Bantering Points: The Marc Staal Situation
The New York Rangers are without their best defenseman and Alternate Captain, Marc Staal. There is no timetable for Staal's return, so the Rangers have started to look at outside options.
The Rangers already brought in Jeff Woywitka from the Montreal Canadiens, and also given Tim Erixon, Brendan Bell, and Steve Eminger playing time they would not normally receive.
If not for the fantastic play of Ryan McDonagh, the under appreciated improvement of Michael Del Zotto, and the return of Michael Sauer, the Rangers may be in a situation now where they have to make a big trade.
Luckily, though, the Rangers have Daniel Girardi, Ryan McDonagh, Michael Sauer, and Michael Del Zotto playing top two line quality hockey. Steve Eminger is having a surprisingly not bad start to his season, as well.
Still, the Rangers have offered a deal to Anton Stralman. The Rangers also talked to the Toronto Maple Leafs about trade possibilities, although it is not clear if the talks were about defensemen.
So, do the Rangers need to go out and trade for anyone, or should they continue to try to fill the defensive hole from within? An Anton Stralman signing would be a good move, if you ask me, but a trade for a top line defenseman is not necessary.
Meanwhile, Blue Seat Blogs asks how much you would pay Ryan McDonagh. Thoughts?
I will be at the game tonight, Let's Go Rangers!

This is how Marc probably feels right now. http://m.youtube.com/index?desktop_uri=%2F&gl=US#/watch?v=OaTO8_KNcuo. you don’t need to make a big trade just maybe a draft pick for a bottom pair defenseman. I think Erixon will come back and be like mcdonagh was last year when he got called up. Erixon will be our 6th defenseman before the year is out.

This sentence:
< Steve Eminger is having a surprisingly not bad start to his season, as well. >
Awkward, but surprisingly not ineffective
Kinda brilliant, actually.
+1
Let me know how that works out for you . . .
Agreed
I read that back to myself a couple times and couldn’t think of a better way to put it.

sports illustrated truth & rumors said a few days ago it was Fronson. Not that they’re a very reliable source but it is a name…

Unless we are talking months
Don’t trade, and preferably don’t even sign a new player. All summer/fall we were talking about how loaded we are with defensive prospects – give them a shot. McIlwrath wasn’t ready and is in juniors, and Erixon has already been sent down, but what about the other names like V-tank, Kundratek? Not sure if I’ve left anyone else off the list.
If they’re not happy between our Eminger (who plays hard enough to earn a fair shake if you ask me) Bell and Woywitka (who has more NHL games logged than most of our D lineup), why not see what we have in that trio down in CT? It’s an opportunity to give them a sniff of the NHL and retain any picks or players we’d rather not part with, just to get a mediocre stopgap.
Show some faith and give them an opportunity to step up.
Agreed

Kundratek is being healthy scratched in A, so I don’t know what that means, but I wouldn’t expect to see him anytime soon up in the NHL. Also V-Tank isn’t ready, I would say Woywitka and Bell are better options right now. Erixon went down because they want him to play more instead of being buried on the 3rd pair.

Interesting. I just find it to be a total reversal from training camp when we had so many potential candidates to fill out the last pairing. People wanted MDZ in the AHL. Whereas now, we’re so desperate we’re looking at players who failed to latch on with an NHL club or possibly trading picks/players for a band-aid.
If Staal is truly going to miss “months” then maybe we make a move for a top-4 caliber player, but I’d much rather see us continue building from within than take on another contract and block out an up-and-comer. If they sent down Erixon to get more playing time, I have to think it’s because he was going to be a healthy scratch. If it’s because he wasn’t getting enough action on the 3rd pair, maybe Torts should give them more action. He’s leaning very heavily on Girardi and somewhat McDonagh; I’m worried maybe too much. I also wouldn’t mind rolling 4 lines a bit more.
I personally don’t think its much of a big deal. All the talk over the summer about D depth was relatively correct as in future depth, because lets face it McIlrath and Erixon were the only guys that really have a great future with us. If Staal was here, and DZ would have been the guy to win that last spot with Eminger, and We would still have two fantastic prospects in the pipeline. I think any hype surrounding V-Tank and Kundratek is way overblown because personally I don’t see either of them playing for the big club ever.

We are still going to need to carry a 7th man, so who gets a call?(That is if Stralman does not sign, or no move is made) I doubt Erixon gets called up, he was just sent down. Bell made one bad pinch and got sent down. So who are they going to call? I doubt Bickel gets the call, but what about Parlett? Any chance he gets called up?

Team game
The defense would obviously be better if Staal were healthy, but if the team plays like they did against San Jose they won’t miss him as much. All five players regularly collapsed around the net/slot area to limit the quality chances against. Continue that type of play in your zone and you’ll cover up a lot of short comings on D (not that we have many). That said – get well soon Marc!
Manning lobs it, Burress alone, touchdown New York!
For the empty net, Mark Messier... do you believe it?! Do you believe it?! He said we will win game 6 - he has just picked up the hat trick!
That D style with hanks awesome ability to aim/control most, if any, rebounds should be great

None of these defensive signings are going to help anything. it’s the equivalent of putting a bandaid on your foot when your hand is bleeding.
The biggest issue we’ve had so far on defense is controlling other teams top lines. It falls more on the forwards currently (seriously, can we stop using Richards power v power already?) but Girardi/McDonagh need to do a better job of shot suppression as well. That’s not to take away from the starts they’ve had, but the offense each is adding and Girardi’s blocked shot brigade are masking some holes that exist.
Staal’s the only solution in the horizon that would fix that problem. Stralman, Franson, Woywitka, Bell, Eminger, Valetenko, Parlett, whoever else are 3rd pair guys who will play 3rd/4th line opponents. They’re not a solution.

I don' think McD is ready to fill staal's skates
so unless we are trading for a Suter type player, we probably just have to bite the bullet until staal gets back.
Also, having Richards center the pack wingers aren’t going to make them any better defensively—that basically guaranteed that they are no longer our go-to defensive line and will be asked to contribute more offensively than defensively.
This leaves Anisimov kind of floating out in the ether—he’s our best defensive center and is skilled offensively—can you see Torts putting him between prust and feds for our top defensive line?
that basically guaranteed that they are no longer our go-to defensive line
You’d think that, but that’s the line getting the most ice time against other teams 1st line players right now. And that’s at home, where it’s ultimately Tortorella’s decision.
As for Anisimov, I’m not sure what to do about that. Eventually I think he needs to play back between Dubi/Cally. I’m finishing up my scoring chance stuff for October tonight, I’ll talk about it more there, but I don’t get how Anisimov’s performance got him demoted. I was a bit happy that the 4th line ES time was offset by Anisimov getting 2nd unit PP time.
I still say in a perfect world, Fed-Boyle-Prust becomes the 4th line, Step and AA center the non-Richards lines with skill people flanking them, be it Wolski-Step-Zuccarello, or Hagelin-Anisimov-mystery winger, or whatever it takes.

If that's the case, then yea, it makes sense for anisimov to be on that line
I just think that the way gaby is playing, he really doesn’t need richards on his line—gaby is going to lift anyone on his line, so might as well use richards to get some other wingers going.
looks strange, but what about:
wolski-Richards-zuccarello
pack line
Gaby-step-Hagelin/avery
Feds-Boyle-Prust
I’d just put WW-Richards-Gaborik together and be done. If Richards isn’t w/ Duballahan, he should be with Gaborik. The alternative is something nuts like Avery-Richards-Christensen, and you may as well leave the goal light on behind Lundqvist/Biron with that combo.
Hagelin/Avery-Step-Zucc would work fine.

Del Zotto
Everyone keeps saying that Del Zotto has been having a very good year. While his passes have been smarter and his head been in the game more, the first 8 or so games were really not good defensively. The Rangers goalies bailed him out several times a game on awful “blown coverage” type scenarios. Almost every time there was a great chance by the other team, especially on a rush, it was usually him that got beat. It just didn’t get exposed much because he didn’t get burned a lot, always getting bailed out by goalie and or other D partner. The last game was better but that was mostly because the Rangers were all over the Sharks. I hope he has continued improvement and that these lapses don’t continue.
'Cause Brawndo's got electrolyes....
Unfortunately if we want him to develop into the offensive D we want, we’ll have to accept his occasional D lapses. The defensive portion of his abilities is going to take longer to develop

BRING BACK MATT GILROY!!!!
okay now…in all honesty.
Aside from Woywitka i think we’re fine standing pat.
If we can get a decent 3rd pair guy to replace him, for cheap then I’m all about picking up one of these guys…..i think Stralman is the best option since we would not have to trade anyone/thing away.
In Prust we Trust
we need to get cam newton before the panther’s get off lock down cause eli cant (QB) by hisselfall this saeson also we need plax back to cause smith is the best (WR) we got nd plax cant help smith nd the team out….. do that nd we have a a shout at the superblow
