Rangers Vs. Senators: New York Rangers Make It Five Straight Against Ottawa

The New York Rangers won their fifth straight game tonight against the Ottawa Senators, 3-2. The newly named GAS (Gaborik, Anisimov, and Stepan) line combined for all three Ranger goals tonight, and led them to the victory. The game started off with a bang, and had tons of back and forth action throughout the first period. Just 2:50 into the game, Sean Avery and Zenon Konopka dropped the gloves. Bad blood has been boiling over since these two teams last met, with the questionable hit on Artem Anisimov and the Wojtek Wolski elbow on Daniel Alfredsson.

In the second period, Milan Michalek got the Senators on the board off a wicked wrist shot, that beat Lundqvist over the shoulder. Less than a minute later, the Rangers got back on the board quick off a slick pass from Derek Stepan, to Marian Gaborik. This line has been clicking the last three games, and are really starting to put up the numbers. The same line struck again just two minutes later, but this time Derek Stepan banged home the rebound.

However, it is also worth noting that Artem Anisimov was a key factor in all of the goals scored tonight. His strong fore-check played a large role in the development of the second Rangers goal. He also made a strong play to the net, and forced Anderson to kicked out a rebound.

Follow after the jump for more.

Star-divide

Following the Rangers goals, the Senators tried to get their game back together and Jared Cowen dropped the gloves with Andre Deveaux. Cowen was also wearing a visor during this fight, and failed to take off his helmet before the fight. However, Deveaux still found a way to win, and caught Cowen in the chin with a huge punch.

The GAS line struck again with Marian Gaborik netting his second goal of the game. Anisimov played another huge role by chipping the puck off the boards to spring Gabby and Stepan up ice. Gaborik let go a quick wrist shot that beat Anderson over his right shoulder.

It didn't take long for the Senators to get back into the game, with a goal coming from Nick Foligno. This goal was caused by a bad breakdown defensively by Jeff Woywitka and Steve Eminger, which left Foligno wide open in the slot.

Henrik Lundqvist had another strong performance in net tonight, and led the Rangers to their fifth straight victory. Some key saves came in the final minute, when the Senators applied some serious pressure, but were unable to convert.

To finish off, here are tonight's three stars of the game, along with the recipient of the Broadway Hat.

Good win, nice to keep the streak going.

BUT…they were a one line team tonight. The other three lines weren’t just ineffective, they were pinned back in the defensive zone all night. Richards on a weak transition slap shot was the only chance any of the bottom 9 generated. They won’t survive like that.

Spezza’s line killed Girardi/McDonagh/Richards/Callahan/LW du jour tonight, but fortunately they only converted the one time.

spezza might be the most underrated forward in the game. his prime years are being wasted in ottawa, he could do some serious damage with top flight wingers and a good team around him

No doubt, but our ‘shutdown’ guys have to do a much, much better job than they did tonight against guys like him.

agreed. that is where staal’s injury will really start to hurt this team as the year goes on. girardi and mcd are very very good but they may have been overachieving just a little bit in the first part of the season. they will struggle against a top-line every now and then

by nyrangerfan521 on Nov 9, 2011 11:36 PM EST up reply actions

i wouldn’t say overachieving… i mean Girardi has been a rock on defense for the rangers for years now and has gone unnoticed due to marc staal… and McDonagh was highly touted before he even entered the NHL he was said to be a stud prospect on D… and he’s playing like it… he has the assets to make up for mistakes, mainly his speed…

I think the d would be so much more balance with staal back for obvious reasons, but the 2nd goal was basically the result of our 3rd pairing which i don’t trust with a 4 goal lead…

Girardi’s a rock but he’s never shown he can drive play forward against top competition, and he’s still not really showing that. His value comes from his abilities and instincts in his own zone.

Anyone else think that think McD had his first suspect game of the season tonight?

by Zuppa Di Pesce on Nov 9, 2011 11:19 PM EST reply actions

I didn’t mean that he played badly just that this was the first game were he sort of “regressed”. I use that term loosely, cuz I of course don’t think that he’s going to get worse but he just didn’t seem especially effective last night. There weren’t any glaring mistakes but then again I can’t recall a defensive play by him that was really exceptional (which he had been doing consistently this season).

by Zuppa Di Pesce on Nov 10, 2011 10:03 AM EST up reply actions

there were a couple noticeable mistakes

but overall i thought he was still a rock. made a couple big blocks and some nice body checks

by nhl21 on Nov 9, 2011 11:22 PM EST up reply actions

Honestly not sure we “should have” won this game, we rarely had sustained pressure but managed to make a few pretty plays and capitalize on ottawa’s errors. I’ll take the win but next game I hope the other 3 lines show up.

by teknics on Nov 9, 2011 11:23 PM EST via mobile reply actions

When you don’t even really notice at least Feds you know the team is having a quiet night

by teknics on Nov 9, 2011 11:24 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

but we did… the point of secondary scoring is that when one line is shut down the others are able to produce… richards line was shut down and gabby’s line produced… it doesn’t surprise me that our best player, one of the purest shooters in the NHL scored twice… it’s all about matchups and tonight the gabby line exploited their matchup in the 2nd…

I didn’t think we should have lost thats just my opinion but good teams win the marginal games… if you think we should have probably lost that begs the question how would we play if we dominated?

i thought we played well enough to win… and baring the one mistake leaving folino wide open (our 3rd d pairing mind you) and this game is 3-1 without our top defenseman whom is one of the best in the league… and lundqvist played well and by no means had to “steal this game”

one clear problem i see is that late in the game we go into panic mode with a lead and the other team comes close to scoring… that i don’t like… but the reason we have a 6+ mil goaltender is to close the door…

Think my post came across wrong we didn’t play like we should have lost…it was just a bit surprising to win like we did with what 16 shots.

Realistically it was almost impressive and I’m glad gabby and co stepped up

by teknics on Nov 10, 2011 7:44 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

completely agree

we had no offensive pressure and managed to capitalize on the defensive mistakes of a bad team with a porous goaltender. great win. the type of win a contender will get because even when not playing great hockey, they still get a win. what remains to be seen is if when that 1st line struggles, will the others be there to pick up the slack?

by nhl21 on Nov 10, 2011 7:55 AM EST up reply actions

Porous is one way to say it...

Anderson’s positioning was awful for Gaborik’s first goal. When he clearly saw the cross-ice pass to Gaborik, he didn’t even try to reposition to stop Gaborik’s shot—he simply leaned a little bit in that direction and threw his glove out hoping for the best. The laziness he displayed on that goal made EC look like Callahan in comparison.

by Kritikal on Nov 10, 2011 8:46 AM EST up reply actions

i know right?

stepan is playing great but that pass was so obvious it was sad. and yet when it finally got to gaborik, he was able to tap it into an open net. the effort/anticipation of anderson on that goal was attrocious

by nhl21 on Nov 10, 2011 1:21 PM EST up reply actions

if you think we should have probably lost that begs the question how would we play if we dominated?

Much, much better than we did last night. The only difference between last night and some of the games early on is we had one line produce. There was no forecheck pressure, turnovers, all the stuff people complained about at 0-1-2.

as long as he isn’t taking bad penalties i couldn’t give a shit about what he does… I don’t have any problem with the guy… but currently the rangers have no salary cap issues… if cap became an issue… they’d send him back down… for 5 minutes he’s done nothing wrong and it’s really a non-issue… i don’t think newbury or any other whale pack players could do anything more than what he’s done as a 4th liner…

Avery did his job last night

by fighting Konopka, who shot his mouth off about retribution for the Alfredsson-Wolski hit. But then why should it matter that Avery stands up for his teammates?

Win or lose doesn’t matter in a situation like that—a fired-up guy like Konopka can do damage if so motivated, and Avery took the hit for his team and his teammates by standing up to him.

Must be another example of Avery’s selfishness, I guess……

by greifi griffie on Nov 10, 2011 8:50 AM EST up reply actions

Avery was clearly outmatched by Konopka, kept it somewhat interesting, and didn’t get injured in the process. I’d call that a moral victory.

by Kritikal on Nov 10, 2011 8:53 AM EST up reply actions

Again—Avery did his job last night. He answered the bell for his team against a thug who called Wolski out…..so to me that counts as something done for his team…playing his role properly and all that.

It’s something that can’t be said about guys like Dubinsky last night. The stats crowd may not be able to quantify it but I’m sure Avery’s teammates noticed his efforts last night.

Anisimov had a quiet start to his season and really hasn’t done anything flashy, but he’s been on of the best forwards to this point and putting forth a terrific 2-way effort, just needs to get some more shots. He seemed to be involved in every aspect of defense/offense/fore-check; you name it. He still looks like he could fill out even more, but he’s just going about his business every shift lately like a machine.

Gaborik/Stepan continue to shine out there like they’re sharing the same brain. Those 2 with AA between them makes for a potent line with well-above average speed, scoring, fore-checking presence, and some defensive awareness and back-check effort (there were at least 2 plays where AA’s hustle on the back-check saved potential goals against).

Richards/Dubi/Cally….Outside of Cally throwing his body around…this line just looked ‘slow’ tonight, in a sense that they always seemed to be catching up to the play and just not reading what was going on. Moving Dubinsky onto one of the lower lines might be the best thing for him to focus more on his offense (remember that stretch last season when Gabby was out that Dubinsky took over for a month or so?). Putting him on Boyle’s line might open him up to be more offensive. He was at least trying to shoot more tonight (albeit he took some real poor quality shots).

It wasn’t pretty, but damnit, these are the types of games winning teams have to go on the road and win, against a team you should beat.

by Caerid11 on Nov 10, 2011 1:16 AM EST reply actions

I’d just like to point out that we are currently 4th in the East with 19 points. Pittsburgh is 1st with 21 points, but they have played one more game than us. So if we won our next game and our games played leveled out with PIT, then we’d be tied for FIRST in the East. Where are all the cliff jumpers now?

Ohh i’m well aware our standing now doesn’t mean much come April. I still stand by the fact that they got off to a slow start due to all the travel. Far too many people were underestimating the effect that much traveling takes on the players. Not that I don’t like Prospal as a player, but we already had had to send Zucc down because we couldn’t give him playing time so he might be hard to fit in. Maybe you could scratch EC or Avery and then roll four lines, but it would still be hard.

by Zuppa Di Pesce on Nov 10, 2011 3:33 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t see pointing out problems the Rangers have as “cliff jumping”. Don’t get me wrong , I’ll take wins any way they can get them. But this team still needs work. They nearly blew a 3 goal lead against Montreal and didn’t really show up in that 3rd period at all. They were a one line team against the Sens and were grossly out shot. That kind of play will not work against Philly, Washington, Pitts, etc. While we are 2 points out of 1st in the east, we are also 2 from 8th. So I’m not jumping off a cliff , I’m also not buying this kind of play as a recipe for winning long term.

by nyrangerfan521 on Nov 10, 2011 1:54 AM EST reply actions

Despite all the crap that Dallas fans had to say about Richards regarding his defensive ineffectiveness (making him out to be Kotalik 2.0), he has a very active stick and breaks up quite a few plays with it. His stick was also responsible for a half-dozen takeaways tonight, mostly in the offensive zone. They can handle the match-ups just fine, but if your primary concern is to get Dubinsky going, then perhaps lowering his quality of competition (as you have stated) would help. They looked great in the transition—it’s only a matter of time.

by Kritikal on Nov 10, 2011 3:39 AM EST up reply actions

he looked pretty bad defensively last night imo. outside of a few stick cecks you mentioned, his problem is he doesnt move his feet in the defensive zone. lots of ugly lazy reaching.

by nhl21 on Nov 10, 2011 8:02 AM EST up reply actions

Agreed, his defensive play and effort are good enough were I consider him to be a two-way forward, and at the very least NOT a defensive liability

by Zuppa Di Pesce on Nov 10, 2011 8:15 AM EST up reply actions

I don’t know if I’d call Richards a two-way forward. There’s a big difference between “defensively capable” and “two-way forward”. While he can handle the higher competition (in terms of preventing scoring chances), the competition prevents him from being completely effective. With Gaborik’s line getting favorable match-ups, Richards’s line is taking the brunt of it.

by Kritikal on Nov 10, 2011 8:51 AM EST up reply actions

nice to keep winning

Its nice to win but after a period and a half we only had 4 shots on net .We can not keep that pace up when we start playing teams like phillie or the caps there gonna have a feast. we need more shots 4 in a period 1/2 is not going to cut it pluse we need the power play.We also need other players to step it up cant depend on Gabby AA Step. And dubi is what he is. We tend to overate our players and he is one of them at best he is a third line player.compare him to Stepan in hes second year and stepan is better.4 mill $ 20 goal scorer that kills penalties.take away empty net goals last year and tell me what he scored.glade they are winning hope the other lines pick up and more shots

i hate to say it… but as a pure conspiracy theorist….

staal isn’t suffering post concussion syndrome… there is something more to this… and its clear the rangers don’t disclose their injuries…

Rupp was said to just be having arthroscopic surgery then BAM he had surgery to repair a torn meniscus…

i’ve heard possibly a neck injury… obviously none of that is confirmed…

Torn meniscus repair

is done by arthroscopic surgery. I had it done last year. That’s why he’s out for only 4-6 weeks. That’s a normal recovery prognosis for that surgery. If they had to open the knee he’d be gone for the rest of the year. I’ve been through that as well.
Sorry to upset your conspiracy predilection with facts.

The hat

Glad to see Artie got it. His gritty play is the reason all 3 goals were possible. Good to see his teammates realize that.

Manning lobs it, Burress alone, touchdown New York!
For the empty net, Mark Messier... do you believe it?! Do you believe it?! He said we will win game 6 - he has just picked up the hat trick!

I would hardly call the..

Dubi-Richards-Cally line lethal? They are right around a league average second line IMO. Don’t get me wrong, I rally like Dubinsky . He is one of my favorites. Be he looks terrible right now. I guess it’s his turn to be the whipping boy on this squad, because let’s face facts, someone has to be.

Did anyone notice him get smoked on the back-check last night by Karlson. Wow, can that guy fly and I do think that Dubi may have been caught at the end of a shift but it just looked lazy, I would have dove. I think that all the guys on this team OWE it to Hank, and to each other to do all they can do to block a pass on an ODD man rush, which he didn’t do.

But I don’t want to get on him too much or pick apart every shift the guy plays, I just want to see more because he means so much to this team, and if he starts scoring, then we can consider our second line lethal and consider the Rangers a top team in the East.

I haven’t owned a NHL jersey since I was a kid. NO offense to anyone who wears them but I always felt it was kind of corny . But now, that I’m old and don’t give a shit and finally have a players jersey who I would really want to wear. I may just purchase a Winter Classic # 42.

Let’s go Rangers.

I agree that the DRC line isn’t lethal …….yet but if Dubi can get going I think it can be one of the best second lines in the league.

Totally agree, when (I dont mean if) Dubi gets going our scoring depth will be excellent (provided the GAS line keeps up good production)

Dude, Dubi was on the ice for over a minute at that point. The fact that he gave an effort to backcheck there speaks to his determination.

He’s playing great right now, he just needs to net one.

Also, I agree completely on the AA jersey :)

"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
