New York Rangers Breaking News: Tim Erixon To Be Recalled To Play Friday

It's another busy morning in Ranger-land as rookie defenseman Tim Erixon is being recalled to the big club and will be flown out to Sweden to join the team. Erixon will practice with the Whale today and then fly out to Sweden to join the Rangers and start in the line up tomorrow.

The reason for Erixon being called up is that it is "expected" for Marc Staal (the words of the beat writers not mine) to be put on Injured Reserve (IR) today and could be out up to a month (here is the link to the Post article click here).

Marc Staal was diagnosed with concussion-like symptoms at the beginning of training camp and we all know how tricky and uncertain concussions can be

With Staal potentially being out for a month, the Rangers are going to give Tim Erixon a good look on the blue line as well as possibly bringing in former Ranger Paul Mara as a stop gap.

We'll have more details on this story as the day goes on so keep Blueshirt Banter open all day long and please try not to jump off the cliffs...the team hasn't played a game yet

Interesting

Glad to see Erixion get some time up w/ the big club, even under these circumstances. I always liked Mara……he was solid during his last year in a Rangers jersey. He was a beast the year after the lock-out w/ PHX. Did I read somewhere he and Torts do not mesh very well?

I also read somewhere Rangers possibly looking up in Toronto for a d-man……I know it’s speculation, but Franson wouldn’t be a bad option. He’s young though, not sure what Burke would ask for if it came down to it .

They just got Franson they are not trading him

by CrazyRangerFan on Oct 5, 2011 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Mistake?

Trying to be logical about this. If he was better than Bell and Bickell why did he get sent down? Must be concern about Sauer.

I just dont want to see him rushed. If it means coming in 7th in standings without him until Jan…so be it.

Again, if Sauer is a concern its all hands on deck and its a must do

by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Oct 5, 2011 10:14 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

I’m assuming Erixion was originally sent down just to get him acclimated to the PRO N. American game. Bell has been a pro for a while now, bouncing between the NHL/AHL since 2005. Bickel has been seasoned since 2008. I don’t mind Bell, Bickel, eh……

I do not think they intend on keeping him up here, but he’s probably the best option getting over to Europe for Friday’s opener. They will most likely have a different option, Mara (?), once they reach the States…..I could be wrong though, that’s why I don’t get paid the big bucks.

On whether Tortorella is comfortable with Bickel and Bell playing Friday if they have to: "I have my concerns, I gotta be honest with you. I have my concerns. I think Bicks had a very good camp. Last night, he really struggled. It was a real struggle for him. Bell’s been fair, but again, as a lot of teams are, trying to upgrade their D along the way here, and I don’t say that, again, put a negative (spin), but you always have to try to make your taem better, and we’re looking."

Defense orginizational depth

what happened to it? Do we have to draft another dman next year?

by Town on Oct 5, 2011 10:31 AM EDT reply actions

Our organizational depth doesn’t have anyone that can step into Staal’s place. We have a lot of guys that could be #1 dmen in a couple years, but they depth comments are related to the fact that there were potentially 5 guys that were vying for those last two places.

by Peter North Stars on Oct 5, 2011 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions

who is left in the minors that will be a potentially number one D?

McIIlrath and who else? He is a project that is still a few years away—valenenko, kudratek and bickel proved to be major disappointments. Depth means you have the ability to fill in for when people are hurt—now that Staal is out, we are scrambling

by Town on Oct 5, 2011 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions

How are Valentenko and Kundratek disappointments? Maybe they haven’t impressed tremendously but I don’t think they are lost causes.

by Zuppa Di Pesce on Oct 5, 2011 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions

?

ok, maybe one day they will be NHL players, but they do us no good now. Between del zotto, kundratek, valentenko, erixon, eminger and bickel, we thought we would have our defense well rounded out after the top 4—i don’t think we can be confident in ANY of those players now—-and not that Staal is out we are scrambling for sure and reaching outside the organization—that is not indicative of depth

by Town on Oct 5, 2011 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions

McDonagh is the other #1 in the making. Last year, he was part of the ‘depth’

The problem that arises is that the depth is still too young to fill anything higher than a 3rd pair role, and we’re scrambling for another guy in the top. That depth includes Valetenko, Kundratek, Parlett, and Bickel, behind the NHL-level guys, which includes Erixon and Del Zotto.

Who would have thought the Rangers would be down 1/3 of their defensive corp. coming out of camp (i.e. Staal and Sauer)? DelZotto, Erixon and McIlrath were in the pipeline. Gilroy was a one-dimensional d-man (with no powerful slap shot and a less offensive skill set than Del Zotto) who lacked size to clear the crease. The bigger disappointment was neither Valentenko and Kondretek, both highly touted, fell flat on their face during training camp this year.

by dar9898 on Oct 5, 2011 11:19 AM EDT reply actions

Just to clarify

for those of you asking about why Erixon was sent down and is now being called back up. Erixon outplayed Bickel and Bell, but third-pairing minutes would do little to help him at this point, so they wanted to get him 20+ minutes a night in the AHL.

Now, Tortorella can give him big minutes with the big club, so they may as well take him.

I didn’t see the Zug game, but were Bickel and Bell really that terrible? It was their 4 game in 5 nights and judging by the score most of the team was pretty tired. Could they have just had a bad night due to fatigue? Also, if Staal is going to be out for a month, does anyone else see value in trying to utilize the 9 game junior call up for McIlrath. The way the schedule works out, 9 games should cover almost the full month

by trav c on Oct 5, 2011 11:27 AM EDT reply actions

how do Playoff games factor into that junior call up?

i have no insight into what the team is thinking. But i think hes way too raw and we would be much better off waiting until the end of the season to call him up if anything. depending on injuries and fatigue, we may have a spot for him at that point. that way he gets to hone his craft in juniors and after he has another full season development in him, we can cash in those nine games and hope to catch lighting in a bottle. maybe he does well and helps a playof run. i can dream cant i?

by nhl21 on Oct 6, 2011 8:45 AM EDT up reply actions

I wish the guy the best but I still worry about the front of the net and physical play. It obvious that teams realize that tons of traffic in front of Lundqvist is the only way to score. Its an issue that has never really been resolved. I think Mara would help and Sauer missing is sore spot. I had been rooting for Valentenkno but I don’t think he was given a legit shot. I just take solace that McIlrath will be a fixture on the team and fill that physical void. Much love to Del Zotto for throwing his body around like he is twice his size.

by purinton on Oct 5, 2011 11:32 AM EDT reply actions

Best decision ever. There aren’t any quality D-men available for the cap space we have and if we were to go the trade route we’d sacrifice a prospect and that would set us back in the long term. This team isn’t going to win it this year so it best to give Erixson an opportunity even though it may have been in the Rangers best interest not to rush him like DelZotto.

by themessiah11 on Oct 5, 2011 11:39 AM EDT reply actions

Well with Erixon coming back this should make things interesting. Pairings I like are: mcd/girardi sauer/mdz eminger/Erixon and bell takes a seat in the comfortable press box.

I prefer:

MDZ/Girardi
Sauer/MCD
Eminger/Erixson

Girardi is our most responsible D and is best paired with MDZ wondering style.
I don’t want to break up the good thing we had going with the Sauer/MCD pairing last season.
Erixson will be placed with a vet and this E/E pairing ppl are probably least comfortable with will see 3rd pair ice time.

Amen. Not to mention that MDZ/Girardi pairing has been atrocious no matter what they’ve faced competition wise.

There is no question that McDonagh belongs with Girardi. In fact, I’m not sure that top pair will miss a beat, with due respect to Staal.

I put Erixon with Sauer to start and go for broke with the kid. If he struggles, you move Eminger up with Sauer. Then Eminger can cover up MDZ’s free-for-all.

D

A soft D gets softer with Erixon, he plays a good positional D game.. but way .to much poke checking and no touching…to many guys go around his poking then he pulls them down…passive D in front and along the boards…when he does use his body, he pushes or shoves…never finishes with a hard check…he has a lway to go before really being ready for the big club IMO.

I felt from day 1 in rookie Camp that Tim Erixon is a fit for this team and should be on it with or without staal. I feel he just needs a little more work , but the kid is ready to play in the NHL and shouldve been on the opening day roster before all of these moves started.

Sather comments on Staal via NY Posy

Doctors have said that it could be a week, but it could also be a month," Sather said of the No. 1 defenseman, who has been receiving treatment back home. "I wish we had something absolute, but we don’t.

"If Marc’s out for a substantial length of time, it’s going to have an impact on our club, no doubt about that. He’s our top defenseman, one of our top players, gets the most ice time and is always on against the other team’s top players.

"But it’s something we’ll just have to deal with."

by Gabby the Gutless Sniper on Oct 5, 2011 1:28 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

The reason for Erixon being called up is that it is “expected” (the words of the beat writers not mine) to be put on Injured Reserve (IR) today and could be out up to a month (here is the link to the Post article click here).

You might want to put Staal’s name in there after your first set of parentheses.

Look at me. Correcting grammar? This student teaching thing is rubbing off on me.

So perfect that you are beyond punctuation and the capitalization of proper nouns.

TAKE THAT GRAMMAR.
