Rangers Recap: Rangers Kane-d in Atlanta, Lose 3-2, Skid Hits 6
With talk earlier in the day about Henrik Lundqvist opening a restaurant in Tribeca, his teammates decided to open a bakery where turnovers are the house specialty. The Atlanta Thrashers took advantage and got two late goals from Evander Kane to defeat the Rangers, 3-2 tonight at the Philips Arena in Atlanta.
Anthony Stewart got things going for the Thrashers midway through the first when he slid the puck under Lundqvist's pads to give Atlanta the lead. Stewart scored after a giveaway by Artem Anisimov and Matt Gilroy fell down trying to get back on the play.
Early in the second period the Rangers broke through. With Stewart in the penalty box, Marc Staal tied the game for the Rangers. Marian Gaborik and Vinny Prospal got the assists.
Brandon Dubinsky gave the Rangers their first lead since the Carter Administration just over a minute into the third period. That ended a streak of 255:35 where they had not had a lead. Later in the period Marian Gaborik missed on a penalty shot after being pulled down on a breakaway by Brent Sopel. Unfortunately, the Rangers visit with the advantage would be brief.
With six minutes to go, Evander Kane took over. First, he tied the game, and then after Michael Del Zotto takes a horrible tripping penalty, he scored on the power play to send the Rangers to their sixth straight loss, maybe the worst one yet. A game the Rangers had complete control of got away from them because of pure stupidity. Turnovers and dumb penalties did them in.
Final Thoughts:
- Marian Gaborik had a good night, two assists and was a presence on the ice all night. I don't really fault him on the penalty shot, he made a good move, and Ondrej Pavelec stayed with it and made the save.
- I thought Matt Gilroy and Del Zotto both played tonight like they want Steve Eminger to have more playing time.
- Del Zotto's game is not right, and I've changed my tune on him. He needs to go back to Hartford, for the rest of the season, and start over in September. John Tortorella was chewing him out on the bench after Atlanta took the lead, and he had the same look my four year old daughter gets when I yell at her.
- Henrik Lundqvist had little help from his defense tonight. I thought only the Stewart goal was his fault.
- Sean Avery had a strong game as well, until he took a dumb penalty in the third period.
- As a Prustbyterian, it was tough to see Brandon Prust on the receiving end in a fight with Eric Boulton in the first period. Brandon probably would have been best served skating away from that one, because it did seem to serve to jumpstart the Thrashers.
- Are the Rangers happy to be playing the Penguins Sunday, or is it the other way around?

Uhhh, no. looked like shit from start to finish. There was nothing positive to take away from this game. Nothing.
we dominated the game save for the turnovers…we had total offensive control for two periods…it wasnt a bad game from start to finish

Gaborik was flying tonight, shame he didn’t finish on the penalty shot and a few other chances but it was good to see him doing the things that make him effective tonight.
Try not to jump off the cliff guys, I know it is hard but this is yet another one goal loss and we played well enough to win the game tonight. Not going to pretend it wasn’t a gutting loss but there were plenty of positives to take from it, Dubi goal, PP goal for Staalsy, etc.
If we can find a way to not be trailing after the first period after outplaying the other team I think we will be just fine.

We definitely did NOT play well enough to win the game tonight. a 1 goal loss is still a loss. Forget all of the other stats and how great Gabby looked tonight, we can’t finish. We’re worn down from grinding it out in the first half. We are going to spend the rest of this season doing exactly what the Rangers have done since the lock-out, fighting for the last spot. I’m sick of Torts and Sullivan. Their coaching has helped this team do NOTHING but learn to grind it out until the end, which is good since we haven’t seen that for years, but it isn’t winning hockey. This team needs an infusion of skill. Not finesse, skill. We also need a new coach.
We played better in the first period than the Thrashers but still managed to end the period down a goal. They finished with 6 more shots than we did. I think we played well enough to win tonight.

Overreaction in my opinion, Torts was in talks for Jack Adams two or three weeks ago and now we are calling for him to be strung up?

Excuse me boys...
I’ve said that Torts needs to go from the begining. I haven’t changed my tune. I never mentioned that he should get the Jack Adams. That would be a joke. Torts is an AHL coach at best. He has absolutely no idea how to set up a PP. He beats his guys into the dust and wears them down. He did it in Tampa with more talent and won a Cup. He’s doing it here because he’s got an owner and GM who are loyal to a fault. If anybody thinks that Torts is going to win a Cup here, keep drinking the Kool Aid.
Totally agree
Never understood the Adams Trophy talk at all, The players have been winning games this year DESPITE the coach. Funny how he has no second thoughts reaming MDZ a new one (See also last year’s over reaction 2 mins after a MDZ penalty) but I wonder, just wonder, did he ream out Gaborik after missing the PS? Same thing right, under-performance of what’s expected right? Or what about Gilroy or any of the other giveawayers? His maniacal outbursts during the game at a 20 year old are just plain uncalled for, non-productive and unprofessional. This from the same coach who claims he does not go in the locker room immediately after a loss so he won’t over react to the team’s performance …what about not over-reacting during a game, for christ sakes! MDZ had trouble with a spinning puck and was forced to take a penalty. Ok, one play, that maybe indirectly led to one goal against. Cost us the game? Worthy of a bench tirade? Ummmm – NO! Tortorella has no perspective on the big picture of this season, youth development or any 5 year plan for this organzation. That has been obvious from day one and continues to rear its ugly head…now more than ever…
Ream out a player that made a good move to get a breakaway and then another good move on the PS but was stopped in a situation that statistically favors the goaltender?
After that statement please excuse us for taking your coaching critique with a grain of salt.

Yeah, that was a great move on the PS to push the shot into Pavelec’s pads instead of lifting it over them. Bravo Gabby!
Totally missing the point
Blueshirt – I was not suggesting the coach go after Gaborik’s move (which , by the way was pretty lame considering he has one of the best SHOTS in the league and like Beuk said, if he’s going to deke, he should have at least lifted it.) My point was why pick on MDZ when others were just as “responsible” for losing the game with individual gaffes that affected the outcome. That’s it. He should have laid into MDZ AFTER the game, if at all, OR been just as demonstrative with Gaborik (depsite how well he played) or even Staal who mishandled the second-goal rebound or anyone else. No reason to single out any individualy player in a TEAM game, let alone an impressionable 20 year old. Period.

unless i miss my guess, torts wasn’t reaming his out about the spinning puck, it was the soft pass around the boards to gilroy before that play. It was an “excuse me I don’t want it you take it” low percentage play to a pressured partner that forced giroy to quickly try to give it back to him. The spinning puck was the unfortunate result, but he needs to be more definative with his decisions.

Oh Please,
He’s 20 and making, what, at least a couple of hundred thousand dollars a year? He’s been told repeatedly to adjust his game. He’s been working day in day out with coaches on improving and he’s stagnant. Torts puts his reputation on the line when he plays a skater. He has every right to demand something in return. Stop babying Del Zotto.
Torts did the right thing.
d
Im sure you are talking about coaches fragile ego wright. Becaus i dont think MDZ hase egon problem at all. He is just a kid.
and kids don’t have undeserved egos. Big Ale…you are pushing this issue too much. Its getting a bit ridiculous. At some point, we can agree to disagree and then watch how things develop. I think you are wrong, but maybe you are right. I guess we’ll see. Those of us who are older understand that most of this stuff will ultimately come out in the laundry one day. When we look back in ten years maybe we’ll see a coach who won the Jack Adams and two more cups or maybe we’ll see a coach who took a young team with a lot of talent and turned them into schizo cases.
And, when we look back in ten years, maybe we’ll see a kid who became a hall of Famer despite struggling in his first two years in the league…or….maybe we’ll see a kid who had a lot of promise but never put all the pieces together. That’s what happens to a good 80% of prospects by the way.
In the meantime you are simply arguing for the sake of arguing because this comes down to a matter of personal opinion. Its not really provable.
d
‘AHL coach at best’ … Stanley Cup, that is more or less all I have to say about that.
Forgive me for mixing you up with other people who were hot on Torts and cold on him less than two weeks later. Is there room for improvement with Torts and how he coaches the team? Yeah, plenty of room. But he isn’t ill-equipped to coach this team. Don’t get me wrong, I am not a huge Torts guy but I don’t think firing the coach is going to do a whole lot for the team right now other than prolong the current losing streak and completely change the identity and character of the team right before the playoffs.

I’m not saying that he should be fired now. Wait until the end of the season. He won the Cup because he had more raw talent in Tampa then he has now, which is not necessrily his fault. The fact that we are in every game is an improvement, I’ll give him that. But this team seems to always be in the same spot in the standingsand there is absolutely no clue how to run a PP. At what point will Torts be held accountable for mediocrity year after year? A 6 game losing streak and 3-6-1 in our last 10 IS a reason to react because something’s wrong. Torts’ response is usually to shake up and juggle lines and yell alot. Neither of which accomplishes anything.
I think Sullivan should be put on the hot seat. The powerplay has been god-awful. If anyone on the coaching staff is or should be in jeopardy it should be him.

Definitely not his strong point. Combine that with a team that doesn’t have many huge PP guys, it’s a problem.
I would like to see them go out and get another assistant coach just for special teams. Let Sullivan concentrate on the defensive aspect.

you’ve based your expert opinion on what exactly? The maybe 1% of his total interaction with the players you get to see through the TV screen?
How arrogant can you be that you think you know his relationship with the players, and can tear it apart based on essentially zero valid evidence?
It dose not mater that Gaby was flying we will not win many gams this year. Its hard to win games that one mistake will louse as the game and that is Tortorellas style. Now you guys that think is Gabys foult for us not wining can see how wrong you are.
I disagree.
It DOES matter that Gaby was flying. This is a significant improvement from him floating. When players are flying, the goals come. If he continues the play he showed against ATL, the goals will come. In hockey, the process is just as important as the result.

Are you sayig that Tampa is wining with out the great coach named Tortorella? Wow i did not think that was posible!!!!
not sure I understand your point. Are you saying that there is a causal relationship between Torts not coaching the team and them winning Seven Years Later?

Do you honestly think this team is a Cup contender? Do you want to watch this team stuck in Groundog Day the way it’s been for the past 2+ years? I think you are the one lacking in logic and reality. We’re playing our way out of a playoff spot, and you think we’re overreacting? Maybe if we haven’t seenit before, you’d have a leg to stand on.
Who ever said that this team was a cup contender? Cooler minds have always said this is a rebuilding year and we are a couple of years and a couple of pieces away. This team IS much different than any of the previous years since the lockout. It is a short sighted view that leads to kneejerk reactions like yours.

No, it has been said over and over and over that this team is not a contender. That is not the expectation excepting for some over zealous fans who cant comprehend the concept of rebuilding while trying to stay competitive.

What exactly are we building if we are rebuilding? We have a great young team that has shown improvement, but unless you haven’t seen a game since Torts has been the coach, the PP is actually getting worse, the guys look burned out, and Torts has again proven that he has no idea how to effectively use the player who have skill. What do you hope to see in the future with Torts as the coach and Sather as the GM?
If you think it is hopeless with Sather as a GM, you may as well go find another team because he isn’t going anywhere.

There is not one other player besides all of these players . . .

Your all of 20 years of life experience huh…lol If you don’t like it, don’t read it. There seems to be this elitist mentality on this site that I don’t like either. Certain guys get to have opinions and you all pat each other on the back and discount everyone else who doesn’t agree with you. In what may seem like the reactionaries coming out of the woodwork are in actuality people who have been watching hockey long enough to spot ebbs and flows without having to quote stats and crunch numbers to prove points. It isn’t, however, the popular opinion so for the most part no one says anything.
it’s not the opinions that get me frustrated, it’s the extreme bi-polar personalities that one day call us cup contenders after beating Vancouver, then throw themselves off the Verrazano when things go poorly. It’s the stuff that gives NY it’s reputation outside the city confines. It’s a rebuilding year, they are better than last year, cap space is opening up, there is finally talented youth both on the big club and in the system. Relax, enjoy and stay the course. Be happy we’re not the Islanders who still can figure out how to rebuild.

Youn think that becuse my grammer is bad that i am unintelligent, but I dont give a shit about that. That only says who you are.
You are not making an argument:
Argument: n. A set of statements in which one follows logically as a conclusion from the others.
Winning coaching record. Stnaley Cup winner. Multiple players on the team saying he is a great coach. Team over achieving. Young players developing.
How does this logically lead to ‘buffoon of a coach’?

Because IMO he is not good on non of the things you ara pointing out. He is destroying the old talent and not devaloping the new one. You seen how hi handled MDZs situation last night. Do you agree how he did it? i deffenetly dont.
You’re making an argument based on so little evidence, it’s absurd. We all saw what happened on the bench – but none of us, you included, see what happens in practice, or in the locker room between periods, or the countless other times in which he interacts with the players. To base your opinion solely on a short clip of him chewing out a player (deservedly so, by the way), is ridiculous.
He is destroying the old talent and not devaloping the new one.
And this is totally baseless. You’re welcome to believe it if you want, but don’t act like we’re all idiots if we disagree, because you have zero evidence to go on with this argument.
I am not telling you not to disagree. Im just saying what I think and you dont like it so you go back to cretisise my spelling even tho you understand every think Im saying.

Tonight’s big gripe came after the second period buzzer, when Avery wanted a slashing call against Andrew Ladd. Avery skated around the neutral zone, swinging his stick like a scythe, indicating he had been slashed. But his miming fell on deaf ears.

Ale, you serious?
I could not care if Prust had the least talent in the whole league, he has the heart and leadership that every team needs. He scores a few clutch goals, he has no fear, he can hit, and he is not too shabby in the corners either. Everyone forgets that Prust is a middle weight fighting heavyweights all the time.

i think all of this lack of finish and being down after controlling periods comes from a lack of experience due from being a young team…to put this in a more positive perspective this is a good learning point for some of these young kids that will be around for a while.
Let this team readjust itself, they are doing a lot of good things and just cant seem to put it all together

Proudly suffering as a Ranger fan.
"C'mon, vagina is my 3rd favorite hole." -Drama
The briefest of readings of that quote would reveal something that is blatantly obvious, it was a joke. It involves putting a feline into a microwave oven (that should be a big ‘hint’ about the nature of the quote being a joke). Furthermore the quote doesn’t directly insult Alex Kovalev, (though I have done that elsewhere) it suggests that Kovalev would not perform well under coach John Tortorella.
Kovalev has a notoriously poor work ethic, which has only gotten worse in the twilight of his career. He is all-world in talent, but he just wouldn’t fit into Torts’ system. I love what he did for the Rangers in 1994, he helped us get the cup, but he isn’t a God, he isn’t without flaw or fault, he is a hockey player. I get that you respect Kovalev and what he did while he was here (at least the first time around) but that was 17 years ago.

I don't know if you watch baseball but the San Francisco Giants turned themselves
from one of the worst offensive teams to a league average one by essentially adding spare parts. The reason they won the World Series, in many cases, was by adding spare parts. They never changed their philosophy and they didn’t trade away young talent/ proven talent to win.

Speaking of the Isles if you are on the ledge
Go drink the tears of a hypocritical pens blog it is the only thing that got me happy after this horrible loss. posts like how cant the league regulate headshots and saying players need to be suspended it was a huge comedy.
Gillies and Martin should be suspended. Godard will get at least 10 for leaving the bench. But that game was out of hand and guys on both teams are going to get the book thrown at them. I’d be pissed off to if I was a Penguins fan. The Islanders gooned it up like crazy tonight.

Was out celebrating a friend’s birthday, caught most of the game on the bar tube, sorry I missed the thread.
What the fuck is Torts thinking about chewing MDZ out on the bench like that? The whole god-damn point of this newest “we’re keeping him here because we want to develop him here” looks like another lie. You don’t develop somebody by completing lacing into them on the bench like that. I see some of the veterans make worse plays than that and not get anywhere near that type of tirade. There’s coaching, and then there’s just being an asshole. I really don’t agree with it. You take the kid aside next practice in the video room and explain it to him. You don’t embarrass him on TV, on the bench with his teammates, looking like a pissed-off father about to kick his kid’s ass for throwing a baseball through the window. I’ll have to watch it again..but damn. Didn’t look good.
Didn’t catch the first goal for Atlanta…2nd goal…bad bounces but it really looked to me like Staal had a chance to clear that puck, whiffed on it, then screened Henrik on the Kane backhander.
Nice to see Staal rushing the net on our power-play goal. It’s about time the coaching staff changed things up by having that D-man move the puck and then crash the crease. Only took 60 games before somebody had a creative thought.
Gaborik…finally seemed to be engaged more in the game, but he always does this when the pressure becomes unbearable after one of his many cold-streaks this season. Gotta score on the penalty shot…guy’s closing in on 300 career goals vs. a rookie goalie..screw the deke, use your shot. We’ll see if today’s game translates into the future.
Another good effort, it seems, wasted. It’s just another growing pain for a young team. They seem to have figured out one of the most important aspects, which is hard work. Soon enough they’ll figure out how to win close ones.

What the fuck is Torts thinking about chewing MDZ out on the bench like that?
Del Zotto looked like he was gutted by what Torts said. Poor kid. In all fairness Torts didn’t really seem to be laying it on hard, he wasn’t doing the crazy arm gestures and snarly face routine that we have seen before. But it was clear that it freaked out MDZ. After the game Torts said the following:
AGrossRecord Andrew Gross
Torts says Del Zotto turnover wasn’t the issue on penalty that led to winner. Torts says puck should have never been back there.
@DigDeepNYR
"I like a man who grins when he fights." -Sir Winston Churchill
"It's just pain." -Brandon Prust | "In Prust we Trust."
I only saw the replay a few times, but from what I saw the puck looked like it took a funny bounce on MDZ while he waited for it, and then dove trying to poke-check it. Granted, he should have pulled his stick out when it was obvious he had no chance of getting near the puck.
Did the puck come off MDZ’s stick or the wall? Not sure how exactly it went out like that.
Either way…MDZ looked like he was going to just break down while Torts was lacing into him.
Blueshirt Banter *It's just pain.*
nail – head. I said it earlier, the decision that got the puck back there was the issue, not the physical spinning puck turnover.

hey devils fan here. do you guys think biron will play more down the strech? not that hank played bad tonight, but im kinda surprised that he is playing just about as much as he normally does over the course of a year. wasent the idea of brining biron in to give hank more rest? i think hes played well enough to get a few more starts, but now the rangers are in a position where they need to win most of there games so hank will probably start 95% of the rest of the games.
also wanted to say, i dont know about them needing skill, but the team needs a veteran pressence. it seems since the end of the 08 season whan jagr, shannahan, and straka left this teams seems to struggle a lot more over the course of the year. even more so since gomez was traded. (not to say hes really good, but he was a veteran who knew how to win.) i think stepan is there future at center so i dont know if it makes sense to go after a big name centerman unless its only for the short term.
finally i do think torts is an alright coach, but this is not the right team for him. he has the most success with experienced teams. this team has so many youngsters who havent had success in the nhl.
Wasnt the idea of brining biron in to give hank more rest?
If things stay on the same pace (Lundqvist 42 starts, Biron 15), Lundqvist would finish with 60 starts, his lowest total since his rookie year. So the plan w/ Biron is right on course. I’d imagine it’s realistic to think that over the last 25 games, they’ll split it 18-7. Maybe closer to 20-5 depending on the playoff race, but still less than the 70+ Henrik has gotten every year. I definitely don’t see Henrik getting 24 of the last 25. (96%, close enough)
Rangers don’t need to win “most of their games,” but they need to be better. 90 points should get them in barring something crazy, which is only in 13-10-2, barely above .500.
If we were making a cup run, I’d agree on the veteran needed. Despite the hoopla and the excitement, this is still a year where the team is trying to ‘build from the ground up’ with the kids. That they’re competitive is a plus, but the last thing this team needs right now is to start trading off youth to try to make a hollow run at the Cup. In the offseason when Fedotenko, Prospal, etc come off the books, they can address the veteran/leadership issues in FA.
Must be fun in Devs land now that the ship has righted itself.

Gilroy and MZA should be Whale for the rest of the season.
Eminger at times is pretty good.
The Rangers should try and find a defenseman, not named Sheldon Souray.
I think the team as a whole needs a break. I think Torts has been very good for the Rangers this year, but I think maybe they should do something NOT HOCKEY related as a team. coaches, trainers, everyone.

Torts take a Valium
Torts is out of line with that yelling shit. It’s self-serving and immature, using a kid to ventiilate his frustration onto, a kid who can’t talk back. He’s always talking about teaching, tha’ts not how you teach. That’s how you alienate players and get them to hate you. Torts is the one that said will live with our kids and their mistakes, well then live with it.
Having said that, I thought MDZ was pretty bad, and got worse as the game went on.
He should have been back in Hartford the day Girardi got healthy.
When Torts was yelling at MDZ, I wondered at one point if he would literally sink his teeth into his face, like De Niro in Cape Fear or Hannibal Lecter.

Maybe you sink in a corner when your boss yells at you because you screwed up the TPS reports, but this is the big leagues. It is job to correct him and call out his bad play.
Should he have poured some tea and gave him a cookie before he told him that daddy was not very happy with how he played?
If he is going to screw up and cant take a little yelling by the coach then that is even more of a reason he belongs in the minors. It’s a growing process.

Getting the team to hate him is the plan – it’ll bring them closer together. It’s rather cynical but it won’t backfire….
c’mon… didn’t you watch Major Payne?
You are most likely talking to people that have been coddled their whole life. never put in a challenging situation, never played on any sort of intense team sport, never been in the military. They wont get it.
Funny how they know what makes a good coach yet I don’t see them in them coaching. Millions upon millions of dollars in the business, run by CEO’s and people who obviously know what they are talking about when it come to the subject of hockey. They entrust a multimillion dollar assets to this person.
But these few kids texting from their break and McDonald’s know what they are talking about. They are in the locker room. They know Torts personally, maybe they were even coached by him given their extraordinary knowledge of hockey.
Is he a perfect coach? Of course not. Are some people not motivated by his coaching? Probably. A coaches job is not to be liked, its to coach, teach and win. For the most part he has done his job very well.

Do you always make up fictional identities for people who disagree with you about hockey?
Here’s the idenitity you’ve constructed, for those who disagree with you about Torts and his yelling:
1. Sinks in a corner when his boss yells at him.
2. Has been coddled his whole life.
3. Has never beeen put in a challenging situation.
4. Has never played an intense team sport.
5. Has never been in the military.
6. Won’t get it.
7. Is not in coaching.
8. Works in some sort of business worth millions of dollars, that is run by CEO’s.
9. He also may have another identity as a kid texting from McDonald’s on a break froms chool.
Seriously, you sound like a crazy person with these condescending assumptions about people who disagree with you. Don’t take it so personally, it’s a disagreement about a coaching style. That’s what the site is for, differing opinions.

whoa
While I agree with the thick skin mentality, and virtually everything you said, one of the tenants of leadership (especially in the military) is “praise in public, repremand in private”. There is a time and place for an ass-chewing if it serves a greater need. Public demonstration by a leader should accomplish much the same as a fight in hockey – it serves as a motivation tool – same as in the military. You don’t chew a sailor’s ass to demean, you do it to motivate, both for him and those around him. Last, I like to think folks (like me) come to this site to rant with other passinate Ranger fans. Yes, we’ve never played NHL hockey, although some of us have played at very competative levels and still serve in our nations military. If you’re a soldier, sailor, airman or Marine, please don’t quote you’re service as a badge of honor, our place is to serve, appreciate and defend our nations freedoms.

Orrrrr…….. Maybe MDZ just needs to toughen up. This is the big leagues, and ANYONE would give their left and right nuts to play in the NHL. If he cant take a little yelling from the coach, how is he going to play when the game is really tough??(As in playoffs or against tough teams.) Hey at this point, I don’t think Torts expects him to play a great game, just don’t suck. Don’t make bad plays. Look at MCD, he is just solid out there, playing hockey 101, the basics. Although I played Nostradumass earlier and stated Eminger in on Sunday, I wouldn’t bet against seeing MDZ playing in Sunday’s game. Maybe see how MDZ reacts, and to throw him back in. Sink or swim. This is the big leagues. Mommy and daddy arent around to hold your hand, and they sure as hell arent around to shuttle you from game to game like when you were on a travel team. Sink or swim buddy, sink or swim. No floaties either.
I didn't think Torts yelled that much...
We have seen Torts explode, and that wasn’t it. It seemed like an appropriate level of discipline. I was yelling at MDZ through my tv more than Torts was.

Really, if that level of ‘anger’ bothers you, go find another sport…better yet another city to live in. There is no way you will survive in NYC with skin as thin as that.

How would you react I ask you.I am sure you will react the same way. I guarenty you will not play better. How can you play better when you were just humiliated by your coach. He is a terrible person.
I would be pissed. I would go out next shift to prove him wrong. I would be challenged to be be better. I would be embarrassed I let my teammates down.
You apparently would sit in the corner and cry.

HOW old are you? Thats what I tought. MDZ is 20 years old with inormus responcability on him in only secand year in the ligue. We all know that if it was up to Tortorella MDZ would be in the minors. THanks God for Sather hi is not. You have to let him develop and develop in NHL not AHL. AHL will not do any good for his developmant. If they dont think he can play oure style of play than trade him not destroy him.
I refuse to read anymore of your posts, you incredible lack of spelling and lack of caring about getting your point across leaves me to have the same lack of caring about what you are attempting to say.

Can’t fault him for spelling and grammar, he is obviously from another country. Now if you feel that the content of his posts are generally horseshit, then by all means feel free to skip over them.
Actually I highly doubt that. His sentences are not structured as someone whose mother tongue is not English. He just can’t spell. Either can I, but I figured out how to use spell check that way people reading what I write can understand what the hell I am writing.
that and most of his posts are horseshit once you decipher them. Really, the AHL is not the place to develop a 20yr old defenseman.

Getting our opinions doesn't prove anything.
He is a professional athlete who has had to fight through tons of different levels to get where he is now. Nobody here can say that.
A professional athlete does not let his emotions take over his game, no matter the reason. If MDZ can’t do that, he doesn’t belong here.

didn't seem like he chewed him out really. He was probably talking at him, not to him.
But, still did not look bad at all. MDZ needs to man up, I mean he did completely suck. Its not like he is being yelled at by accident.

absolutely.
look, he’s losing the club games. I don’t even know why he’s up here. He’s not ready. Period.
The longer this losing streak goes on, the more I think that before the trading deadline, the Rangers should do…..absolutely nothing.
I totally forgot that
Wolski, Stepan, and Zuccarello played tonight except for one shift.
Proudly suffering as a Ranger fan.

Really? Bunch of people crying about Torts and his ‘screaming tirade’ with MDZ? Take your dresses off girls, that was nothing but a talking to.
He made a bad play that directly led to the loss. You get a talking too by the coach, simple fact.
Torts did cover up for him in the post game.

Agreed. And for what it is worth, I do not think that MDZ was about to cry because Torts is a “big meanie!” He was upset because he was disappointed in himself and knew that he effed up enough to get sent back to the Whalers.
On the MDZ tirade
If Torts sees that as productive, why didn’t MORE guys get that treatment. Our D sucked on EVERY goal last night. Torts should be HOARSE from telling those guts to get it together.
Because these are not identical robots. Different people respond to different approaches, it’s part of a coaches job to figure out which buttons should be pushed and how.
My bet with MDZ with all this talk about his arrogance is that he needs to be knocked down a bit and the rebuilt up.
Which part of “it’s a process” do people not understand?

suddenly the Rangers are the Calgary Flames?
ugh. glad I didn’t see the game.
"Fantasy, reality, science Fiction. Which is which? Who can tell?"
Frustrating loss. What is more frustrating is recovering from an alcohol induced coma resulting from this game. But since there is a lot of doom and gloom going around these parts during this tough stretch, and because there isn’t a place to post and update about Ranger Prospects, Christian Thomas scored 4 goals last night putting him at 41 on the season, three less than the OHL leader.
Anyway, as far as the game goes, the team just CAN’T relax when they have the lead. Gaborik missing the shootout goal was huge.
Better luck next time….
MDZ and Drury are just having nightmare seasons…..and as for everybody who is attacking Torts, tirades against players work for some coaches and some players. Bill Parcells never shied away from that; neither do guys like Peter Laviolette or Mike Babcock. Either way the guy has won a Stanley Cup so he does have the right to utilize his own methods behind the bench. My biggest gripe with Torts’ behavior is that it looks so bad on TV…he looks like he should be a chef or something, with the rage and the gestures and the facial expression. Kind of like Tom Coughlin’s leprechaun with paranoid schizophrenia routine….it probably makes it easier for a player to tune out, actually.
DZ has been so consistently awful this year that Torts just lost it. Fairly understandable from where I’m sitting. There aren’t too many coaches that manage to seem like affable people in this league anyway….
Prole art threat.
Growing Pains
The Rangers have lost 6 in a row, but they had chances to win all of them. It is a young team that makes mistakes and lacks skill players. The Rangers have shown some grit this year, but they still may miss the playoffs. It is a rebuilding year. Get used to it. It will be several years before the Rangers are able to be serious contenders. They lack the experience and necessary skill. The defensemen are extremely young and shaky. The team doesn’t score enough. It will take time for the prospects to find their game.
Tough loss but maybe earned this one
Seemed like we couldn’t handle their pressure/forecheck very well and the turnovers were everywhere. Still, losing in regulation after leading with 6 minutes left is tough to swallow. PP looked a little better and Gabby had a solid game (A+ game if he converts that PS). Hopefully we can do to the Pens what the Fishsticks did to them last night (minus the 295 penalty minutes).
Getting annoying seeing the Devils creep up on us…
Manning lobs it, Burress alone, touchdown New York!
For the empty net, Mark Messier... do you believe it?! Do you believe it?! He said we will win game 6 - he has just picked up the hat trick!
The playoffs are becoming increasingly less likely
as time moves forward. Way too early to hit the panic button, but let’s just say I’m checking the batteries.

Agreed
You can’t lose 6 straight and not at least check the batteries. But, we now find ourselves in a familiar spot. If these guys can grind out a winning streak down the stretch, and we make a smart move or two to address deficiencies, we may have a round or two in us.
this one is USB powered...
so you dont have to check the batteries. :)

I wore my jersey to work, looked forward to it all day, watched it with my father in law (Rangers fan since the early 1950’s!), and then watched the Islanders beat up the Pens because we looked so bad.

don't worry everyone....
we’re getting all the losses out of the way so that we can go on a 20 game win streak to end the season.

Holding On
A very bad way to lose. Two goals in the last 5 minutes of the game. Never liked Torts, but trying to give him the benefit of the doubt this year. The benefit is gone. This team is not responding to him consistently or otherwise. Seems like he’s having a hard time reaching the youngsters, and if that’s the direction this team is going in then Torts needs to go. If they miss the playoffs again he should be gone anyway.

A couple of observations….. I hated that Torts was juggling lines all game, but it seems that since he made the lines stable, we have been on a losing streak. First real losing streak of the season and we are ready to string everyone up by their ’nads? We got used to them pulling games out and winning. How can you guys lose confidence in this team so quickly? They are just making the end run exciting. We were due for a losing streak, and now we are due for a winning streak.
Hey gang
Some neeeews from the twitterverse for you. Including some big stuff.
NYDNRangers Jesse Spector
Eminger to return to #NYR lineup tomorrow. Del Zotto will be scratched.
NYDNRangers Jesse Spector
New #NYR lines: Avery-Anisimov-Stepan, Dubinsky-Prospal-Gaborik, Wolski-Boyle-Callahan, Zuccarello-Christensen-Prust
Stepan is moving to the wing.
AGrossRecord Andrew Gross
Torts says he’s no longer willing to live with the defensive risk of having a Prospal-Christensen-Gaborik line.

Finally Christensen is taking his proper place on the 4th line. Well, I guess the proper place is off the team but doesn’t look like that is gonna happen just yet,.
Lets see. Banching MDZ and putting Christenson on the b4th line is going to amount to a win in pitsburgh in your opinion right? I dont think so.
Well, it certainly can’t hurt, right? After dropping six, we need to change something. Christensen adds nothing to the Gaborik line. Gabby and Prospal are finding their chemistry again, and Christensen adds nothing, every time he touches the puck.
AGrossRecord Andrew Gross
Torts says Del Zotto will remain with the Rangers, even though he’s a healthy scratch. Says Eminger has to play with “bite” to stay in.
I think ‘bite’ may be similar to jam. Maybe it is spicy jam.

ehh, i was thinking more along the lines of grey poupon.
I think Eminger earned his spot in this lineup. I have high hopes for MDZ but he is just not ready.

This is just continuing to show the total clueless approach to Del Zotto this team is taking. I’ve said it a million different ways more times than I care to rehash. They’re going to wind up damaging his mental state for a long time if they keep this up.

Just fine
I think MDZ is going to be allright when this BUFFOONE gets fired. I definetly think he is going to outlast this terrible coach.
