Rangers Vs. Panthers: Rangers Rout Panthers 6-1; Win Second Straight

Photo

The New York Rangers put on quite the performance in front of the Garden crowd tonight, winning 6-1 over the Florida Panthers. This was a complete team effort tonight, and the Rangers cashed in on their opportunities. Derek Stepan had a great night, scoring two goals, and adding an assist.

After an early penalty coming from Steve Eminger, the Rangers got their chance to work the power play. Brad Richards was able to convert on the second power play for the Rangers. Richards made a great little fake, moved in closer, and scored off a great wrist shot over the shoulder of Jose Theodore. Just five minutes later, the Rangers would get their third chance on the power play, and converted once again.

This time it came from Artem Anisimov who converted on a rebound in front of the net. It was a great play by Anton Stralman to get the puck down to Anisimov, who fed Erik Christensen who hit the post, which led to the rebound. Under a minute later, the Panthers were able to cut into the Rangers lead off a goal coming from Erik Gudbranson for his first career NHL goal.

Follow after the jump for more.

Star-divide

The Rangers came out with their absolute best period of the season, with an explosive four goal effort. Derek Stepan started off the second period with a great individual effort and beat Theodore with an absolute snipe. Stepan fought off three different Panthers on his way to scoring his sixth goal of the season.

Just five minutes later, Steve Eminger notched his second of a season with a great shot through a screen. Carl Hagelin was the main contributing factor as he flew into the zone, and dug out the puck to Brian Boyle. Marian Gaborik cashed in on another rebound given up by Theodore and that made it 5-1 Rangers.

Although, five was not enough for this hungry Rangers team, and Derek Stepan cashed in for his second goal of the evening, on yet another rebound in front of Theodore. The Rangers went into the locker room with a very commanding 6-1 lead, and the Panthers were all but out of this one.

To start the third period the Panthers made a goaltender change, and Scott Clemmensen relieved Jose Theordore between the pipes. The Rangers continued their dominance, but Clemmensen made a few spectacular saves and turned the Rangers away. Derek Stepan had a golden opportunity to finish off the hat trick, but Clemmensen turned him away once again.

The Rangers had a great penalty kill tonight, as well as a power play. The Rangers killed off all seven of the power play they gave the Panthers tonight, and cashed in twice on the power play early on. It also worth mentioning that the Rangers passing was spot on tonight, they were making smart, strong passes all night long.

The Rangers also made the job of Henrik Lundqvist very easy tonight, as they played solid defensively tonight in front of him. Although, there were some points where he had to make some key saves. Anton Stralman also had a strong game for the Rangers, and also made some great plays in the offensive end, and even contributed his first point as a Ranger.

The Rangers will be back home this Tuesday against the Dallas Stars starting at 7:00 PM. Below are tonight's three stars of the game, along with the Broadway Hat recipient.

MDZ and Eminger +4 tonight!

Both are stepping up huge on the second pairing in Staal and Sauer’s absences. MDZ a +15 on the season is no fluke—outside of one or two miscues both of them played a fairly solid game.

Stepan with a huge game was completely deserving of the first star, and most likely the Broadway Hat as well. With the way Florida was playing, you would think that they were on the tail end of a back-to-back instead of us.

My only gripes with this game was Prust fighting (needlessly) when we were already up by at least four goals and Del Zotto going for the big hit behind our net (and missing) instead of playing the puck that was 5 feet from a near-stationary forward.

Great game overall. We are able to keep sustained pressure in the offensive zone quite a few times during the game, and big plays in the neutral zone (and stepping up at the blue line) prevented Florida from taking advantage of manpower on the rush both even strength and on the penalty kill.

Great effort by all the Rangers (even EC at times) for a home back on the tail end of a back-to-back.

In the last sentence, “home back” should be “home game”, I don’t know what happened there.

He’s been good but +15 is a little inflated for him. He should be closer to +4 based on the consistency of his game. Glad to see that he’s stepping it up though; hopefully he earns his gaudy stats.

Take it to the net and keep jamming and jamming until somebody comes on you.

He’s got all the potential to be a very very good player. Between MDZ, Erixon, and Wrath it would be fantastic if 2 of them could turn out good for us.

What a group of 6 on defense.

I think he’s earned them… he’s playing 2nd pairing minutes… killing penalties on one of the best defensive teams in the league which was missing one of the Best Shutdown defensemen… and now with Sauer out his play hasn’t faltered… which shows that Sauer and him were equal in their contributions defensively at worst… yes +/- is not a great scale of how a player is actually playing, but he has become much more responsible and he’s just now beginning to bring his offensive game back… There is much more yet to come from DZ… His confidence is at an all-time and he has every reason to be confident…

Should be +4?

I’m not sure I understand that comment. If he wasn’t consistent and wasn’t playing solid defensively, he wouldn’t be +15. It’s as simple as that. Not too mention, he’s hitting like a truck. his overall game has vastly improved. My ONLY complaint with him last night was that he went around the net instead of in front of the net when he went in all alone on the left sidfe in the 3rd period. I was waiting for him to cut in front and take a shot and instead he chose to skate behind the net and lost any chance at an offensive opportunity in doing so.

Frankly that’s my biggest concern with MDZ atm as well. The kid really needs to shoot more.

he’s undersized… which is why he stuggled in the Atlantic last year when he was traded to the Flyers and why he struggled when he played for the leafs… granted the leafs were a bad team last year… He’s a small shifty speed guy if he utilizes his speed the right way he can create scoring chances but when you are constantly being grinded down shift in and shift out as the Atlantic tends to do those legs seem to disappear…

Maybe DZ’s stats are a bit inflated but I just took a look at his previous season and a half and he really is looking like he’s breaking out of his mold and really showing his potential..poised to have a career season and although +/- can be a little iffy clearly he’s doing something right to have a +15..good for him, every game I watch I love what he does more and more.

by Kevin Papa on Dec 11, 2011 10:41 PM EST reply actions

when you look at his Total GF/GA he’s doing even better
GF – 40
PPGF – 12
GA- 15
PPGA – 2

so including special teams he’s +25 lol. But honestly after seeing Woywitka and Stralman back there, I am glad to have MDZ back there. His offense is showing signs of coming back too.

Although I’d love to stop hearing “MDZ shoots…aaaand it misses the net, around the boards and out of the zone…aaaand all the way down the ice.”

Hear that once per PP it seems, tonight he hit the net, made a rebound, and bam goal.

I've never seen our defense this deep....

…..maybe ever.

We lost Staal for who knows how long…thought we were sunk. We lose Sauer twice……but we are getting better.

Everyone we plug in works out…..even Stralman. I was like, who the f**k is this? And whaddya know the guy can play. Eminger has been steadier and steadier; Woywitka won’t hurt us, he’s been good. Del Zotto has made me look the fool as he has completely stepped up.

I don’t know what the rest of the year holds but I want to say, its been a pleasure to be a Ranger fan this year. We are deep and resilient; the effort this team shows most nights is an inspiration and a testament to the organizational depth, smart scouting, good signings and a great coach who knows the team.

I had my doubts about Torts but they are all but erased as I feel if anything he knows this team. His hunches have been spot on line-up wise. He’s not afraid to plug in rookies and look what he’s done with Hagelin; gives him the PK the other night and holy crap!

The tools are in place; now just imagine we get Staal and Sauer back for the second half of the season.

Go Rangers.

im excited. it’s great to not be going win, loss, win, loss, win, loss. We finally have consistentcy and our “bad games” only last 1 or 2 games then we string together some wins.

Wonderful season so far.
