Rangers Vs. Hurricanes: Explosive Third Period Gives Rangers Sixth Straight Win
You want to talk about a game? The New York Rangers earned their sixth straight win tonight with a 5-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes. The Rangers tallied four goals in the final ten minutes of the third period, and flew past the Hurricanes.
Sean Avery had a heck of a game tonight, and even got the Rangers on the board first with an beauty of a goal. Avery was able to speed past the stumbling defenseman, waited him out as he fell and roofed it over the shoulder of Cam Ward. If Sean Avery can play like that every night, it would make this Rangers team that much better.
Speaking of Avery, he drew two penalties in the second period, back-to-back. Anyone else see the signs of the Avery from the past? However, the Hurricanes were able to get things all tied up at one, with a goal coming from Alexei Ponikarovsky.
Follow after the jump for more.
Mid-way through the third period, the Rangers unleashed havoc on the Hurricanes. Eric Staal was whistled down for high sticking, and the MSG crowd let Staal hear it. Staal was hounded all night by the crowd after his hit on Marc last season, which is currently sidelining him. The Rangers would have an eventual 27 seconds power play and they converted. The Rangers did everything right on this short power play, and were very patient. Brad Richards made an unbelievable pass over the Girardi who beat the sprawling Cam Ward.
They weren't done just yet, Brandon Dubinsky notched his first goal of the season just 9 seconds later. Dubinsky looked up to the heavens after he was finally able to break his scoring drought, and the "DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUB" chants came raining down at MSG.
Just about three minutes later, Ryan Callahan was able to pounce on a rebound off of a Michael Sauer shot. There was a mad scramble and Cally was able to find the puck and notch his seventh goal of the season. Oh just wait, there is still one more goal. Five minutes later, Cam Ward made a lazy play behind the net and Brad Richards was able to wrap it into an empty net. Ward never even saw Richards coming, and was stunned when it was in the net, that made it 5-1 Rangers.
Henrik Lundqvist had another solid performance tonight between the pipes, and made a couple HUGE saves to keep the Rangers in it. The Rangers are cruising right now, and are finally clicking. This team is offensively powerful when they get rolling, as we've seen over the last six games. This win currently puts the Rangers 2 points out of first place, since the Penguins were able to win 3-1 tonight. Overall a solid game, and an even better third period to get the win.
Here are tonight's three stars of the game, and your recipient of the Broadway Hat.

Great Win
Wish I could have watched it. Had a much needed date night out with the wife, so I’m very appreciative for the write-up. (Yes, I know, let the ripping begin…)

Date night for me too! Groomsman who had to cancel coming to my wedding last month took us out. You guys may recall that my wedding cancelled the day before, because of the stupid hurricane. Not everyone could make the rescheduled date.
Congratulations, Big B
Let me know how that works out for you . . .

Missed the game due to work, but I was following the score. 1-1 after two, then bham! We are finally getting the consistency we have been seeking. Consistently winning. I knew with the skill and talent we have that they just needed a shot of confidence. Now we have that confidence. During the off season, this is exactly how I thought we would play this season. 9-3-3. LGR.

Highlights are up already on the NHL site incase any of you haven’t seen them yet. Avery’s goal was excellent and Richards’ no look pass was a thing of beauty. Hopefully Dubi can take off now and get some more goals now that he got his first! Lets make it 7 in row! LGR!

Typically, yes. Immediately after a game, not really. Sometimes they don’t end up on the NHL website til the next morning.
okay, just wanted to make sure you guys knew because it that section really is handy when you miss the game

I’m pretty neutral when it comes to Avery. I dont love him, but I dont hate him. Tonight was a good example of how he needs to play. Focus on the game, not the bullshit. Enough people will target him purely because he’s Avery. He doesn’t need to walk the penalty line himself to draw penalties. Hopefully we can see more games like the one he had tonight.

Another great game to be at
Our boys are playing with heart. Very fun to watch as they take 6 in a row. The boo birds were out early going after Staal which I was indifferent about.
Good for Avery for roofing the sh*t out of that shot and getting over 10 mins tonight. He skated hard.
VERY under appreciated game by Hank as he stopped 35 of 36 shots but was not a star.
Also nice to see scoring from everyone else not on the GAS line.
Great D by Eminger and Woywitka, I know they are not ideal but they don’t make mistakes very often which is huge. They can hold their own back there. Have faith.
Last home game for a while which is a bummer (oh wait, never-mind, they are on long island soon). Actually they have a lot of off days coming up this next week and a half. Hopefully the Rangers 21 points stands tall in the standings. They are playing great hockey and are a joy to watch this year so far.
Can’t wait for Torts to make Bruce fatboy look like Santa Claus on 24/7.

There was a play, i forget who set him up, but Del Zotto just missed wide on a tip in, and then a very similar miss by Gaborik off a Stepan pass. Those are just 2 that I remember specifically.

it was a pretty even game up until the last 10 mins of the 3rd when the Rangers went off. Both goalies had to make good saves early on that NHL on the fly wont always show

Aves/Dubi
I loved Avery tonight, of course, but I disagree that it was the Avery of old. The old Avery would’ve scored perhaps, but he’d draw penalties by goading or baiting an opponent like an a**, not out of speed or hustle. THIS Sean Avery I could learn to actually appreciate. Hopefully, it continues.
As for Scuuubi, Duuubi, Dubinsky….my favorite part was actually his end-to-end rush that he commanded just minutes b4 he scored. When he went behind the net, I yelled: “C’mon Dubi. Let’s go! It’s time!” And boy did he ever listen. THAT’s the Brandon I love. A guy who wants to take things into his own hands and make a difference. And someone who can actually DU that, ta boot. The goal was just reward for him having the proper mindset he clearly needs to have. Good for him! :)
You’re right, seeing Dubi make that end to end play just made me want to be able to cheer for a goal for him. Glad he potted one tonight.

Carolina
can blame Eric Staal for this loss. He took a very ill advised high sticking penalty on our boy Danny G, (who poetically scored on the subsquent short PP) cancelling their own PP. Who knows, maybe it would’ve gone the other way had Carolina scored on theirs instead.
And I’m glad Dubi got his goal. With his play tonight, I think he is back to playing like he should. Gaborik is beastly, even when he doesn’t score. Love watching him shoot one timers, the puck is off his stick even before it gets to him, he shoots it that quick. Hank had a “quiet” 35 tonight.

Rangers FTW!

That penalty really was when it all fell apart for them. Reading a few Canes’ message boards it seems like a lot of their fans want both the coach and Staal gone.
As for Gaborik, I’m not sure why we don’t look to set him up for more one timers on the PP. Seems like everyone is just too focused on giving him or Richards the puck instead of making a decision themselves.
by Eastern Impact on Nov 12, 2011 1:55 AM EST up reply actions
Exactly!
I agree re: one-timers and not just Gabby, although his is the best. MDZ can do it, McD, even BR. But those guys all seem to think puck reception 1st and only once this year, that early Gabby PP goal from Step, can I recall a guy on our PP having his stick cocked and ready to go with the puck coming to him. And look at that, MG scored!
They def. need to use that option more. :)
Puck reception first, that’s exactly the way to describe it. It’s like look look pass look look look pass look pass look look shoot. It’s almost painful to watch. Just have Gabby sit in the bottom right circle cocked and waiting to attract a defender and if no one covers him, well then it’s a free one timer. Christensen actually took a one timer from over there a few games ago, and i was really surprised at how hard his shot was.

This was the best way to avenge our Staal
didn’t fight or headhunt him. Beat him the right way….embarrassing his team on the ice by outscoring them :)

this past week is the team I have been dying to see
i knew it was there, we were just in a early season funk and now everyone and I mean everyone is clicking that is important
if this team plays at anywhere near this level this season it may be some time to make some noise boys and girls
see the Rangers built this team finally the right way, all of our young guys are completely talented studs
sick part is they are all still growing and getting better
Gaborik is back to the player we signed a few years ago, Richards is a legit playmaker we lacked
we haven’t even had Staal and this d is just playing great
Henrik is the best goalie in the NHL, yeah I said it
i truly believe this team, if they play this way at somewhat close to this level is a legit contender
so happy and excited right now about this team, years and i mean years I have been waiting for this, I think we are really a contender now
and Derek Stepan is legit dude, legit playmaker and we still got all that young talent in the pipeline
this is f’n awesome

Avery
tonight he played the way I always wanted him to play
hard working, physical, smart hockey
he is always going to get the opposing team baited into making a penalty on him, for the love of sweet glen sather why was he not on the team earlier? if he plays hard like that Avery seriously gives this team a boost and edge
that goal he scored was amazing, he may only score 10 a year but damn I will take it
Christensen is still a piece of hot garbage on skates
we pair up the Prust Boyle Avery line, thats the line I like most with those 3 or maybe Feds somewhere in there too
the thing is we have 2 seriously legit lines, a good third line, and that fourth line does their job
if we could dump Christensen I would really like this team so much more, and as much as I think Wolski is talented he is just not working out, i thought he would be a secondary scorer but he’s just not
AA-Stepan-Gabs
Dubi-Richards-Cally
Prust-Boyle-Avery
alternate Feds in
could care less about the 4th line because its just not as important but just do your job and its cool with me on the 4th line, Id rather run 3 lines and alternate Feds in
then the defense is f’n solid right now, McD is studly, Girardi has his haters and they can suck his balls because the dude is so underrated
Jeff Woywikipedia is solid, f’n Del Zotto is f’n back, Sauer is a G
I love this team
I know its early and its a win streak and I am being a homer I know but goddamn this is the team I have been absolutely dying to see

How about the fact that the Rangers…yes our New York Rangers had 40 shots tonight! I can’t remember the last time that happened!
"and they're on their feet at the Garden"
Avery, Dubi, and Gaby had very strong games last night. The D was pretty good though MDZ committed the gaffe by going to a man that was not in the play that opened up the alley that directly led to the goal. Other than that he was fine defensively. The teams were pretty even the first 2 periods as the SOGs were pretty even throughout. The 3rd was the difference as our team just exploded by driving to the net. Very, very happy for Dubi. His reaction told the whole story.
Yup
I was thinking that too re: MDZ. I’m like: “Nooooo, Michael, don’t pinch!” And bamm, it costs us. But still, he’s playing very well overall this year, as is the team, so tough to knock him on that one play given we responded very well. :)
ever since the Leafs’ home opener which was a nightmare for MDZ, he has played very well. It’s too bad about the goal he gave up and the tap in he should have had gift-wrapped by Gaby but he has played very well. Staal not be a participant this year (my opinion) so they need all the D to play well. Emmy and Woywitka were very good last night. Woywitka’s outlet passes were crisp and accurate.
BTW, forget about ever including Girardi in any trade for any player because he has reached “untouchable” trade status, IMO. Having 7 hits last night is insane considering the number of minutes he plays and the way he plays. No disrespect to Cally but Girardi is the “de facto” Captain right now. He and the King have been the MVPs of the season thus far and it’s not even close.
Girardi, like Gaborik, is currently playing at a level that was not previously considered possible. Nobody expected Gaborik to play better than he did in 09-10, and there were times when we considered trading Girardi (given the logjam on D that we’ll have once Erixon and McIlrath are ready). With Girardi showing he doesn’t need Staal to flourish, McDonagh showing he can handle and excel against top competition, and MDZ earning his second-pairing spot (both O and D), we’ll most definitely have a stacked defense once Staal is back in the lineup. Eminger will become the sixth til one of Valentenko/Erixon/McIlrath make the jump, then he’s back to the press box.
The question now becomes, however, who do we end up shipping out in a trade if it’s not Girardi? I mean with Staal, Girardi, McD, Sauer, MDZ, Erixon, and McIlrath we have 7 defensemen who are (or supposed to be) very good.
don’t trade any of em..
:)
"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
you trade others like Dubi, Cally, Kreider, picks, etc for a guy like Weber. I would gladly trade MDZ in a package for Weber so let’s not get nuts that he is Weber’s equivalent. Not even close. But basically you don’t trade anyone at this point unless it’s for a game changer, basically a top 10 to top 15 player. I think what we have now is fine though we are still lacking that big shot on the point during the PP. as an offset to not having that big shot you move the puck quickly like they did against the Canes instead of that slow as molasses passing they do when they’re in that easy to defend umbrella they usually display on the PP. That produces nothing. The PP right now is by far and away their biggest problem. And it’s a biggie if they are going to do anything this year in the playoffs.
Right now I think Girardi is my favorite Ranger and one of the top d-men in the league. For at least three years now, whenever we have faced injuries on the backline or rough spells as a team, Girardi is the one who has held down the fort. He’s absolutely epitomized the sacrifice and commitment to team hockey that define us as a club.
I’m telling you, he’s one of the most under-rated players in the NHL and like Torts said, he deserves a ballot nomination.
absolutely correct. Girardi is not flashy. he was an undrafted signing. Torts is correct in bashing the league. My friend has a friend that works in the league office and he confirmed what I have thought for years: The league HATES the Rangers. HATES the Rangers. The league never forgave them for the Sakic offer sheet that changed the landscape of salaries, the way the Rangers threw $$ at FAs that resulted in the hard cap, and the way the Rangers have so much influence that they do not always tow the “company line” when it comes to marketing, etc. Bettman hates them. It’s what I have thought for a # of years but never could prove it. Not surprisingly, the “darlings” of the league are the Pens, Flyers, and Wings.
Ok I can understand why the Pens and Wings are league darlings but the Flyers? They are one of the dirtiest teams in the league. They cheap shot and run goalies like it nobody’s business.
Girardi had 24.5 minutes last night. Which is good. Need more large leads to give our top 2 D a rest at the end of games. It’s great having a 3-4 goal lead, so he is not on the ice to protect a 1 goal lead every other shift. Also takes some pressure off of Hank. Like to have a larger lead earlier in the game, but I’ll take the 4 in the third. They are playing great. Everyone pitched in last night. Feeling confident about this team.
