Bantering Points: A Week In Review

Every Saturday morning we'll give you the "week in review" for New York Rangers stories you might have missed that were published on Blueshirt Banter the past week. Also, we had over 1000 comments in the past two game threads, awesome work guys!

- Marian Gaborik and Brad Richards are finding their groove, and the results have been fantastic. Richards has assisted on all four of Gaborik's goals this year, and things should only get better from here.

- The Rangers have a victory hat. Yes, it's exactly what you think it is. Yes, it's the greatest thing of all time.

 - Kevin takes a look at the red-hot start Gaborik has had to the season.

Bryan takes a loot at the play of Ryan Callahan, and whether or not his play has decreased since the start of the season.

Relive the Rangers victory over the Calgary Flames.

Relive the Rangers victory over the Vancouver Canucks.

Just out of curiosity, if you were going to move him, who would you package him with and what would you want in return?

Just because another person thinks it doesn’t make it right.

Not really right or wrong. Just an opinion.

If Staal Girardi Sauer McD and Erixon can all remain healthy and continue to improve, MDZ’s trade value might be worth more than his actually value to the team as a 3rd pair guy. That’s all.

especially with McIlrath in the wings, he’ll probably be ready next year to make the jump. I like Del Zotto but with they way things are looking organizational depth wise it might make sense to trade him.

by CrazyRangerFan on Oct 22, 2011 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s all I’m saying.

I’m not blindly advocating to trade him because of some personal issue.

I’m just weighing what we would get in return for him versus what he would actually bring to the team.

Yep!

My opinion is MDZ will eventually progress to the point that he’s worth more than a Sauer/Erixon. Especially with Staal’s concussion it doesn’t make sense to trade him.

Well, if MDZ does become better than those 2, were in for an awesome decade.

Unfortunately I do not agree at all Brandon. MDZ’s problem is something that will take years to fix: He can’t skate. he’s choppy in his skating and he cannot go from side to side very easily and that’s why he gets beat so often. In fact, he’s an awful skater. his rookie year he masked his deficiencies with his pts but was still a -20. some of that was because of Redden and some of that was because of him. in year 2, the opponents figured MDZ out and took away the home run passes he got away with the first year which made him a disaster at both sides of the ice. this year, he’s trying to play within himself which is hurting his offensive game. Result: MDZ will not score enough to offset the defensive disaster that he is. If you’re putting up 50 pts then its tolerable. But he’s not doing that, no where close. I say package him while teams think he has upside and sell high. I would trade him to the Bees for Boychuk who has a big shot and is very aggressive on the defensive end. That’s my suggestion.

by Richter1994 on Oct 22, 2011 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions

but was still a -20. some of that was because of Redden and some of that was because of him. in year 2

Most of that -20 was w/ Girardi, not Redden.

he did start with Redden in the beginning I believe. but then that makes it more on MDZ than on his partner. makes the +/- even worse.

by Richter1994 on Oct 22, 2011 6:25 PM EDT up reply actions

IIRC (I can’t find my comments from back then when I actually posted the completely breakdown), he was -16 or so with GIrardi, -7 on the PP, and +3 otherwise.

While MDZ certainly contributed to the minus, the fact that it was mostly with Girardi is an indication that difficult competition levels (stuff above 3rd pair duties) are what really took their toll.

And anyone could figure out you don’t stick an 18 year old offensive-minded defensemen in difficult situations, and expect any level of success.

I’m ok with the +/- when offensive D are scoring. but as I stated above, I don’t think you’ll get that kind of production again and he will never be a reliable defensive defenseman as long as his skating deficiencies continue. he needs to learn how to skate in this league. you can get away with it in juniors and even the AHL but not here.

by Richter1994 on Oct 22, 2011 6:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe it’s time he got a lesson or 2 from Barbara Underhill. LOL

by EricBrat20 on Oct 22, 2011 6:38 PM EDT up reply actions

funny, but he needs to work with her for a long time.

by Richter1994 on Oct 22, 2011 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I know our defense is a lot weaker without Staal, but the people we’d have to move to pick up an “upper echelon” defenseman through trade, I just don’t want to. Especially for someone that will be an unrestricted free agent at the season’s end.

by Eastern Impact on Oct 22, 2011 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions

After reading that

I don’t want the team to make any moves for a top 4 D man especially if he is going to be a UFA at years end.. Than we have to start moving bodies in order to acquire Suter and I like the foundation they have going now. Like he said in the long haul it will be good for the younger guys McD, MDZ, and Erixon i’d hate to see any of those guys go. I haven’t given up on MDZ just yet the kid is still 21 and hasn’t done anything to bad so far this season, but thats why we have woyshitka and eminger around their expendable. Basically my point is when teams are faced with problems like this the good ones still find a way to in.

by ImMike88 on Oct 22, 2011 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions

If we could get a long term deal w/Suter

I would give up Zucc/MDZ/Christian Thomas and a high draft pick.

That sounds like too much...

just on firepower. This is a top 2 defensive defenseman, not a 20 goal scoring one. Wolski and MDZ with a first and a third sounds a lot better.

I think you’re under estimating Suter’s offensive ability. He had more points than any defense man that played for us last year, playing in only 70 games. In fact Drew Doughty had only one more point than him with 6 extra games played.

Staal Girardi
McD Sauer
Suter Erixon/McIlrath/Eminger/Slash anybody really

Depending on the progression of Erixon, that core above (pairings aside) is probably the best in the league with everybody entering the prime of their career.

by Zuppa Di Pesce on Oct 22, 2011 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Suter is exactly what the Rangers are lacking: an impact offensive D that has a great first pass coming out of the zone. MDZ is not the answer. Sorry.

Wait are arguing against me? We are in agreement i believe

Any idea why Bourque wasn’t in the lineup? I haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere.

Actually missed two in a row…going to do some google-sleuthing.

Obviously going to blow his SEL career high’s right out of the water. Hopefully he can keep up the pace, stay healthy, and have a tremendous year.

by Eastern Impact on Oct 22, 2011 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions

They need to get this guy in camp next season.

Possible steal of the 2010 draft right there. This kid is looking better and better each week.

Just read this, too. Something is up…I get that feeling when the Rangers got rid of Rosi last season.

He won't get out iof the hot tube according to Torts

I suspect that he’ll be traded for a dman sooner rather than later.

by graves9 on Oct 22, 2011 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions

He is

He’s a healthy scratch

by graves9 on Oct 22, 2011 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions

so what D is playing?

by Richter1994 on Oct 22, 2011 5:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Same top two pairs

with Bell paired with Eminger.

by graves9 on Oct 22, 2011 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Bell? Hmmm, I wonder why. Woy-whatever wasn’t terrible.

by Richter1994 on Oct 22, 2011 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Torts saying Woy-whatever has conditioning issues. now the switch makes sense.

by Richter1994 on Oct 22, 2011 6:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Imo he was

He really has no mobility and is not great with the puck.

by graves9 on Oct 22, 2011 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Bell is more of an offensive minded defenseman than Woy-Wawahoagie so he should be considerably better at controlling the puck. Now not saying he will be but just implying he should be.

by EricBrat20 on Oct 22, 2011 6:37 PM EDT up reply actions

6 of one, half dozen of another, lol
