New York Rangers Practice Notes: Tim Erixon Recalled; Injury Updates

Photo

The New York Rangers announced today that defenseman Tim Erixon was recalled on an emergency basis. Jeff Woywitka suffered an ankle injury in the Phoenix game on Saturday, and is a game time decision for tomorrow night. Tim Erixon will only be in the line-up if Woywitka cannot play against New Jersey.

Also, Steve Eminger, who suffered a separated shoulder on Saturday as well, will miss 8-10 weeks and Stu Bickel will be in tomorrow night. Tortorella also commented on the status of Michael Sauer, who began light workouts this week. Torts stated that while Sauer has begun workouts again, they will still be without him for quite some time.

Marc Staal also participated in regular team drills today, and is hoping to be cleared for contact in the next few days. This is great news for Marc Staal, and the Rangers as well. It was another huge step in the recovery process for Staal, but concussions are still very unpredictable.

WOW. Eminger has been great this year too, another killer blow. I can’t believe they’re holding it down as well as they have been without several of their big D-men.

Pierre McGuire needs to go away.

I wouldn’t say great, but yes, better than expected.

If McDonagh/Del Zotto didn’t step up who knows what would have happened so far this season.

I have a feeling that Staal will be back sometime in January but that Sauer may be out for months. Sigh. Seriously, tomorrow it could be Staal, Sauer, Eminger, AND Woywitka all out , if we can weather this storm for the next month then we should all be true believers…

This is just absurd.

Girardi McD
MDZ Stralman
Erixon Bickel?

Yuck… Girardi and McD play 30 minutes each for sure.

With MDZ, Stralman, and Erixon around, Girardi should get zero PP time. They can’t afford to burn his minutes there.

yup

Shoot the puck Barry!!!

they have limited time during practices to work on their passing. So, they take those 2 minutes during games very seriously to work on real game-time passing drills.

by OhCallyMyCaptain on Dec 19, 2011 2:21 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed. Although thats dependent on us actually getting PP time…

Injuries

Devils have 3 rookie Dmen playing too so we can’t create excuses. Next man up – hopefully. Better this happen now than in March.

Manning lobs it, Burress alone, touchdown New York!
For the empty net, Mark Messier... do you believe it?! Do you believe it?! He said we will win game 6 - he has just picked up the hat trick!

NHL.com has Eminger out 8-10 weeks……..

Never mind, read this article and somehow passed over the 8-10 weeks part my bad.

He played some D at Boston College one year when their blueline was hit hard by injuries. I doubt he is a legitimate option though for the Rangers.

Girardi, McD
MDZ, Stralman
Erixon, Bickel

I think seeing how MDZ plays without Sauer will show a lot about how much he’s developed, and where his confidence is at. I’m worried about that 3rd pairing, but hey, great news on the Staal front.

That which does not kill you...

I’m staying optimistic. The Rangers will endure this clusterfuck and be better for it. With a little luck (please hockey gods, just a little) Staal and Sauer will return to form and no one will register a goal against the Rangers for the months of March through June.

all kidding aside, i think its really a blessing. having these guys go down has taught this team responsibility and teamwork from the top forward down to the 7th d man. mcd has been awesome and i really believe his learning curve has been greatly accelerated playing top pair minutes with girardi. its been great to watch these young guys grow and learn the game and i trully believe that we will wether the storm relatively unscathed and be a much better hockey team because of it

Anyone see staal coming back for the winter classic? 2 years in a row where a staal brother (did you know there’s 4 of them) makes his return from a lengthy injury during the winter classic.

If he does, its because he’s ready. Trust me, I know torts hates the cameras and doesn’t give shit about any of the storylines for 24/7 (hes proving it by not putting avery in against the devils, sigh) so if staal is ready to go, its because he’s healthy and in good enoguh condition.

Personally, I think its a chance since he might be cleared in the next few days (2-3 I assume) which gives him almost 11-12 days to catch up to game speed. With all these injuries and based on the results in the next 2 weeks, I wouldbt count him out.

is there any possibility of moving a forward

to the defensive position ?

at this rate Torts may have to

Could Mike Rupp . . .

. . . become the next Jeff Beukeboom?

by cmont on Dec 19, 2011 6:43 PM EST up reply actions

Riddled with concussions..

Prematurely retiring and spending the rest of his life rotating between pissing/shitting himself anytime he rides in the back seat if a car, flies in a plane or goes near a microwave?

What kind of suck animal wishes that on someone? For gods sake its Christmas for Rupp, not just you.

Darren Turcotte did spot duty on D

Gilroy would have come in handy..just saying.

Say what you want...

This team is still finding ways to win with their entire defensive core stripped.

by Callyfan93 on Dec 19, 2011 9:25 PM EST reply actions

The Rangers didn’t call up Erixon due to cap restraints having EC, Avery and Rupp. Because Eminger is out 8-10 weeks and now Woywitka being a possible scratch, does that open up cap space? Or did something else happen that I’m not aware of?

They did something you are not aware of. They put WW and Staal on LTIR last week without making an announcement, opening up space.
