Michael Sauer Diagnosed With Concussion Following Hit By Dion Phaneuf

The New York Rangers announced today that defenseman Michael Sauer has been diagnosed with a concussion. During the second period against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Dion Phaneuf delivered a hard, but clean hit to Sauer. He appeared injured on the play, was slow to his feet, and did not return to the game.

It is almost certain that Sauer will not play tomorrow against the Tampa Bay Lightning, but he is listed as day-to-day. Anton Stralman will most likely be inserted into the line-up tomorrow night, which makes the Rangers bottom four on defense very vulnerable. Stralman will be paired with Jeff Woywitka on the third pairing, and Steve Eminger will move up to play with Michael Del Zotto.

Losing Sauer is a serious blow the Rangers line-up, as they are already missing their top defenseman, Marc Staal. Sauer has been a vital part of the "core" that the Rangers rely on. While it's a serious blow, if the Rangers stick to their game, they can still win hockey games.

Also be sure to check out Joe's interview with Mike Keenan, as he discusses his opportunity to coach the 2012 NHL Alumni Game.

So much for me hoping that he hit his shoulders and back on the boards/glass. Well this certainly sucks ass.

Well

This is why the Rangers got Stralman. Although I have a feeling that if Tim Erixon gets healthy quick (and he was on his way) then he might get a call-up

I was anticipating this announcement the whole day. Truly sucks. After Lundqvist, Girardi and McDonough, Sauer is the toughest to lose.

But on the bright side, we never thought the Rangers would be doing so well without Staal, so let’s not overreact yet. Hopefully, its a minor concussion and Sauer is only out a week or so.

In the recent tradition of Rangers headlines, or lack thereof, no news is not good news. When there wasn’t any word on Sauer even through lunch-time today it seemed like it had to be a concussion. Hope it’s not too severe, he’s been underrated in the defensive end, channeling his inner Beukeboom.

Why do we keep saying clean hit?

A chin to the head is not a clean hit anymore, end of discussion.
It was a monstrous hit with a ton of power, but you simply can’t have the head as the principle point of contact. I’ve been saying, and Moshe can confirm, from the second I watched the hit that Sauer was concussed. His bare head nailed the glass, and then the top of the boards underneath. Two hits to the back of the head, and Phaneuf’s shoulder in your chin… That’s definitely a concussion.
People are pussyfooting around the whole head contact issue, so I doubt this hit gets a second look because people are afraid of taking big hits out of the game. It’s a shame really, because now is the time to start eliminating any hit that makes the head the main point of contact.
I believe MDZ has been excelling, if you’re comfortable describing his play with that word, because he has had such a reliable stay at home and consistent defenseman in Michael Sauer. This injury is real trouble for this team, we’ll need Girardi and McDonoaugh to be playing even more minutes against better competition.

by Free2beljg on Dec 7, 2011 2:25 PM EST reply actions   2 recs

first off, there has to be intent to make first contact with the head. a player could be going for a normal hit and players can turn in under a second. Wolski made first contact with Alfredson’s head but there was no intent. He just turned into it. So there has to be a line between intent and accidental. otherwise there will always be problems with taller players checking shorter ones, or when players are hunched over, such as Staal was.

the after effects of a hit are not relevant to the initial hit. We agree the concussion came on the bare head hit to the boards and ice, again much like Staal. but that’s not Phaneuf’s fault. a legal hit can end up making player fall akwardly.

I dont want the physicality to come out of the game. I only care about INTENT to make first contact with the head. that is intent to injure and has no place.

Phaneuf at the worst, came up a little when he hit but he did not seem to leave his feet. and he showed no intent to aim for the head. I say it was clean.

Agreed AND...

Forgetting about the actual hit for a moment, if you watch the play in its entirety, it is very clear that DP had absolutely no intention of playing the puck whatsoever…ZERO. In fact he is looking right at Sauer for 2+ seconds with one thing and one thing only on his mind. Laying him out.

That in itself is an issue, whether or not you think the actual hit is clean or not.

The rule book flat-out states that: A minor or major penalty shall be imposed on a player who skates or jumps into,(which he did), or charges an opponent in any manner.

Charging shall mean the actions of a player who, as a result of distance traveled, shall violently check an opponent in any manner. A "charge" may be the result of a check into the boards, into the goal frame or in open ice.

And even over and above all of this, Shanny still has already suspended guys if no call was made during the game. TBH, I was very surprised and disappointed that DP was not suspended for this given the entire circumstance.

i cant even begin to describe how much i disagree with this statement…
i respect your opinion sir, but where im from, a defensman is taught to play the body, not the puck. you play the puck and you get schooled usually. hes taught to take the man out of the play and he did that very well.

'Neuf did EXACTLY what I've been saying our guys should do

Throw a clean, solid hit when you have the chance. Kill one, frighten 10,000. It’s a shame what happened to Sauer, but from the Maple Leafs standpoint, every guy in the league saw that, and I’m sure some forwards are going to be paying extra attention to where HE is when they’re going for the puck on offense, or think about making a one-on-one play, if they weren’t already.

by BuckarooClub on Dec 8, 2011 11:07 AM EST up reply actions

He’s been making hits like that for years. He’s renowned as a heavy hitter—if people do not know where he is on the ice and try to cruise into the Leafs’ zone, someone’s getting highlight reeled if he’s on the ice :P

I am a little bit pissed that Dubi has gone from beloved leading scorer to Rangers pariah in less than a year. I get that he is having a bad year, but playing fourth-line mins with less offensively talented players does not help him get back to where he was. I know he should earn minutes but the guys is a key player that needs to get going.

I’d like to see him take Boyle’s place. Boyle is not having a good year either and his hands are not great. Dubi would benefit more from the mins and I think Hagelin and Mitchell would benfit from Dubi’s presence and he can carry and shield the the puck well.

why not split up Girardi and Mcd? I know they have been great together but it would give us a more balanced D if we split those two up and put MdZ with Girardi and McD with woywitka or stralman. I know that would mean MDZ might be playing first line minutes but it actually might be good for him and he might step up to the challenge.

And 25 for a 2nd pair is better than 30 for two marginally less effective pairs.

MDZ and Girardi has never worked well. I suspect it’s because Girardi isn’t a fantastic skater himself, so putting MDZ with him, who isn’t strong either, just asks for trouble.

Like Joe said this is why we have Stralman.

There are plenty of stopgaps for us to turn to here, but there is no question that having Mike Sauer out of the lineup is going to suck. Hopefully we get a healthy Staal in the lineup sooner rather than later but until then we are going to have to depend on guys like MDZ and Eminger to play more minutes. And we are going to need Dan Girardi and Ryan McDonagh to perform at an even higher level.

Supposedly the M11 never stuck because they look “uglier” than the current helmets. A couple of teams are mandating their use at the ECHL/AHL levels, but I don’t know if any teams are using them on a mandatory basis at the NHL level. I don’t know what could bbe done but instead of deciding what team goes where how about more thoughts on protection

Contact at high speeds = concussions. I’m not sure you can protect against it, especially when a good number of the concussions are because of the event following the hit (head hitting ice/dasher, etc.). I thought I remember reading something that the helmet Messier invested in does little to prevent concussions (but I can’t remember exactly where).

This simplest idea is enlarging the ice surface to cut down on the hitting. However, the owners will never let that happen. It’s an important conversation, but I think it will be years before the NHL engages it in a serious manner. Just look at the stonewall they are throwing up in regards to fighting and concussions.

by NTB on Dec 7, 2011 5:42 PM EST up reply actions

the cascade m11 helmet is very good at preventing second impact concussions compared to other hockey helmets. there are better once for 1st impact, but the m11 has the fastest recovery of all helmets. so its quite good.
but you are completely right: with that tempo in the nhl it’s not possible to prevent concussions…
reduced shoulder and elbow pads could help a bit

by marionyr on Dec 7, 2011 6:21 PM EST up reply actions

i was saing something similar recently. the game is just faster and players are bigger. so making the ice a little bigger is a very simple and logical solution. idk it would work but its a theory.

It would definitely work, the problem is the owners do not want to lose the revenue of taking (what I think is) 4-6 rows of expensive seats all around.

had several concussions in my life (some from playing hockey, but not professional) and i think that it depends what grade of concussion you have and how easily your brain can return to its normal constitution. sometimes light concussions come with whiplash symtoms as well. i f.e. had a contusion of a neck muscle a month ago or so (first thought was a concussion) and coz of the swelling of the muscle i got some vertigo as well which lasted for three weeks but resumed playing after two. head injuries are very hard to diagnose correctly, i think… so maybe sauer is back in a week or two…. just hope and pray…

nah. vinny is overrated and zuccs and erixon are two great prospects. gilroy is just as much a fringe guy as wolski. boyle is a dependable player. id say its fair. in fact i wouldnt do that trade as a ranger fan IMO

"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

Do you want a guy who has one of the largest cap hits in the league?

And who in the last 3 seasons hasn’t put up 30 goals? We don’t need him.

I cringed when I thought about it but if Stralman’s a bust does McCabe get a call?
