New York Rangers Breaking News: Rangers claim Jeff Woywitka Off Waivers From Montreal
According to reports, the New York Rangers have claimed defenseman Jeff Woywitka off of waivers from the Montreal Canadiens. The 28-year-old Canadian born defensemen has played with Brad Richards when both were in Dallas.
With the addition of Woywitka, the Rangers have some options now as they have nine active defensemen on the roster. My prediction is that one of, if not both, Brendan Bell and Stu Bickel are reassigned to the minors after the two European games this weekend.
For those wondering, Woywitka's cap hit is $650,000 against the Rangers cap, with Montreal paying half of his salary.
This also puts an end to any speculation of Paul Mara signing with the Rangers, despite rumors circulating that the Rangers were looking at him as a replacement while Marc Staal is out. Woywitka also brings a veteran presence to the locker room, something the Rangers were looking for with Mara, at a much cheaper price.
Thoughts guys?

Cross posting from the other thread
54% offensive zone starts, terrible Corsi even before adjusting, against weak competition, and got tremendous goaltending while he was on the ice to keep his +/- up.
I’m not sure he’s an upgrade to Bell, let alone Eminger and Del Zotto. On the brightside, he improved from the 09-10 season.

I figure he won’t be around the big club for long and that he’ll be spending time with the AHL

you think?
I think he is going to take Erixon’s place and will be with the Rangers all season—he immediately jumps ahead of Erixon, bickel and Bell
Comparable metrics with Eminger (OZone, Corsi, QUALCOMP)…Woywitka’s GVT is slightly higher. He can step in for Eminger if need be.

Who?
Never heard of this guy.
I don’t really know anything about this guy except that he played for STL and DAL. Question is, is he an upgrade to a guys like Bell or Bickel?

Cheap add on… I know we talked about this but no one wants McCabe anymore and i still think hes got it. last season we coundnt judge him because our offense was terrible. Get him for cheap somehow n I bet his rocket would be great to have…then again this doesn’t matter cause its never happening. just saying

meh agreed
The only thing this guy has going for him is his # of NHL games played. I’m sure torts is concerned about the lack of experience on his D right now.
It seems like
we have revolved the team around Richards now coincidentally. Feds, JW, Torts…who’s next lol Not saying that’s a bad thing.

Re-entry Waivers?
It looks like Woywitka was waived by Montreal only yesterday. So this was not re-entry waivers, meaning the Rangers are paying his full salary and taking the full cap hit for Woywitka.
Montreal is not paying half his salary. This was not a re-entry waivers claim.

But the cap hit/salary is correct. $650k cap hit.

I'm glad we didn't get Mara.......
….never liked him. He was too slow and not great at hitting or clearing the crease.
I don’t know much about Woywitka. Is he physical? He’s listed at 6’2" 225, so he won’t get pushed around.
focus more on what happens after 35 seconds in....
…..he kinda got his ass kicked by Simmonds here, but my point in showing it is he seems to be willing to dish out the hits and finish hard; something Mara didn’t ever really do and something McCabe is too slow to do.
and here is another reason we couldn't have Mara on the team this year:
At least, you might not want to put Rupp’s locker next to Mara’s…
Not crazy about it but certainly don’t hate it.
Not a bad player, I don’t know what people expected us to get on the waiver wire but Woywitka is almost as good as it gets given the time of year and all the other factors.
A little more depth, one more option, why the hell not?
Solid.

Forget about the waiver wire, in reality, who can we trade for that would make an impact without giving too much up? I don’t think there is much to trade for without giving up a significant prospect or draft picks. Especially when the draft next year is supposed to be good.
