Late Night New York Rangers News: Bobby Ryan Trade "Imminent," Henrik Lundqvist Makes A Twitter

NEW YORK, NY - NOVEMBER 03: Bobby Ryan #9 of the Anaheim Ducks handles the puck as Ryan McDonagh #27 of the New York Rangers defends on November 3, 2011 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. (Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images)

Lots of news breaking tonight, so let's take a look.

CSN's John Boruk is reporting that a Bobby Ryan trade is imminent, and that the Rangers are the front runners to acquire the winger.

A source close to the situation tells me a Bobby Ryan trade is imminent. Talks have been ongoing for weeks.

The "talks have been ongoing for weeks" immediately piqued my interest, as the rumors have not been swirling for weeks. One has to wonder if Glen Sather has Bob Murray's number on speed dial.

On that note, I wonder (worry) if Carl Hagelin's promotion had anything to do with the possibility of a Bobby Ryan trade. I do not believe so, as it seems the move was sparked by Andre Deveaux's suspension, but it isn't insane to think so.

Since we're all talking hypothetical deals here, I'll offer my best guess: If the Rangers get him it will be Brandon Dubinsky, Pavel Valentenko, one of Brian Boyle, Mats Zuccarello, Wotjek Wolski, Christian Thomas, or Ryan Bourque, and a pick for Ryan.

The Ducks seem to be eager to rid themselves of Ryan, and Sather has a tendency to steal away players from other teams. Stay tuned.

In other news, Henrik Lundqvist has created a twitter!

I said it on an earlier thread

Mortgage a little more future then a shake-up of the later would make most sense. Adding Ryan while dropping an Avery, Mitchell, Christensen from the starting lineup would be unbelievable.

Agreed. I don’t like the idea of this being a distraction for the team when they are doing so well right now. Guys like Dubinsky and Boyle shouldn’t be lacing up their skates for the next week or two wondering if the next time they do it they will be wearing a Ducks jersey.

Get it done quick and clean.

Coach does need to go, but Bob Murray has invested too much salary and years into him (and trust). And since the Ducks work under an internal cap, in a non-traditional hockey market that doesn’t really net them profit, and an owner who doesn’t care, the GM has to work with what he has got.

I think the proposal will..

Centre around an NHL-ready or soon to be NHL-ready defenseman, and a contract that will offset Bobby’s $5.1M.

it's alot yes, but

I think it or something similar is the most likely one that will happen…

by mgweissman on Nov 30, 2011 8:50 PM EST up reply actions

Ah the fun of being an armchair GM. Don’t worry about cap hit, don’t worry about what the other team wants. Put together a list of your scraps and call it a deal.

He is my lame attempt…

Dubi is the the most logical piece to be included. The money works and ANA gets a similar player back. Obviously not equal in skill so more needs to be added.

ANA has to be looking for a dman in the deal. Not one that could maybe play next year (McIlrath, V-tank). They are going to want to slot somebody in this year to take some heavy minutes. They will NOT want MDZ back as they already have him in Fowler. To me that leaves Sauer, Erixon and Giradri. I don’t see us parting with Giradi at this pint with Staal out. I would prefer to keep Sauer if we are planning to contend this year (getting Ryan indicates that we are). That leaves Erixon.

I think the duck will also look for a 3rd body back to add to their depth that will be worse next year when some top minute players walk away. It could be a Boyle, perhaps MZA or someone other prospect close to make the jump but down on our depth chart.

Ideal: Dubi, Erixon, MZA (maybe a mid rd pick)
Possible: Dubi, Erixon and Boyle

Aucune clause de Mouvement

Shit i’m scared…. Sather don’t fuck this up. This is our future and our current situation.

I’m glad I didn’t by a Dubinsky jersey as sadly he will probably be dealt if the deal is done.

I could deal with Dubi, Erixon, and MZA and a pick, but I don’t want Hagelin going anywhere. I know he might not be a 30 or even 20 goal a year guy down the road, but I still think he makes our team a lot better. This is the perfect positon for MZA also, He can make an immediate impact on the ducks.

On Dubinsky: One of the nicest players to me when I met the team, plus he’s my best friends second cousin. That being said, he seems to be playing a bit lazy lately, so I hope regardless of which team it’s for this sparks Dubinsky to tally some more points.

If they accept Dubi as the main piece, you have to do it, I think.

So sick of this, but you're right! :(

This is THE reason that unless Torts bends, he will NEVER coach a SC team in NY.

MG’s and guys like Ryan’s jobs are to score. PERIOD!

Let the Feds, BR’s and Cally’s of the world – all already good back checkers – do the defensive work on their respective lines.

Only ones who NEED to absolutely play D are the D! And MDZ is the only one who needs work.

Plus, that’s why we have Hank!

Just ask Leetch how many times Richter bailed him out.

Surprised so many are willing to deal Erixon. I see the future defense of the team (until extensions and whatnot) as

Staal-Girardi
McDonagh-Sauer
MDZ-Erixon

It’s funny, the Rangers have too many defensemen if Staal returns and McIllrath is ready. Still, love the depth.

He was drafted specifically to fill a need. We still have that need. Now if management don’t think he has progress as expected, it could be him.

But understand that in a few years we will have to pay a lot for Staal and Girardi. Plus Mcd will get a hefty raise in 2 yrs and Sauer will be looking for a raise as well. But in real life? Well kinda.

Start with taking out the 1st.

MZA is not going to be an asset for us. He will not resign after this year. He has been passed on the depth chart by Hags for sure.

Erixon is going to be good but the fact remains we just have a lot of good dmen. Somethig has to give. either you trade away some of your top end and deveople your kids (Erixon) or you have to drop one of the kids if you plan on making a move now. Signing Richards and trading for Ryan would indicate to me that they want to go for it. So a good Erixon in 3 years is not worth that much to us today.

Ryan is an upgrade from Dubi but no so much that ANA wont do it.

WW

I think WW will almost certainly be included in the package. Expiring contracts are treated as commodities, especially for a team like the Ducks that’s trying to shed salary.

The Ducks would rather have a salary that is long-term, considering our dwindling core and old players. That’s honestly what we really need, players who can play now but also contribute in the future while under contract.

Ok guys lets be real here for a second.

Is Bobby Ryan a top 20 forward in this league. If he isn’t than we have no buisness doing this deal.

Here’s some forwards on my list i think are better in no order:

Ovechkin
Crosby
Malkin
Datsyuk
Zetterberg
Joe Thornton
Stamkos
Henrik Sedin
Daniel Sedin
Corey Perry
Phil Kessel
Giroux
Toews
Kane

Yeah I don’t think Ryan is better than those guys. Maybe it’s best we stay out.

We are overvaluing him

He’s a 60-70 points player, and Dubi is a 40-50 points player, while bringing bette defense and more toughness.

That gap is not worth Erixon, MZA, and a 1st or anything close to that.

I’m not the one saying to base the trade off of this year statistics.

You make the trade because Ryan is a better player. Will score more goals that dubi. Is a better value. Fills a need on wing that Dubi obviously isnt filling.

Giving them MZA is not giving up much of anything. He will no longer be an asset for us by the end of the season.

Erixon because Ryan is worth more than dubi and he is the only dman that could play now but doesn’t take away from our starting lineup. Plus defense is a strenght of ours and the smart thing is to trade from your strengths.

Considering he’s 24, a 3 time 30 goal scorer, and is actually on the market, it’d be stupid not to try and acquire him. 13 forwards a team, times 30 = 390. That is the top 5% of forwards in the league. He’s at least top 10%, and you can never get that on a market, while in season.

Top 20 is NOT a criteria

If you can improve incrementally, you do it.

Hate to use it as the most extreme example, but Espo used to say: “If I could get a guy of equal value for 1,000 bucks cheaper, I did it.”

Now, the problem with that logic of course is it’s not all about $$$, but the point he made about incrementally improving in one column is well-taken.

Plus, we just spent $60M mere months ago, so it would be outlandish to sign a guy of similar value at this point along with Gabby and Hank’s contract.

The difference between Ryan and Dubi is 20 points. Those points are not really worth Sauer alone, let alone MZA and Wolski thrown in there.

At the moment? He probably wants some consistency and players who play a complete game that fit into the culture he has built in New York.

Is Bobby Ryan a guy like that? I don’t know, he certainly has the wheels for it and played on a USA team that plays similarly to the way the Rangers play.

Glad you feel that way because I feel that way too. I have been trying to convince myself that if you can take a shot at landing someone like Ryan you go for it, no matter what your record is, because he is a young guy that is good for 30 goals and has room to improve.

Tough call, but it is hard not to pull the trigger when it is a young, stud talent like Ryan.

From California newspaper

Should the Ducks trade Bobby Ryan?

Yes. The team has been lousy and a star player in return could shake things up or a nice package could fill some holes on the roster.
37
No. Ryan has topped 30 goals in each of his three full NHL seasons and has the talent to reach 40 (or 50). You build around that player. You don’t trade him.
