Rangers Vs. Coyotes: Rangers Finish Coyotes Off With Late Goal
The New York Rangers got back into the win column tonight, with a very close 3-2 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes. This game came down to the final seconds, and I mean that literally. Brad Richards scored with .1 seconds left in the game, and gave the Rangers the win.
The Rangers struck first, just eight minutes into the game, with a breakaway goal coming Marian Gaborik. Michael Del Zotto made a great stretch pass to Gabby, who broke in alone. Gaborik finished it off with a shot that beat Mike Smith through the five-hole. However, with just nine seconds left in the first period, ex-Ranger, Lauri Korpikoski tied the game up on a quick shot off of the face-off.
The Rangers have been giving up some late period goals, which have ended up costing them in past games. Again, with a very back and forth period, the Coyotes were able to capitalize once again in the final minute of play, this time coming from Cal O'Reilly. It seemed as if Martin Biron had the puck covered on the play, but Shane Doan was able to poke it loose.
Follow after the jump for more.
The Rangers started the third period, down by a goal, but it wasn't long before the game was tied. Keith Yandle made a terrible turn over, while the Yotes were making a line change. It slipped out in front to the wide open Gaborik who was denied by Smith on the first attempt, but roofed the rebound.
With just under three minutes to play in regulation, the Rangers had a great chance to put home the game winner, but just fell short. Finally, the Rangers established great pressure in the final ten seconds, which led to a last ditch effort by Brad Richards. Richards threw the puck at the net, and somehow got under the arm of Smith. However, the play would be reviewed, and eventually was ruled a goal, as the puck officially crossed the line at the .1 second mark.
It's worth nothing that Marian Gaborik notched his 300th career goal in this game, and currently leads the Rangers with 27 total points. Also, the Rangers lost Steve Eminger to a shoulder injury in the first period, and he did not return.
With this win, Marty Biron picked up his sixth win of the season, which improves him to 6-1-1 this season. Overall, it was a much better game by the Rangers, and their offense is finally back on track. Mike Rupp also had a solid game in his return from his knee injury he suffered earlier in the season. He was finishing his checks, and even had a couple scoring opportunities this game. Solid game by him as well.
The Rangers next game will be this upcoming Tuesday against the New Jersey Devils at 7:00 PM. Here are tonight's three stars, as well as the recipient of the Broadway Hat.

You’ve got Marian Gaborik’s name under the picture of Richards for the Broadway Hat.

Made out like like bandits stealing those points
With Eminger’s injury I’m going to sense Erixon gets called up. While the extent of Eminger’s injury is unknown it looked like a pretty bad hit he took.
We really need our offense to get going as we really had very little sustained pressure these past few games.
Also, our power play was shit again. But that’s nothing new.

Any idea what dubi was doing towards the end of the game in the offensive zone when the coyote was playing the puck three feet away from him? he literally, was standing still. i said it on a couple of my fan posts and ill say it again. this guy held out a few years ago and would have again if we didn’t over pay him. we will never win anything with 4 million of our cap space going to dubi.
GREAT ENDING TO THIS GAME THOUGH!! Any idea what the record is for last second gwg’s?
Probably .1 seconds
done multiple times I’m sure

I thought his contract was very reasonable. I somewhat remember seeing the situation you were talking about, and from what I can remember the PHX already had plenty of space and time and clearly was going to clear it, could be wrong though my memory is a bit hazy. You do have to give Dubi credit for getting the sequence going that lead to the BR goal. He got the stretch pass that came from our d-zone (granted Dubi was just sitting on the far blueline) brought it down low with very good puck protection and held it till everyone got set up in the zone.

This is a memorable win!!
It happens,,0.1 second…mysterious,..devine power!!Go Rangers!!
YES!

What a game! It was looking shaky for awhile there, but they got the win thanks to some good fore-checking efforts in the 3rd period. Richards had been shut down almost all night, but started coming alive in the final period and got that goal. Unbelievable. Sam Rosen was going nuts when they made it official, his voice was so passionate. That was awesome. The game was awesome.
Biron with yet another win, but his rebound control tonight was scary. So many loose pucks around the crease, kicking off pads, and squirting through skates. It was a game that I don’t think the Rangers necessarily deserved to win but damn am I glad they did. Let’s go Rangers!

The injuries are mounting and they’re sort of running on fumes it looks like. It’s been a brutal month. Just get to the Winter Classic in the top 8. Then hopefully Staal, Eminger, and Sauer (or at least two of them) come back.
Great win. This guy Richards is what we hoped Drury would be. Clutch.

Actually, reports out of Tampa claim that after being so winded from the game agst St. Louis, he was just too shot to play. :)
Not bad – but hang on to your day job for now – lol.

AA was sick and out. Another D down, oy. 3 games in a row now they have lacked the fire they had before. They could be tired or the Avery factor is at work. I’m not a big fan but you can’t argue they way the team plays physically when he’s in the line up. Results matter, not little egos.
It also helps when the two guys the team invested about $100M in produce like they’re supposed to.

yep, although BR has been less than stellar the last few games even though he got the winning goal. That play was all Dubi.

wheres dubi
can anybody tell me what dubi and bolye are on the rr when they should nnot even be playing
Does it really matter who’s on the 2nd power play unit most of the time? Richards, Cally, Gaborik and Stepan have the bulk of the Rangers PP goals. If they’re not scoring the PP usually isn’t going to score.

Dubi’s got more points than anyone in the lineup not already on the 1st PP. Who else are you putting on the 2nd unit?

Did the karate chop goal signal all throughout the replay where they showed the puck crossing the line with .01
@btown46
