New York Rangers News: Rangers Recall Tim Erixon
The New York Rangers have announced they have recalled Tim Erixon from the Connecticut Whale.
It remains to be seen where Erixon will fit into the equation, and it should be noted he is coming off an injury down in Connecticut. Still, the young defenseman has a goal and 11 assists for 12 points in 13 games. He's been impressive down in the AHL, and the Rangers' brass obviously saw something they wanted to change with the big club, and Erixon was the answer.
I don't see why Erixon won't play against the St. Louis Blues on Thursday, if he wasn't going to play then it wouldn't make sense to call him up right now. If, however, Erixon was called up to simply be a precaution then he could be sent back down in time for the Whale's next game (against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers) on Friday. But John Tortorella has admitted to not being a fan of having spare parts hang around, so I do expect Erixon to see some time.
Thoughts on all this guys?
Rangers official press release after the jump.
NEW YORK RANGERS TRANSACTION UPDATE
Tim Erixon Recalled from Connecticut
New York, December 14, 2011 - New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that defenseman Tim Erixon has been recalled from the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League (AHL).
Erixon, 20, has registered one goal and 11 assists for 12 points, along with 10 penalty minutes in 13 games with Connecticut this season. He currently has a three-game assist streak, tallying four assists during the stretch which began with a two-assist effort on Friday vs. Hershey. Erixon leads all Whale defensemen and is tied for sixth on the team in scoring with 12 points, and ranks second on Connecticut overall in average points per game (0.92) and is tied for third in assists (11). He registered seven points in a five-game span (one goal and six assists), beginning with his first career AHL goal on November 12 at St. John's and culminating with a career-high, three assists on November 23 vs. Portland. Erixon tallied an assist while making his AHL debut on November 2 at Bridgeport.
The Port Chester, New York native began the season on the Rangers opening night roster, and skated in nine games with the Blueshirts before being assigned to Connecticut on October 29. Erixon posted a plus or even rating in six of his nine contests. He made his NHL debut on October 7 against Los Angeles in Stockholm, Sweden, as part of the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Premiere.
Erixon was acquired by the Rangers along with a fifth round selection in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft (Shane McColgan) from Calgary, in exchange for Roman Horak and two second round picks in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft (Markus Granlund, Tyler Wotherspoon) on June 1, 2011. He was originally selected by the Flames in the first round, 23rd overall, in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

Maybe
Woywitka has been solid this year though

Might this have something to do with Sauer’s noggin? If they’re calling up Erixon I don’t expect to see Sauer back too soon, unfortunately.
Manning lobs it, Burress alone, touchdown New York!
For the empty net, Mark Messier... do you believe it?! Do you believe it?! He said we will win game 6 - he has just picked up the hat trick!
Did Woywitka specifically get sent down?
I didn’t see his name in there. Seems this has more to do with Eminger being hit with a puck twice and having grapefruit sized welts on his hand and ass
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
No one got sent down
I might be precautionary, it might be a replacement move.

I do not think it is necessarily bad news for either our injured players or our 5-6th man. We are going on a road trip and probably want insurance. If god forbid something happened to another D man in the St. Louis game, you don’t want to be scrambling to get someone to Phoenix last minute.
We will see. Perhaps they want to evaluate Erixon’s progress.
I didn't think the Rangers had room under the cap to fit Erixon
unless they let someone go
I believe the LTIR space is enough to allow it.

Feels forced..dont know why.
You don’t bring him up without expecting him to play. He was putting up lots of PP points with CT and was an even player. I’m assuming they have been watching his play closely (as they did Hagelin) and feel its time.
But i think the Woywitka brain fart and Sauer’s negative outlook made them do this earlier than they wanted.
Again, just one douchebags opinion here.

Folks...
A trade could be coming. Staal is getting closer, albeit little by little. But, Sather sees that there is depth on this team, and some “house money” with a sure division and conference contender the Rangers have become.
Teams in both conferences have players in need of new homes (Ryan, Beauchamin, Semin, Penner, etc). It may be time to take the depth out for a spin, and make a deal. Clear some cap, and bring in a midseason addition to balance the lines and fold up the constant shuttling guys in and out of the lineup.

not at all, who are we going to trade thats a dman? Eminger, Woywitka, or Stralman? nobody would trade for them.

Less fingers, more eyes and ears, My Friend.
I did not name any specific names that we’re going after, although we’re all aware of the players we’re suggested and have heard rumors about.
The point I was making was that when you look at the constant need to put players on LTIR so often, that there are players who happen to be available who happen to be quite durable. And, perhaps given our depth and some of the moves already made by this GM (as well as throughout the league), it may be time to move towards one of them. IMO, that move should be for one more forward.

Well, either one of the current six has a nagging injury or something new we didn’t notice last game, or somebody’s getting sat down.
At this point it’s either Woywitka or Stralman, as I think Eminger has actually played the best of the 3. Shame if it’s Woywikta because of one bad play (the clear AND his coverage coming back into the zone).
Its a way to light a fire under the D’s ass just like avery was brought back to light a fire under EC’s and the whole teams ass(es).
Torts said in the postgame yesterday that it was such an even game that it was about ‘who would blink first’ and well we did, errrr woywitka did.
But yes, the road trip comes into effect too. Its easier to call up and extra D right now then when your in st louis.
And if he does go in its for woywitka, not stralman. He had such a soolid gane yesterday, he should get more playing time from here on out, at least for the next few games before taking him out if necessary.

3 possible scenarios
1. Erixon called up for depth on the current road trip
2. Eminger’s hand/arm is worse than originally thought
3. Woywitka has fallen out of favor for his lack of speed/ lack of trust late in the game
@clalicata17
it’s almost 100% certainly a depth move… because of the road trip… I assume he plays… but we could be wrong… I think they’d have called up another defense-men to sit in the box, but maybe torts doesn’t trust any other dmen.
@clalicata17
I like Erixon and I wouldnt mind seeing him take Woywitka’s spot but I don’t think it would be because of how he dropped the ball the other game. Torts, while seemingly a nightmare of a coach and a hardass, seems to be willing to forgive and move on if the mistake isnt egregious and rare in occurrence.

The kids
Really like this call up…. I always like the youth movement…. i always rather call up a youngster then go out and sign someone… give the kids expeirence
Good
Maybe Erixon can play well enough that he will stick around even after Sauer and Staal come back. Hopefully they do actually come back healthy and as soon as possible.
-Giants-I bELIeve in this team. Playoffs are in sight all they have to do is fight for it. Keep Baas on the sidelines.
-Rangers-I like to think back to when Thorton called the Rangers soft and LOL! The FAs the Rangers have gotten are nice but this team has built its strength from within.

I’m growing more concerned with this whole concussion thing… with Crosby taking a regular hit and now having re-occurring problems… Staal’s going to be out probably until after the trade deadline, and if he comes back there’s no certainty he won’t take a hit and have a set-back… not looking good…
@clalicata17
I am also pretty worried about Staal
and even Sauer. I thought McDonagh possibly received a concussion the other night when he went full speed into the boards. These concussions are no laughing matter.

it seems like concussions are becoming a season ending injury that requires, at minimum, a year off.

not surprising, but very unfortunate.

I think this will foster some competition between Stralman/Woywitka/Emmy (and now Erixon) to ensure that the guys we have out there are playing at the top of their games. Emmy had a played solid the last few games from what I remember.

With our situation being what it is, I hope they called up Erixon to play him
Pretty sure that if we had traveled with 6 D, and someone got hurt, we would have been able to recall our replacement defenseman on “Emergency Recall”. Emergency Recall lets you skirt waivers, and pretty sure the cap as well, meaning IF we needed another defenseman because of injury we could have called up Wade Redden.
The biggest problem with Redden was his cap hit, at the same price he’d be as good, if not a better option then Em, Stalman, or Woywitka. Add in the fact that if he’d up on emergency recall, then someone else is hurt, and I think his experience (both as a professional, and working with the young guys in Hartford) becomes even more valuable to team.
Erixon is up just for an extra man
Eminger might get the night off tomorrow.
Proudly suffering as a Ranger fan.
