Rangers News: Avery Fed Up with Non-calls

Photo

There were many problems that contributed to the Rangers' 3-2 loss to the Atlanta Thrashers last night at Philips Arena. While the non-call on Andrew Ladd for slashing Sean Avery at the end of the second period may not have been one of them, it is very well a part of the growing concern that Avery is being mistreated by the National Hockey League and its officials.

The incident came after the buzzer signaling the end of the second period. Thrasher captain Andrew Ladd took a clear swipe at the ankles of Avery in the neutral zone, which was seen by the refs but no call was made. Avery pleaded his case, reenacting the lumberjack chop, but to no avail as he was simply ignored.

A livid Sean expressed his anger over the non-call and the way he is treated by the officials when talking to Andrew Gross following the game...

"They tell me to f--- off," Avery said. "That's how they talk to me."

There is no hiding the fact that commissioner Gary Bettman and the NHL are not favorites of Sean Avery, and that was made crystal clear after his sexual reference to the media when he was a member of the Dallas Stars. However, on the ice, the league should be treating him like every other player is treated. I understand that some of his actions and words may be out of line, which warrants a close eye to be kept on him - that's reasonable.

But when he is blatantly hacked at after the play, no matter who he is or what his reputation is, that should be a penalty.

Avery is sick and tired of the mistreatment, and it is not only the refs that are giving it to him. Head coach John Tortorella does not even have his back...

"It wasn't a slash," Tortorella said. "It's not a penalty."

Thoughts?

You would eat his dirty diaper if you could have him on the RANGERS.

so wrong. he’s no messier.

is he a highly skilled guy with great hands and playmaking abilities, definitely top 4 in the league in that regard? no doubt.

is he the kind of guy i’d want to see wearing a blueshirt with a C on it? no thanks. we’ve seen how he handles himself on and off the ice…

I literally just watched the play again and I feel it was not a slash. Honestly. If there was a call it would have been in credibly weak. He slid his stick along the ice into Avery. If anything it’s a borderline slash.

He hit him just below the knees across his shins. Torts is an asshole for not having the back of his players. He never has Avery’s back. There were two fouls committed on him and the refs saw them both times and did NOTHING! It’s bullshit, and he has every right to be pissed. Knowing Bettman, he’ll fine him for his comment about the refs.

by AveryGod on Feb 12, 2011 1:29 PM EST up reply actions

It would have been a weak call had it been made at all. the problem here is Torts not backing up his guys. At the very least, Torts could have said, “It was not a penalty, but when are the officials going to stop the double standard when it comes to certain players? The on-ice officials need make the right call regardless of who it is for or against.” It’s no secret that Torts and Aves are not close, but You have to back your guys.

Tort’s NEVER backs up his players and the players are getting tired of his BS…..
All the overpaid Veterans get a pat on the back, while Avery and MDZ get the shaft every time from Tort’s……
Time for a change……I can deal with all the young talent and the growing pains, what I can not deal with is Tort’s pathetic coaching style that is not working…..we do not need a coach with a .500 winning record with the Rangers and a Ranger’s team that can not win at HOME….for Tort’s entire Ranger’s career

by NYR94 on Feb 12, 2011 9:31 PM EST up reply actions

Who cares

Avery doesn’t really produce much anyway…Rangers should cut him and hopefully no smart team should pick him up…he’s a headcase and a loser!

by GODEVS on Feb 12, 2011 9:34 PM EST up reply actions

there was also the boulton incident in, i think it was the third, where boulton shouldered avery to the ice in between whistles as both teams were changing and the refs didn’t call it where they were looking right at the play

That was the call that should been made.

the slash was a good non-call. Of course roles reversed and Avery is on the ice swinging his stick – call is made (and I guess that is part of the point of the story).

Torts has got to go

If we lose for a seventh straight time to the Pens, I really think it’s time he gets the pink slip. He has not been good coach, he doesn’t have his own players back, he humiliated Del Zotto for the entire world to see, he promised the Power Play would improve and it hasn’t and I could go on and on

by The Last Shall Become First on Feb 12, 2011 1:29 PM EST reply actions

Agreed

Look out…the elitists are going to start calling for your head! I say he finishes the season and then Slats goes out and gets a coach who CAN improve the power play and get the players up to the requisite skill level to finish plays and use their talents to do something beyond bump and grind in the corners.

Im not a Tortorella fan but he isnt going anywhere. The problem is not the coaching its the execution.

how is Tortella the problem?

he is a great coach, who could you get to replace him that is better?
the only thing I fault Torts for is the PP, he needs to do something about that but last night our PP looked ALOT better with the adjustments he made
Torts is a great coach with the personality needed in New York
this year is basically the first year he has his type of team with his type of players for his system and he is still lacking a skilled center and a scoring winger besides Gaborik
if Torts gets those 2 things, this team will take the next step
right now we are going through our season slump, every team has one
look at the Capitals who lost like what 7 games in a row?
every team has one of these periods throughout the season
we will rise above this

this team is young and talented we have alot of the right pieces, next year we will be ready for a deep playoff run I guarantee that
look at how the young talent his thrived under Torts
Dubinsky is a All Star caliber player now Anismov is growing Callahan is growing into a great 2 way forward Staal is a lockdown dman Girardi is lockdown Stepan is a budding All Star MZA is a star Wolski is still adjusting to the system but he is going to be solid as well Boyle is becoming All Star quality Prust is a great 2 way player Feds was good
Torts is the right guy, the coaching staff isnt the problem
its the execution and lacking a true playmaking center
also we dont have dominat centers on the faceoff
we lack a true scoring threat other than Gaborik

Is it really just Tortorella responsible for the power play?? When was the last time this team had a real power play?? Keenan??? I think one of the things they really need is a true offensive defense-man. I really thought Del Zotto would help fill that need when he first arrived and I still think he can somewhere down the line, but right now he has to get his head screwed on straight.

by I hate people on Feb 13, 2011 12:35 AM EST up reply actions

major disagree.

you cannot say the rangers are at the top of the league when it comes to skill. you also can’t argue that the same roster would succed in the current nhl under tom renney and his style of coaching. you also must acknowledge that the rangers record, especially the away record, is a direct result of torts’ system. the most glaring evidence is how successful this club has been this year without its top players, meaning the system was working for the club rather than the stars.

i like torts and what he’s trying to do alot, and i think he’s here to stay, at least for another year. that’s fine with me if they don’t make it past the second round this year, the kids are not ready yet…there’s so much good right around the corner, it would be a waste to think about coaching alternatives just because the guys out there lack the experience needed to consistently succeed at this level.

by #17ToTheRafters on Feb 13, 2011 2:01 AM EST up reply actions

“It wasn’t a slash,” Tortorella said. “It’s not a penalty.”

Translation: “Of course it was a slash, but I’m not allowed to say that otherwise I’m going to get myself in deep sh*t.”

It’s bad enough the officials blatantly turn a blind eye to most of the infractions committed against Avery. The last thing Tortorella wants to do is get his entire team blacklisted.

by AZRangerFan on Feb 12, 2011 1:31 PM EST reply actions

agreed

i think he’s also trying to show that there was much more to worry about after the game instead of a non-call at the end of the second. Even if it was called, there’s no guarantee it translates into anything other than the 2-1 lead they ended up getting 71 seconds into the third.

In 'Defense" of Torts...

he actually did address this “NHL officials vs. Sean Avery” issue in a post-game press conference last year, basically stating that Avery had served his time, did his sentence, etc. and now it’s time to stop treating him like a pariah. I’ll be damned if I can remember exactly when it was – probably 10-15 games after Avery was reinstated, as Avery basically got pushed around and roughed up while the officials looked the other way. Anyway, my point is Avery, for the rest of his career, will NEVER get the benefit of the doubt because of his reputation and history. It’s bullshit, but that’s the way it is folks.

some of you really make this hangover that much easier

cuz im laughing at half of the comments above me.

First of all, it shouldn’t have been a penalty. Joe Mich was even asking for a penalty and making a big deal out of it, but it was just a little love tap with the thrashers stick sliding across the ice. The right call was made, and i think Ave’s is just fed up with everything, not only this call, but the losing streak and other times when he cant draw any penalties.

Second of all, and most important of all, STFU and stop asking for tort’s head. He should have had his players back in this situation no matter what he really thought…but you wanna fire him cuz were dealing with the first bad losing streak of the year? are you kidding me? ranger fans comon now!!!! stop with this bullshit.

Just weeks ago Torts was being mentioned as a Jack Adams candidate, by none other than ranger fans!!!

Now because were dealing with the first losing streak of the season you want to cut him off. Give me a break. The Hawks lost 9 in a rom last year, won the cup. The Caps lost 8 in a row this year. Every team deals with a horrendous losing streak.

Knock some sense into eachother and stop talking out of your asses. Torts is a hard coach, the coach a NYC team needs. Someone we’ve been begging for ever since Renney started losing the team. Torts is not losing this team, not even close. Their not blowout loses. Their not due to a lack of effort for the WHOLE game. This team has it in them and its cuz of the coaching staff.

by polishBLUE on Feb 12, 2011 2:28 PM EST reply actions

The Rangers are struggling because there is no creativity, no puck pressure in the slot.

Everything is to the outside.

Everything.

Not to mention all the injuries the Rangers have had. Tortorella has done a good job keeping the team in games. It’s amazing how fast you people turn your back on him.
For crying out loud, you people should be loving him…at his insistence to play the kids.

A boring, dump and chase, deep cycle with the puck and no quality shots is not a winning style that seems to work for the Rangers….and this IS Tort’s style.

Avery's just frustrated

this play really didn’t seem like a slash, but he was probably pissed at the other play where Boulton knocked him to his ass as they were skating to their bench and they called nothing (and probably numerous others where he had a gripe but got no call).

Should Torts back him up? Sure, I guess (but LOL at firing him for this…).

by j-red on Feb 12, 2011 2:48 PM EST reply actions

No, Avery was called

He picked up a slash on that. I think Boulton knocking him down during a break and not getting called was the real crime. Anyone who thinks that it would have been the same non-call if it was Avery who knocked down Boulton is full of shit. Plus, the charging call on Avery in the 3rd was very weak.

Funny

For dose of you that thing that Avery should get the same calls as Crosby, I am laghing…HA HA HA Avery is a scum-bag and Crasby is the best player in the NHL. It just dont work that way. Because he dase not get the calls it is more of a reason to trade him or buy him out.

by big ale on Feb 12, 2011 3:53 PM EST reply actions

I’m curious why is Avery a scumbag? Does he hit guys with cheap shots? I know Crosby has. I’ve seen him slewfoot several Rangers. Because Avery talked about sloppy seconds and is a pest does that translate into him being a scumbag closr to the likes of Matt Cooke? I don’t think it does at all. We can’t trade him and why buy him out, he is not a bad player to have on this team.

personality and skill should have no bearing on how the game is called. nobody is bigger than the rules.

Not Sean Avery, not Sidney Crosby, not even the great one. They all have to play and abide by the same rules. A good example would be Michael Vick. I HATE, HATE, HATE Michael Vick. However, when he plays football he still should get the same calls no matter what he has done in the past.

I understand that it doesn’t necessarily happen that way. There will always be a slight bias, and sometimes that bias can affect calls, consciously or unconsciously. Say what you will about Sean Avery’s personality, but the fact is he doesn’t get the calls he deserves.

If I could I would have none of them. Avery is not any better then the ather 2. .Considering what he gives and what he takes awy from the team. He takes alot of stupid penaltis.

by big ale on Feb 12, 2011 4:27 PM EST up reply actions

its hard to truly tell if he actually takes more penalties than other players.

Sure, a referee can make a call against him that is correct. But maybe that same call is a non call for someone else in the same situation. Its harder to quantify his penalty numbers since he seemingly has a target instead of a number on his jersey to these referees.

Its similar to holding in football. Every play in football, there is holding. Anybody who has played on the line in football will tell you this. Yet, it isn’t always called. I feel that a lot of people do things similar to what Avery does, yet they do not get called for it.

TORTS..........

Wants Avery gone just as bad as every Ranger fan wants Drury gone. Personally I like Avery. He is a hard working forward and creates good chances from behind the net it seems every game. But one thing I do know is that if you pull what Avery pulls with the slashes at the skates on other players and the hit to the back of the head on Tim Thomas a few years back you establish a reputation. Now he needs to live with it.

Avery???

Listen, I like Avery because he gives it his all. He may have a big mouth, but I have never classified him as a dirtbag player. You have guys out there who intentionally try to end other players careers and the league lets them skate by. I really don’t understand their hard on for Avery over the Cookes and Rutuu’s of the world. I did not see the slash at the ned of the game so I can’t say whether or not I think it was one. Doesn’t really matter to me because I have seen enough other blatant penalties against Avery that were not called, even with the ref looking right at it!! The officials job is to call the game impartially no matter what their feelings are for the player or his team. End of story!! If the league can’t get officials who can’t keep their personal feelings from interfering with their jobs, then they should replace them!!!!

by I hate people on Feb 12, 2011 4:47 PM EST reply actions

I guess you don’t mind when the refs have their back turned and Avery slashes players…I love the rough stuff in Hockey…..it’s part of the game but if every player played the game like Avery I would turn off the TV. Saying that, if they are actual Ranger fans, just because 10 fans out of thousands post negative comments about the coach on an anonymous internet forum, does not make all fans “the worst”. We are Ranger fans. We are very passionate about our team. Excuse some of us for making comments in the heat of emotions during another loss in a losing streak. We just got used to this team banging, hitting, fighting, clawing, scratching a win out. What goes down will come up. What is negative will become positive. What is off will come back on. The Rangers have been losing, they will win. So it has been written.
LETS GO RANGERS! See you all at 3.

I agree with you to a point, but when a lot of people are changing their mood just because of the losing streak its typical New York. Instead of calling for Tort’s head we should be hoping he gets this team to turn it around. And heck who knows this could be good for us just like Boudreau(Spelling?) said about his capitals team during their long losing streak. changing tune on a game to game basis is just ridiculous.

Everyone - the point is moot

Whether it was a slash, wasn’t a slash, was a penalty, wasn’t a penalty, involved Avery, didn’t involve Avery, Cooke, Crosby, Bettman, Obama, whomever…the bottom line is: Six year olds are taught the moment they get on the ice in game competition not to worry about the calls, the refs, the crowd, the other parents, the other team’s yappers, etc., etc. …Just play the game – the GAME! Now, if a six year old can manage to do this?…
