SPOILER ALERT

Tonight's episode started off with a bang, showing the most recent list to the Toronto Maple Leafs. It highlighted both the injuries to Michael Sauer and Michael Del Zotto. It's also worth noting that it only took just under a minute for the first F-bomb to drop this year.

We switched over the Flyers side just ten minutes into the episode, and we found the highlight of the night, Ilya Bryzgalov. He started off talking about how everyone warned him about signing in Philadelphia, because it was a "miserable market for goalies." Probably the biggest highlight of the night was Bryzgalov going into a very detailed astronomy lesson about the universe.

Again, we switched back over the Rangers side of the story. Henrik Lundqvist, Brian Boyle, and Brandon Prust accompanied Garden of Dreams children to Radio City Music Hall. Right off the bat, Prust start picking on Henrik Lundqvist by saying, "Henke watch your hair!" It was than switched over to Sean Avery's photo shoot, where we saw what he did when he wasn't playing hockey.

Back to Philadelphia we go. We started off by seeing a re-uniting of Max Talbot and past coach of Talbot, Dan Blysma. Followed by that, we heard Jagr's decision to sign in Philadelphia this past summer, and told us that "he just followed his heart." Scott Hartnell finished it off with a comment towards Matt Cooke after a scrum, "You're the dirtiest player in the league, great job bud."

We finally got around the main event of the evening, Artem Anisimov's "sniper" celebration. Immediately Anisimov started saying something to the ref in Russian, and honestly, I wish I knew what he said. It was followed by a Brandon Dubinsky screaming match in the penalty box at the ref as well. At intermission, Sean Avery, followed by Marian Gaborik both glared over at Anisimov with a big grin. Anisimov followed with a comment of "Just reload my weapon, you know?" While the it was all funny to us, John Tortorella was not pleased with his teams performance.

Artem Anisimov apologized after the game, to the entire team following his celebration earlier in the game. It was a great gesture by Anisimov, and he definitely gained my full respect after that.

Finally, we were able to witness the first Ranger victory of 24/7, with the 4-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres. Ryan Callahan's parents were in attendance for this one. However, the night before the Rangers gathered in a nearby restaurant for a team dinner. The Rangers have a rather, unique way, of deciding who gets to pay. The team puts everyone's credit card into a hat, and the final two cards that remain are left to pay for the bill. This time around, Jeff Woywitka and Henrik Lundqvist were left to pay the bill.

The final segment feature the most recent injury to Claude Giroux. Over the time, we witnessed some of the concussion tests Giroux took in order to give the results. After numerous tests, it was revealed that Giroux had a concussion, and would be sidelined indefinitely.

The next 24/7 episode will air next Wednesday at 10:00, followed by a re-run at 11:00. Hope everyone enjoy it!

Loved the intro montage to the Rangers set to the Black Keys’ Lonely Boy!

Great stuff for sure! :)

My takeaways so far:

Cool insight into how players feel even more so than how they play.

Bryzgalov has a future career in PBS broadcasting.

Thought it almost too “Beginning’s”-like with Cally until the scene with his Grandma. WOW! Thought Artie’s apology was heartfelt as well.

Coaches? So far, I’ll take Lav over Torts. He seems way more positive, level headed and upbeat. Torts wonders why guys (i.e. Dubi) bitch about calls? Look in the f**kin’ mirror! But I still must say that the Artie-call linesman’s BS “I don’t have to give you a reason” was way outta line. That’s insubordination in any other line of work!

And so far at least, NYR is being portrayed like a bunch of over-paid, potentially soft “Apollo Creeds” riding around in limos or with Aves and his photo shoot while the F’ers are being portrayed more as the blue-collar, underdog “Rockys”. Cally is our only exception. We’ll see if that continues.

Otherwise, can’t wait for next week! :)

i kinda feel like we go the underdog part a little more..

I felt like the flyers were potrayed more as a team that has a whole lot of expectations with a totally differant team. They spoke about how good the flyers were a good portion of the time is what im saying rightfully so they have been good for a while now.

Flyers fan so obviously biased

But here’s my impression. I reckon the Rangers were portrayed as the underdogs, and that was sort of inevitable given the Flyers were 3-0 over the period they were filming over. It definitely seemed like the Flyers have more expectations. However the injury to Roux sort of put a dampener on things there so we’ll see how it looks next episode.

However – and I’m not trolling, just saying what I saw with orange-tinted lenses – I think the Flyers were portrayed in a more positive light overall. Not saying the Flyers are better people or anything like that, and I’m not a movie analyst, but if you look at some of the background themes and music it just feels like the Flyers are more light and upbeat and the Rangers are more dark and heavy. Torts appeared a lot more intense than Laviolette. The Flyers had a couple of extended segments involving kids vs. the Rangers’ one segment with kids so that might have skewed things. Also the Rangers had the Tampa episode which had its lighter side to it but also exposed a lot of the personnel at their angriest. In contrast, the Flyers had that positive post-game dancing celebrating after the Penguins win, and last of all the Flyers had Bryz to steal the show from some of the more uninteresting players (at least in interviews) like JVR.

I’d say Simmonds and Callahan came off most positively as people after this episode though. That’s just my opinion. Bryz is funny but honestly I worry about whether the Flyers locker room gets him or not. How many hockey players look at their lives in the perspective of the universe?

Simon Gagne AND Mike Richards may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, they will both always be Philadelphia Flyers.

One day Sean Couturier will win the Conn Smythe. You heard it here first.

I was gonna say: was I the only one who thought the Flyers came off much more positively or sympathetic?
I loved everything they showed of our blueshirts, but felt that if an casual fan, or newcomer were to watch, they’d leave with a better impression of the flyers – do specifically to the filmmaking.

Agreed AND...

ironic considering the whole Broad Street Bullies history is out there, and yet NY looked like the “meaner” team.

by mgweissman on Dec 15, 2011 8:04 AM EST up reply actions

Good point...

Oh, I agree from a hockey expectations perspective. My favorite/underdog comment was based more on how the two team’s overall persona was portrayed rather than their stats or history. In other words, how someone watching this more as an HBO melodrama might view it, not as an avid hockey fan. That’s all. :)

To your coaches point – I’m almost certain that Torts views it as ‘his job’ to complain to refs, not the players. Its like a fatherly attitude: “Leave that to me” type of thing.
It makes sense too – players are more likely to be penalized for barking at the refs, and Torts most often does a great job of not crossing the line into bench penalty behavior.

Hank and Woywitka had to pay the bill. Otherwise, solid recap.

Re: the comment above about linesmen/refs and the lack of explanation. Happens at all levels of play, from youth and up. Not saying it is right, just the way it is.

The true secret to success as an NHL sniper these days, have a beer or two the night before a game, surely worked for Gabby lol.

"What's that your 6th beer Gabby? You have a game tomorrow!"

"I was reloading my weapon"- Artem Anisimov on 24/7
"Your the dirtiest player in the league!"- Scott Hartnell to Matt Cooke
"The universe is big....." -Ilya Bryzgalov

not enough Dubi and Girardi and i think they didnt show as much pregame and postgame footage on the rangers side in particular as they did last season. But overall thought it was a great episode. Loved Torts ripping Gabby a new one leading to a goal, its as if HBO wrote it.

by leetch2 on Dec 15, 2011 6:48 AM EST reply actions

Like the Gabby thing too but

they should have showed the bonehead play he made that led to that (when he went 1 on 3 just inside the blueline and gave it up for a goal the other way). That seemed like something basic that was left out to give the viewer some context b/c when Gabby did that, my first thought was Torts is gonna glue him to the bench. But then MG came back and played great in the 3rd and scored that beautiful roofer. :)

And yes, too, about Girardi, considering how funny he was in the preview.

But, lots made of F’ers / Pronger injuries yet nothing about Staal? What’s up with THAT? :(

Avery’s like the kid in class who tries to corrupt all the goody-goody kids into doing evil things. That’s an impish “I got one!”
