Bobby Ryan Trade Rumors: Does Randy Carlyle Getting Fired Kill A Trade?

It's been a strange two days in the NHL, with Bobby Ryan trade rumors hitting a fever pitch last night, only to come back down this morning. If you're unaware, the Anaheim Ducks fired head coach Randy Carlyle and replaced him with Bruce Boudreau. Yes, that Bruce Boudreau, who ends up being out of work around 66 hours.

It would appear that with a new coach the Ducks wouldn't be as interested in trading Ryan as they were last night. Even with the win over the Montreal Canadiens the Ducks are 7-13-4 and might indeed look for a trade down the road but, for now, I would be surprised if he was moved anytime soon.

The general speculation was that Ducks GM Bob Murray needed to spark his team one way or another, and the coaching change seems to be the change. It doesn't mean Ryan might not find himself on the block again, especially if the Ducks continue to falter.

In the end, the New York Rangers have a good thing going right now. Yes, I fully support a move to get Ryan if he becomes, or happens to still be, available. I understand the reluctance to trade guys like Carl Hagelin, Christian Thomas or even Chris Kreider; but the reality is that you hope your prospects turn into Ryan, Ryan is already there.

For now though, the Rangers core stays in place and the farm system remains untouched.

And you know what? That's not such a bad thing either.

yeah the hiring of boudreau most likely puts any ryan deal on hold indefinitely. if you’re the ducks, you have already made one major shake up by firing you’re entire coaching staff so they will want to see how that plays out, not immediately make another major move. its a shame, but maybe it turns out to be the best thing for us.

I don’t think so. Murray knew he was firing Carlyle while entertaining trade offers. I would think the GM who does the hiring and firing of coaches would have this information yesterday, lol. I think there is a Ducks/Ryan relationship problem. I say he still gets traded.

by Richter1994 on Dec 1, 2011 9:25 AM EST reply actions

I think it was a Ryan/Carlyle problem more than a Ryan/Ducks problem. His re-signing wasn’t exactly smooth sailing, but again that could be coach related as much as money or front office.

He could still be traded, but I think it’s on hold now while Boudreau & Co. comes in and evaluates what they have.

could very well be because Carlyle appears to be a pr-ck and wore out his welcome. but Murray knew he was firing him yesterday morning while he’s negotiating with teams for Ryan. it didn’t occur to him to fire Carlyle at 7PM last night. Now the only thing that changes this is if Boudreau couldn’t agree to a contract and his hiring was in doubt. That changes my scenario if Boudreau agreed late last night to a contract. Then Ryan’s trade could be on hold.

by Richter1994 on Dec 1, 2011 10:20 AM EST up reply actions

certainly a possibility, and we don’t even have close to enough information on the situation to make a correct evaluation. it just doesn’t seem fair to your knew coach to trade away a superstar talent before you have given him a chance to work with him.

by BronxBeliever on Dec 1, 2011 9:30 AM EST up reply actions

I would agree but I’m sure Boudreau was brought up to date as to what he was stepping into. his influence either way could determine if Ryan is traded after all.

Funny thing is that usually in franchise (Be A GM) mode the Ducks are one of the teams that the Rangers have a great relationship with. So I wonder what it would take to get him in the game.

I did it in 2010, it took Boyle, Avery, and I think Jordan Owens (might’ve been Parenteau, forget which prospect)

Did it 2012 offered Dubi, Wolski, 1st for Ryan and they said yes. Might have gotten away without giving Wolski

I’m pretty sure Ryan won’t be traded right now. I think this was blown way outta proportion by us the fans.

Now if the Ducks don’t perform under Boudreau you know it’s the team and not the coach.

don’t think that means too much. I’m sure they are considering, a gm will consider any trade. at this point though i think it would have to be a huge overpay to pry ryan away from them

by BronxBeliever on Dec 1, 2011 12:41 PM EST up reply actions

so in other words, if they get a “home run” package then they pull the trigger. so if the Rangers offered Dubi, Kreider, Sauer, hagelin, a #1 and ring dings (for Boudreau) then Murray will say “ok.” lol.

if it was, that must've been an interesting call to whoever the GM was that had the 'imminent' deal

murray: “yeah, so listen, i was gonna stand by the coach and send ryan to you for players x y and z, but my head seems less foggy now than it was twenty-four hours ago, so i’m backing out”

sather: “fuck…i mean….look over here for a second….”

Ice Cream Bruce in charge with the Duckies now?

If I was him one of the first things I would say is, “We aren’t trading Bobby F*cking Ryan.” But maybe it was an organizational issue and they still want the kid gone. If so, let’s get back in the hunt, no matter how distracting and silly it is!

Even if Ryan's off the market Carlyle is not.

Carlyle has a better winning percentage (playoff and regular season) then Torts, and his teams have been good at developing homegrown talent, and creating offense. This is a time the MSG should be able to lean on the rest of the league with their deep pockets. Offer him a front office type job to keep him under wraps, if Torts can’t get the offense going consistently or the PP to keep producing, you put him in as an “associate coach” to light the fire under Torts.

It’s good to have options, and I’d say Carlyle is better then any of the re-treads who’ve hit the market of late.

by BuckarooClub on Dec 1, 2011 2:54 PM EST reply actions

Any single Ducks fan and countless ex-Ducks players have mentioned how much they hate Carlyle.

We know you don’t like Torts, but does anything ever go through your mind that’s not an opportunistic thought??

Yeah because threatening Torts is exactly what a team thats playing well needs right now. I used to have respect for you, even during your I want Marc Staal gone days, but now its getting ridiculous. Dude just have faith in your team, I don’t even understand how watching this team is enjoyable for you since you always degrade our best players and coach all the time. Get over yourself, this is a good solid team and we can contend this year.

Bringing Carlyle into the fold isn't a "threat"

As I said, put him in the front office. Let him work with scouts, or prospect development, or whatever you want to call it. Heck, offer him a job as an analyst for MSG to start. Just get him into the fold. He brings a history of success, prospect development, and a strong PP to the organization. There’s no salary cap on coaches, or the player development budget, and MSG has the cash to spend in these areas. If we want to develop “our guys” in “our system” we need to have some faces around that these young players know, and are familiar with, that we can plug in IF a change needs to be made behind the bench. Ken Gerander isn’t really an NHL guy, the only real assistant is Sully, and he would probably be gone BEFORE Torts. Shoeny has already made it clear he WON’T go back behind the bench. You don’t expect to get in a car accident or have your house catch on fire, but you still have insurance. With the $$ MSG has we should have a few policy’s.
