Artem Anisimov's Mistake And John Tortorella's Smart Move
Sometimes hockey can be a game of emotions.
We saw that last night when Artem Anisimov's celebration after a beautiful shorthanded goal turned into a brawl between the two sides. Eventually the Tampa Bay Lightning would tie the game and win in a shootout, but after everything was said and done all anyone could talk about was Anisimov's "mistake."
Honestly, I don't think it was that big of a deal.
Was it intentionally meant to insult the Lightning? No. Is Anisimov a classless player because of it? No. Was it smart? Absolutely not. Did it breath life back into Tampa Bay? Maybe.
Anisimov got overexcited after scoring one of the prettiest goals of the season, and the Lightning were upset because they had just given up a shorthanded goal and were upset with the celebration. After the game Steven Stamkos said Anisimov shot at Vincent Lecavalier. Lecavalier told the media Anisimov shot at the net.
That's just emotions on both sides. Emotions are what sports is about.
Join me after the jump for more.
I also think it's important to note the way John Tortorella handled the situation.
There are many Tortorella haters out there, and while I'm certianly not one of them, I think we all can agree that Tortorella did the right thing once the game was over. Anisimov apologized to his teammates right after the game way over, and there was absolutely no need to subject a player who was already upset to the media right after the game.
Tortorella told the media he was in "protection mode" last night, and I think that should be applauded. Anisimov is not a dirty player and there was no need to have him talking to the media while he was emotional. He will be available to the media today, according to Tortorella's press conference, and hopefully everyone can move on.
Just one other thought on the incident.
The Lightning had no issues calling Anisimov classless; but Stamkos seemed to have no problem punching Anisimov with a glove on, and I guess Tampa Bay didn't see Steve Downie jump over the boards to enter the ensuing scrum illegally either. Just a thought.
Stamkos also said after the game that "I think I've seen him do that once or twice before, so no surprise there."
I might be wrong here, but I don't think I've ever seen Anisimov celebrate a goal like that before. I think Stamkos was just a little wound up.
Thoughts guys?

Saw the highlight on line
And I think Torts did the right thing, not putting Artie in front of the scrum. The kid was probably emotional, confused and also wouldn’t know how to really express himself correctly due to his limited control of the English language. Overall it was stupidity on all Anisimov’s point and I guarantee he doesn’t do it again

I think it’s funny how Ovechkin and his Caps cronies celebrate every goal like it’s a Cup winner, and nobody says crap about it. Way overblown. My only real problem with the whole thing was that it could have been interpreted that he was pointing “the rifle” at the goaltender.
Lightning got revenge in the best way possible, they won the game.
If Dubinsky and Boyle ever score a goal again they are liable to do the “Ickey Shuffle”

I see a difference between celebrating a goal a little too much, and doing something that specifically is aimed (no pun intended) at the other team. That gun thing aiming – whether it was aimed toward the goal itself, or the goalie, was a little too much for me.
I didn’t like it, but my first response wasnt that it was so insulting, but more “why would he make like a gun shooter when all he did was tap a puck into an empty net?”

If that was a penalty, Overchin (and the rest of the Caps) should be in the box after just about every goal they score.
Seriously? He was shooting at us? Please! I only disagree with Torts on the question of the correctness of Tampa’s response. Grow up boys!
I also wasn’t aware that excessive celebration was against the rules. I mean he didn’t go to the ground which would would have been an automatic 15 yards. Did he get it for a “group” celebration in the end zone. Maybe he went and danced on the Cowboys’ Star?
Was the celebration over the top? Sure. Was it any different than anything else that goes on? No. Will Ovechin get a penalty the next time he celebrates. Hell No!

No one is saying its not a fine line between “excessive celebration” and “insulting the opposition”. I have no idea how to draw that line. Its a little of the porn issue – you know it when you see it. That said, it sounds like youre more interested in taking shots at Ovechkin and absolving Anisimov. Just because one guy might get away with things we don’t like isnt a reason to be happy when someone else does it.

That is the crux of the issue. I for one think he was pointing the rifle at the net, not the goaltender in the net. Perhaps that is because of my affinity for Arty but I just don’t see him being that aggressive/cocky/idiotic/show-boaty. Is show-boaty a word?

I think he was just over excited. Let them brawl it out and shit. Instead we ended up on the ass end of a powerplay situation. stamkos is whining because he’s playing like crap against us and if I was a ranger I would of yanked him away from the pile and beat his ass down fair and square after pulling that cheap shot. Anisimov didn’t lift a finger to fight so he must of known immediately what he did. Basically he got excited, said “oh shit whoops!” And then bam jumped by there team. I understand if I was a lightning player I would jump in but the NHL giving anisimov anything other then an unsportsmanlike is BS. There blowing what he did way out of proportion. Stupid NHL. i posted this in the game thread already ,, but figured it fit here too,,,
i don’t think tampa would have have reacted the same way if the "stick/gun" was aimed at the boards or glass or something. but since it was directed in the direction of the opposing players/goal, it was taken personally, and also in my opinion brought the celebration a bit over the top.
but at the same time, like someone else posted, why are we subject to watching ovechkin put his stick down on the ice and warm his hands like "it’s too hot to hold" that could be taken personally too as if he’s saying, i’m so good, i can score, and you can’t. yet players like him don’t get unsportsmanlike penalties.
i’m in agreement with most on this site, there’s goal celebrations, and there’s over the top goal celebrations. i don’t mind a knee slide, fist pump, a jump into the glass. but the gun aiming/swordslinging/over the top ovie celebrations are the ones that annoy me, and cheapen hockey for me.

Anisimov definitely deserved his 2 minute unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, but...
How does he deserve a double minor for roughing? For getting hit in the face with Stamkos’ glove? For getting punched by Downie?
And how do Downie and Stamkos not get greater penalties for leaving the bench and punching with a glove on, respectively?
For throwing off his gloves, automatic roughing penalty

Stamkos full on, gloved shot at AA's jaw might be an even bigger violation of the "code" then AA's celebration
Tha’ts a pretty shady move. Who did Stamkos think he was kidding? The last (and only?) guy Stamkos ever fought was Nik Zherdev. If Stamkos knew then what Z could do to Bentley, he probably wouldn’t have even tried anything then. If Stamkos wanted to take up his concerns with AA, he could have. Russian cultural thing
Have seen many Russians go over the top with Celebrations before including AO. It is a bit of a cultural thing I think. I also dont think these celebrations are really directed ar making fun of the other team just having a little fun While it’s not Rigth, it’s not a big thing. I think celebrations are fine but that was a little excessive and could have easily been misinterpreted. I get the whole “sniper” thing but that was a tap-in. Two minute penalty for unsportsmanlike was well-deserved as was the response from Tampa Bay.
There are, however, some things that are funny…even ironic…that:
a) We have to apologize for it. I rarely, if ever, see another team apologize when one of their guys seriously injures a guy with a hit from behind or head shot. Wouldn’t it make more sense to apologize then?
b) Tortorella and Richards have to apologize for a grown man. Artie might not have a good grasp of the language but he should be able to say sorry (not that I think he has too)
c) there still is a lingering Tortorella/Richards Lighting boner. If this was any other team, would it have been that big a deal?
d) Gilroy is still playing!

Seriously
Would Stammer and Vinny like some cheese with that whine? Apparently you’re not allowed to celebrate after you score a goal or have fun anymore.
AA was out of line but he is not that type of player
Maybe with the HBO camers around all day around the team made AA hyped up? Anyway, it was a miskate from a player that has a clean rep and he will not repeat that action again. Futhermore, that fag bettman and the NHL better suspend that dirtbag Downie for 10 games for coming off the bench. That dude has a rep and he indeed break the rule for leaving the bench during a brawl. See last year game between the Islanders and Pen’s when Godard left the bench to help out his goaltender against Haley, he got 10 games…and why was Downie still allowed to play? Don’t the refs have the opportunity to look over between periods or receive a call down from Toronto?
I'm not sure if the rule still exists or not but
Didn’t it used to state if a player leaves the bench to join an altercation both the PLAYER and HEAD COACH is gone for 10 games.
Player for 10, Coach for 1.
They ruled however though that Downie was in the process of a line change and therefore did not jump off the bench.
BS, I know.

Raw Charge consensus is pretty much
AA was a bit impulsive and did something dumb. Downie was a bit impulsive and did something dumb (people say Downie is dirty. Downie was dirty in AHL. He is no longer. But he’s still fiery and impulsive and prone to this kind of stuff). Vinny did what a captain is supposed to do. All of those things happen in hockey.
I really like the way Torts handled it. Although I’m not totally convinced it was the spark for the Bolts. Tampa had outplayed the Rangers pretty badly for most of the second period prior to that, so there really wasn’t any spark needed. Although one could argue that it helped the team focus after giving one up. Trust me when I say that’s been a big problem of late.
Not sure what Stammer was looking at. Probably got crossed up in the heat of the moment and needs to go back and actually look at what happened (and what often happens).
If I cared more about my UNC side, I'd call myself "Tar Volon," and that'd be awesome.

I’m pretty sure AA has done that celebration before. I can remember his dropping to a knee along the boards and “shooting” toward center ice as he slid across the ice. For some reason I can’t remember which game, but I think it was last season. Either way, I think he probably shouldnt have done it right back at the goal, but I dont have much of an issue with it. I think he was just having some fun and was excited about scoring. Hopefully all will be forgotten soon and we can talk about relevant things.

Stammer is recalling the Bow and Arrow motion Arty did last year after he scored one, the difference was he was pointing down the ice at the end boards. In any case I dont have a problem with the celebration as long as he turns it around and doesn’t point it at their net. Even though I still thought it was awesome that it stirred the pot, I love seeing things boil over in a hockey game and that was definitely enjoyable. Too bad we lost at the end….

Taking Liberties with no Repercussions
Just a thought….. It seems that since Rupp and Deveaux have been gone I am seeing other teams taking liberties- ie running our players and specifically our defensemen a lot more. Hits, both clean and dirt on Sauer, Del Zotto, the slew foot on Prust last night, Stamkos’ pussy-shot on AA.
I realize some on this site were willing to burn Deveaux at the stake for his elbow but bottom line we need someone to protect our players. Prust just isnt big and strong enough to do it by himself.

I can't decide
When I play a sport and score a goal, I’m always excited. It’s fun and should be celebrated. At the same time, if you allow some celebrations, it opens a can of worms that the league/sport want to stay away from. It becomes a judgement call then of what is too far and what is acceptable.
Some of the football celebrations are funny and clever, some are stupid and taunting rather than celebrating like the Bills’ Steve Johnson mocking the Jets. In soccer there are some ‘standard’ ones and some unique ones. I love to see the reactions and enthusiasm.
It’s one of those old-time rules of hockey however, ingrained in players since their early days, seemingly, so I don’t foresee much changing. Beyond the fist pump and ensuing hugs and glove-bumps at the bench, it’ll be frowned upon. It’s good in some ways, that’s plenty of celebration, but I’m all for a little hint of personality and joy.
Bottom Line
I’m a huge fan of Ryan McDonagh but both goals last night were a direct result of his shaky play. The first was the unmitigated mistake of trying to clear the zone up the middle when all he needed to do was use the boards. The second was having his stick on the wrong side of his body while defending against Moore charging down the right side. Had he had his stick in the proper position, he could have stick checked the puck off Moore’s stick long before Moore got his shot off. I don’t know what he was thinking. Moore was commited to his backhand the whole time. So, but for two bad mistakes, the Anisimov situation would have been an amusing sidenote to a Rangers win.

While McD certainly gave the puck away and it was his fault he got now help from Dubinsky. Dubinsky was standing still outside of our blueline. When you dont move your feet or come back to help the defense then you must share in the blame. I dont know whats with Dubinsky but he seems like he has checked out. Its one thing to not score but it is another thing entirely to stop playing with energy, hustle and enthusiasm. Unfortunately Dubi is lacking all three right now plus not scoring. Can he be sent to Hartford to regain some confidence a la Cally a few years ago? He needs a wake up call.

Besides, Dubinsky has played far too much NHL hockey for an AHL stint to really do any good.
by Zuppa Di Pesce on Dec 9, 2011 6:47 PM EST up reply actions
No way you can put that on Dubi
There really is no scenerio where it’s ever OK for a defenseman to send a backhander through the middle of the ice like that. If McD had pushed it up the boards to Girardi, Girardi could have made the pass to Dubi, and created an opportunity the other way. The idea that everyone on offense needs to collapse back with great haste so the defensemen can collapse and never have to handle the puck is something we need to get away from.
As far as Dubi goes, I think it’s a bit of a mess on the part of Torts. Torts is the one who insisted Dubi was not a center, but a winger. The things the guy does well are winning faceoffs, going into the corners, and being able to hold the puck long enough to get a nice pass off. He’s not really top 6 talent, on talent alone, but I think he be a good complent to true top 6 talent, offering some protection and knowing how to help and stay out of the way. He takes alot of flack for “not doing anything” but he’s got 11 assists, not bad for a guy who’s not playing with either of our $6+ mil forwards.
I’m not saying we have to make Dubi untouchable if the right offer comes our way (I think anyone but Hank with out a NTC should be available if it helps the team) but I think that everything will work itself by the end of the season. I’m confident BR’s line is going to produce consistently, but as I’ve said before, I’m not so sure about Gabby. If Gabby’s line stops producing, giving Dubi some time with guys like Step and AA could help fill some of the scoring drought. In the meantime, he’s certainly not hurting the team.
I’m not putting the entirety of it on Dubi. McD screwed up- no doubt about that. However- the forwards have to move and make themselves available to be passed to. My point is that Dubi was simply standing there, not moving-he was watching.
I have nothing against Dubi but he is playing some very bad hockey right now. Combine his lack of effort with $4m/year and it is a major problem.
"Shoot the Puck Barry, Shoot the puck !" Bill Chadwick
by RangerFanInChicago on Dec 9, 2011 5:28 PM EST up reply actions
Watch the tape again. If McD moved it up to Girardi, Dubi was in the right spot to get the pass from Girardi. Drop Dubi back to further, and McD still should make that pass to Girardi, but Girardi has no one to pass to when he gets it.
by BuckarooClub on Dec 10, 2011 11:05 AM EST up reply actions
If Dubi is not a Winger then why did he have his best season on the left side the whole year last year? I know he took a lot of face-offs and then switched off to the wing after that so its a moot point. This has nothing to do with Dubi not playing center(although thats where he is now) Dubi has lost all confidence and he needs to regain it somehow, last night not a bad game for him by any means. He recorded a beautiful assist and he should be confident about it. I say plug him back with Richie and Cally in a few games and see if it comes together.
by CrazyRangerFan on Dec 9, 2011 5:29 PM EST up reply actions
If Dubi is not a Winger then why did he have his best season on the left side the whole year last year?
Because we pretty much squeezed every ounce of offense we could out of the guy, and he led the league in empty net goals. Torts was convinced that Dubi was going to be a scorer, and I really don’t think that’s the case. I don’t think it’s so much he lacks confidence, it’s just that he’s been trying to be something he’s not. Let him help the other guys score, and on occasion, bang home a couple of his own.
I don’t think putting him back with BR will necessarily help him, since I think both Dubi and BR do the same thing when they’re playing their best hockey – help their linemates produce. Dubi is back at center now, he’s not a liability defensively, and he’s on pace to have a career year for assists. Not bad from your current 7th forward. Also, as I said above if Gabby production drops, you’ve got a guy you can give more minutes to who should be able to help.
by BuckarooClub on Dec 10, 2011 11:20 AM EST up reply actions
I disagree, Dubinsky has more scoring talent than Callahan in my opinion. I think Dubi has just lost confidence, and its going to take a bit of time to gain it back. I refuse to think all of his goals and beauty set ups last year were a fluke. Dubi will be back to normal soon enough…I hope.
by CrazyRangerFan on Dec 10, 2011 1:03 PM EST up reply actions
Let’s completely ignore the Dubi was a crucial part of the Anisimov goal before the madness ensued. He’s putting up assists. Might not be goals, but every assist means someone on the ice with him got a goal.
He also also been good on the PK as usual, playing a big part in why we were able to kill that one 5 on 3 that Tampa had.

The coach should also be suspended 1 game, but since when does the NHL follow their own rules?

it's been ruled that Downie didn't leave the bench for the fight
he left for a line change and then jumped into the fight.
Still might get a hearing and a fine or suspension, but it’s not an auto-10.

It is so hazy because he was sitting on the boards and was going to come over the boards but Connolly was still shaken up and was taking some time to get onto the bench. I personally feel like he is getting pretty damn lucky if it was judged he didn’t jump off the bench to join the fracas. In my opinion he did.
I am not surprised by the ruling though.

yeah, he got lucky
and I would not be shocked at all to see a suspension. But 10 games seems a bit steep, which is probably why they erred on the side of “oh cool line change.”
Downie needs to learn to control his emotions a lot better out there. He’s been doing a lot to distance himself from a dirty rep (which hasn’t worked, sadly), but he’ll still jump into fights whenever almost given an opportunity

He’s a feisty player. If a Ranger did what Downie did I would at first be stoked about him defending the pride of the team and all that jazz but afterwards (about 4 seconds afterwards) I would be thinking about what a bonehead move that was and how stupid the player was for doing it.

All of the people saying this is overblown: What if Anisimov skated across to the Lightning goalie and did the same thing in front of him? What if Anisimov skated in front of the Lightning bench and did the same thing down the line of players? What if Dominic Moore had done the same things after his tying SH goal? Would that be ok?

You can say “What if” all you want, but that’s not what happened, so it’s irrelevant. Him aiming and shooting at the net is completely different from “skating across to the Lightning goalie and doing the same thing in front of him” or “down the line of players”.
He was excited. He mimicked a celebration he had seen a player do his whole career in the KHL (A former member of Lokomotiv, actually). He even stated he always wanted to use that celebration. Obviously it wasn’t meant to be taken as offensively as it was. He apologized, it won’t happen again. Everyone can move along.

Celebrations such as Anisimov’s in last night’s 3-2 shootout loss to the Lightning are more common in Europe and Russia. Anisimov said he was actually emulating a defenseman from his hometown club in Yaroslavl. That would be former Lokomotiv defenseman Ilya Gorokhov, ironically drafted in the eight round by the Rangers in 1995 who is playing this season in the KHL for Moscow Dynamo.
"I grow up in Yaroslavl, one guy, he score goals, he’s a defenseman, and every goal he celebrates like this," Anisimov said. "I watch him and I like it and I tell myself when I’m going to play in the NHL and I score a goal I do the same thing."

You think this will actually happen?
70.10 Fines and Suspensions – The first player to leave the players’ or penalty bench during an altercation or for the purpose of starting an altercation from either or both teams shall be suspended automatically without pay for the next ten (10) regular League and/or Play-off games of his team.
apparently i'm in the minority with my thoughts on it
anisimov is not classless but the celebration pointing the stick/gun at garon/the net was a classless act
i don’t want to hear he’s 23, excited, etc…..you don’t go crazy over a goal scored unless it’s something meaningful or of major significance (i.e. fleury’s skate/slide tumble celebration to force game 7 vs. edmonton, selanne’s gun/shoot of his glove after breaking bossy’s rookie goal record)
saying “but ovechkin does it” doesn’t excuse that kind of thing, you’re excusing a stupid move by pointing out another stupid move
the great goal/move should be the highlight, not the stupid celebration afterward
i know for a fact that if stamkos had scored the go-ahead goal last night to put tampa up 2-1 and done that same move pointing at hank this board would have had a nuclear meltdown with posters wanting stamkos killed by rupp
to me the anisimov thing is more symbolic of a shift in the way fans accept behaviors now more than anything
it really surprises me honestly

While I cited many of the “excuses” that will make you roll your eyes I agree that what Arty did was a stupid, stupid thing to do. Some people are saying he was “acting up” because of the 24/7 cameras and all that shit but that is no excuse.
Because what Arty did was so stupid I understand the reactions of Lecavalier, Stamkos, and the guys on the ice but I think Downie stepped over the line. All of that though is secondary to the point that what Anisimov did was dumb.

I shared the following thoughts with the good folks over at Raw Charge in their GT last night
Hi guys.
About Artem Anisimov’s celebration:
I for one think it was more than a little bit inappropriate. I also think that the retaliation to it was more than a little bit inappropriate. Anisimov is a young, enthusiastic player who is not known for anything like this. I have seen him celebrate a goal before by doing the "archer" pose (pretending to notch an arrow and fire it, while the stick is the bow) but never anything like what we saw today. I don’t take too much issue with Vinny going over to start the scrum because he is a proud player and I would probably do the same thing if I were in his skates. The scrum in and of itself is fine, I take issue with Downie joining it and making things uglier than they had to be.
I thought Downie coming off of the bench was a very dumb, dangerous thing to do. Though I think it is hazy as to whether or not you could consider Connolly still on the ice. That being said Downie was sitting on the boards near the bench and had no business skating over to the scrum. It was inappropriate.
I think Anisimov should get a fine and I think Downie should get the same. I don’t know Downie’s track record with suspensions and things of that nature so I don’t know if it is appropriate for him to get games off. It was a stupid, unfortunate thing to happen. I am sure Anisimov’s goal came from the joy of scoring a short-handed goal off of a very pretty play… that being said the celebration was more than a little bit over the top. I didn’t find it as offensive as Ovechkin’s "my stick is too hot" celebration but I can see how it looked like Anisimov was shooting at the goaltender with his "gun" and not the net. I am sure it will be something he won’t be doing again anytime soon.
He really should have just done a Selanne and thrown one of his gloves into the air to shoot out of the sky. Would have saved everyone a headache.
They agreed with me almost across the board and thought what Downie did was worthy of suspension.
Those are my two cents on it. I think the Lightning players on the ice (and one guy who was on the bench) overreacted and deserved to walk away from the scrum shorthanded (which is not what happened). I think Torts is handling it well, and I think Arty is handling it well.

yeah, still agree with all of that
and I never did figure out how the Lightning got a power play out of it. Didn’t we have three guys sent off and y’all only have two? Was it because of the lengths of the penalties?
Not that it mattered anyways. Both teams were in a fog for the next 2-3 minutes after the scrum, and there were no goal threats.

Dubinsky and Anisimov got.
Dubinsky got 4 minutes for roughing (two minors)
Anisimov got 16 minutes. 2 for unsportsmanlike, 10 minute game misconduct, 4 minutes for roughing (two minors)
Bolts got
M.A. Bergeron- 4 minutes for roughing (two minors)
Stamkos- 2 for roughing
Downie- 2 for roughing, 10 minute game misconduct
The reason the Bolts got the powerplay was the unsportsmanlike conduct assessed to Anisimov. Interesting that Vinny Lecavalier didn’t get a roughing.

I think I missed Anisimov’s third one

Remember the “Pumper-Nichol” and 3 goal scorer Tie Domi riding his stick? The shooting thing has been around FOREVER. It still goes on in rec leagues & beer leagues. Who cares. Tortarella handled the situation perfectly. It is a coaches job to protect his players. The F-ing media wants to make all athletes appear in a bad light because they only know how to write in the negative. Old time sports reporters tried to highlight the positive, but unfortunately they are not talented enough to write real stories about the game as Vin Scully used to talk about Red Barber. “He would paint a picture with words” the clowns now couldn’t even finger paint.
