Thornton says Rangers " Softest Team They Played"
So last night after a complete performance by the rangers which i sadly missed, Joe Thornton decides to talk some trash. Now we all get that his team was on its final game of a long east coast road trip and those could be difficult (ask the rangers about long trips ) , but that shouldn't be the reason to trash talk about our team after completely dismantling you with their backup goaltender in net. This is also coming from a guy who is one of the softest centers in the league. You can call Joe Thornton alot of things but delusional is not one of them. Remember when he told a reporter "I still think we are the better team" after the Sharks were swept in the West Conference finals in 2010. Yea Joe your comments are definitely taken seriously!!
Join me for more after the jump.
After the San Jose Sharks lost to the New York Rangers, 5-2, on Monday night, Thornton said (via CSN Bay Area's Kevin Kurz):
Their performance against the Rangers was their worst of the trip, and it was a game that they should have won fairly easily, if you believe the captain.
"To be honest with you, they were probably the softest team we played against on this road trip," said Joe Thornton. "We played some good teams, and I think we probably should have beat these guys, to be honest with you."
Thornton was probably being a little more blunt than usual. The Sharks and Rangers won't meet again this season, and his comment isn't going to show up on any bulletin boards in the newly renovated locker room at Madison Square Garden.
"Thornton is saying the Rangers are softer than the Devils, the Bruins, the Predators, the Red Wings and the Islanders "
Sadly the Rangers wont be playing the Sharks again this year unless we both make it to the Stanley Cup Finals. In this day and age anything can happen, just look at the the STL Cardinals who won the world series with being 12 games back of a playoff spot with less then a month left in the season.( I think)
This is also something that Captain Cally should put in the locker room to help inspire the boys for the rest of the season.
I will also be at the game on Thursday against the Ducks.

I agree, the one word response says a lot. It means Torts knows what kind of team he’s got and doesn’t care what anyone else thinks.
No, he doesn't think NYR are soft
He put it pretty plainly that Thornton is a whiner.
"Lopez wants it away, and it's hit deep to left center, Andruw Jones on the run, this one has a chance... home run!, Mike Piazza!, and the Mets lead 3 to 2!"
He’s just whining because the Rangers had 3 unanswered goals against them. If he should be upset with any one it should be himself and his team for not playing hard enough against a “soft team”. You didn’t see the Rangers crying when they blew a 3 goal lead to Ottawa the other night. They sucked it up, made adjustments and came back to kick in the teeth of one of the top teams on the West Coast. So SUCK IT THORTON!
He also backpedaled already, saying soft was the wrong word to use.

torts' retort:
John Tortorella did not appreciate Sharks captain Joe Thornton calling the Rangers soft after the Blueshirts defeated San Jose, 5-2, Monday night. Not one bit.
"Yeah it caught me off-guard when it was brought up after the game," Tortorella said at the team’s Greenburgh practice facility Tuesday morning. "It surprised me, and I’ve never heard a player say that. Joe’s a heck of a player, but here’s a player popping off about our team, and Joe hasn’t won a g—damn thing in this league. He could go down as a player, being one of the better players in our league never to win anything. So what he should do is just shutup. It was uncalled for, it was classless, and I’ve never had it happen like that before."

Now, I love this.
"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

Joe Thornton talking about toughness? Where’s his been all his freakin career? not to mention the disappearing acts he has during the playoffs. the Sharks got rid of one choker in Heatley but couldn’t dismantle the regular season team by getting rid of Thornton too. Seriously, the underachievers say crap like this, not the real winners in sports. They’re whiners instead of winners. What a sore loser.
Joe's brain is soft from being such a tough guy on the ice

I love how Torts ripped him, and I bet Torts could get on skates right now and whoop thorntons ass just for good measure
I listen to Enter Sandman before taking exams. I wear the exact same jersey every Giants game. The Rangers goal song goes off in my head when I achieve small successes in life.

I dislike Thornton to begin with after he robbed Jagr of the MVP in 2005-2006. This just cements it. What will Thornton be remembered as if he does not win a cup? A big Adam Oates? At least Oates passed the 40 goal mark…

You nailed it! Plus, Thornton only had two more overall points than Jagr that year. I could see if the overall points difference was huge…Either way, Jagr was a game-changer and a winner. I can’t really say that about Joe Thornton.
Not what I meant. Yeah, Oates hit 40 goals (once, right before the trap era). Thornton got 90+ assists twice, a much more prestigious club.
Thornton is definitely a game changer. Have you not noticed that his arrival in San Jose coincides exactly with their status as “contender”? Before that they were like the Rangers, low playoff team but a Cup longshot.
Hockey is a team sport. Jagr won twice, 20 years ago. Not relevant history IMO.

Sure hockey is a team sport. But Jagr can change a game by himself. You can consider the Sharks contenders all that you’d like but there was never a doubt in most NHL fans’ minds that the team would inevitably fail. And that failure is directly linked to Joe Thornton.
so because you like to play
20/20 hindsight and say you knew all along that the Sharks would inevitably fail (if the Sharks are failures, what the fuck does that make our team?), but the fact that the Sharks have been one of the more dominant teams in the NHL for the better part of a decade speaks for itself. Sure, they haven’t won a stanley cup, it’s super hard to win one of those, but that fact doesn’t somehow validate your outrageous statement that Thornton isn’t a game changer. It’s funny to me how Thornton says some stupid shit and people immediately start trying to poke holes in his career as a player. You can dislike the guy while simultaneously being aware of his prodigious talent. He can be a whiner, or a douche, or whatever, but he is a damn good player.
The definition of a “good” player is arbitrary and subjective because there are variables beyond the stat sheet. Even the guys on here that full-supporters of statistics as a means of “scientific” evidence to determine if a player is “good” or not realize that there is some leeway in that. Its not the type of guy I would build a team around. And I think you are correct when you say he is a damn “good” player but not “great.” There is much more to that.
And there was no 20/20 hindsight on the Sharks losing ways, mainly because most people knew Nabokov would end up exactly where he should be, a back-up for the Islanders. I am sorry if I offended the team that you root for once the Rangers get knocked out or don’t make it and obviously one of your favorite players.
sorry for my language, but what a f'n bitch
