Breaking News: Sean Avery Placed On Waivers (Again)

Photo

This afternoon, the New York Rangers have announced that forward Sean Avery has been placed on waivers once again. It seems as if Sean Avery will be on his way back to the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League if he goes unclaimed.

Sean Avery has been a healthy scratch for the last handful of games, and it seems as if his spot has been filled once again. Unfortunately, Sean Avery was brought back as a fill-in due to the injury of Mike Rupp earlier in the season. Now that Rupp has returned from his injury, Avery's role has basically diminished.

In his fifteen games with the Rangers this season, Sean Avery totaled up just three goals and zero assists. It will also be interesting to see what management's next move will be with Wojtek Wolski returning from injury within the next week or so.

We will continue to keep you guys updated on the status of Avery. Also be sure to check out Joe's noon number which was just released a short time ago.

I would rather keep him than Christensen but whatever, it is what it is

that is interesting, what happens to Wolski?

He replaces Mitchell most likely:

GAS line
Cally/B-Rich/Hagelin
Dubinsky/Boyle/Wolski
Feds/Rupp/Prust

If Wolski plays hard (I know, I know) that 3rd line could very well be quite dynamic because it has size, some decent speed, defensive wherewithal, and enough offensive talent to chip in some points.

by Caerid11 on Dec 30, 2011 12:46 PM EST up reply actions

I cant see that happening as the Boyle line get a LOT of defensive zone starts and that is not really a position you want to be in with WW on the ice.

Agreed, I think as well as Hagelin as played, Wolski makes more sense with Richards, and Hagelin w/ Boyle.

I don’t think he will replace Mitchell. Having Boyle, Mitchell, and Dubinsky on a line together has allowed them all to play a more physical game and if you watched the other night you would know that they were our only consistently good line. Dubinsky has really amped up his game since then. I would rather see Wolski stay out of the lineup or replace Fedotenko than Mitchell.

by NYR-BD-RC-HL-MS on Dec 30, 2011 2:31 PM EST up reply actions

I agree that Mitchell has played well enough to keep his spot, but I try to form a discussion based on what I think Torts would possibly do. You have to believe that Wolski will definitely be given a chance to crack the line-up. They’re not taking out Mike Rupp (it’s possible but I’d be really shocked if it was for any extended period that didn’t involve an injury), and that only leaves 2 other possibilities with the way the rest of the team has played.

1 is Feds. The other is Mitchell. Torts has a history with Feds and I think trusts him, even though Feds has regressed IMO this season and is on the 4th line. He also seems to trust veteran players much more than younger, inexperienced ones. If Mitchell is taken out, Wolski fills a spot in the middle 2 lines (on the 2nd with Rich/Cally makes the most sense as BiP and George pointed out). If Feds is taken out, Wolski isn’t seeing 4th line time. NONE of the other forwards is going to get 4th line ice-time except Mitchell. And I think Torts would stick with Feds playing on the 4th line than Mitchell.

I agree with you, but I don’t see Torts taking Feds out.

by Caerid11 on Dec 30, 2011 2:59 PM EST up reply actions

I would be shocked if Mitchell is scratched or demoted.

One mistake is sometimes enough for you to cost yourself a lineup spot with Tortorella, and Mitchell had that mistake against the Caps.

That said, he’s liked Mitchell’s play, as well as Rupp. Pretty sure he hasn’t changed his opinion on Feds either (even if he should), so it’s hard to figure out where (if anywhere) Wolski will get reinserted.

I don’t see a spot at all for Wolski right now. I could see Mitchell and Wolski splitting time, and if anyone needs a game off Torts won’t hesitate to give it. In Torts’ mind I think Mitchell>Wolski

I don’t see Torts doing it, but maybe a few mistakes can force him too. I like the team as is, I’d just bench Wolski until someone struggles.

have a soft spot for avery, i love his grit. i think his assets and ability are underrated, and i think they’re better with him (with the current roster). EC does nothing except be dangerous in shootouts.

EC isn’t playing either. We need cap space for Wolski and Avery frees up more of it.

As stated in the comments of another thread

In players who have played 6+ games, Sean Avery is 6th in the NHL in goals per 60 min on ice..
Statistics can be misleading, but if you are top 10 in that stat, and getting waived, clearly the coach does not want to use you. Oh well. Farewell, Sean Avery!

by Free2beljg on Dec 30, 2011 1:02 PM EST reply actions

Yes that is certainly a reasonable sample size to base a conclusion on.

by BigB22 on Dec 30, 2011 3:48 PM EST up reply actions

Its silly but on the other hand if he didn’t produce at all that would be brought up.

Bottom line when given they chance this year he did produce. I’m fine with someone getting the boot that doesn’t produce (ex. EC) but I think we can safely say at this point it wasn’t Avery’s lack of production that got him demoted. It cant be his relationship with the team since it is know he is good friends with a lot of the key/core players.

The only reasonable conclusion has to be that it is a problem between player and coach. And as much as I like Avery and am disappointed Torts could not mend the relationship, bottom line is nobody is bigger then the team. If the issues between coach and Avery were causing problem (maybe it is the fact that he is good friends with key players and have their ear) then for the sake of the team, he has to go.

I wish him well.

Bad move. It might not make a huge difference, but I don’t see in the slightest why you would keep Rupp and/or EC over Avery.

Maybe the cap hit, so I guess that could be the reasoning, but this is just the coach picking favorites.

Sending down Avery but putting Rupp on the PP? Awful.

Entirely the cap hit, and I don’t think the jury is still out on Rupp. He plays a different role than Avery, and I could see Rupp splitting time with someone and only coming in on physical games.

by BigB22 on Dec 30, 2011 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

The bottom line is that the coach has his favorites and those guys are gonna play. Before Rupp had one shift as a Ranger Torts had fallen in love with him so he is going to keep playing. When you see guys like Rupp and Boyle on the PP there is really nothing else to say. The only one who thinks they are bigger than the team is Torts.

by mattpergo on Dec 30, 2011 6:14 PM EST up reply actions

Oh god, get real! The coach does not give more playtime to his personal favorites, that is a ridiculous statement. He wouldn’t be where he is today or where he has been in the past if that were the case.

You sound like you’d have Torts fired before having Avery demoted, which is moronic.

EC/Avery are both pressbox fodder right now. One makes $1.875 to sit around, the other $925k. Either way, there’s no impact on the lineup, so it’s more cost effective to shed the guy making twice as much.

Christensen probably goes down at some point also, FWIW.

OK. Thanks! Was just kind of wondering there…

by dim3rd on Dec 31, 2011 7:50 AM EST up reply actions

Although

It’s not really cost effective when you’re replacing the $1.8 cap hit with a $3.8 cap hit.

The biggest opportunity I can see WW having to give this this team $3.8 mil worth of help is if Weber comes on the market and we can get Nashville to take him WW in the deal so we can get under the cap. As far as on the ice goes, Torts wasn’t going to use Avery, there’s no need for WW if the team keeps producing, but if the team hits a wall, I think Aves would be the bigger help to have coming out of the press box, and obviously would be much cheaper.

Whatever Torts Thinks of Avery . . .

. . . he’s very high on Rupp. Maybe we all need to give “Rupper” ten or fifteen games to show us he’s the big physical forward who can pick up some ugly goals? You know, the one that always hurt us as a Devil and a Penguin?

I love torts and have agreed with him on most occasions but his hate for Avery I can’t understand . Avery can contribute to the team but the coaches dislike for him is being placed above the team. That is a problem, you have to put personal feelings aside , you’re professionals , the only thing that matters is fielding the best team that gives you the best chance to win.. Aves has more value than EC and wolski and maybe even Mitchell . I’ll give Rupp a chance since it’s still too early to call him a bust. Dumb move is my opinion .

by Andy94 rangers are life on Dec 30, 2011 3:40 PM EST reply actions

The only value that Avery and EC have right now is cap space value, and Avery’s is bigger. A more than valid argument can be made that Avery being sent down is NOT based at all on the coach’s feelings.

Stepan/Anisimov/Gaborik
Wolski/Richards/Callahan
Hagelin/Dubib/Boyle
Feds/Rupp/Prust?

I’d prefer to see Wolski playing over Mitchell (well I’d prefer to see him over Rupp but I don’t think Rupp is sitting). As soon as Wolski comes back, Mithchell should be the extra forward and Christensen should follow Sean to Hartford. I wish we had room for Zuccarello.

by KingHenrik on Dec 30, 2011 3:54 PM EST reply actions

New here from Michigan joined after Hagelin was called up.

Never before a Ranger fan but watching the last month I have been impressed with the play of not only Hagelin, but Boyle and Mitchell as well.

Mitchell over the last month has been one of the top 9 forwards on this team some nights in the top 5 and he is not really young and inexperienced and some of the recent resurgence of Dubinsky must be credited to his new linemates

Never a fan of Avery’s I will say he is a better player than Christensen and Rupp, at least the Rupp I saw against the Caps
he seemed to lumber around the ice like he forgot his skates
maybe it’s just getting back or whatever but Rupp certainly didn’t look ready to play and if he wasn’t ready why was he activated
just saying I hope that is not as good as it gets.

by MasterOfPuppets on Dec 30, 2011 3:58 PM EST reply actions

Rupp Is Probably . . .

. . . not as good a skater as Hagelin.

by cmont on Dec 30, 2011 4:05 PM EST up reply actions

not many are

sure wasn’t comparing those two but he isn’t as good a skater as Avery either.
one thing I have noticed is that the Ranger’s have excellent speed even in their physical guys Boyle, Prust, Dubinsky, Mitchell and Christensen though only Boyle is as large as Rupp.
Rupp is a dinosaur in the game today, sure it’s fun to watch them eat their prey, but they will eventually bite you in the ass.

Saw this one coming a mile away.

Avery’s cap number is a bone of contention for the Rangers. He and Christensen were looking doomed as ever when Wolski started skating harder in practice (moreso when Rupp was activated).

The Rangers are looking to do something; I can absolutely see what is coming. A deal is coming following the New Year and the Winter Classic. Sather’s juggling a few balls in the air, with the hope the rest of the team will continue to flourish. But if any of them drop, this WILL get ugly.

Depth is a good thing, generally. But, there is such a thing as “too much of a good thing” sometimes.

Sean Avery, placed on waivers by the Rangers at noon Friday, told The Post this afternoon that he "guarantee[s]" that a club claiming him "won’t ever be sorry."

"I have a lot to prove, and I have a lot of game left after not being allowed to play my game for the last four years," Avery told The Post before returning to New York from Florida, where he was given notice of the move this morning.

"I guarantee that I’ll play my a— off and give everything I have for the team that will give me the chance I wasn’t getting [by coach John Tortorella]. That team will be getting a guy who has a lot to prove.

"The GM and coach willing to look past some of the things that are out there about me, I can guarantee that they won’t ever be sorry, and neither would my teammates.

"I’m hungry to prove people wrong."
