The Play Of Marian Gaborik: Blueshirt Banter Talks To Jim Schoenfeld
Thursday we talked about the growth of Ryan McDonagh in the absence of Marc Staal and how his game has helped the New York Rangers to success this season. But another player who is getting quite a bit of attention, deservedly so, due to a rejuvenated season is Marian Gaborik.
Gaborik, who struggled to just 22 goals last season, already has nine goals and six assists on the year, and despite not scoring in his past two games the sniper has looked as dangerous as ever.
The marriage between Brad Richards and Gaborik didn't work in the beginning but Rangers assistant general manager and assistant coach Jim Schoenfeld doesn't think it's a matchup dead in the water.
"At first we had him playing with Brad Richards which we thought on paper might work," he said. "You have a great center and a great shooter and it really didn't work right away. That doesn't mean we can't revisit it and it doesn't mean that it might not work in the future either. But it didn't have the chemistry we thought it would."
Join me after the jump for more.
So John Tortorella started juggling Gaborik's centers. First it was Erik Christensen, then it was Brandon Dubinsky and now he's on a line with Derek Stepan and Artem Anisimov, a line which has shown tremendous chemistry and has produced fantastic results.
Schoenfeld was impressed with Gaborik's ability to still be productive without Richards on his line.
"Through it all Gaborik kept getting his goals and he kept getting his points whether he was playing with Richards or not," he said. "He was finding other ways to score. His entire game, his focus is clearer, his decision making offensively have been effective. He's not shooting when he should be skating, he's not passing when he should be shooting."
Gaborik's play hasn't just improved in the offensive zone. He's stepped up all over the ice.
"Everything seems to be the right decision, and his game has become complete too," Scheonfeld said. "He's made some great plays for us defensively. He has been blocking shots, winning board battles, making sure the puck gets out. His entire game from last year has dramatically improved and our fortunes as a team improved because of that."

#1 Center for Gaborik
All that talk of needing a top line center for Gaborik was overstated. The guy, when on, creates his own chances and is a top 10 talent in the league. I think his down season helped BR get a lot more love from the Rangers, who thought he was the answer to Gabby’s down season. As we can see, GABBY is the answer to his own down season. Not that I don’t like BR on this team, but as you state, and as George’s numbers showed earlier, Marian Gaborik is going to drive this team’s offense not Brad Richards.
Manning lobs it, Burress alone, touchdown New York!
For the empty net, Mark Messier... do you believe it?! Do you believe it?! He said we will win game 6 - he has just picked up the hat trick!
We still needed Richards though...
We needed to round out the lines with more talent. With Richards we can have 2 scoring lines, and he’ll still produce a ppg with out Gabby on his line. That’s huge, and something we haven’t had in a while.
I agree
Just think that the argument that getting Richards to fix Gaborik was silly. Gabby can drive play himself. Having BR with Dubi & Cally is fantastic. I’m starting to believe this team can contend soon.

i love it too
but i’ve always thought that if we could use a couple pack line members on the third line and get one more very good forward for our second line, we would be set. Now that anisimov is proving he can play on the first line, I’m thinking something like this:
anisimov-step-gabby
forward-richards-callahan
dubi-boyle-feds
prust-Rupp-avery/deveaux
I got hated on last time I suggested this because i forgot Prust, but this makes sense too me for some reason. Cally adds grit and skill to the second line and keeps him from playing too much off a style that gets him hurt all the time.
@btown46
we already have "forward"
his name is Mats Zuccarello
maybe
but Zucc seems more like a Stepan – playmaker type. Hopefully Kreider, Thomas or Hagelin can fill that “forward” spot if there’s nothing on the market.

I can see this
With Avery & Wolski coming off the books this year, that $5M in cap space for that forward. We’ll see who’s out there but I’d like to see one more scorer in this line up.

its closer to 6 mil from those two...
not to mention the buy out from dru goes down by 2 mil next season. cap geek has us close to 17 mil and we only have to resign MDZ (plus biron and prust/feds if we want) we will have enough to go after a legit top-6 talent again this offseason if we want. pray that the devils bomb and praise hits the open market. add him to the top 6 and drop AA to the third line and we’re more than a contender, we could be a favorite

This is a little bit short sighted. Right now, we have a pretty legitimate top 6 that have not topped out yet. Next year we do not have a lot of RFA/UFAs to resign but the following 2 seasons after that, we do. A player like Parise is going to want $7m and a long term contract. It is worth giving up one of our good players, but not jeopardizing 3 or so.
i agree
and building from within is working. But there is a tendency here (and on most fan discussion boards) to overvalue prospects and talent levels. Kreider and Thomas are excellent prospects but there is no guarantee that that they will be legit top-6 forwards let alone superstars like parise- and if that is the last piece of the puzzle to win it all, i think we should do it. I’m not saying you do the deal without thinking, however if singing him to a 7 mil cap hit contract means down the line you might have to sacrifice resigning the likes of a AA or Sauer or are forced to move a contract like girardi’s (not immediately but somewhere down the line) it still might be worth doing. this team, as hot as they are, is still lacking one more top-6 talent to be able to truly contend… with a parise-level player you know what you are getting, with prospects you never do.
cap era contracts are a balancing act, and with the youth we have on D their total cap should remain manageable for a while, so it might be time to go all in and splurge on another talent to push us over the edge.
by the way, I’m not convinced this would be the correct path and it certainly could be too shortsighted. its just one way I’ve thought about it. there is also the problem that Parise allegedly hates the rangers, loves the devils and is wearing the C for them right now, so the likelihood of him accepting an offer from us is very low
by BronxBeliever on Nov 19, 2011 1:42 PM EST up reply actions
I see-saw between what I wrote above, and wanting to get a $5-7m legit first line LW. The problem with signing Parise or the likes, is that it probably wouldn’t cost us AA or Sauer or Girardi, it would probably cost us like all 3.
you maybe right, and perhaps its too high a price to pay. but assuming that McD and MDZ continue their ascension, and Erixon and McIlrath work out, Girarardi an Sauer might be forced out eventually anyway. On top of that, if one of Kreider, Thomas or JT Miller becomes what we all hope they can be, they are a cheaper alternatives to AA after the contract he is playing on now ends. It would be a gamble, no doubt, but having parise, gaborik, richards, stepan, dubs and cally is an extremely talented and well rounded top-6.

I don't necessarily "disagree"...
but AA and Step are definitely a big factor with Gaborik’s resurgence. Not to say he isn’t his own catalyst, (as we’ve seen in the past you could put him on a line with Eric “Mickey Mouse” Christensen and he produces) but I think it was those two + Gaborik surging back from his down year to be the forward we all knew he could be.
Mats Zuccarello
I Challenge anyone to fit Zucc into the line up, and thus create 3 lethal scoring lines and one grinding line, now that would be awesome, and keep in mind Mats can play both left and right wing………..
If the Rangers could muster 4 lines, we would be hard to beat..
Stepan Anisimov Gaborik
Wolski Richards Callahan
Dubinsky Christensen Zuccarello
Fedetenko Boyle Prust
I mean with what we got thats probably the best we can do to try and get 4 rolling lines and get Zuccs in there, but I like what we have right now, lets not do anything while its working.

you cut out the main reason for the winning streak!
Sean Avery! (don’t know how to use the sarcasm font)
EC just drives me nuts. So much talent, so little effort. If he were more useful than once every 10 games those lines would be great.

Yeah I hate EC too, I just took a stab at it I was bored lol.

Yea I see that too, I was just trying to throw something together lol.

I imagine Dubinsky would get so frustrated on a line like that – EC’s inconsistency and Zucc’s lack of size. He’d be in the corner trying to get a cycle going and just be like WTF
Dubi is the best at 1-man cycling, if they double up on him zucc/EC can make them pay
Although dubi/Boyle/Zuke would be interesting possibly

my thoughts exactly
boyle instead of ec fits perfect like that. drop ec and put avery with feds and prust. idc if theres no center, they are all gringind 4th ine type players who can surprise you with their offensive skills ever so often. if anything maybe rupp when hes beack on that 4th
GAS
Wolski Richards Cally
Avery Dubinsky Zuccarello
Feds Boyle Prust

You’re not the only one, but there’s no question he’s one of the 12 best forwards in the organization right now.

I feel I’m one of very few people who would really like to see wolski hang around and play to his potential. Sucks that we’ve seen so little of him this year to see if he’s learned.
Although maybe that means we can sign him cheap next year if needed
by teknics on Nov 18, 2011 4:15 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Unlike EC, Wolski actually grinds in the corners for pucks and has the skill to make plays and finish. We just haven’t seen it that much this year because of his injuries.
