Marian Gaborik Is Making His Case For MVP Honors
In case you've been living under a rock since the Rangers shut out the Islanders Monday night, the New York Rangers are in first place in the Eastern Conference, shocking I know. Throughout the early season there have been many reasons for the Rangers success this year, Henrik Lundqvist being Henrik Lundqvist, a stalwart defense that has held strong even as bodies continue to fall around them, and the resurgence of Marian Gaborik being an elite goal scorer in the NHL.
We all know that Gaby had a bad year last year (22G 26A 48Pts in 62 games), whether it was due to playing injured, off ice problems that messed with his confidence or whatever it doesn't matter. Marian had an off year and the fanbase decided it was a good time to give up on him and move on somehow.
Well, I'm here to tell you that right now Marian Gaborik is the league's MVP 34 games into the season. He already leads the league in goals (tied with Steven Stamkos of the Lightning with 22) and his play this year has been nothing short of game changing, whether he scores in a game or not.
Now do I think Marian Gaborik will be named the MVP at the end of 82 games this year? No, but I do think he will be in the top 4 or 5 in voting, and right now he's the league's MVP.
Take the jump to see why I think Marian Gaborik has been better than players like Phil Kessel, Steven Stamkos, and other early league leaders thus far.
In July we all thought that Brad Richards would be the catalyst to bring Marian Gaborik back to where he should be and while early in the preseason and first few games of the season it seemed like the two elite players were building some chemistry they never really clicked and were split up and Gaby was eventually paired with Artem Anisimov and Derek Stepan.
Even during the doldrums of the early season we could see that Marian was skating at another level, and you could tell that things were going to be better for Gaby this year.
Now why is Gaby the MVP? Well, because, to me, Marian Gaborik has been the Most Valuable Player to his team this season and in all due respect and praise to Henrik Lundqvist I think that if Gaby would go down with an injury then the Rangers would be in a worse case then if Henrik went down since the team's defense could compensate for the loss of the goaltender. This team, as currently constructed, can not replace Marian Gaborik's production and skill as easily nor can they mask his absence in the line up with a call up from Connecticut.
That, I think is the true definition of MVP, the player is so valuable to his team that if he were to be hurt for an extended period of time then the team would truly suffer and in the first 34 games of this season I can't find any other player in the NHL that has had that big of an impact on his team than our own Marian Gaborik
So guys, do you agree, disagree, feel that I shouldn't write another written word because my thoughts are horribly stupid and narrow sighted? Discuss below

I think we should trade Gabs while his stock is high
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
using that logic, we should trade the whole team.

I don't completely disagree, but
With the Rangers leading the league in GAA I’m not so sure you could replace Hank as easily as you’ve alluded to. This team is barely in the top 10 in scoring but #1 overall in goals against and I think that is why they are winning. Without Hank this team is average at best.
Now the MVP typically goes to a skater and with that in mind I do agree that Gabby has to be among the top candidates thus far.
G GS M GAA W L OTL SO Mins GA SV%
30 Henrik Lundqvist 26 26 1570 1.95 15 7 4 3 795 51 .936
43 Martin Biron 10 9 549 2.08 7 2 0 1 247 19 .923
It really isn’t about Hank, it’s about how the D has played in front of them. Marty’s stats would probably be damn near as good as Hank’s if not for that shitty game last night in which the team played piss-poor in front of Biron.
Marty has been great
but his smallish sample size has to be considered. You can’t be suggesting that if Hank goes down we just plug in Biron and all will be fine. Our defense has played above THEIR heads, but if it were not for the goaltending we’d be in a world of trouble.
I’m not saying Biron’s as good as Hank. Biron’s played in about 40% of the games so far. What I’m saying is that their numbers being comparable is a product of the team playing good defensive hockey in front of both goaltenders. What that means to me is that our defense, especially a player like Girardi (if we’re sticking with the argument of team MVP ’til this point) has been our most important player because of how comparable those stats are.
Here’s the difference between Hank and Biron. Both are solid positional goaltenders who rely on taking away low shots and playing the percentages. Biron is a quality goalie that can win games with a decent to solid defense in front of him. Hank is a goalie that can outright steal a game if the defense isn’t playing well (which has been the case for most of his time here until last year with the emergence of Sauer and McDonagh).
Just a matter of me trying to state my case that I feel Girardi has been the team MVP and that our team defense has been a real key to our success. It’s not a goalie controversy :-) They’ve both been great.
were not in first anymore

Totally agree with the artickle!!!
Yes Gabby, could be MVP after this season,no doubt about that.last year was quite different, injuries and a lot of personal problems .Gabby was not into it..this year he wants to prove he can be again himself. Of all players on Ranger team ,he is the most talented player, most dangerous and the best shooter,,Except maybe Richard, and improving Stafan and Hagelin others are still distant.a level below no matter how Rangers play, every hockey ,good couch would tell you that!!!
I still think, all things considered, Girardi is the team MVP at this point. Dude’s playing close to half of every game against the other team’s best players. Gaborik becomes invisible for long stretches but still has that quick-strike ability. If Girardi disappeared like that, I think this team would be in it’s usual state of clinging to a 7 or 8 seed at this point, great goal-tending or not. He’s been influential in mentoring McDonagh, and has only taken what, 4 minor penalties?
This isn’t to belittle what Gaborik has done this season, but if he goes down, there’s still AA, Stepan, Richards, Cally, Dubinsky, and even Hagelin to pick up the scoring. If Girardi went down, considering we already have been without Staal for the season and Sauer for a long time, who replaces that?
Gaborik’s also 11 points behind the leader. If the voting were held today, I doubt he’d garner any votes from those that do that sort of thing. I mean he’s playing great, and doing what he should do in scoring some goals…but league MVP? I think that’s a bit too far.
I still put Hank in a distant first, but I’d agree, Girardi’s the most irreplaceable piece among the skaters right now.

So
guys, doyouagree , disagree, feel that I shouldn’t write another written word because my thoughts are horribly stupidand narrow sighted?
FTFY because I love you.
Gabby would definitely be my 2nd choice though, maybe 3rd depending on Henrik’s previous game :-) because he’s become dangerous again, but I think Gabby needs to do more in getting guys like Stepan and AA to score more. 11 assists in 34 games isn’t much.
i know someone had a fanpost about it a while ago, so i don’t meant to steal what you said. feel free to give yourself some recognition since i can’t remember who it was
breaking up marian and richards was one of the best things we could do. now we have 2 lines that are very dangerous offensively. it makes matchups much more difficult for other teams, especially when we are at home. torts does a good job getting the callahan/richards line up against top competition, which frees gaborik’s line up to do damage and not having to skate up-and-down the ice chasing the other team’s top players
maybe richards still is the catalyst giving marian more space out there.

Hmm, a month ago a number of you were shooting this down, and now it’s becoming clearer to you all.
Marian Gaborik is motivated like few are this season. Cases can and are made for Toews in Chicago, Kessel in Toronto, and now Versteeg in Florida. But looking closely at the structure of these teams, Gaborik is doing things defensively as well as scoring; Versteeg and Kessel, not as much, and Toews, just as much as Gaborik. Right now, I’d say it’s Gaborik, with Toews a very, very close second.

WTF does that have to do with Gabby being MVP...
or me declaring it six weeks ago?

IDK but defensively Toews is far better than Gabby, who admittedly has significantly improved in that area this year. Though its not fair really since Gabby is a wing, but with all else being equal (which its not, Toews is better defensively) Toews FO ability makes him a better defensive player.

I think that if Gaby would go down with an injury then the Rangers would be in a worse case then if Henrik went down since the team’s defense could compensate for the loss of the goaltender
If anything, I think the rash of injuries on defense has proved that it’s Hank who supports the defense, not the other way around. It’s an assortment of AHL players and waiver castaways plugging holes back there and the team hasn’t missed a beat. The ability of the offense to contribute has certainly been a help, since for the first time in a while he doesn’t have to win games 3-2 in a shootout to get us the W, but Hank is still they guy we’re going to live and die with.
No mention of Giroux?
NHL.com’s quarter-mark MVP, the league’s leading point scorer who also plays on the penalty kill and pushes the play forward at an elite level with middle-of-the-range zone starts?
Simon Gagne AND Mike Richards may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, they will both always be Philadelphia Flyers.

I mean obviously I’m biased but apart from Crosby and Malkin there’s no-one even near Giroux in points per game.
