2-2.
Henrik Lundqvist stood tall in the final two periods of regulation, and made some spectacular saves to keep the Rangers in the game. Each team was held scoreless in the second and third period, and we headed to overtime to decide a winner. Both teams had their fair share of chances in overtime, but the Rangers capitalized with less than ten seconds remaining.
Ryan McDonagh started a breakout, and sent Brandon Dubinsky on the rush. Dubinsky fought off two Flames players, and dropped the puck back to Dan Girardi, who made a last ditch effort to get the puck on net. Whether it was intended or not, the puck rebounded off the back boards, and landed right on Ryan McDonagh's stick.
McDonagh made it count, and buried the puck with 1.8 seconds remaining in overtime and the Rangers win! Overall, I think it was definitely a more complete game, as opposed to the game in Vancouver. The Rangers took less offensive zone penalties, but still took their share of penalties, included two delay of game penalties.
The lucky recipient of the "victory hat" tonight was Brandon Prust, who battled, and had a great game tonight. Although, I'm torn between him and Ryan McDonagh, both players deserved it tonight. The Rangers travel to Edmonton tomorrow, where they will take on the Oilers this Saturday at 10:00 PM.

Victory Hat
I think the reason McDonagh was denied the hat was because Hank was still annoyed at him for that screen on the Calgary goal in the first period and chose to pass it on to Prust instead.

It was obvious last year that the Rangers found another rock-solid defenseman, but I wasn’t expecting McDon-Orr’s two-way game to develop so quickly. And for those of you keeping score, McDonagh has 4 points on the year compared to Gomez’s 1.
Also, props to Erixon who played a good game, especially considering the circumstances. He’s definitely making his case for sticking around when Staal and Sauer get back.
It’s going to be interesting. Tortorella likes to have his vets around, so if Erixon continues to progress, MDZ vs Eminger is going to be quite the decision.

it sure will….
MDZ made a couple of real bad pinches last night, but beyond that I thought he was solid in the d-zone. I thought Eminger really stepped up last night, especially on the PK.
All in all though, Woywitka was the only d-man last night, who really stood out as being awful to me. The others all look pretty decent.
No contest!
Eminger has been absolutely outstanding as a 3rd pair Dman. Meanwhile MDZ is leaving it up to McD to produce O on defense, while #4 gave the puck away with an ill-advised pass PLUS pinched badly leading to a 2 on 1 last night. If MDZ does not contribute to the O like Ryan is and is also a liability on D, Stevie Em is the man, without question, who stays. :)
McD failed too
Didn’t pick up Iginla on the first goal.
(Thankfully Ignlina had a horrible night backchecking also – directly responsible for Prust and McD goals)

Again not pretty, but what a feeling!
I was pissed at Dubi the whole game for not doing anything but he was crucial to the winning goal. If that second line can get off its ass, we’ll be in business.
No letdown for these last two road games – both should be won.

I don’t want to put too much hype on McDonagh. Meaning the game at Vancouer was Brian Leetch like. But him being at the right place at the right time to stuff the OT Winner is sort of Leetch like.
Meaning I will try to keep the comparisons down to a minimum. But seeing him doing well is fantastic and Gaborik with 4 goals in 5 games is a fantastic start and Brad Richards looks good with him too. A slow start with two points in three games, now 2 for 2 on their Western Canada road trip.
I’m feeling good about this team right now.

Absolutely agree. He’s so slick with the puck and takes everything in stride, not too cocky when doing good but not too hard on himself when average. Very leetch-like. Maybe more than staal. Staal is a very good D, our cornerstone, but McD is the real deal no kidding

Staal is the defensive rock we need back there to absolutely shut down top players. McD while he may never be that good defensively (but I wouldn’t put it pass him to develop into it either) will certainly be way more involved offensively which is great when we sorely lack that offensive defenseman. Staal, Sauer and Girardi are all very good defensemen but let’s be honest we’re not gonna get much out any of them offensively. That is why McD will certainly be a great 2 way defenseman for a long time on this team.

Girardi and Staal both finished top 50 in the NHL last year in defensemen points last season. That’s plenty of offense.

Agreed, I think that most people (including rangers fans) perceive our d-men as offensively inept or at least below average. But I think we could be really good in that category when you consider that we could potentially have five guys scoring 30+ pts a year on the back end (Staal, Girardi, MDZ, McD, Erixon). However realistic this potential is very debatable but there is no denying that it is a very real possibility those guys consistently put up those numbers throughout their career.

Good point plus
Marc had 2 key SHGs as I recall, Dan chipped in a lot of critical PP points and who can forget Sauer’s GWG agst Timmy and the B’s when it mattered most.
Sure it’d be great to have a Norris caliber guy back there w.r.t. offense, but I am very happy with our D as long as line #1 keeps producing as they are and should.
And speaking of Norris, if Danny G keeps playing the minutes he has been, he will be worthy of All Start consideration like Staal was last year,
Hopefully, it continues. :)
Unbelievably, we could come home from this godforsaken road trip with 10 out of a possible 14 points.

From now on, Dan Girardi is to be known as “Another Player”

:)
I think he’s already been known as that to the entire NHL, NHL media, and NHL fan base (aside from NYR) until this year. With Staal out, all of the sudden the Versus people (during Europe games) were all over Girardi like he was a shiny new toy. It’s like they saw no Staal, but realized ‘Another Player’ was playing over half the game and doing everything for the Rangers, and suddenly like ‘Another Player’?! Who is that?!

But Oli was the Flames best Player IMO. it seemed like every time they were having a bad power play, Oli would come out flying and start their forecheck for them. didnt exactly make me regret him leaving haha, but hes been nothing but solid for them to start the season.

I know it is early and I know he looks phenomenal, but what do you guys think? Keep playing him until he has a questionable game? Or give him a rest in at least one of the coming games? The team has been leaning on him pretty heavily since the season started. He may not even need it just yet, but I think he should be given a break against either edmonton or winnipeg (or both).

Top 4 D Pairing
Mcdonough is sure making it tough to take him off of that first pairing. You see torts splitting up Staal and Girardi and going McD-Girardi and Staal Sauer? Give them both a 20-25 minutes, and essentially make them line 1a and 1b. Not sure if this makes sense or not, but McD sure is thirving with Girardi…

Totally agree
It is SO worthy of consideration. Granted not in the same league, but it’s in the same vain of Leetch/Beuke and Zubi/Lowe. A guy more skilled on O and a stay at home for each pairing.
I think it’s definitely worth trying.
If need be agst an Ovie-type line, then you put 18 and 5 together as a wall when you need it.
Who is the skilled offensive guy on the Staal/Sauer line? I would consider both defensive defensemen while I consider both Girardi and McD two way defensemen. McD with the higher upside offensively of course.
As a fan base we like to consider Staal a defensive defensemen, even though he was in the top 50 in points last year. He’s honestly a two-way guy, that just happens to be shutdown as well.
Once Staal is healthy, he joins Girardi on the first pair. I could easily see those two playing 25 minutes a night, and McD and Sauer playing another 22, leaving the bottom pair to pick up the rest.
Keeps our top 4 fresh.

i asked a few threads ago...
when do we move mcD up to the first pair with staal and Georgy said it didn’t make sense because they both shoot with the same hand.
so my next question is: What do we do when mcD forces our hand into getting him first line minutes? Do we put staal on the second pair dare I say?
Remember that even when Staal returns he's going to be handled
with caution. He won’t be playing 20 minutes a night (I would assume) the first week or so he’s back. No need to rush him at all.

As I re-think this, Girardi and Sauer are the only current RH D-men on the team, so some pair would have to be LD-LD. I’ve been thinking 3rd pair, but I suppose it’s possible to move Sauer down, and go with:
Staal-McD
Erixon-Girardi
Del Zotto/Eminger – Sauer
In some ways, that might make more sense than having Erixon-Del Zotto together.

if del zotto can EVER get it together and starts producing
while not causing me to bite my nails every time he’s in transition, he could be a good player with Girardi on the second pair and have erixon with sauer on the third pair—this would really allow us to not overwork any one pair and have a decent amount of offense on each.
Speaking of hands??
Anyone else notice how many RW we have that shoot left.? Last night, there were many rushes other than Dubi’s in OT where guys had open lanes on the right side but were on their backhand. Frustrated the heck out of me as they flipped it harmlessly towards little henrik. :(

ahhhh, 2 were not drafted. while the jury is out on the recent drafts I do see a big improvement. face it, the reason for their mediocrity since the last Cup is because of terrible drafting. there’s no getting around hat fact. MDZ is not a #1 pick at all right now and in my opinion never will be.
to be more precise
only two defensemen in the lineup was drafted by the Rangers, Sauer and Del Zotto
Girardi was signed undrafted so he counts as home grown. you count Staal for assessing the drafting in the past even though he’s not in the line-up now.

I'll be as excited as I damn well please
I said drafting and DEVELOPMENT. Discounting Girardi because he wasn’t drafted is a complete logic failure. Making brilliant trades for prospects is as good as drafting IMHO – because you have to have it thru draft / trade to get what we’ve got. Rangers drafted a ton of guys who turned out to be terrific – in other places.
The result is an under 29, top 10, NHL-grade D corps.

who said you can’t be excited about the future? I am as well but that doesn’t change what’s happened in the past (drafting) and the future is not guaranteed either. let’s see how it all works out first before we proclaim drafting success. I agree that Staal, Girardi, and Sauer are winners.
We have a great D corp. We’ve done well enough in the draft and development department in this respect to rightfully be pretty encouraged.

Do they have a bad draft history? Hell no.

by SimpleManiac on Oct 21, 2011 4:17 PM EDT up reply actions
don’t get me wrong, I am VERY excited about: Kreider, Thomas, McIlrath, Fasth, Fogarty, Hagelin, Bourque, McColgan, etc. But they’re all not going to make it. HOPEFULLY one or two will become elite and some others serviceable. If you get one “winner” in a given year then it’s a successful draft. 2 in one year is a home run. I agree with you on the D, we do have to temper it a little due to Staal’s health issues, but we could have a D corps that rivals any team from top to bottom. can you imagine Staal-Girardi, McD-Sauer, Erixon-McIlrath in their primes? wow, lol.
You don’t see MDZ in any future plans? He’s improving game by game, just like Erixon and McDonag… or are you predicting MDZ gets moved in a trade?
Well, if Erixon continues to improve at this pace, and another guy like VTank or Mcilrath step up and surpass MDZ, than yes he will probably be packaged in a trade.
Just my thoughts.

Haha well
half of them didn’t come from the Rangers draft. And, the three best healthy defenseman on the Rangers right now were not drafted by the Rangers.
We can’t really claim development of Erixon, McDonagh or Girardi
who develops them then?
Erixon, McDonagh, and Girardi are Ranger property….please explain how a player like McDonagh, who never played for the Canadiens, has been developed by any other NHL organization….and when you’re done with that, please explain how Erixon and Girardi have been developed by other NHL teams.
Lastly, why does any of this even matter to you? The only important thing about any of this is that all 3 players are Rangers now, playing well for the Rangers.

Ranger drafts
With respect to a prior discussion re: Ranger drafts. 2008-DelZotto before Carlson of the Caps, but dramatically improved by picking Stepan at #2. 2006-Sanguenetti and Anisimov before Vishnevskiy and Lucic in rounds 1&2. 04-Korpikoski before Zajac and Mike Green. And of course the all time worst draft in NHL history for Sather’s “experts”. 03,Jessiman before Parise,Dustin Brown,Getzlaf,R. Kesler,Brett Burns and Cory Perry!
Anisimov was drafted after Lucic. And I dunno how Vishnevsky is anything to care about, Giroux was the prize there.
