Michael Sauer Injury: Defenseman Not Traveling To Buffalo, Implications For The Future
You can file this into the "not surprising at all, but it's still a really bad thing" file.
Michael Sauer, who was concussed after a hit from Dion Phaneuf in the New York Rangers's loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs, will not make the trip to Buffalo for the Rangers upcoming game against the Sabres according to Andrew Gross.
The Rangers, who are already down Marc Staal to a concussion, replaced Sauer with Anton Stralman in Thursday night's 3-2 shootout loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. And while Stralman didn't have a bad game, the Rangers aren't in a position where they can lose Sauer for an extended period of time.
It also doesn't help that John Tortorella needed to shelter the third defensive pairing (just 10 minutes for Stralman and nearly nine minutes for Jeff Woywitka) which forced Dan Girardi and Ryan McDonagh to play 32 and 27 minutes respectively. Michael Del Zotto also got hit hard, playing over 26 minutes himself.
Join me after the jump for more.
Both Girardi and McDonagh are already playing at a breakneck pace, and that's not going to stop anytime soon (or at least for the duration of Sauer's injury). The problem? It's a head injury. While it doesn't seem to be too serious, and Tortorella has listed Sauer as day-to-day, there's simply no way of knowing when he will be back.
The Staal situation is a perfect example of an injury that didn't seem to be too bad take on a life of its own. I'm not saying that's going to happen to Sauer, but it's something to be aware of.
Stralman was brought in for a reason though, and this is exactly where that comes into play. Stralman was held out of games when he first signed, and spend a significant amount of time both learning the system and Tortorella's style of play. That might be a factor that behooves the Rangers as they are forced to baptize Stralman by fire.
We'll keep you posted on any updates on Sauer's condition. Until then, thoughts?

Going to be a little nerve-wracking on the road when the home team keeps matching up their top line(s) opposite Stralman/Woywitka and Eminger/MDZ.
Can we bump Girardi up to about 52 minutes?
It hasn’t been that big a problem this year. I have the home/road TOI splits for the top lines. Definitely worse on the road, but Girardi/McDonagh still eat the vast majority of those minutes.

That means good work by Torts managing the match-ups right?
"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

may not mean much, but...
Last paragraph of the Anisimov article on NHL.com:
Tortorella also announced that injured defenseman Marc Staal, who has been out since training camp with post-concussion symptoms, will be making the trip to Buffalo for Saturday’s game. Staal has been skating lightly, but the Rangers have not given a timetable or target date for his return.
well he has been coming on our road trips so he can skate in the morning skate with the trainers…

This is NOT good news
I suppose we stick with Stralman until he sucks. If/when that happens, then what? Erixon?

Heard through the grapevine that Erixon’s injured…
If only we had a dominant offensive defenseman like Wade Redden..
I remember hearing that V-tank
was mildly injured during training camp/early season. Is he fully healthy and playing well? I’d love to see his shot from the point on the PP — almost anything’s better than MDZ’s non-shot (although he’s been a bit better of late).

Not sure how he is being used matchup wise..
But offense is down. Just 8 helpers so far. Erixon is getting pp time and i think redden plays with bickel.

Stralman gave me a few panic attacks back there last game. Although by the end of the night I was staring at McD.
