HBO 24/7 Flyers Rangers Episode 2 Recap

NEW YORK, NY - NOVEMBER 26: Henrik Lundqvist #30 of the New York Rangers prepares to tend net against the Philadelphia Flyers at Madison Square Garden on November 26, 2011 in New York City. The Rangers shutout the Flyers 2-0. (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)

*******SPOILER ALERT. SPOILER ALERT. SPOILER ALERT. SPOILER ALERT. SPOILER ALERT.****************

Episode two of HBO's hit 24/7 aired tonight and it delivered on and topped last weeks episode with two new stars shining through and very interesting side of John Tortorella that one would not expect.

The show started off on the off day between the Rangers loss against the Stars and their road trip to St. Louis. Our first segment featured everyone's favorite Swedish goalie Henrik Lundqvist travelling downtown Manhattan to a jam session with tennis legend John McEnroe for a benefit concert in February...because that is what Henrik Lundqvist does on his day off, also, he drives a Maserati.

Next, we visit Dan Girardi's humble abode and meet the first of the two new stars, his 18 month old son Landon Girardi who stole his segment by ignoring his dad and focusing totally on the HBO cameras that were in his room. This is the stuff that HBO excels at; showing the viewers at home the lives of the players and revealing that they are in fact humans (I did not know Dan Girardi had a son).

24/7 then follows the Rangers on their flight to St. Louis and explains that Tortorella scheduled a practice in St. Louis once the plane lands. So HBO does what it does best and shined a light on what goes on behind the scenes. Showing Rangers equipment manager and his staff quickly load the team's gear onto the plane and unloading it once it got to the arena. As Brandon put it in the open thread "HBO can make equipment movement exciting."

After this short segment HBO took us inside Torts' film session, pointing out that Del Zotto was the best defender both offensively and defensively against Dallas, as well as pointing out to Anton Stralman needs to get back and cover a man.

Then came the game against the Blues and we saw John Tortorella tear into his lifeless team with a very motivated and passionate speech and how the Rangers could not find a spark to their game after that speech is beyond me.

After the low point of St. Louis we were introduced to Liam Trainer, a young Rangers fan who suffers from Cerebral Palsy and suddenly...a giant onion and dust cloud settled over New York. Seeing Torts talk about Liam was a real eye opening moment as it showed the real person underneath the hard exterior.

The last Rangers highlight from this episode came from the Phoenix game and the crazy finish that ended with Brad Richards scoring with 0.1 seconds left on the clock. We also got our first shot of the Broadway Hat being passed in the locker room from Gaby to Richards.

Some thoughts after the jump

Star-divide

I really enjoyed Torts in this episode because we saw the different sides to him: The Coach in the film room and during the practice, the Hardass in the locker room trying to wake his team up and the caring man he is when he talks about Liam.

I want Henrik Lundqvist's car, and clothes...and life

Landon Girardi was going to be the breakout star of this episode until HBO introduced us to little Liam. Man, that dust keeps swirling every time I think of that kid.

Ilya Bryzgalov was, well, Bryz. From flashing the camera the cover of a Tolstoy book he was reading on the plane to annoying Jaromir Jagr at the team meal, and comparing his husky to, and I'm not kidding here, "A hot girl".

Overall, I really can't wait for next week's episode as it will highlight the Rangers taking on their division rivals including the Flyers

So guys, what are your thoughts on tonight's episode?

I liked the refs conversation about the chippiness of the game and then between periods about Rupps hit

I love how the Flyers coach ripped into the refs about the bias the refs show in Montreal. It’s so true.

I was actually happy the Flyers won that one.

"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

LET'S GO RANGERS!!!

No doubt about it........

………this is the greatest goddamn sports related thing I’ve ever seen.. Really, I’m thrilled with this show.

But something is happening and I knew it was going to happen. I knew it. The Flyers are getting less diffficult to hate. Now don’t get me wrong. I fuckin hate the Flyers. I just don’t hate THESE Flyers quite as much as I did before seeing 24/7. I guess thats inevitable though right? Here’s some prime examples:

Peter Laviolette: I actually always liked him and I wanted him as our coach; for years. (I am firmly a Torts supporter but apart from John, I really dig Laviolette. I like how he talks to the team and the refs; he’s similar to Torts.

Jaromir Jagr: Well I loved him as a Ranger so the love goes on of course…

Scott Hartnell and Danny Briere: Can’t think of two players I hate more than these guys. But its hard to hate them after this show.

Zac Rinaldo: Oh my lord do I want to see this asshole stomped out every time we play them. Little dirty fuck. Beat his ass every time: Oh wait; he talked about Sega Genesis and playing as Lindros against Jagr. I smile…..I think back……I hate Zac Rinaldo just a little bit less.

Ilya Bryzgalov: I want to party with this guy. I want to hang out with him. (I hope we shellack him every time we play him)…..but christ is he funny.

And the insight into the guys I love, our Rangers? Incredible.

I have this thing where I think Dan Girardi looks like Jim Halpert from the Office (a.k.a. John Krasinski)……..to see that his wife is a brunette named Pam just kills me.

I thought the part with Boyle and Prust waking up from their pre-game nap was hilarious. Boyle sat up in bed like a friggin mess; doesn’t know where his tie is. Brandon just about had to dress him. That shit is priceless. I have a lot in common with Brian Boyle lol….both of us are messes when we wake up.

Okay, so I have now teared up twice in two episodes. Cally’s 95 year old grandma in episode 1 made me tear up………..and now, Liam Trainer everyone. What an incredible kid. And its more proof that hockey players and coaches do more than guys in any other sport with stuff like this. Its incredible to see.

QUOTE OF THE EPISODE: Mike Rupp “If I hit you late you won’t get up…..and you know it.”

Priceless!!!!!!!

Excuse my verbose exuberance, but I LOVE THIS SHOW.

I don’t see why Hartnell would be liked anymore after this.

Also, I’m a huge fan of the office and I don’t see the Jim-Girardi comparison!

I don't know....I think he looks like him.

If I say Girardi’s better looking, will that be weird? lol……

I guess what I’m saying is, regarding Hartnell, and all of them, is that it shows you their human side and in all reality, most hockey players seem like pretty good guys.

However, Brandon, after the last game …………. I HATE THEM ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I need that full quote about Bryzgalov on huskies

Because right now I think he has sex with dogs on a nightly basis.

Also, I have a huge respect for Torts for working with that kid with cerebral palsy. Turns out that kid is my former high school teacher’s nephew. The whole team is so mice to him also signing everything for him. I mean he must have every piece of rangers memorabilia ever. The Garden Of Dreams is a great organization. Dolan can’t manage a NBA or NHL for shit, but he can sure manage a charity.

I remember Leetch saying that when a whole team comes out flat there is usually reasons behind it. Too hard of a practice. Skating too hard at practice. That when you a

was saying that he said you can overdo it in a practice, long flight etc…

Makes me think that the skate right off the plane might have contributed to the team play that night in St. Louis. Not blaming Torts, no coach makes the right decision all the time but it really helps you understand some of the things behind the scenes that lend itself to the game. It is not a computer game were you just plug the team it and have them play.

+1 That practice seemed like a bad idea, just off the plane, and having played the night before.

I liked what I saw about the refs. You get a sense that they are almost into the games from a fan perspective at times. It’s not like they go into their breaks between periods and talk about something else, they’re talking about the game. I think skating with the action, and not just standing there like baseball umps makes them feel more a part of it.

As for La Violette, I second what KingHenrik 30 said – he just comes off great. I thought he said just the right things after they got blown out by Boston. Both coaches have come off well so far, just with La Violette, you don’t need ear plugs. Man, Torts can yell with the best of them!
