How The New York Rangers And Ryan Callahan Are Performing Thus Far
While browsing around the internet today, I stumbled upon a debate going on between New York Rangers fans. They were debating whether the play of Ryan Callahan has decreased since the season has started. I'm here to say that although it seems it has changed, it hasn't.
Some were stating that Callahan was "invisible" out on the ice, and he wasn't play up this his potential. Although, every shift he has taken, I notice him more and more. He finishes his checks, gets in the way of shots, and does all the gritty work. However, the main reason for this debacle was the fact that his points are not that impressive.
To be completely honest, we're only five games into the regular season, there is no need to worry. Sure it was a slow start, but knowing Callahan, he'll find his scoring touch soon enough.
Follow after the jump for more.
In my opinion, the other reason why Callahan is so-called "invisible" out there, is that the play of Marian Gaborik and Brad Richards is overshadowing Callahan. Now that's not necessarily a bad thing, as the play of Gabby and Richards has been great so far. Most people are comparing the effort and talent to the top line, and it hasn't matched up as of yet. Like I stated before, we are only five games into the season, Callahan and the pack line will get it back together, it's only a matter of time.
What are your guys thoughts on this?

pack line
Is trying to play above their skill level. When callahan and dubi realize what aspects of their game they should be utilizing and start using their strengths that got them to where they are, we will see our second line produce consistently.

They just have to get their forecheck going and re-familiarize themselves with each other. Plus last year a bunch of that line’s “hotness” was due to Dubi starting off on fire, I think he was close to the top of the goals chart for a bit.
They haven’t gotten too many points but they look close to lighting it up, especially with AA being visibly stronger on the boards.
I’m not really worried about them at all. Another thing to consider when looking at all of our forwards is that they all know they need to watch out for their D with Staal and Sauer out so that extra effort needed to get going is being used to defend more than usual.
Plus, it’s 5 games.

Yea Duby was ridiculous early last year, Boyle as well.
I’m not worried about Cally at all. He will consistently leave it all out there on the ice, and that’s why he wears that C. There’s so much more to his game than the goal-scoring.
I listen to Enter Sandman before taking exams. I wear the exact same jersey every Giants game. The Rangers goal song goes off in my head when I achieve small successes in life.

I like how the young defenders are playing
McDonaugh and Erixon seem like clones to me. Somehow they’re way farther ahead defensively then they are offensively, when as prospects they’re praised for their offensive skill so there’s a couple monsters there. And MDZ might be the Victor Cruz of the Rangers, for every good thing there is an equal and opposite nipplehead thing.
I like the potential in this team. Beating Vancouver and Calgary without Staal and Sauer is a big deal to me. Once at least one of those guys get back that pushes a turd like Witwicky or Eminger out of the lineup.
Richards and Gabby are building well, tho they just don’t seem on the same page yet but that’s understandable. I like that line but there still seems to be something missing. I dunno if its another skill guy or someone who’s more defensive minded.
Hank seems to be getting better. I didn’t know that was possible, but it just seems his positioning is perfect on every play.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
McD is the best athlete on the team and is just a playmaker—Erixon is a quieter, more reliable player who will contribute offensively every now and then when its prudent to do so—IMO mcdonagh is the Victor Cruz of the Rangers thus far, as DZ hasn’t done enough good to warrant the comparison
Richards and gaby seem to be getting better together, as you can tell gaby is getting to the dangerous areas of the ice and deferring to Richards—the trust is there—best part about it? all four of gaby’s goals have come in different games.—that line could use a grinder to get the puck on richards’s tape—like i said before, we are 2/3 of the way there with that line. Richards loses too many battles and he gets jostled in the corners—-we need a guy to do the dirty work on that line and can contribute every now and then in dynamic plays amongst the three.
Hank is beautiful
There is a lot to consider when you look at what the pack line is doing… remember they do get a lot of defensive matchups where they are playing against another teams top line, also they don’t have the luxury of 2 shutdown defensive pairings which means their role of back checking is more heavily relied upon… once we start getting our d-men back this line with be able to start pushing the pace offensively…

Cally needs to remember what got him the C and the $$$$

ZUCCARELLO 2 Goals and 1 Assist tonight.
Zucc making a big statement.
Whale up 5-0…no Bourque in line up. No Avery.

Yea I saw the tweets about that, good for Zucc. Sounded like Hagelin was flying around the ice again too on the PK. Any idea of the BC game is on? I only see Wisconsin vs. North Dakota

If I am not mistaken, it took cally like 15 games to notch his first goal last year. His effort is there. Not worried in the least. The rangers historically suck on west coast trips, through in europe and it wouldn’t be surprising if they struggled till the home rink opens. But, they have played ok so far, except for tjhe penalties. There is no way they take 8 a game all season so things will def get better.

Cally is going to be fine. I was about to write something to this effect. Once Staal and Sauer (or at the very least Sauer) return the defensive responsibilities of this line will decrease a little bit and they will be able to contribute more offensively when facing the top lines in the NHL.
I think his game has changed from the first two games. He was hitting everything, whether it was moving or not. Then he seemed to have been injured, I think it was the third game? I am sure he was told to slow down with the checking. He had to slow down. He would not have made it through twenty games playing like that without serious injury. He has been playing well and has been in the middle of a lot of good plays.
Dubi has been playing well. He appears to be one of the only Rangers who brings the puck from coast to coast. During the Calgary game, he gave himself a few good scoring chances just by carrying the puck from one end to the other.
AA has been playing very well also. You can’t say enough about how much stronger he has been on the puck.
With all that is going on, lets not over analyze things. We are doing ok, without 2 of our top defensemen. This is where playing the system is important. Yes, we can score more goals, but we will also have to give up more goals. That is the system, at least until we get healthy on the blueline. With a rook, replacements, and a defenseman trying to find his way, we are doing well.
What is our GA/G? A big 2.00(Including an EN). We have only been scored upon 5 times in 5 games at even strength, good for third in the league at ES. All this with a busted defense. Just think when this engine is firing on all cylinders. So drink a beer, chill out, and enjoy the weekend.

While the team hasn’t played a full good game yet, here is the good news: They’re still winning. how many games in the past have they had to drop a pint of blood to win a game? a good sign of a good team is to be able to “win ugly.” IMO, we haven’t played a good overall game yet but the team still finds a way to win. when the Pack line starts scoring then you will see them play a better overall game. right now the opponent has the puck too much (which leads to the penalties). Forecheck and hitting are the keys for them winning, as has been stated in the comments above. You can see that they are starting to pick it up as the season moves along. Big vast improvement from game #1 to now? The D corps. Much steadier now. A very good sign sans Staal.
When they’re missing 2 of their top-4 D, expect the forwards to be more willing to backcheck (and less willing to get a deep forecheck going unless they’re 100% sure they’ll retrieve the puck). This isn’t due to a lack of effort, but a logical expenditure of energy. Considering the penalty trouble they’ve been getting into, you can be sure the Pack Line is thinking defense first. Once we get one of our D back (or stop taking so many fucking penalties), the Pack Line will get more offensive zone starts. They’ll also get more 5v5 and 5v4 time as well, knowing they won’t be needed as much for the PK.
We are missing 2 of our top 4 D, and when that happens the coach is going to rely on the teams best defensive forwards to focus more on defense.
This is exactly whats happening. Also, because we haven’t played a home game Torts hasn’t been able to manipulate the lineups, which is a huge dead that no one seems to talk about.
Add on to that the amount of penalties we have been taken. If Dubi/Cally/AA didn’t have to kill so many penalties, they would be able to play more of an offensive game.
I have no worries with that line.
"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
