Rangers Vs. Stars: New York Rangers Need To Avoid The Trap Game
The New York Rangers have been playing some great hockey over the last several months. Although, there have been some lag during some points, the Rangers have always found a way to rebound with some big wins. A perfect example is the current two-game winning streak the Rangers currently hold.
After dropping some close games to the Toronto Maple Leafs, and Tampa Bay Lightning, the Rangers came out flying the next two games. They even outscored their opponents 10-2 in the process. Tonight they will face-off against the third place Dallas Stars, which could have trap game written all over it.
Coming off a big 6-1 win over the Florida Panthers on Sunday night, the Rangers need to carry over the momentum. However, the Stars are currently without their starter, Kari Lehtonen, due to a groin injury. While that may take a little pressure off, the Stars are still a solid team, and the Rangers cannot afford to sit back.
Follow after the jump for more.
With all that said, the Rangers need to continue their success and keep up the intensity. The Rangers have been getting a ton of secondary scoring from their defensemen, and second/third line forwards this season. They need to continue to do so, and avoid being trapped into a loss.
Tonight would be yet another step for the Rangers to take this season, as they have already beaten three tough opponents in the East, and two of those being in their division. It will be interesting to see how they respond after coming off of a big win at home.

As long as week keep our plays moving through the neutral zone the trap won’t be a factor… the trap is only a factor when you allow the other team to set it up… ala the flyers…
@clalicata17
It was more pointed towards avoiding a loss in a game that they should win. Not the actual trap system haha.

ahh… well the rangers have followed 2 losses with a win-streak consistently in the recent past…

You guys need to visit defendingbigd stars blog, comments about NYR are hilarious. They’re still stuck on “our checkbook and bloated contract”
Think they need to recheck our payroll although I guess that’s just cap floor envy.
LGR!

The blog itself is good, just the comments are funny.
I liked reading this excerpt from their game day preview blog post:
“Collecting stats about the New York Rangers feels oddly like collecting stats on the Sharks the last many years… They’re obnoxiously good and accomplished in nearly every category.”
Hope the rangers bring their A game tonight!

do they remember that they signed avery to that bloated contract that we helped them 1/2 way out of?

Nobody mentions Brad Richards first game against his former team? You bet we are gonna be ready tonight, were going to blow their doors wide open, Im calling for 5+ goals from us…

Because we signed Brad Richards, and they didn’t

Also anybody see the NHL fined Downie $2,500 for “…coming off the bench in a legal line change to become involved in an altercation in New York last Thursday.” or something like that lol.

So much for an automatic 10 game suspension
by Blueshirts Rock on Dec 13, 2011 1:50 PM EST up reply actions
I could make an argument that the change was already made as the player leaving the ice was @ the bench and Downie already had his feet over the boards. It’s obviously a very subjective decision that was never going to be written in stone.
You could make an argument…
but if you watch the tape, you see the dude fly off the bench the second a scrap brakes out, and charge straight at AA.
"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
NHL Network
Funny thing about that, I was watching NHL Network this morning and it said ‘Downie fined $2,500 for coming off the bench in an altercation during Monday’s game vs the Devils’

Does not get a penalty in the game
or a suspension. Does not feel right.
-Giants-I bELIeve in this team. Playoffs are in sight all they have to do is fight for it. Keep Baas on the sidelines.
-Rangers-I like to think back to when Thorton called the Rangers soft and LOL! The FAs the Rangers have gotten are nice but this team has built its strength from within.

I agree the Rangers need to come out flying tonight
However, I do not see how this is a trap game? This game is far from an automatic win/getting a point. I thought a trap game is when we are playing a team who is in last place or pretty close to it.
OUCH MY ELBOW HURTS!
They have 33 pts, they’re in the playoffs only because they lead their division
by teknics on Dec 13, 2011 12:57 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Not that they’re horrible. But their starting goalie is out and apparently their top 6 are struggling to score consistently
by teknics on Dec 13, 2011 12:59 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
What scares me is that the Rangers have a history of making backup goaltenders look like Hasek.
That being said, Rangers will complete the week of NY breaking hearts in Dallas with two late goals and win 3-2.
The second goal will come on a Rangers penalty shot, Torts will call timeout and ice the goaltender.

Avery....
Is torts going with Avery or EC tonight?….EC didnt play awful the other night but do you give Avery a shot at his former team?
He does like to play when he gets paid by two teams.

A trap game is....
A game you should win against a weaker opponent but overlook due to the “trap game” being followed by a strong, rival opponent. I don’t think this applies, UNLESS you consider the next 3 “trap games” to be followed by a struggling NJ opponent, but that is a stretch.
This has the making of being a very interesting game with enough “back-stories” to light the fire. BR’s former team, Avery’s situation here, Dallas being a 3rd place West coast team, etc. A let down is very possible but not because of the next opponent, St. Louis, just because it lacks conference appeal.
It’s all on Tort’s, and to lesser extent Cally and BR, to make sure the fire is lit.
From what I've read
Dallas has a rookie goalie going tonight, the Rangers need to get pucks on him early and often to get the kid rattled…Rangers historically have had trouble doing that with rookie goalies

Oh I know, I’m just seeing he’s a super-fresh rookie so he’s barely up to NHL speed I’d imagine. So hopefully we can get him off his game

Bet the under..Ranger jinx with rookie goalies predates Al Gore inventing the internet.
This has 2-1 nail biter written all over it with both goalies.

Feels like a 4-1 type of win for NYR
based on how both teams are playing.

I was at the Panthers game Sunday
Watching this team work on the ice made me realize just how different this team is from last season. If they make this game another convincing win, I can firmly believe this team is a cup contender.
This has nothing to do with the stars but...
Fuck concussions. The Atlantic is being ravaged by them. Crosby getting his post concussion symptoms now, Staal still out, and now Giroux…not to mention Sauer, hopefully his isn’t as serious as the others.
Proudly suffering as a Ranger fan.
Letang, and Pronger as well.

Why start this year? Lindros, LaFontaine, Richter, Beuleboom, Savard, Al Toon,…
by It may HAVE to Last a Lifetime on Dec 13, 2011 3:54 PM EST up reply actions
It just seems the concussions this year are more severe and too all star players. Crosby is Crosby, Giroux was leading the NHL in points, Staal is one of the best defensive defenseman, also as George mention, Letang is one of the best offensive defenseman, and Pronger is obviously Pronger.
Those are game breaking stars and they’re ALL out for an extended period of time, not only does this blow, but it hurts the NHL so much also.
Proudly suffering as a Ranger fan.
It’s better now than it was. Scott Stevens is not a Hall of Famer now—he’s a “repeat offender.” Concussions have always been around but players still played and also we didn’t hear about them.

i'd put richter's in a different category
that was a rocket slap shot off his helmet which caused a fractures skull and a concussion, the others were caused by body checks
