Anyone upset now that we didn't get Sheldon Souray last year?

The guy is putting up a spectacular start to the season, this is his stat line through 16 games: Goals: 4 Assists: 9 Points: 13 +/-:+9 PIM:31 Hits: 11 Blocked Shots: 21 PPG: 2 PPA: 2 SHG: 1 GWG: 1 The guy is a 1.65 million cap hit. Is anyone upset now that he isn't wearing the Rangers sweater? I know I am. Glen Sather usually goes after the reclamation projects around the league I am suprised he didn't take a shot on Souray.

disagree totally

i always thought souray got a bum deal in edm. with stall out he could be filling a big role for us with minimal cap hit/risk and be teaching our OD how to play their role correctly

Who gives a hoot what he’s doing at the beginning of the season, fact is he’s old, injury prone and he still sucks. He’ll fall back down to earth eventually. Super glad we don’t have his scrub ass.

Wade Redden…Sheldon Souray… We already have our reclamation project. He just happens to be rotting in Hartford.

by Free2beljg on Nov 15, 2011 12:42 PM EST reply actions

Agreed AND...

…even worse, unlike WR, SS was a complete, winy a** when he was sent down by EDM whereas Redden at least has reportedly been a positive influence for the Whale D.

Points schmoints, SS has shown himself to be a locker-room cancer…

No thank you! :(

You guys know

the idea that you can change your opinion on something when presented with new information? Just because a lot of you stupidly said he had no value last year doesn’t mean you have try to maintain that opinion now that he has clearly shown he isn’t done and can still play. If there is one thing about these SBnation sites I don’t like, it’s the idea that every player that isn’t a Knick or a Ranger is a scrub that couldn’t be useful for us. Just because a guy doesn’t play for our home team doesn’t mean they aren’t good. I absolutely guarantee that if Souray was on our team every single one of you would be raving about his resurgence, what a wonderful addition he has been, and how he has really strengthened our power play. But nope, he is on another team, so he is a stupid bum piece of shit, right guys?

by nrmax88 on Nov 15, 2011 1:50 PM EST reply actions

you can guarantee all you want, but that doesn’t mean anything. Hell, if you want a guarantee, I can take a dump in a box and mark it “guaranteed”… I mean, I got spare time.

Fact is, there is NO guarantee that he would be doing the same thing in NY, as he is in Dallas. Circumstances are different and there are too many factors to consider, to just say “he would be tearing it up here”. The chances are equally as good that he would have failed here due to chemistry, system, or even just an injury that could have occurred here, but didn’t in Dallas.

Every moment of his season is different because he is where he is. Every moment of his season would have been different in some way had he been in NY. We’re not talking about a generational talent here, like Ovi or Crosby, who would tear it up anywhere.

Souray was a gamble – hence his contract. We chose not to gamble, and I don’t mind that at all.

by j-red on Nov 15, 2011 2:12 PM EST up reply actions

i dont either, but im not going to sit here and say

he sucks, just because i didnt want him at the deadline last year and am too stubborn to change an opinion. I’m not saying that we had to have him, just that I find it nearly impossible to believe that if he were producing in NY like he is right now in Dallas, that the people in here dogging him as a scrub or an old bum would be ripping him as such. More likely they would be drooling over him.

by nrmax88 on Nov 15, 2011 2:33 PM EST up reply actions

I think I’ve established pretty well I don’t form baseless or homer-based opinions.

-I get that his boxscores look good, but he leaks shots as bad as any defenseman in the league so far.
-The rumors were never about signing him, only about trading for him.
- Dallas has all the looks of the team that played well out of the gate last year and then crashed and burned when the underlying stuff caught up with them.

Thus, I’m not buying his start as anything more than a hot streak. Obviously it’s a nice looking hot streak, but I don’t regret for a second that it didn’t come in our games.

Looks like a horrible PDO ran him out of the league, and don’t overlook that abysmal zone start.

I thought he needed a change of scenery and he would have at leaat done what Mc Cabe did…..which was pretty much nothing.

Absolute Worst Ranger Fan!!!!!!....yet incredibly realistic and usually correct.

by earthworm on Nov 15, 2011 1:54 PM EST reply actions

Umm…no.

Souray’s is an offensive D with a good shot and a mean streak. Defensively he’s fairly useless. Yeah, he’s got 4 goals. Whoopty-doo, McDonagh and Girardi have 3 goals each, and they’re rocking 25+ MPG as our top shutdown pair. Also, our defense was pretty set in terms of what it was going to look like coming into this year with the exception of the 6th man.

No way Souray comes here on THAT contract. If Sather signed him, it’d be for 4 years at 3 per, at least, not 1 year at 1.65.

Also, in Dallas, he’s their top guy, so he’s bound to collect a good deal of points, especially on the PP. He’s also playing for 1 more good contract before he retires (he’ll be 36 next year, so there’s a chance if he plays really well for this year, somebody will throw 3 years 3.5m or so at him, and he’ll wind up being shitty).

Short answer: nope.

Too much of a risk, hindsight is 20/20. The guy is old and supposedly was a locker room cancer in Edmonton. He may have one hell of a shot but defensively he leaves a lot to be desired.

No

while he may be putting up decent offensive numbers (which tend to regress for defensemen) his defense has been lack luster at best and that’s the last thing we need

Just wait for his injury or 60 games in when he’s outta gas.

by teknics on Nov 15, 2011 10:18 PM EST via mobile reply actions

No.

I mean do I prefer him over Woywitka or Eminger, since he would help with the depth, but I’m not upset that we don’t have him. I mean for 1 year, 1.65 mil, I might have not really minded it, Staal being out of the line up somewhat influences that, but I really don’t care that we didn’t get him.

Proudly suffering as a Ranger fan.

by Tripodi on Nov 15, 2011 11:17 PM EST reply actions

No

No room for him here in NY. Same situation with McCabe, no room.

I was not big on the idea of trading for Souray at the time of the rumors. I didn’t want to see another veteran sucking up big money, that is injury prone to boot. Plus, we would’ve had to give up players for him.

I was more interested (and still am) in signing Commodore for depth and JAM.

I wouldnt say upset. it would have been worth it to take a shot on him, but who knew what you were going to get. we seem to be doing ok with our spare parts, and they are cost effective as well!

I agree with NYC Jim...

not upset. Yea, it would have worked out. But if we had gone for Souray it would really indicate a shift in GM philosophy. I like the way we’re building the club. For every one guy that might work out, 3 fail to live up to their potential. I think he was shy after that McCabe move. But it would be nice to have him until Staal comes back.
